Budapest: Very Interesting ‘Ruin’ Bar & Club

Eastern Europe Trip // Budapest: Very Interesting ‘Ruin’ Bar & Club – I never know about these ‘ruin bars’ to me before I came to Budapest. When I was in the hostel that I stayed (BlackSheep), there was like a board showing the attractions and where to hang out at night, there where I found a huge list of ‘ruin bars’. Sounds interesting in the name, as it like bar in a broken down setup, and turned up it actually is like that.

‘Ruin bars’, or ‘Ruin clubs’ are built in Budapest’s old District VII neighbourhood in the ruins of abandoned buildings, that where the name come from. Bars and clubs in run down and abandoned buildings where it’s modified, revamped, restored a little bit with some touch of artsy fartsy decoration and bar facilities and that’s the ‘ruin bars’.

From outside, they looks like any other building around, without large signs pointing the way and you don’t hear any loud noise nor many people quieing to get in. But once you walk in and enter the inner courtyard, you find yourself in the middle of hip, artsy, funky bar that is bustling with crowds talking, music pumping from the dance room and merrily enjoying the laid-back atmosphere

Of course, it’s for 18 and above and most of the bars are free, but clubs though charge a little fee for entrance. There’s once that I went was free – Instant, but be prepared for a long queue into it. The coolest part was there’s various room for different genre of music. The hipsy decoration, the open air bar and different type of rooms and setup just gave a variety of sensation to be experienced. You would not know how cool it is from the outside, but once you are inside, you would be like, ‘WOW’.

Shots of Pálinka, the Hungarian brandy that has a fruity taste. It has a minimum of alcohol content of 37.5%, which sounds high but you will surely like it because of the fruity and sweet taste. It’s good.

Budapest: New York Cafe, The Most Beautiful Cafe In The World

Eastern Europe Trip // Budapest: New York Cafe, The Most Beautiful Cafe In The World – How can you not visit the self-proclaimed ‘Most Beautiful Cafe In The World’ when you are in Budapest? The New York Cafe, located in a corner of Boscolo Budapest Hotel together with the hotel exterior beautifully lighted up. It looks luxurious, grand and just fascinating from the exterior and it looks even better from the inside!

So, after visiting the Alexandra Book Cafe and checking out this New York Cafe in Budapest, I find that there the hipster-style cafe in Malaysia that girls like to go there and take a selfie, high-tea and Instagram them are so out! HAHAHA. Just kidding, they are equally cool, but these two in Budapest are the best that I’ve been to!

The exterior of Boscolo Budapest Hotel that houses the New York Cafe looks magnificent at night.

    4 guys, 1 cafe. LOL.

Awesome Hot chocolate with caramel flavour & whipped cream. HUF1,790, about £5. Quite expensive, but still worth it.

Budapest: Very Beautiful Alexandra Book Cafe – Lotz Terem

Eastern Europe Trip // Budapest: Very Beautiful Alexandra Book Cafe – Lotz Terem – One of the thing you must do in Budapest is visit the beautiful cafe in this lovely city, filled with lovely architecture and lovely people like me! The cafe here is beautiful in a way of feeling grand, luxurious and European, it’s unlike any of the artsy or designer cafe in Penang or KL! It’s more than what you think, way better than a lot of European cafe.

There’s two cafe that I’ve visited in Budapest, one being the New York Cafe and the other one is this Alexandra Book Cafe that is so cool! A little bit hard to find at first and asking local about the place in English did not really help at all, we ended found that it’s quite near to Hungarian Opera House, and it’s located in a big book store name Alexandra. Initially we thought that the Book Cafe is a cafe that looks like a library, but it turned up to be a cafe that housed in the Alexandra Book Store.

It’s a very small cafe, but very happenings when we visited. The small luxurious interior with high ceilings, and the clanking of coffee cups further pulled me into the atmosphere.

The best chocolate cake I had, yet.

