  • Adventurous Hike from Botanical Garden to Penang Hill through Old Craig Hotel

Adventurous Hike from Botanical Garden to Penang Hill through Old Craig Hotel

Since last year, I have developed a love in hiking/jungle trekking in Penang’s rainforest; mainly because not able to do travel and I had to explore some adventure in my hometown, at the same time getting myself into fitness activity – I do consider myself not fitness active though I would want to get into this good habit.

Since reopening during the pandemic, I did various route of hiking trail in Penang which the recent one, also the most exciting and adventurous one is this trail to Penang Hill from Botanical Garden via Old Craig Hotel.

In hiking, I have this weird pattern that I like one-way trail. Like hiking up to Penang Hill, then take the tram/jeep down. It’s like my persistence is not there to do a return trip, however I do not mind a long one-way trip. (I once did a long one-way hike from Youth Park to Rifle Range, even longer than a return trip but it was really satisfying)

Now, coming back to this fun New Year hike, we started off meeting at Botanical Garden; with no one had experience doing this trail, we embarked on a journey by following All Trails GPS and a blog post guide. We do not have any idea on how long the hike would be, and thus did not do a good prep – bringing enough water and energy bar/snacks.

Tip: Good shoes, insect repellent, long trousers, energy bar and plenty of water.

The hike was really very long for beginner like us; but the long trail was definitely worth it, that I only realised the rainforest is very amazing, with different scenery along the way.

Starting from the trail that leads to station 46, it began with a long climb up the stairs. By following the GPS map, instead of heading to station 46, you’d need to detour to restricted area ala the Waterfall route. Instead of heading down to the waterfall base, continue along the route. Don’t be surprise part of the route was narrow but opened enough for 1-person.

By following the GPS indicator on All Trails app, you would pass by RG3 and RG4; RG stands for Rain Gauge and it’s my first time seeing this instrument. 2hours took us to the junction of Zizai Hill (towards Tanjung Bungah) and RG9 (towards Penang Hill).

Note the sign along the way, it’s fairly easy and will not get lost. Interestingly, the whole Penang Hill is connected and Zizai Hill – another trail that I am excited cross path with me.

Met several hikers coming from Tanjung Bungah, heading towards the same direction, we followed them. However that did not last long as their speed was really fast.

Again, please bring enough water and food. I still can remember the feeling of being exhausted and need food! After passing through RG9, the trail was a surprise as it was a downhill towards a valley and later uphill. Feeling weird as we were in the middle of the hill and valley, it’s something that was not experienced before as I thought hiking is suppose to be all ascend; but this is crossing Penang Hill’s spine thus going down and up again.

Here comes the challenging part – before almost reaching the Old Craig Hotel, there’s a part that need to climb via rope. This was the most interesting part to me.

After 1.5 hours from RG9, we were very near to Old Craig Hotel when we see a long drain, follow the drain line towards right and the Old Craig Hotel would be insight!

Slight right, follow the drain direction and you will find the old Craig Hotel, like time capsule unveils in front of you.

Craig Hotel – an abandoned hotel and former school (Uplands) on the north edge of Penang Hill. Pity that it’s abandoned otherwise it’s a lovely site for vacation.

Few years back it was used as a film set for Indian Summers, thus don’t be surprise to see some modern fixture at the building. I explored a little of the abandoned building, a little eerie but was fun to look at how time stood still.

Spent not more than 30 minutes there, felt the time capsule atmosphere and we continue to head to Penang Hill. You would pass by a bridge and site keepers residence then onto the jeep road.

Read that one maybe denied entry from the top of Penang Hill as the site keeper dislike people visiting the hotel; though there were no complain if we coming from the bottom.

4 hours of hike with good scenery, people, and earned a good meal and fitness achievement. I want to do this trail again!

Tip 2: If the queue time to tram is too long, take the jeep; nego a good rate and they take you straight back to Botanical Garden.

