Malacca: Wan Tan Mee @ Dung Fong Food Court

Malacca: Wan Tan Mee @ Dung Fong Food Court – I’ve heard before that the Wan Tan Mee (Noodle) at Malacca is different from elsewhere of Malaysia, the Malaccan has their own version of Wan Tan Mee. Thus, I went to Malacca to identify and see how different it is.

I found a stall located near to the Tong Bee Seafood which is also recommended by one of the local there. I went there after my little sihum lala meal and it’s actually quite nearbu to each other but then the GPS somehow took me a big round to reach it, don’t know why.

In a little food court of Dong Feng, many people were waiting for the Wan Tan Mee, it came after 10 minutes of waiting. It’s RM4 per plate and what’s different is there’s sio bak/siu yok roasted pork on it! Normally Wan Tan Mee serves with BBQ pork cha siu, but this one has additional siu yok. The sauce or gravy is a bit more saturated than the normal waterish soy sauce. Indeed, it tasted different because of the gravy that contains a little bit of chilli oil or something like that which tasted a bit of spicyness that I like!

It’s not a big different as I expected, but it has it own style and I kinda like it with siu yok. If the style is mix with Penang’s and KL’s that it will be super awesome as Penang uses lard, Kuala Lumpur has very good BBQ pork and noodle whereas Malacca’s gravy is special.F Do check out this place if you wanna try out Malacca-style Wan Tan Mee.

  • Malacca: Back Alley Cockles, Lala, Cuttlefish Seafood @ Tong Bee’s Stall

Malacca: Back Alley Cockles, Lala, Cuttlefish Seafood @ Tong Bee’s Stall

Malacca: Back Alley Cockles, Lala, Cuttlefish Seafood @ Tong Bee’s Stall – In August, I went to Malacca with friends, but then I missed out quite some nice food spot in the little historical town and one of them is this little seafood stalls located at the back alley / lorong of Jalan Bunga Raya. Little seafood that I mean are those small stuff like lala, siham (cockles), cuttlefish, tiger prawns and some other non-seafood like BBQ toufu.

It’s a truly local style of food stall because firstly, it’s located on a back alley that you can hardly find it unless you walk into it, then you sit onto a low stool and share a long table with others. Very got feel and culture.

Notice King’s or MY JEANS FASHION. It’s the alley left to it.

It took me and Clarice a little while to search for it while driving on Jalan Bunga Raya and finally found it located beside My Jeans Fashion. You will be welcome and amazed by the little stalls located at the back alley, there’s two stalls and go for the one nearer to the street which is Tong Bee Stall, another one is operated by Capitol Satay Celup.

Famous TV food show host Axian came before too!
    Preparing.
    Sihum Cockles.
    Lala.
    Cuttlefish with Kangkung.

Sit down on the low stool and start ordering. There’s lala (RM1.50), sihum (RM1.50), cuttlefish with vege (RM7 for 2 person), tiger prawns and BBQ toufu. They are all very small plate and come with hot and sour chilli sauce which is good. Not forget to mention, the price is pretty reasonable too!

    Clarice with the lala.
Thumbs up initially, thumbs down for the unfortunate event.
Night comes to life at the quiet alley.

One unfortunate event was that I ate a very stinky sihum which taste like, dirty drain water or something shit, it just gave me a bad experience. Probably because it’s not clean enough from the mud. Ewwwww. It was a good head start, ended with a bad sihum. But overall, this is something interesting, smell your sihum before you put in your mouth. Haha.

  • Malacca: Nadeje Cafe Mille Crepe Cake

Malacca: Nadeje Cafe Mille Crepe Cake

    Malacca: Nadeje Cafe Crepe Cake

Malacca: Nadeje Cafe Crepe Cake – There’s one thing that is very famous in Malacca, not the Chicken Rice Ball, not the Cendul, not a typical local food but it’s a kind of desserts, it’s layered mille crepe cake (thousand layer cake 千层蛋糕). Malacca must be familiar with this name – Nadeje, a famous cafe that makes good crepe cake and has a variety of flavours of them.