  • Budapest: Must Visit Szechenyi Baths For A Dip

Budapest: Must Visit Szechenyi Baths For A Dip

Eastern Europe Trip // Budapest: Must Visit Szehenyi Baths For A Dip – Budapest is famous for thermal bath, if you are happen to be in Budapest, be sure to visit any of the bath to have a good healthy, hot dip! I never know it’s that awesome after trying it out at the most famous one – Schzenyi Baths.

The Schchenyi Bath is the largest medicinal bath in Europe which medically speaking, dipping in the water in a correct way and at a correct duration is good for health! It’s a must do, but we did not know the correct way of acquiring the health benefit from it, so it was just a fun dip in the hot water, enjoying part of the body immerse in warm and relaxing 37C water and leaving the head out in the freezing weather.

Local people go there for medicinal purpose, but our visit was just a fun dip. During the free tour, the tour guide was like showing off that there’s so many genius Hungarian, one of the reason is that they often take a dip in the thermal bath, guess this dip would made us at least gain a little bit of IQ. LOL.

Szechenyi Bath is one of the most expensive bath in Budapest, but it’s also the most famous one and the largest one, so I think it was quite worthwhile. Price starting from 3800HUF (RM55), quite expensive for a dip in the hot water, but I tell you it’s gonna be fun especially hanging out there with a bunch of friends!

Perfect weather, perfect day for a bath!

The beautiful road in Budapest, beat UK’s!

The House Of Terror Museum, a famous museum about Nazi and high rating on TripAdvisor too, too bad we did not get to check it out.

Passed by the largest ice rink again!

Welcome to the outdoor pool people! Water at 37C, and outdoor is almost freezing point at 1C, the feeling was just great, especially cloth of walking out of the pool back into the indoor area.

Holy moly! You can check out their bath party at night too, which happens quite many times around the year!

It was already sunset when we were done we the bath!

Time to go, back to hostel!

  • Budapest: The City Looks Even More Beautiful At Night, Trust Me!

Budapest: The City Looks Even More Beautiful At Night, Trust Me!

Budapest: The City Looks Even More Beautiful At Night, Trust Me! – Free tour in the morning brought us to the main attractions for just a few hours, but that was already enough as the city was walkable. As usual, night came in early during winter at about 4pm and that’s the awesome self-walking night tour came in. Budapest lighted up beautifully at night during Christmas period which has more Christmas sensation than London, Krakow, nor Warsaw!

Christmas Market brought out the happenings feeling with people holding mulled wine on one hand and walking around, some standing under the heater lamp. We were just wandering around, looking for cheap but but ended got scam into buying expensive beautiful-looking Christmas sweets. Damn.

Looking at kids skating on the ice ring, enjoyed 10 minutes of peace in St Stephen Basilica and draining the remaining feet energy walking 2KM along the great Andrassy Avenue to Heroes Square and checked out the Schzenyi Baths and Vajdahunyad Castle were just tiring yet fun way to explore and spend the night in Budapest. Great day in this beautiful Budapest!

Chain Bridge and Budapest Castle lighted up!  Chain Bridge looks a bit like a miniature version of Brooklyn Bridge from here!

    Hungarian Science Academy!

Beautiful isn’t it? The glowing St Stephen Basilica.

    Inside St Stphen Basilica.

    Scam, don’t buy, it’s expensive!

Beautiful but I tell you it’s priced by weight and it’s heavy!

So down after eating these because we’ve got scammed at the market.

    Roasted pork, siu-yok-lookalike.

    Hungarian State Opera, side view.

    Alexandra Book Store.

Glowing ice rink at far end.

    Heroes Square!

This place claimed to be the largest ice rink in Europe, too bad I don’t get to skate on it.

    Peep into Schzenyi Baths. Cool!

    Schzenyi Baths from outside.

Vajdahunyad Castle, no idea what is this place but just visit it.

Yeah, statue sitting like a boss!

