Sia Boey Park – Penang’s Own Central Park That We Are Proud Of

Officially known as Sia Boey Urban Archaeological Park, this miniature city park is located in the heart of George Town, yes, literary in the centre of this city, just like the iconic Central Park in New York City, except that it’s just a small fraction size of the real one.

Sia Boey – I remembered this was the place where I went with dad to buy firecrackers for Chinese New Year when I was little. Later, this place was not heard of as it was barricaded, at first heard that they were redeveloping this area, and later the local government announced to turn it into a city park. It took them really long to realise this project, and finally it was opened in November 2019.

I checked out the park late, like just recently but it’s fascinating. It was controversial at first as some social media postings show that the once dirty Prangin Canal that run through the park has been thoroughly cleaned, so clean that it has Koi fish swimming in the canal. However, the planner did a great job diverted the canal and created a ‘pond’ through the existing Prangin Canal and breed Koi fish in it. The Koi fish is the main attraction of this park actually.

Day it would be a little too hot to spend time in the park, but the pond and shades do attract park goers. Night time would be very busy, with children running and playing at the play ground, filling the atmosphere with laughter; there’s even a upbeat cha-cha dance activity going on at the market hall space.

Let’s hope more public parks will sprout out in Penang. It’s just wonderful to bring harmony into the community.

  • Kampung Agong, A Bali-Inspired Hidden Instagramable Spot in Penang

Kampung Agong, A Bali-Inspired Hidden Instagramable Spot in Penang

Kampung Agong, a very interesting place located near to Kepala Batas, about 45 minutes drive from George Town. It has Bali-inspired swing-tie-to-coconut-tree and picturesque bird nest spot. Instead of having a Balinese green terrace backdrop, Kampung Agong however has its own charm – the green paddy field.

Instagram-fans must visit this place as it could easily took up a couple hours there just to take good shot. Best of all, entry fee is RM5 for Malaysian only. For local, it’s worth taking the trip to here, but if you are traveling to Penang for the first time, consider this only when you have finish touring the beautiful George Town, and it’s not easy to get here unless you drive.

There’s a stall selling fresh coconut, do not expect pandan-ish sweet coconut, but it’s refreshing enough as you can catch real action of plucking coconut.

Note: Remember to clear your pocket, or zip your bag well when you are on the swing. Why? One of us dropped our iPhone into the muddy paddy field while on the swing, luckily it didn’t gone far and iPhone 11 has a good IP rating!

Penang Secret Avatar Garden & Seafood Dinner At Pearl Garden

It’s no more secret anymore as the name on Google maps shows ‘Secret Avatar Garden’ as many people has been flocking into this little north east corner of Penang where the historical Tua Pek Kong shrine is located at. Tanjung Tokong Tua Pek Kong Temple is the commonly known name which has been around for century and the small seafood cafe still standing strong after decades and business gets rocketed with this ‘Secret Avatar Garden’.

Satay was OK, so I did not take any photo of it.

Checking out the century old shrine before heading to the hilly slope to see the installation.

View tower on the beach lights up with cool neon light.

So what’s this secretive all about? A man-made light installation on the tree top that resembles the magical look of the famous James Cameron’s flick – Avatar. This is not Jiuzhaigou hilly forest, but I am confident the the light installation will amaze you.

There’s a old bunker by the seaside and it looks extremely amazing with this neon colour.

    How about some Chinese Chess?

A visit to this place would be nice during evening before sunset to catch a glimpse of the beautiful straits and enjoy a little simple seafood meal. Nothing fancy, just grilled crab, steamed prawn, fried noodles and coconut juice, it makes a simple meal great though. As night falls, the light installation turns on and you can slowly make your way to the hilly slope at the back of the seafood place.

It’s crowded, even during weekdays, and it’s no doubt became the new attraction of Penang. Have fun!

    Here are some tips:

    • Just drive your car all the way to the beach, there’s car park attendant collecting payment and they will help you to look for a good parking spot. Parking @ RM3.
    • Weekday visit would be good, weekend would be crowded, on the road.
    • Seafood is reasonable, so have a feast first before checking out the area.
    • Going over by Grab/Uber? Just key in – Thai Pak Koong Temple Tanjung Tokong.
  • Trip To Penang: Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion & Penang Road Chendul

Trip To Penang: Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion & Penang Road Chendul

Trip To Penang: Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion & Penang Road Chendul – After spending about an hour or less at the Peranakan Mansion, the next and also the last place to go with the PHT’s tour guide is the Blue Mansion, real name – Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. A very blue mansion that is rated top 10 mansion in the world by Yahoo! Travel.
So, what’s so special about it? The special thing is you can take photos of it outside but inside, you are not allow to take any photos. So, sucks. The real special and cool thing is that the mansion was own by Cheong Fatt Tze, a super duper rich businessman from China. Then the mansion was built with a almost perfect feng shui setup which I don’t know how to explain, so you have to go there for a little tour to get the clue about it.
Right now, it’s like a musuem, nothing much to see in there except listening to the tour guide explain about the place and it’s a hotel inside for tourist.

Outside is fascinating, inside the feng shui explanation is cool, other than that, that’s it. It’s an OKOK-place for me, if I can snap pictures inside, it could be even awesome-er.
Then,  it’s time to bid good bye to the Mr Tour Guide from PHT and it’s a very hot noon, I brought the same bunch of friends to some special treatment and that’s – Chendul! They all only know about Malacca’s Chendul, now they get to know another awesome Chendul in Malaysia – Penang Road Teochew Chendul! It’s so refreshing eating chendul under the hot weather.

