  • First Day of Tiger Chinese New Year

First Day of Tiger Chinese New Year

This year’s Chinese New Year fell on the date same as the Valentine’s Day. Still remember last year that I went to Chin Ping’s place to BBQ and celebrate the day together, this year is different already, I am single, no Valentine, and the whole day was with my brother, my mother, my father and everyone at home. Also it’s also the day people came to visit and received a lot of ang bao. Very fun.

    IMG_3872 by nicholaschan.
Looking at the Star Map on my phone early in the morning. So bright, where got star?

I then only realized that I took not many photos on that day, perhaps that I was busy collecting money in ang bao (red packet) and eating Chinese New Year’s tidbits. Yummy.

    IMG_3876 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_3878 by nicholaschan.

This year was a little bit different, brother and I woke up pretty late in the morning, it’s almost noon. Freshen up, wishes my dear daddy and mommy and I received ang bao from them. Then same like every year, we will go to grandma place for brunch and gong hei fatt choi to everyone. What’s different was that we stopped there, didn’t go visit relative’s place already where the Chinese calls this kind of visit during CNY as bai nian.

    IMG_3883 by nicholaschan.

Instead, relatives came over to grandma place and they talked and gave me ang bao. ^^

    IMG_3885 by nicholaschan.

For me, there’s nothing much to do except saying GONG HEI FATT CHOI, eating and drinking.

IMG_3888 by nicholaschan. IMG_3889 by nicholaschan.

Stayed there till late afternoon then we went back home to sleep. And at night, no idea where to eat and we ordered pizza and grandma and cousins of mommy’s side came over to my place to eat PIZZA. =D So weird. No cinema for us because it’s damn fully booked and sold out. OMG.

  • More About My Previous Part-Time for DiGi at Queensbay Mall

More About My Previous Part-Time for DiGi at Queensbay Mall

I am going to talk about my recent part-time job at Queensbay Mall few weeks back again. I know working part-time is very normal and common thing, but I am a little bit crazy, took photos and like talking very big about my job. Actually it’s just for a little memories of mine, at least I did go to work during this long 3-4 months holidays. There will be a part-time for me again this weekend, not at Queensbay Mall but at Gurney Plaza.

    IMG_5273 by nicholaschan.

My job was promoter and assistant event organizer, I was not dealer, people can’t sign line through me, I only promote and bring them to the dealer. So basically my job was standing and giving out flyers and taking care of the customer service counter. Very interesting thing is that Maxis, the rival’s booth was not far away.

On these 3 days of work, I met many friends, and also made new friends at work. To be honest, time passes very slow but yet, it’s already passed. =) Money money come.

    IMG_5282 by nicholaschan.

Lunch break and dinner break was always the 3 same place, Ultimaxx Cafe, Chopper Board and Breeks Cafe. RM4-7 per meal. There’s a rule that I can’t go for break in pairs, but luckily for the 3 days, I found friends at the mall to eat together with.

Working there burns calories because I stand a lot, standing, standing and keep standing, for more than 9 hours. Morning till night. Not that bad afterall, at night still got Chinese oldies played from speaker of central zone as part of Chinese New Year celebration.

    IMG_5346 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_5345 by nicholaschan.

And for the 3 nights while we were going home, we always stuck in the jam for like 5-10 minutes. It’s the car of all who works at Queensbay Mall, not shoppers. Wow.

One tip for working at Queensbay Mall, parking at the open site car park is only RM1.50 as per entry.

  • Tiger Chinese New Year’s Eve

    Tiger Chinese New Year’s Eve

I am back everyone. This is really shit, had been hiatus, had been on holiday for so long and I suddenly feel uncomfortable with typing and writing blog. But I guess I must stop myself being a lazy butt slacking everyday during this of my very own Chinese New Year holiday. Although I am already in holiday right now and before CNY, but CNY’s holiday is more lazy than before.
    IMG_3758 by nicholaschan.

No idea where to start writing and sharing, so gonna share my Chinese New Year’s Eve which is also the reunion day with family of all Chinese in the world.