Budapest: Free Tour, Buda Castle, St Stephen Basilica & More Awesome Places In Day Time

Eastern Europe Trip // Budapest: Free Tour, Buda Castle, St Stephen Castle & More Awesome Places In Day Time – One thing I like about travelling in Europe is most of the famous cities have these free walking tour that brings you around the main attractions, tell you a little bit stories of the place and the best of all as I mentioned, it’s free. No fee, no pre-payment, but they call it tip-based free walking tour. That’s how they earn money, from your tips, but seriously you can choose not to tip the guide, it’s up to you. Well, we didn’t tip, as we were so tight on budget, and there’s also a little bit of cheapskate trait of Asian. LOL.

It’s a lovely day in Budapest, too bad it’s not a blue-ish sunny day, but this city made me excited. Culture-ful, friendly people, huge street, big buildings, historical, beautiful architecture and I find that Budapest is very attractive to me! There’s no tall and modern building in the city, they are old and classical, which makes the city really beautiful. Moreover, the road are really wide and big which makes me feel like being in a metropolitan city like New York, London. Cut the crap, and let the photos speaks!

Jewish Synagogue in Dohany Street. Till now, I still don’t get a chance to see how’s a Jewish Synagogue looks like from the inside, and most of them charge a fee to enter. If it’s so, then suak liao.

    The street has feel!

Traffic light for bicycle only, something you don’t really get to see in South East Asia.

    Our free tour guides!

No lock bridge in Budapest, but they just lock up the grill wrapping the lamp post.

And hey Clarice, guess what I’ve just found! 😛

Beautiful St Stephen Basilica at background.

Chain Bridge and Buda Castle at the back. This view is damn awesome!

    River Danube.

Closer look of Buda Castle, remember Katy Perry’s Fireworks? I’ll show you the night view in the next post.

Budapest Castle Hill Funicular, just reminds me of Penang Hill!

Sandor Palace, home of Hungarian President.

At the square beside Matthias Church.

    Embracing Budapest from Castle Hill.

Hungarian Parliament, one of the most awesome and largest Parliament building in the world. To be honest, this looks better than Palace of Westminster! What do you think?

Very old tram. 1313, a good number for Toto 4D Magnum. You can mix and match with 41 too!

    Hungarian Academy of Science.

    Jump.

Vaci Street, Main shopping street of Budapest.

    Pig at Great Market Hall.

More pig, it looks digusting with a hanging dead pig at the pork stall.

Hungarian Gyulai Sausage, something you should try there!

  • Budapest: Arriving via Student Agency Bus, Ride The Old Budapest Metro

Budapest: Arriving via Student Agency Bus, Ride The Old Budapest Metro

Eastern Europe Trip // Budapest: Arriving via Student Agency Bus, Ride The Old Budapest Metro -After spending 2 days 2 nights at Bratislava, we headed to Budapest, the capital of Hungary via Student Agency bus. The ride was about 3 hours and it was pretty comfortable if were to compare with Megabus.com. 30-something seats, with small entertainment screen and a compliment cup of hot chocolate, that’s pretty worthwhile for less than 10 Euro per person. One thing about bus in Europe is almost all of them are equipped with a small toilet for quick relieve. The only bus in Malaysia that has equipped toilet is Aeroline, which is my favourite too.

Day 1 of Budapest was nothing much as we spend most of the time around our hostel and wait a friend to arrive from London. Since it’s 4 days 3 nights in Budapest, so there’s plenty of time for us to explore. So I took the opportunity of first day to plan for the next 3 days.

Budapest was quite new to me but then it’s a lovely city with rich culture. Coming from Asia, Budapest is a place that I’ve not study before and the Hungarian language is just alien to me. I think I can’t find any Hungarian word that is close to English. It’s cool, at least the people in Budapest was really friendly. Anyway, check out the Budapest Metro photo below, it’s so old it feels like 1970s!

BlackSheep Hostel, the place we stayed in Budapest. A thumbs up for the hostel. Lovely staff and place.

Kebab, something that you must not be missed in Europe. They are everywhere! Cheap, and delicious.

The almighty New York Cafe, most beautiful cafe in the world. I shall write about it in another post.

    Lovely street at night.

    Burger for dinner!
