Magazine 63, Speakeasy Hidden Bar In Penang

Even though this speakeasy is known as Magazine 63, most people still tends to refer it as the ‘Hidden Bar’ in Penang as it’s one of few speakeasy bar in Penang. Speakeasy is more of a correct way to refer to the ‘hidden’ bar, which normally no proper signage of the bar establishment, commonly has an unnoticed entrance.

There’s actually two speakeasy in Penang, well one is this, and another one, will be sharing with you all on my next visit. Looking dead and nothing from the outside, one could easily missed the entrance but recently they have just put up a banner – 小龙女家具中心 which translate into Xiao Long Nv Furniture Shop, it’s easier to spot on. Another way to recognise it is to look for Da Ma Cai lottery shop which is just beside it.

Furniture Centre as written on the banner as to further hide the establishment.

Entering the scissors grille door, there’s another hidden entrance.

Still, there’s another hidden entrance upon passing the scissors gate, but it’s not hard to look for the real door. Gonna keep things secretive here for your own exploration. Entering the bar brings you into a new dimension, as if you are entering into a old Chinese bar. DJ is playing on a cool upper window deck, overlooking the lower floor with trance, the inside was crowded on a Saturday night, real crowded.

天下第一客栈 (Tian Xia Di Yi Ke Zhan) is the other name of Magazine 63, the Chinese signage is proudly display on the raw wood wall, blending well with a brick setup. You cannot recognize that you are actually in a colonial shophouse from their setup.

The bar tender introduced their in-house special cocktail in a Chinese wine bottle – Nv Er Hong which is decently sweet, but not to my tastebuds liking. Though, the Chinese wine bottle do brings a lot of attention and the girls like it a lot, as in the sweetness in it and also for Instagram.

The people with me that night. Lovely night with economist, hotel owner, F&B distributor.

Ambiance is real cool, alcohol price is on a higher side, as I believe they target the working class which I find it great for Penang. It is highly advisable to reserve a table if you are coming on a weekend for a good night out.

  • Vienna: The Famous Cafe Central Which Was Once Visited By Vladimir Lenin, Adolf Hitler More!

Vienna: The Famous Cafe Central Which Was Once Visited By Vladimir Lenin, Adolf Hitler More!

Vienna: The Famous Cafe Central – I’ve read somewhere that Vienna is famous for the cafe culture. You can find coffee houses nearly everywhere in Vienna and though Starbucks has moved in a bit, there are not on every corner as they often are in other parts of the world. Many of the cafe in Vienna have substantial food menus and bakeries or specialised desserts to showcase their uniqueness. One of the most popular cafe in Vienna is Cafe Central, which is just two blocks from St. Michael’s Square at Hofburg Palace near the Inner Staadt.

Opened in 1876, it has quite a history back then where it had been visited by intellectuals like Vladimir Lenin, Adolf Hitler and more! Because of this reason, we visited this cafe for an afternoon break in the city after a long tiring walk as well as to see if we could get some inspiration like how the famous did back then.

After checking out the world most beautiful cafe and an interesting bookstore cafe in Budapest, the interior of Cafe Central did not really captured my attention. Chandeliers, arched ceilings and marble columns were failed to be on par with the one I’ve visited, yet Cafe Central still has its own personality. Somehow, service, coffee and the slice of Sacher Torte still were not up to the expectation. Is it that we had something too good back in Budapest, or is it that it was too crowded at there and the staff could not service every patron well, or is it just because we just got conned by the classical music seller by the street?

Not saying that you should not visit this place, you should as it’s one of the famous one and perhaps you might experience a different sensation here.

Poet, Peter Altenburg who was a regular and famous Viennese coffee house write. Still, I’ve no idea who he was.

Sachertorte, a specific type of chocolate cake inved by Austrian Franz Sacher in 1832 for Prince Wenzel von Metternich. To be simple, it’s a chocolate sponge cake with apricot jam and dark chocolate icing. Taste surprisingly quite nice, but not as good as the chocolate cake with true Belgium chocolate filling that I’ve had at the Book Cafe in Budapest. Nevertheless, this is a good one, but this is not the original Sachertorte. You can try the original Sachertorte at Cafe Sacher in Hotel Sacher.  One funny thing is, December 5th in Austria is named the National Sachertorte Day.