    IMG_3760 by nicholaschan.

Most people have their reunion DINNER, as for me, I have it for both LUNCH and DINNER. Shops as usual were open on that day until 6pm only because it’s still not an official holiday. Though on this year, the eve fell on a Saturday, so it’s nice for the schooling. Yay, I am not schooling at the moment.

    IMG_3761 by nicholaschan.

People like steamboat, because it’s everyone-sit-down-together and share saliva and it’s reunion. Haha, few years back we still had steamboat but now we don’t. Grandma said it’s troublesome, a lot to prepare and IMO, I don’t really like steamboat a lot. Now people either just go to the restaurant, buffet, or just cook some nice dishes and eat-together.

    IMG_3768 by nicholaschan.
Watching Opening Ceremony of Winter Olympics Vancouver 2010 and lunch at the same time.

Unfortunately, it’s not everyone on the table. Some were stuck on the jam, some were far away in Australia studying and so, it’s not fully reunited. It’s still good to have many people in the house. For lunch, I go to family of daddy’s side at night would be family of mommy’s side.

    IMG_3769 by nicholaschan.
    Brother Yikhung.

Many food and very full. There’s abalone too! Don’t know why during New Year, people cooks abalone. Didn’t stay long at grandma’s place because nothing much to do there. We went elsewhere.

Stay at home also boring, so brother, cousin Wai Leong and I went to Gurney Plaza to walk around and eat ice cream! Ice cream on a hot day was nice. Something’s wrong with the weather, from the eve till now, it’s so hot everyday outside.

    IMG_3778 by nicholaschan.

There’s still many people in the mall despite it’s an eve, you will be thinking everyone went for reunion meal but not. I believe it’s their last minute shopping! =D I bought a t-shirt on that day too. And everything will be new on the next day, the New Year day.

    IMG_3779 by nicholaschan.
    Wai Leong.

    IMG_3780 by nicholaschan.

Still, we were not going home. We went to town for another dessert again, Famous Penang Road Chendul.

    IMG_3784 by nicholaschan.

It’s just so refreshing and chilling. Although I got a little flu that time, still, this really chill me off. One question, is it that when people is having a flu, he/she can’t take in cold things?

Night time came, and it’s reunion dinner of mommy side’s family! It had been many years that grandma didn’t cook for reunion dinner, have forgotten for how many years already. Every year, we would just book a restaurant which opens on the eve, then eat there. Uncles and aunties all came back from Johor and Sungai Petani, so nice that Penang is the meet-up point and I am there, no traveling far. =D

It’s a few-courses dinner. Forgotten how many course, OOPS, because that the dinner wasn’t that nice. Just simply stuck the food in, I only liked that roasted piglet the most. Meat, I like!

    IMG_3852 by nicholaschan.

I have think before that New Year mu
st go to the cinema but somehow I didn’t go before, now only I know that movie tickets were all purchased few days before CNY and the cinema is very full during CNY! No chance to watch movie for latecomer like me.

    IMG_3859 by nicholaschan.

We didn’t want to go home so early, so went to the jazz bar at G Hotel which have an awkward name, G SPOT. There’s live Jazz music playing all night long.

    IMG_3864 by nicholaschan.

Played with the lights, listened to the Jazz, drank some cocktail, and finally everyone went home. It’s Valentine’s Day the next day man, and also Chinese New Year, but heck I don’t have a Valentine, so chocolate was off and red packet was ON, and still ON! Come give me red packet, it gives you prosper. Hehe.

Gong Hei Fatt Choi. Live Long and Prosper. XD

    IMG_3669 by nicholaschan

Last time I introduced before the Fried Rice at Lebuh Presgrave or more known as Sa Tiao Lor 三条路 to the locals. Last night, I went there for supper and I ordered the Char Koay Teow from the same stall that does the nice fried rice.

The char koay teow quite delicious which I likey it. Just a bit sad that there’s only 2 not very big shrimp and a little bit spicy. If the shrimp gets bigger like at Lorong Selamat, and juicy, then it will be very very good.