Trail Guide (Use at your own risk, borrow from this blog):

    1. Start inside Botanical Garden Hiking Trail to Point 46 (20 minutes stairs ascend to levelled area)
    2. Continue right to Water Catchment Area (Restricted Area sign, you are free to go further)
    3. Cross the river and follow the trail, will reach a junction. (10-15 minutes from levelled area)
    4. At junction, take left turn (note sign for RG3)
    5. Uphill hike for 10-15 minutes and will reach RG3.
    6. Continue on the only trail to reach RG4.
    7. Continue along the trail you will meet a junction – straight slight left RG9 or right towards Teik Quarry (also is Zizai Hill trail from Tanjung Bungah)
    8. At RG9, take left path (the straight path goes to Batu Ferringhi) and start descend downhill (heading towards a valley)
    9. Cross an underground stream and later will meet a challenging part with rope climbing up to the top.
    10. Continue on for 30 minutes and will meet the drain and follow the right path.
    11. Reach Old Craig Hotel.
    12. Continue towards the entrance of Old Craig Hotel, cross the wooden bridge to reach tar road.
    13. Walk along tar road to reach main Jeep Road, go ascend to reach Penang Hill.

    Happy Hiking!

Monkey Beach & Muka Head LightHouse Are Penang’s Hidden Treasures

Monkey Beach & Muka Head Light House Are Penang’s Hidden Treasures – Located at the far North West end of Penang island where the country’s smallest national park is – Taman Negara Teluk Bahang, there lies a few trekking routes in this mini rainforest. I’ve trekked the Pantai Kerachut route before and this time was to Monkey Beach which further leads up to the Muka Head Lighthouse.

Didn’t knowing about the difficulty of the trek, we just embarked on a walk in the rainforest with route lies by the seaside. It was a nice morning, joining explorers from different places. Though, I realised that the crowds had increased compare to years ago where it was still a quiet national park.

Upon registering yourself at the national park, the trek to Monkey Beach took an hour for us and we were welcomed by a pristine ivory sandy beach, but without the crystal clear water. Stalls trying to make some money out of the hot weather with cold drinks and light food were aligned on the beach with boat operator touting visitors to take their boat to another side or back to the port.

Not many people was in the water due to the presence of jelly fish, but the beach was not overly crowded like Batu Ferringhi, but happenings.

The real trek started from Monkey Beach to Muka Head with 45 minutes of full ascending route which exhausted my energy pretty much upon reaching the top. It’s difficult, for a person without much regular exercises. BUT, the top was definitely not disappointing with a very good breeze and a beautiful peaceful view of another side of Penang that one doesn’t see usually.

Spent half an hour up there for a short rest before leaving back to the beach and hired one of the boat (RM40/boat) to take 6 of us back to the entrance.