    Malacca: Nadeje Cafe Crepe Cake

Every one was talking about it previously on Facebook, on Twitter and so here I am to check it out the place and of course, the crepe cake. There’s 3 outlets in Malacca, one in Melaka Raya, one in Dataran Pahlawan and the latest is at Jaya 99. We went to the most original outlet and that’s at Melaka Raya. It was 5.30pm and not surprise, people were waiting outside to be seated. It’s full house! We waited for like 20 minutes only then we got place to sit.

The interior decoration of the cafe is pretty cool and in a sense of contemporary design.

    Malacca: Nadeje Cafe Crepe Cake

    Malacca: Nadeje Cafe Crepe Cake

    Malacca: Nadeje Cafe Crepe Cake

Looking at the menu, there’s many food for you to eat like pasta, chicken chops and more, but our main purpose of the visit was the crepe cakes! We ordered the crepe cake first at the counter upon entering and it costs RM9.50/slice. There’s many choices for you to pick and we picked 4 to try out. They are:

    • Mango Crepe Cake
    • Tiramisu Crepe Cake
    • Chocolate Crepe Cake
    • Original Crepe Cake

They all looked very pretty. The first few taste of them were good, they were sweet, but not overly sweet, and a strong essence of milk can be felt on our taste bud. It was nice, but eating more of them started to make me feel bored of it, it’s just too much of milk. Maybe, maybe it’s not really my favourite thing, or maybe it’s just too much, but I just felt enough of it after eating half. Some says it’s over-rated, some says it’s good, well, I’ll say, it’s good, BUT, it’s my first time eating crepe cake, so I can’t judge whether it’s the best or not. What do you think?

One more thing, original and chocolate are awesome.

Malacca: Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle @ Jalan Bachang

Malacca: Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle @ Jalan Bachang – On my recent visit to Malacca, I have found a nice eatery outlet and that is this Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle shop at Jalan Bachang. It was introduced by a local Malaccan friend and he brought us here to try out. Malacca is always famous for Chicken Rice, Laksa, Cendol but this is something new to me.

Malacca: Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle @ Jalan Bachang

Malacca: Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle @ Jalan Bachang

Although it’s new to me, it has more than 30 years of history in Malacca and serves Taiwanese style beef noodle, pork rib noodle, and more of Taiwanese-style noodle. It’s something very special. Normally we only get to eat them in Taiwanese restaurant, but this one is located in a local-style kopitiam (coffee shop).

Malacca: Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle @ Jalan Bachang

It’s famous for Beef Noodle, you can choose either soup base, or dry base. Since it’s famous, I’ve ordered a dry one and it looks and tastes good! I’ve never been to Taiwan but I’ve been to a lot Taiwanese restaurant, I’ve got to say that this one is better. It’s spicy, the beef is soft and tender, and the thick flat noodle is very springy. Yums. Best of all, it’s only RM4.50, so much cheaper than those in Taiwanese restaurant in the mall.

Ignore the food presentation, it might not looks good, but it’s nice.

Malacca: Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle @ Jalan Bachang

Pork rib noodle @ RM4.20. A little soup with a few pieces of grilled pork rib. This one is not a spicy, the soup tasted a bit sweet and salty. Nice too.

Malacca: Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle @ Jalan Bachang

Zhajiangmian 炸酱面 @ RM4.20. Fried minced meat sauce noodles, didn’t try this, so I can’t comment on this.

Malacca: Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle @ Jalan Bachang

Little Min tagged along with us, she’s my friend, Jia Hui’s cousin. Cute right? Very talkative.

Well, the lunch was simply awesome, but the portion seems to be a little. You can order some side dish like beef soup, pork ribs and more to eat along. If there’s a chance, I wanna come back for it again.

Malacca: Happenings Night @ Geographer Cafe, Jonker Walk – Every Friday and Saturday night, this street – Jalan Hang Jebat, or widely known as Jonker Walk came alive with big crowds of people walking along the street with stalls selling food, souvenir, clothing as well as pub, cafe decorated with many antiques.

This is the best part of Malacca and always very happenings during the weekend’s night. Shopping and street food were not our main activity that night as we had filled our stomach with Satay Celup. So, we chilled out at the Geographer Cafe, together with some live band and beer.

  • Malacca: Super Long Queue Capitol Satay Celup

Malacca: Super Long Queue Capitol Satay Celup

Malacca: Super Long Queue Capitol Satay Celup – One of the famous food in Malacca is the Satay Celup. Well, to me, it’s just Lok-lok dipped into hot boiling satay peanut sauce. Let’s start talking about this famous Capitol Satay Celup in Malacca that everyone agrees that it’s famous…… for the long queue.