  • Throw Coconut on Thaipusam Day at Datuk Keramat

Throw Coconut on Thaipusam Day at Datuk Keramat

Oh hello, I am back again and now I am going to talk about the Indian’s big Thaipusam Day that happened two weeks ago. I am so lucky to be in one of the states that has big celebration for this big Indian/Tamil/Hindu festival. As far as I know, Penang and Kuala Lumpur are the two places here in Malaysia that have it big.

    IMG_4747 by nicholaschan.

Last year, some friends did invite me to go to the festival to do some photoshooting, but because I couldn’t wake up so early in the morning, so I missed it. This year was different, I didn’t plan to go photo shooting too, but it’s just that on the day before, Thaipusam’s Eve, the procession has already started and I was going no where after the Chung Ling Memorial thing, so Chien Chern, my friend decided to go visit a friend at Datuk Keramat Road whose his dad’s shop is just right in front of the Thaipusam thing.

    IMG_4742 by nicholaschan.

So what they had that afternoon was the coconut throwing and some procession take place and people pays respect to the Indian god by contributing prayers thing like fruits, candles.

Till now, I still remembered it’s a very hot day, the sun was hanging high in the sky, shinning down, with the heat radiating the ground. I didn’t care because I wanted to shoot the festival and share it up.

    IMG_4753 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_4755 by nicholaschan.

The coconuts were bought by people mostly have their business along the road, they throw the coconut on the ground, break it, is to clean the road for procession, as a respect to god, a prayer, for wealth and health. It’s said to be good luck to throw the coconut. I did try before long time ago when I was small, when my dad had a furniture shop at Datuk Keramat Road, it’s now moved to Gottlieb Road though.

    IMG_4761 by nicholaschan.
    Arron and his family.

At the time 2.30pm sharp, “piak piak piak” sound can be heard and coconuts were everywhere on the ground with the juice splashing out. The scene was epic. Try not to stand near to them because the coconut can be rebounded. Hehe, just like a basketball.

    IMG_4763 by nicholaschan.

Part of the road was block for this thing and people who bought coconut were at the middle of the road while me and other people like me who see for fun and takes photo were on the other side, hoping that did not get hit by the coconut.

    IMG_4768 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_4774 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_4784 by nicholaschan.

These coconuts although are hard, but it’s actually kinda easy to be squashed. At some time, some un-squashed will roll to my place and I will pick it up and join the fun too!

    IMG_4821 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_4818 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_4841 by nicholaschan.

The MPPP people were very efficient, when everything stopped, they quickly come and swept the coconut to a side and let the real procession began and don’t want to stuck the road.

    IMG_4845 by nicholaschan.

They walk with their bare feet and I believed the road is not hot already because it had been juiced.

  • Chung Ling High School 2009 Graduation Ceremony

Chung Ling High School 2009 Graduation Ceremony

So on last time, I showed you guys many photos of me and my friends taken before the Graduation Ceremony which happened like 3 months ago in 2009. I was just too busy with my stuff and had forgotten to share it up with you guys.

    IMG_4119 by nicholaschan.

In this post, I’m gonna talk about what happened in the hall during the Graduation Day of 2009 of Chung Ling High School. We got into the school hall at about 9am, it’s an hour before the official ceremony started while we had one hour free time, sitting down, talking and doing nothing. It’s pretty bored waiting for it to get started and also the arrival of VIPs.

    IMG_4125 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_4134 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_4137 by nicholaschan.

It’s teachers and us who waited together for everything to get started. Before the day, many people told me that it will be bored and this and that. I also thought so.

    IMG_4142 by nicholaschan.

There’s no show or any form of entertainment during the ceremony, it’s speeches by VIPs and principals all the time. Our Graduation Ceremony is a combination of Form 5s and Upper Sixth Form of my Chung Ling High School and Year 6 of Chung Ling (Private) High School. One thing was that we were suppose to have the ceremony a week before, but changed last minute because Chung Ling Butterworth High School had their ceremony on that day.