    Do you like Penang’s Chendul?

  • Trip To Penang: Batu Ferringhi Beach

Trip To Penang: Batu Ferringhi Beach

Trip To Penang: Batu Ferringhi Beach – Site analysis for assignment done! Now head to the beach, for some leisure time. It’s quite random and weird for a big group of people to head to the beach without a proper swim wear and the duration was just 2 hours. Some of the international students did really go for the water sports which cost as high as RM50-RM100. I don’t really know about the pricing as I was just camwhoring around with my friends, enjoying the sea breeze and seeing the other class of students parasailing and banana boating. Interesting! I want to play water sports, but not in Penang’s beach, Phuket maybe?
By the way, look back to this, it’s funny also, because 3PM under the scorching hot sun, at the beach, nothing to do.
Headcount: Me, Arvin, Jia Hui, Steve and Wesley. These faces will appear throughout the post. So one time of headcount is enough. =D
    Jump one. Looking funny. HAHA
Jump two and I like my jump!

  • Trip To Penang: Peranakan Mansion

    Trip To Penang: Peranakan Mansion

Trip To Penang: Peranakan Mansion – Continue back on the Penang Trip with my classmate, now we came to the Peranakan Mansion, one of the attractions that I have never been before, it’s my first time going there during the trip. All the while, I never visited before is because one need to buy ticket to go in, RM10/person if I am not mistaken and that’s why. Hahaha. Since I’ve paid for this little trip, so the Peranakan Mansion is included.
It’s a museum, it’s a truly beautiful Peranakan Nyonya house with eclectic Straits Chinese decoration throughout the place. If you are a person who loves to learn about the history of Straits Chinese, this might be a good place for you to indulge into the culture, and history of Peranakan, or also known as Straits Chinese. It’s a very well-preserved place and it gives you another perspective of Penang. It’s not a very big house, but then it basically explains what’s the life of Straits Chinese in the olden days.
So what I did there was just walk around and take photos. I didn’t really listen to the guided tour. Hehe. So let the pictures speak now.
    Entrance!
    Lovely column with ornaments.
Us again – Arvin, Jia Hui, me, Wesley and Steve.

  • Trip To Penang: Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi

Trip To Penang: Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi

Trip To Penang: Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi – One of my favourite place in Penang is this Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi or also known aas the Khoo Clan House. It’s a very small little neighbourhood where Khoo family used to live together with house surrounding the family temple. Of course, it’s one of the must-visit for my friends of DID (Diploma In Interior Design) from different countries and states.

It’s getting hot that afternoon so there’s not much time spend outside and I spent more time inside the Khoo Templeb which is also a musuem. Well, you don’t really get to visit the temple during free open visit like at Chinese New Year time, I did pay for this tour so I’m gonna check out the inside thoroughly.

It’s pretty interesting to check out the Khoo Kongsi as it’s one of the largest Chinese clan house in Penang and the architecture, carving and arts are just awesomely beautiful. Touch and feel the material, the history of this place and that’s what I did, and …. I didn’t really feel anything, except the texture. HAHA.

Arvin at the back, Wesley, Steve at the back, me and Jia Hui.
The Parentage Society Of Khoo Clan. Lovely!

  • Trip To Penang: Little India’s Sri Mahamariamman Temple

Trip To Penang: Little India’s Sri Mahamariamman Temple

Trip To Penang: Little India’s Sri Mahamariamman Temple – I actually skip one place and that is the Kuan Yin Temple, I’ve been there for so many time so I’ve decided not to follow them into the heaty Kuan Yin Temple. After the St George’s Church, the Kuan Yin Temple, now across the road and we reached the Little India of Penang, a street full of Indian retail shop and also the worship place of the Indian, an Indian temple of Sri Mahamariamman.
Unfortunately, temple was closed that day, there’s not much of touring, as usual, the Mr Tour Guide gave a introduction of the place and we went off to somewhere else, next is to the Khoo Kongsi, one of my favourite place in Penang with awesome old Straits Chinese architecture. Anyway, before heading to Khoo Kongsi, let’s check out what happened around Little India.
Mr Mahrad J something something, I don’t know how to spell his name, MJ is what I call him all the time.

  • Trip To Penang: St George’s Church

Trip To Penang: St George’s Church

Trip To Penang: St George’s Church – Was organizing the photo library of my computer and found out that there’s one album that I have not uploaded to the Facebook or the blog and here I want to share with you guys. You might notice that my title is kinda weird, I am from Penang, why a trip to Penang? It’s actually happened last year when my class (Diploma In Interior Design, DID) had a study trip to Penang and I joined the tour along! =)
I’ve been promoting Penang quite a lot to them and finally they get to check out this lovely little island organized by Mr CK. Looking back at this photos, it was such a fun trip together and it’s seems long then the whole class haven’t been anywhere together, hopefully there’s a little trip together I hope.
Steve, Jia Hui, with Arvin at the back and me holding the camera.
During the trip in Penang with the classmate, I followed a tour leaded by the Penang Heritage Trust. Anyone may ask them to bring you on a guided walking tour around the town too for an amount of money, I am not sure how much they charge but you may visit the website for more. The first stop was the St George’s Church at Pitt Street, one of the famous church in George Town.
Fahdran, oh long time no see.
The guide from PHT which I’ve forgotten your name. Oops. Mr… Err…
Explaining the history oh long long long ago.
    Lovely clock tower.
    Jia Hui & Nita!
    Here’s me, Wesley and Steve.
    And Arvin with the pigeons.
Remember to come back often to follow me on my trip around Penang. Hehe.