Malacca: Super Long Queue Capitol Satay Celup

The last time I went for Satay Celup was the Ban Lee Siang’s, but this time I came to try the most famous one. It was about 7.16pm and the queue span across for shop outlet. The queue was indeed, very long. Since we were already, just queue up and wait, we’ll then see how good it is.

Malacca: Super Long Queue Capitol Satay Celup

Malacca: Super Long Queue Capitol Satay Celup

Instinct tells me that all of the visitors to the Satay Celup were all tourists or not Malacca. The queue was really long and it took us about 2 hours + to get a table. Cars passed by, tourists walked by, and they looked at the queue, looked at us, some even photographed us.

Malacca: Super Long Queue Capitol Satay Celup

Actually, there’s another 2 outlet of Satay Celup located on the same row of Capitol’s. One have no customers, and another one has quite a number of customers, of course Capitol Satay Celup has the most. I think some people are lazy to queue and they go to another shop.

Queued from daylight to night falls, what we did was just talking all along, Facebook and talk again. I suggest you to get a chair, get ready some entertainment like video, or playing cards to wait. 2 hours, my friend! Or the best, don’t queue, don’t eat! I’m not going to queue again, I tell you.

Malacca: Super Long Queue Capitol Satay Celup

Malacca: Super Long Queue Capitol Satay Celup

Opens only at 5pm daily, and have a limited number of tables in a small space, Now I know why the long queue.

Malacca: Super Long Queue Capitol Satay Celup

Malacca: Super Long Queue Capitol Satay Celup

After 2 hour plus of waiting, of course it’s time to eat! Basically, Satay Celup is a dish where an assortment of raw and semi-cooked seafood, meat and vegetables on skewers are dunked into a boiling pot of peanut satay sauce. Each of the skewer costs RM0.90 and it damages me RM17 that night.

I have got to say, it’s not enough per stick like fish balls you only get two on a stick, or you get only one scallop on one stick. After trying it, the satay sauce does indeed taste different but then I still prefer Penang’s Lok-lok where you dip it in just boiling water, then you mix it with different sauce of your choice like satay sauce, tomyam sauce, chili, ginger and more instead of just one choice of sauce. Moreover, you get different pricing too in Penang instead of flat rate RM0.90, not to mention, better and fresher cockles in Penang.

Well, it’s my personal opinion. What do you think? If I would ever come back again for Satay Celup, I don’t wanna queue again (tired, not fun), I’m gonna go back to the Ban Lee Siang that I have been before, not this, just minus the cockles and the long queue. =)

  • Nyonya Laksa and Malacca Cendol in Jonker88, Malacca

Nyonya Laksa and Malacca Cendol in Jonker88, Malacca

Today I want to introduce a must visit cafe/restaurant along the famous Jonker Walk in Malacca. It doesn’t sell chicken rice ball but does have a wide variety of local street food like assam laksa, nyonya laksa, siam laksa, cendol, curry mee and more, all under one roof. Some might thing, it’s so not authentic when it comes all under one roof but actually the food are cook by different stalls inside this Jonker 88 Cafe.

It’s full of people from afternoon till night and I came by here twice, once was to try the laksa and another time to try the cendol as recommended by Internet people.

The interior is pretty nice as there’s many hanging pictures and antique stuff in it, thought one lousy thing is not clean, we spotted a rat ran over the place, that’s pretty crazy I feel. Without bothering the dirtyness, we just eat and go, didn’t wnat to spend long time at there as many were still waiting for the places.

The cendol is only RM2 and it’s very sweet, very nice and portion pretty big. What’s different from the one at the Clock Tower’s is this one is not so waterish as that, it’s more icy and the gula melaka is pour on top of the ice instead of the bottom. Yet, it’s still a good eat.

Next up we’ve got the Nyonya Laksa. I thought Nyonya Laksa is like Siam Laksa which has lemak (coconut milk) in it but it’s differnt, it’s close to assam laksa because of the sour taste and there’s egg, fu chok and some vegetable. What’s different is there’s no prawn paste like there’s in assam laksa.