Not fun because I wanted this to come fast and go fast so I can stop schooling and get more time for SPM study. Anyhow, I don’t care now, it’s so so so much over.

    IMG_4149 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_4154 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_4159 by nicholaschan.

There’s also recognition, awards and prize giving to student who has got an outstanding performance in various fields and subject and studies. It’s so nice to see they go up to the stage to receive the award, with the company of their parents. So proud. If I knew about this when I was Form 1, I would already had fight for it. Haha. I suck.

    IMG_4164 by nicholaschan.
    Wishes from teachers. Sweet!

Many speeches and a lot of cheer and shouts for the friends who went up the stage for recognition and awards receiving. It wasn’t that boring after all, interest to know about the school report and it’s “Wow, my school is so good one.”

After the official ceremony, VIPs got out of the hall, the Year 6 student of Chung Ling Private High School went back to their school and it left us again, the all-boys Form 5 and the mix of Sixth Forms student.

    IMG_4168 by nicholaschan.

A little self-high show were held. There’s rock band, singing Linkin Park’s What I’ve Done.

    IMG_4185 by nicholaschan.

There’s Ballet Dancing and there’s very fierce (kidding)  Mr Lye, a school teacher went on stage to sing a song. Everyone was like “AHHHHHHH”, so high. Screaming here and there because he’s Mr Lye. It’s also my first time seeing boy do ballet dancing, and he was from my class! Shi Hun is his name. Wow, surprised.

    IMG_4219 by nicholaschan.

He is Mr Lye, very good.

    IMG_4229 by nicholaschan.

After that, off the hall, and finished! But before going home, I went to VIP’s toilet to take photo. XD There’s a toilet in school which is specially made for VIP, look cool, but no AC inside. After that, I still went to take many many photos with teachers and some friends, stay tune. I’ll stop here. =D

  • Working for Digi in Queensbay Mall for 3 Days

Working for Digi in Queensbay Mall for 3 Days

So basically, if you need to look for mobile broadband, cheapest postpaid, or any Digi-related product, do drop by at the Digi’s booth in Queensbay Mall Central Zone behind the performing stage, I will be there from Friday till this Sunday. =D

    IMG_5266 by nicholaschan.

I am working part-time as promoter, event helper and almost everything. HAHA. Fun or not? There’s fun, because there’s payout, there’s not fun because I stand a lot and it’s like many many hours and walkaround the booth quite a lot.

I receive the job quite last minute, I was surfing the net at home, fixing my computer then suddenly a friend called and ask if I need a job or not, so I said “yes” and asked “when?”. She said “now” and I was like OMG a little bit, so fast, but since I’ve got nothing to do and there’s payout, I took the job.

So basically we are targeting customer on mobile broadband, so any inquiry can drop by, or if there’s nothing, also can drop by and chill with me.

    IMG_5265 by nicholaschan.

So nice that today (Friday), I bumped up with many friends, some work at Queensbay and some were just shopping around, at least it’s not boring.

    IMG_5267 by nicholaschan.

My colleagues are all very friendly too and very nice to talk. Like it.

    IMG_5263 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_5264 by nicholaschan.

Another thing to mention is that try sending “VIP” to 2000 to check whether you are a Digi Priority user, if you are, you can redeem free gift from the booth. Only for postpaid and super heavy user. =) I am a prepaid so I am not entitle for it.

    IMG_5269 by nicholaschan

    IMG_5271 by nicholaschan

So, the working hour is 10.30am to 10.30pm, a lot of stand, so do come by and check out Digi. In my own opinion, Digi has got the cheapest Blackberry plan, cheapest unlimited data plan, fastest mobile 3G broadband, nice postpaid plan and good service. I am telling the truth, not just trying to promote Digi, I kinda like how they market their product.

The reason I am on Maxis Mobile Internet because I am using a Maxis business line so if asking me to port to Digi, there will be a lot of procedure and my mom will not want to spend extra time on doing this. So I’ve got no choice.