  • Bangkok: Must-Eat Swensens Ice Cream

    Bangkok: Must-Eat Swensens Ice Cream

Bangkok: Must-Eat Swensens Ice Cream – You know right, one of the must-eat thing in Bangkok or anywhere in Thailand is Swensen’s Ice Cream. Why? It’s because it’s dirty cheap, no I should say low-priced! Yeah, the desserts are so much cheaper than the Swensen’s in Malaysia and Singapore. Ice cream desserts in Thai’s Swensen’s starts from 69Baht (about RM7), and in Malaysia it’s from RM15, there’s so much difference!
After some research, I found out that Swensen’s actually specialize in ice cream desserts and founded in San Francisco, California. Somehow, the Swensen’s in Malaysia and Singapore serves food, which seems more to be a Western cuisine restaurant than ice cream restaurant.
So in Thai, the Swensen’s only serves ice cream, and you must just try it out!
  • Klang Valley: Signature Cake @ Thirty 8, Grand Hyatt Hotel

Klang Valley: Signature Cake @ Thirty 8, Grand Hyatt Hotel

Klang Valley: Signature Cake @ Thirty 8, Grand Hyatt Hotel – KL has so many nice food place to explore! I am starting to miss the time exploring those beautiful cafe & restaurant in KL already. Although they are rather pricey, yet, I try to spend it budget-ly and experience the ambience and food fully.
So Thirty8 @ Grand Hyatt Hotel, located just right beside of Kuala Lumpur Convention, the name seems to be very ‘atas’ high-end and it’s not overly high-end as I expected. Haha. It get a bit confusing at first because I was not welcomed by the hotel lobby once I stepped into Grand Hyatt, instead I have to take the elevator to go to 38th floor, where the real Grand Hyatt Hotel’s lobby is, pretty interesting.
At just a level down the lobby, 37th, it’s where Thirty8 is, the hotel’s lounge. Having a 360 degree view of Kuala Lumpur, the view from here is just magnificent, and you will just in love with it. Pick a good spot, facing the Petronas Twin Towers preferably and enjoy your moment there.
It was an afternoon for my and Clarice. I think it would be even better at night, but afternoon gets to photograph easily with plenty of natural lighting, but then night view would be stunning too.
So, our main purpose was just to try their Thirty8 Signature Cake @ RM25 which literally is chocolate cake, but it’s more like mousse cake which is very soft. The special part of it is the presence of dry ice that create the smoking vapor effect which ‘WOW’ people. Topped with caramel and side with a banana ice cream, this dessert is very sweet! Yes, I mentioned very sweet. So beware if you are not into super-sweet dessert.
Next time, if there’s a chance again, I would like to try their ‘Straight From The Oven Chocolate Cake, Raspberry Sorbet, Vanilla Anglaise’, which is a highly recommended cake too!

  • Klang Valley: Paddington Garden, Sunway Giza

Klang Valley: Paddington Garden, Sunway Giza

Klang Valley: Paddington Garden, Sunway Giza – Paddington Garden is pancake specialized cafe located at Sunway Giza and serving the same menu that they had in Taiwan (yes, it’s from Taiwan). I went to for an afternoon tea to try out their pancake few weeks back, I thought I almost had found a similar nice pancake like the one I had at Hoshino Coffee in Singapore, but then it’s the pancake at Paddington Garden is just the other way around.
I am not a pancake-pro, but I like it to be sweet and something like what I had at Hoshino Cafe. I didn’t now what to order, and randomly ordered a Tiramisu Pancake. Turned out, it’s not what I wanted and it tasted somewhat, bitter with the espresso topping! HAHAHA. Well, I need sweet pancake, any recommendation?

  • Klang Valley: Awesome Tiramisu @ Alexis, Bangsar Shopping Centre

Klang Valley: Awesome Tiramisu @ Alexis, Bangsar Shopping Centre

Klang Valley: Awesome Tiramisu @ Alexis, Bangsar Shopping Centre – I am starting to miss this tiramisu from Alexis. The world is so big that there’s so many better food out there! Before this, I always thought of China House at Penang has the best tiramisu cake, but actually not, Alexis has even better one!
I actually get to know about it by a friend that she claimed that Alexis has a better one. This sparked my curiousity and no doubt, it is. Talking about Alexis, they serve various western cuisine, as well as fusion food too, but my visit was just for the sake of tiramisu. They have a few outlets, one at The Gardens, Mid Valley, another one is outside of Bangsar Village Mall, one is at Bangsar Shopping Centre (the one I went) and another one at Ampang.
It’s kind of ‘atas’ to me with a nicely decorated minimalist interior and if you come at certain nights, they have relaxing jazz music accompany your meal. Pretty cool! Too bad I am already back to Penang, don’t get much chance to visit again. Hmmm!
RM15 per piece. What’s good about the cake that it’s the sweetness is just nice and the cake is overloaded with caramel peacan which resulted the sweetness and the crunchyness of it. Cake itself is not too soft but the thing lack of is the alcohol taste. Some might not like the sweetness of it, but not me and comparing with China House, I’ll take this. Yay.
    Dear Clarice with the cake!