Another thing is I think the Siam Laksa at here is pretty good-sell because that it had sold out when we wanted to order it. So we tried Nyonya, and not a bad try. Can try. Maybe you will like it. =)

One more thing, I am curious about the taste of assam laksa at there as now I am pretty confuse where is the origin of assam laksa, Penang or other place? Haha.

    Ignore me. =D

  • Ban Lee Siang Satay Celup for Supper

Ban Lee Siang Satay Celup for Supper

Satay Celup is the lok-lok of Malacca! How can you not eat Satay Celup when visit to Malacca? Haha. Basically Satay Celup is actually raw food on stick, then to be dipped into a kind of peanut satay sauce to cook the food. It’s like lok-lok which you cook your own stick food, just not dipping into boiling water. At this moment, I only find this Satay Celup in Malacca, and not anywhere else.

The one I visited when I was in Malacca was Ban Lee Siang. One of the two famous one, another is the Capitol which always has a long queue in front of the shop. Since Ban Lee Siang is near to where I stayed, so we went there on foot from Jonker Walk.

The price for per stick is RM0.60 flat rate but when you see it’s so cheap, you tend to take more and then turn out many money. And the food on stick is kinda little, so you need more to fill the stomach.

I actually pretty full after having my street food hunting on Jonker Walk so I didn’t eat much, just want to try the Satay Celup feel. Everything was fun, I like the way of dipping food into the peanut sauce, but then it lack of my favourite, si hum cockles. Haha. If there’s cockles, then it will be damn awesome. Hopefully there’s Satay Celup around Penang or KL, with cheap price of course. =D

  • Sotong Bakar, Bing Tang Hu Lao, Potato Roll in Jonker Walk, Malacca

Sotong Bakar, Bing Tang Hu Lao, Potato Roll in Jonker Walk, Malacca

As you know, I went to Malacca few weeks back, to look for some nice Malacca food and to check out the historical site. One of the famous attraction in Malacca is Jonker Walk, the famous night market on the weekend.

First up I want to talk about something I DISLIKE at the Jonker Walk which is the Sotong Bakar because it’s cost freaking RM10!!! The person somemore told me it’s freshly BBQ and it’s crispy but somehow it’s not crispy at all and it’s hard to bite. At first she said shi in Mandarin I thought is RM4, but actually she was saying 10. I have a little bit not satisfied with the price so I just pay and try, but somehow it’s just nothing special. No wonder so little people visit the stall. Don’t try it. It’s expensive!

There also have taiwanese sausage but so-so only when compare to the one in Kuala Lumpur.

Nice to see that there’s Bing Tang Hu Lao, a Chinese-style candy sold at there. It’s fruit dip into to sweet and it’s hardened. Not bad.

The best street food that I found on the Jonker Walk is this potato springy roll. It’s actually came from a piece of potato and then slowly sliced into this shaped then deep fried into crisp condition. Then topped with sauce like mayonaise, chili sauce or powder, cheese and more. It’s just simply delicious. I can’t find it in Penang nor Kuala Lumpur’s night market yet.

Well, if were to check the variety of street food in Jonker Walk, then unfortunately I have to say there’s not awesomely much, but the number of food still can fill up your stomach. There’s hawker stall at one end too. =)

  • Nice Yam Chicken Rice Ball at Famosa Chicken Rice Ball

Nice Yam Chicken Rice Ball at Famosa Chicken Rice Ball

I can’t resist myself not to write another chicken rice ball post for you. Haha. After sharing the not-so-nice chicken rice ball just now, I now want to share with you a better chicken rice ball at Famosa Chicken Rice Ball, which is another place that serve the ball rice on Jonker Walk,

    Hueisean say hello! =)

Hueisean kept telling me about some brown colour chicken rice ball which turned out to be the Yam Rice Ball, only served at this Famosa Chicken Rice Ball. This place is not as well-known as the long-time Chung Wah and Hoe Kee and just came in to business like last decade. It’s located in the middle of Jonker Walk and do attracted quite many customers.

We were just there to try the Yam Rice Ball and surprisingly it’s quite nice despite some bad review from the Internet. Pricing is quite reasonable in my opinion, starting from RM4.50 per set. Besides chicken rice ball, they do serves many other dishes too.

If you like yam rice, you can try out this place for the yam rice ball instead of chicken rice ball. Yum yum. There’s so many chicken rice ball shop in Malacca, why just stick to one?