  • Hiking to Moon Gate with Friends

Hiking to Moon Gate with Friends

The initial plan was Chien Chern come to my house to fetch me go to Penang Hill Tram Station to fetch Arron, Chen Yuen, Yiphing and Sher Reen to Botanical Garden, then hike up to Penang Hill and eat some ice kacang, then take the tram down and sit Arron’s car back to Botanical Garden for Chien Chern’s car. But FAILED because the tram service was down for repair work. So sad man.

    IMG_4612 by nicholaschan.

While at the tram station, while waiting for Arron them to come, Chien Chern and I got no place to go and simply drove around the area and found a temple. So we went in to take a look and I prayed.

    IMG_4615 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_4614 by nicholaschan.

The temple was pretty cool and it’s quiet in the morning. I saw monks at there.

    IMG_4617 by nicholaschan.

In the end, all two car drove to Youth Park and hike up to Moon Gate and come back down. It’s still exercise afterall but we were quite late at that time, it’s almost mid-morning already.

    IMG_4624 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_4633 by nicholaschan.

Moon Gate is a stop at the hill for resting. The trail up to the place where I always go hiking with my mom. It’s pretty fun and sometime can see monkey at there.

    IMG_4635 by nicholaschan.

I did check how long the trail was before, it’s about 2km and it’s not very tall, around 230m above sea level and took us like half and hour. Wonder how long will it takes for us to climb the Mount. Kinabalu tallest in South East Asia.

    IMG_4640 by nicholaschan.
    Sher Reen, Yiphing.

I have got no food up there and at that kind of time, there’s no water service too, so I drank tap water up there, hopefully it’s clean. =) Feeling a little bit of hungry, Arron gave me a bite of his prepared sandwich. Thank you.

    IMG_4644 by nicholaschan.
    Chien Chern.

Spent like 30 minutes up there, crapping and shouting after other people went down, so at a moment, it’s only us up there. Very not quiet but a bit creepy. But soon, there’s hiker came up again and we turned our voice down. If you go hiking during the evening, there’s nice kopi-o to drink, music and many people up there, quite happenings.

We wanted to go Penang Hill still, but no luck connecting it to there. There’s still a route at the back of Moon Gate, but no sure where it leads to. A little bit scary. Haha.

Nice view from some part of the hill.

    IMG_4684 by nicholaschan.

We then went down under the hot sun. Very surprise and now only I know there’s still people go hiking almost noon. It’s like peopl
e go there at anytime of the day, don’t know night got or not.

  • My 2010 New Year Eve in Penang

My 2010 New Year Eve in Penang

Some friend must be thinking, “isn’t my new year’s eves are always in Penang (my hometown)?” Pretty wrong, last year I spent my New Year’s Eve at a cold and people-not-enjoying-new-years-eve place and that’s Guangzhou.

People at there don’t really interest in New Year or New Year eve, Chinese there are more to Chinese New Year, but so New Year Day is still a national public holiday. Still remember that I spent my day touring Guangzhou and at night counting down in the hotel room, watching Hong Kong’s great fireworks from the idiot box. It’s still fun though, because I was traveling. =D

    IMG_2892 by nicholaschan.

    IMG_2894 by nicholaschan.

Same thing as Christmas Eve’s morning, I woke up then went for dim sum at the same dim sum house. I don’t know whose idea it was, it’s just “IT’S DIM SUM AGAIN!”.

    IMG_2896 by nicholaschan.

They as in Yiphing, Chai Wei, Chien Chern and Chen Yuen went back to their places and would be meet in the afternoon. As for me, I went for college hunting to ask info about studies. Went to The One, Disted and Equator and still I’ve got no decision in my mind. I am going to wait for my result in March already. I think I’ll go to a college whichever needed to pay the less.

    IMG_2903 by nicholaschan.

Then went to meet Anthony, my tuition teacher at his new place, big renovation was going on because he wanted to remove all the wall in his new house. Seems interesting and just stayed there for a while and listen to his ideas on the interior design.

