Trip To Penang: Site Visit To Mr Tan’s Culture Research Studio
Trip To Penang: Site Visit To Mr Tan’s Culture Research Studio – It was not a fully leisure trip after all, there’s still some little learning and assignment to do during the trip to Penang with my classmate last year. One of the task was site visit to Mr Tan Yeow Wooi’s Culture Research Studio on China Street and do some site analysis organized by Mr CK. We actually took that little shop house of Mr Tan’s as our site for my last design project which is a Nyonya’s restaurant. =DSo, we spent some times looking around for key space, did some measuring, photograph a lot for reference later then and feel the space. To be honest, it’s not easy to design a restaurant there as I can say that it’s one of the smallest Chinese shophoues in Penang. -

Trip To Penang: Peranakan Mansion
Trip To Penang: Peranakan Mansion – Continue back on the Penang Trip with my classmate, now we came to the Peranakan Mansion, one of the attractions that I have never been before, it’s my first time going there during the trip. All the while, I never visited before is because one need to buy ticket to go in, RM10/person if I am not mistaken and that’s why. Hahaha. Since I’ve paid for this little trip, so the Peranakan Mansion is included. It’s a museum, it’s a truly beautiful Peranakan Nyonya house with eclectic Straits Chinese decoration throughout the place. If you are a person who loves to learn about the history of Straits Chinese, this might be a good place for you to indulge into the culture, and history of Peranakan, or also known as Straits Chinese. It’s a very well-preserved place and it gives you another perspective of Penang. It’s not a very big house, but then it basically explains what’s the life of Straits Chinese in the olden days.So what I did there was just walk around and take photos. I didn’t really listen to the guided tour. Hehe. So let the pictures speak now.
Entrance!
Lovely column with ornaments.

Trip To Penang: Night Tour To Gurney Paragon
Trip To Penang: Night Tour To Gurney Paragon – Khoo Kongsi was the last stop for the day for the ‘Trip to Penang with DID Classmate’ and after that it’s night time and I brought a few friends for a private tour around Penang. I wanted to bring more people to see the night side of Penang but I have a car that only can fit 5 people in total so, sorry for them. XDWe went for food at 3rd Road Lebuh Presgrave, desserts at Kimberley Street, a quick tour of Straits Quay, and ended up to check out Gurney Drive and Gurney Paragon before taking them back to the hotel and call it a day. It’s quite tiring for the first day in Penang for everyone so there’s not much of night exploring, but there’s still more to go on the next day.In this new year of 2013, I am so looking forward to the opening of the new mall of Gurney Paragon. At the moment, Gurney Paragon has the front section – St. Jo’s Square open with F&B outlets as well as the two towers of luxurious condominiums. The mall at the back will open soon, mid of 2013 I assume and it’s gonna be awesome and high end.
Meal at Lebuh Presgrave for awesome supper Hokkien Prawn Mee. Wesley was complaining about the spiciness of Char Koay Teow. Oh oh oh, it’s not spicy to me.
The quiet street at night.
Here we at Gurney Paragon.
By the seaside of Gurney Drive. Arvin, Wesley, Jia Hui and Steve.
Beautiful, colourful water fountain. I’ll stop sharing here and go to bed now, working tomorrow! Good night!

Trip To Penang: Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi
Trip To Penang: Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi – One of my favourite place in Penang is this Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi or also known aas the Khoo Clan House. It’s a very small little neighbourhood where Khoo family used to live together with house surrounding the family temple. Of course, it’s one of the must-visit for my friends of DID (Diploma In Interior Design) from different countries and states.
It’s getting hot that afternoon so there’s not much time spend outside and I spent more time inside the Khoo Templeb which is also a musuem. Well, you don’t really get to visit the temple during free open visit like at Chinese New Year time, I did pay for this tour so I’m gonna check out the inside thoroughly.
It’s pretty interesting to check out the Khoo Kongsi as it’s one of the largest Chinese clan house in Penang and the architecture, carving and arts are just awesomely beautiful. Touch and feel the material, the history of this place and that’s what I did, and …. I didn’t really feel anything, except the texture. HAHA.

Arvin at the back, Wesley, Steve at the back, me and Jia Hui.
The Parentage Society Of Khoo Clan. Lovely!
Serious face! Super serious!
The kitchen setting of old time. Sweet.

Trip To Penang: Little India’s Sri Mahamariamman Temple
Trip To Penang: Little India’s Sri Mahamariamman Temple – I actually skip one place and that is the Kuan Yin Temple, I’ve been there for so many time so I’ve decided not to follow them into the heaty Kuan Yin Temple. After the St George’s Church, the Kuan Yin Temple, now across the road and we reached the Little India of Penang, a street full of Indian retail shop and also the worship place of the Indian, an Indian temple of Sri Mahamariamman.Unfortunately, temple was closed that day, there’s not much of touring, as usual, the Mr Tour Guide gave a introduction of the place and we went off to somewhere else, next is to the Khoo Kongsi, one of my favourite place in Penang with awesome old Straits Chinese architecture. Anyway, before heading to Khoo Kongsi, let’s check out what happened around Little India. -