  • Penang: Lighthouse Coffee, Bishop Street

    Penang: Lighthouse Coffee, Bishop Street

Penang: Lighthouse Coffee – Drinking a cup of aromatic coffee in the core of UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town, Penang, together with a small slice of cake just bring the relaxing experience to a greater level. Coffee shops are popping up here and there in this little city of George Town. The recent one that I have visited was Lighthouse Coffee, located in Logan Heritage by Bishop Street, it’s just off the famous Beach Street which is filled with colonial-styles building.
It is a very small cafe which serve coffee of course, a great variety of coffee and desserts cake. I am not a coffee addict, it’s just something to drink for relaxing and to freshen up the mind. So, I went to check around Foursquare and has got some recommendation which is the Mochaccino and tiramisu.
Well then, Mochaccino and a small slice of Tiramisu was accompanying me and Clarice in the hot sunny afternoon. The Mochaccino was good, the aroma of coffee beans and a little bit taste of chocolate did indeed brings pleasant stream through my taste buds and down my throat.
Tiramisu on the other hand blends well between the alcohol and the sweetness. Somehow, the texture was not spongy enough and I still prefer the one at China House. However, this is up to the level too for a good tiramisu. It’s just that it has a very small portion.
So, if you are craving for a coffee and a good quiet place for your afternoon, do check out Lighthouse Coffee.

  • Penang: Mugshot Cafe, Chulia Street

    Penang: Mugshot Cafe, Chulia Street

Penang: Mugshot Cafe, Chulia Street – Haven’t been home for quite some times and just realised that there’s so many new cafes pop up around town! Mugshot Cafe is a new one (might not new to Penangite but me) at Chulia Street, right opposite the famous Wan Tan Mee or just next to the Rainforest Bakery.

I’m wondering how to describe this kind of cafe. It’s retro-ish, a bit of artsy fartsy and a little bit similar to Burps & Giggles of Ipoh. Heritage artsy style? There’s so many in town right now. I went on a Sunday afternoon and it’s kinda hard to get a seat there. The seating is kinda cute with low table and chair like in the kindergarten.

There’s not much in the menu, you can find coffee and tea, some cakes, homemade yogurt, and bagel muffin. That’s it. Bagels were sold out and it’s only cake and yogurt for me. The carrot cake was good, sweet enough for my sweet tooth and the apple crumble was nice too according to my mom, but then I think I am not an apple crumble person, I don’t like the sourish apple in it. HAHA. Another thing I ordered was the Walnuts & Raisins Yogurt which I find it too sourish too, should have tried Jackfruit & Gula Melaka!
Raisin & Walnut Yogurt. Too sour for me.
    Carrot Cake.
    Apple Crumble Pie.
After all, this seems to be a good place for an afternoon tea and to chill. Will be back to try their bagel muffin.

  • Klang Valley: Nadeje Crepe Cake At PJ Three Two Square

Klang Valley: Nadeje Crepe Cake At PJ Three Two Square

Klang Valley: Nadeje Crepe Cake At PJ Three Two Square – That Saturday didn’t just stop like this at the Bak Kut Teh and also cycling in the morning, there’s still one late afternoon desserts chilling time and that’s to the newly open Nadeje Crepe Cake located at PJ’s Three Two Square.

Those who have been to Malacca must have know about the famous Nadeje Cafe which sells crepe cake. I wasn’t that excited because it has become something that’s not Malacca’s specialties anymore as you can find it in Klang Valley! Nevertheless, I still brought a happy and tired to visit the place and spend a small afternoon with crepes.

A little bit disappointing when I see the cafe is not as beautiful as the one in Malacca. There’s so less seats and we waited for like 15 minutes to get a seat. I believe the open up this cafe in PJ is to cater for take-away instead of create a nice atmosphere for people to enjoy like in Malacca. There’s only a few seats out on the corridor and inside. So, it’s not my next hangout place. Haha.

I like Pearl Of The Orient. Do you notice that Earl Grey taste like your soap?
Henry, Siyi, Weishi, Jason, Ling Jia, Quenna, me, Wei Kean and Mei Jia.

Cake was not bad, crepe all taste the same to me. Haha, somehow I still like the Hokkaido Chocolate @ Twelve Cups, Penang. Yummeh! What do you think about Nadeje?

  • Muar: Thirst Quenching Pear Juice @ Jalan Yahya

Muar: Thirst Quenching Pear Juice @ Jalan Yahya

Muar: Thirst Quenching Pear Juice @ Jalan Yahya – I bet many of you haven’t heard of Pear Juice before. I knew about pear – the fruit, but then juicing it into a beverage, I’ve never heard it before nor try it. In Muar, there’s one stall that sells pear juice, located on Jalan Yahya right in front of a fruit stall. It’s recommended by one of my Muar friend that it’s a must-try in Muar.

So I followed my GPS and went to look for it but FAILED to locate it for the first time, I didn’t want to give up and went to find again, and found it right front of a fruit stall. It’s a very very small stall, that why I missed it at first. At only RM1 per pack for take-away, it’s enough to quench the thirst of me and Clarice after exploring food at Tam Jiak Kheh for whole afternoon under the hot sun. Check it out!