After college hunting, I actually got no place to go. I was supposed to go meet my friends at her house and I was in the middle of her house and my house, thinking should I go home for a rest or not. After thinking for a little bit, decided to spend the whole day out and only go back home at midnight. Save petrol by not going back and out. Hehe.

Very lame, we were suppose to think what to do and where to go at Yiphing’s house but in the end, we spent the whole afternoon at her house, crapping mostly and eat instant noodle. Thank you Yiphing for the instant noodle. At one time, I don’t know what we were screaming and shouting until the neighbour came complain, it means seriously that the place need better noise insulation. =D

    Shit, act gay.

6pm came and in one car, I was the driver, we went to Queensbay Mall to check out the countdown concert. Unfortunately, there’s no Yiphing here, it’s only me, Chien Chern, Chen Yuen and Chai Wei. Mom keep telling me that it would be very jam around the area but what I saw was smooth traffic, just like the Chinese always says One Road Smooth Wind, which means move smoothly all the way.

The concert was starting at 8 and it was like 6.30pm when we arrived. It seems like there’s no crazy fans waiting at the front line, since there’s nothing to see yet, we went into Queensbay Mall and roam around, without sense of direction and shops to go or things to buy.

My favourite thing to do is standing in front of any of the Mac, iMac biggest screen 27″ preferably, turn on Photo Booth program and make fun, then bluetooth all the photo for self-storage. =D Very lame right? It’s a form of my entertainment when I found Apple’s computer at the store. We spent like half an hour at there and took quite many photos. Hopefully no one were laughing at us and the Apple people didn’t even want to bother us.

Accidentally bumped up with Mxdoing Min Xiang and his friend Sammy, they were going for a movie instead.

Very sad that after playing so long at the Photo Booth and walking the whole mall, the concert still not yet started. The MC were just interacting with the people. I don’t have the Rock’s Zone ticket, so I didn’t bother to go in early.

Very lame, we went into the mall again. I went to get my camera batteries because I was scared that my camera will run die if I keep on shooting useless stuff.

It’s dinner time after that. Almost all restaurant in Queensbay Mall are not very low priced, so we went out of Queensbay Mall and found Mommy Wang at the opposite. Not very low priced too, but do serves not-bad Taiwanese food.

After dinner for sure would be the concert time! Since we have got no ticket, we stand pretty far from the stage and only can see from the screen. I didn’t have a zoom lens, so not thinking of photo shooting that time. Just enjoying the crowds and music.

It’s a Chinese concert, organized by local Chinese commercial radio 988, there’s 2 Taiwanese singer (Tank and Power Station) and many local artists and what I was waiting for was the Taiwanese singer only. =D They came out at the very end of the concert for countdown of new year.

    Met Alvin there.

Then P1 Wimax were giving out a lot of air banger but it’s lousy, it goes airless after a few bangs.

    IMG_3145 by nicholaschan.

    Cheong Kin were there too!

After Tank came out on stage and sang many many song, I really meant many, maybe he is popular so the whole half and hour was given to him, then we went somewhere near backstage to wait for the fireworks. Power Station took the stage on after that, and they were counting down for it. Found no where to sit, it’s everyone, and since the road was block, we sat on the floor. ^^

    5-4-3-2-1. Yoyoyo, happy new year!

Didn’t have a tripod with me so I can’t shoot nice fireworks photo. I took them handheld at a slow speed. The fireworks was not very awesome, it’s like 10 minutes long only.

The night had not end yet, the most shitty thing was queuing up to pay parking ticket, the line was half and hour long and after paying, the whole carpark was a massive jam, takes another half and hour to get out. Scary. I was thinking that won’t I have to repay my parking ticket because I exceeded the time limit after paying the parking ticket and not out of the mall, but it’s not a problem already because there’s guard collecting ticket and need not insert into the barrier machine again.

It’s only jam at Queensbay Mall carpark, the road outside was smooth. The night then ended with a supper at Upper Penang Road. Then it’s home everyone. Happy Chinese New Year for now! Haha.