Trip To Penang: St George’s Church
Trip To Penang: St George’s Church – Was organizing the photo library of my computer and found out that there’s one album that I have not uploaded to the Facebook or the blog and here I want to share with you guys. You might notice that my title is kinda weird, I am from Penang, why a trip to Penang? It’s actually happened last year when my class (Diploma In Interior Design, DID) had a study trip to Penang and I joined the tour along! =)I’ve been promoting Penang quite a lot to them and finally they get to check out this lovely little island organized by Mr CK. Looking back at this photos, it was such a fun trip together and it’s seems long then the whole class haven’t been anywhere together, hopefully there’s a little trip together I hope.
Steve, Jia Hui, with Arvin at the back and me holding the camera. During the trip in Penang with the classmate, I followed a tour leaded by the Penang Heritage Trust. Anyone may ask them to bring you on a guided walking tour around the town too for an amount of money, I am not sure how much they charge but you may visit the website for more. The first stop was the St George’s Church at Pitt Street, one of the famous church in George Town. -

Penang: 宰牛后粿条汤 Nice Koay Teow Thng Dinner @ Beach Street
Penang: 宰牛后粿条汤 Nice Koay Teow Thng Dinner @ Beach Street – The Koay Teow Th’ng stall is actually at the intersection of Lebuh Melayu and Beach Street (Lebuh Pantai), located right in front of the very old MCA shophouse. Well, it’s my dinner for my Sunday night and I’ve got to say, it’d been a long time I didn’t eat Koay Teow Th’ng already and this one really cheered my taste buds up.
Finally, I found a good Koay Teow Th’ng stall in Penang with awesome fish balls and sweet soup with lots of lard, in addition a reasonable price too! The stall operates at night for dinner. We ordered 3 bowl of Koay Teow Soup and a small bowl of vegetable, the total costs us only RM15.
The fish ball has the springy feeling that’s not like those factory made one and the person is very generous too, adding a lot of chicken meat as well as the garlic and lard into soup which makes the soup taste even tastier.
Yums! I will come back again. Do you like/dare to eat pork lard? It’s very unhealthy and I dare. XD

Penang: Sip & Chew Cafe

Front facade, super simple. Penang: Sip & Chew Cafe – Sip & Chew Cafe is a very very new restaurant/cafe located on Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, or English – Pitt Street. I went there on Christmas Day with Clarice. How I found out about this place is through Instagram where some random people I followed posted about it.

Here’s me and Clarice. With much curiousity, I wandered around the street to find the place. It took me some times to find it and it’s actually located just next to the famous Kuan Yin Teng Temple. It was night time, and surprised to see the restaurant has only 4 tables inside and 2 outside. I assumed it’s a small scale cafe. Nevertheless, we went in and gave it a try despite the little customers.
The staff was very friendly which worth a little mention. Sip & Chew serves western cuisine and their famous is the sandwiches, but we didn’t order cause I wanted something bigger portion to ease my hungriness.

Potato salad as starter. Yums.
Mushroom soup, which is pretty standard, taste like Pizza Hut’s. =D We ordered a set of Christmas Set dinner worth of RM24.90 and a Grilled Chicken With BBQ Sauce from the a la carte menu. From starter to main course were delightful, and there’s still room for improvement like the grilled fish with brown sauce was a little bit too salty. Other than that were pretty OK, and the very best part was the Flower Pot Desserts which Clarice and I like the most.

Grilled Chicken with BBQ Sauce which I like.
Grilled fish with brown sauce which is rather salty on my taste buds.
HAPPY POTTED PLANT. Lo and behold, the mighty flower in a pot dessert! What is it? Flower it is, not edible, but the mud, the organics are edible!
Cute! It’s Oreo grinned into powder that looks like sand and at the bottom, there’s ice cream, and a layer of cake. The owner told us that the menu will be revised again, and I am looking forward for my next visit for the Flower Pot Desserts again, perhaps try some other food too, sandwich maybe?
Heard that there’s a similar dessert at All Seasons Place, Farlim there, it’s cheese cake instead of ice cream, anyone know about it?

Penang: RM2.50 Hokkien Prawn Mee For Breakfast, Jalan Perak

The Hokkien Prawn Mee stall. Penang: RM2.50 Hokkien Prawn Mee For Breakfast, Jalan Perak – Yes, you read it right, a bowl of Hokkien Prawn Mee in Penang is only RM2.50! (Selected place only, haha). Anyway, this was my breakfast few days back in Penang and it was at Jalan Perak, introduced to me by Yiphing.

My favourite food in Penang. It’s not the best hokkien mee out there and one thing interesting about Penang food is that most of the local food, doesn’t matter famous or not, they are still OKOK-quite-good. For this kind of price, nothing much you can complain for a morning breakfast. By the way, there’s a very famous and better Hokkien Prawn Mee around that area too, but sold out quite early.

Funny to see the technology MP (Member of Parliament) Jeff Ooi at the back of t-shirt in the kopitiam. Update: Latest news is that it has increase price to RM2.70, don’t know true or not.