  • Semenyih: Hiking The Broga Hill

    Semenyih: Hiking The Broga Hill

Semenyih: Hiking The Broga Hill – Finally, I hiked the Broga Hill. I have always wanted to hike this little hill at the small rural town of Semenyih for a long time. 2 years ago, I planned the trip, but it never fulfilled. Now, with 6 more months left in Kuala Lumpur, I have to explore the places around as much as I can and never come back. Haha, just kidding. It’s just that my diploma studies is ending in August and that’s why.
Beautiful trail with twinkle twinkle little torch.
Back to Broga Hill, the famous hill for hiking to the people in Klang Valley and Seremban as it’s at the border of Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. It’s located very far away from the city, about 50 minutes drive from Bandar Sunway. So last week, me and friends gathered at Taylor’s University as early as 4.30am, set up the GPS and followed the navigation and GO! I’ve got to tell you, prepare to meet 4-5 tolls before reaching Broga Hill, gosh, road tolls are killing my wallet. It’s very near to Nottingham University, passed the uni and drive for another 5 minutes then you will arrive then.
We reached the place about 5.45am, there’s already many car parked at the palm plantation area (the entrance is right opposite the Rabbit Fun Land). RM2 for parking and I am not sure whether the person really own the place. Just to be safe, pay for the RM2. It’s pitched dark, and very chilly early in the morning and many people were already there for an early hike waiting to see the sunrise!
At the top! Waiting. It’s still very early.
    The leak of twilight. Lovely.
I relies on my phone’s flash light as guide, but my friends brought actual flash light to light up the hiking trail. It’s not a tall hill, but I’ve got to say, the hike is pretty challenging at some point because there’s no proper hiking steps. The hardest part is when reaching the first station where the hike gets exciting because the way up is very slanted. Be sure you have a good pair of shoes or you would just have to climb it, with hands on the floor too. HAHA.
    Gary gor!
    Henry gor!
Lin Jia and Wei Kean dailou. Nice to meet you new friend.
    Quenna and Siyi. =)
Xinli and Hooi Pheng. =) Nice to meet you new friend.
Quenna, Connie, Wei Shi and Wei Kean.
Reached the first station at about 6.45am and there’s so many people up there already! Everyone was just chatting around, taking photos, and waiting for the sunrise! What you see up there is just another hill and the small little town of Broga and Semenyih. It’s interesting that the top of the hill has no tress and it’s all couch grass.
TWILIGHT ZONE. Oh my lovely nature.
    Ghia Jun & Zee Yin.
Google told me that 7.24am was the sunrise time at Semenyih, but the actual sun rise above another hill was at about 7.40am. It takes some times for the sun to get up the hill. HAHA.
    Hello my lovely SUN.
Ah, I just love waiting for sunrise so much, it’s my new hobby lately! After that we just went down as we were hungry and it’s getting warm. Getting down seems to be more difficult than going up as it’s so steep and really have to be careful, my friend had a small bruised on her knee. Just have to be really careful, help each other at there, or just wear a tracksuit to prevent cuts and bruises from small fall.
    ME, the blogger.
    With the girls.
Love this picture a lot. Thought it would turned out silhouette, but a nice over exposed of the sun and nice composition of beautiful us. By the way, it’s all interior designers here in the photo. =D
Little stalls selling coconut and soft drinks await you at the foot hill. HAHA.
    Carpark.
Afterall, it’s a very nice and exciting hike. Sorry for writing the post that long, I will bring you to Kampung Broga and an awesome Chinese Temple with Shun Yu Kong Monkey King in the next posts. =D
  • Hike Penang Hill And Ride Rapid Penang Back

Hike Penang Hill And Ride Rapid Penang Back

Hike Penang Hill And Ride Rapid Penang Back
    #1. Random faces.

Hike Penang Hill And Ride Rapid Penang Back – 8 guys, including me, previously from Penang’s famous boys school, Chung Ling High School went for a hike from Botanical Garden to Penang Hill.

Oh man! It’d been some times that I did not hike the 800+m vertical height Penang Hill for some times. The last time was like, 2 years back? It’s not easy for us, HAHA, it took us for 2 hour plus, almost 2 and a half hours to reach the top which avid hikers normally take one an a half hour non stop or some pro run up for like 45 minutes. Those who run up the slope are really crazy.

    #2: Random faces two.

I think it’s quite reasonable for us to take such a long time up because we were having our sweet time up, talking, joking and laughing all the way. Now I rethink whether I can climb the Mount Kinabalu at Sabah or not. HAHA. It needs great stamina.

#3: Top of the hill with many tourists. Woohoo. Actually Penang Hill got nothing one lo, what do you think?

Finally reached the top of Penang Hill at 10 something where we started at 8 something. Felt very happy when we reached the top as I know I do not need to suffer any more. LOL. I must train more already.

    #4: Not good fried rice.

Went to eat fried rice at the hawker stalls area for brunch and chit chat at there. Frankly, the fried rice sell by the Chinese seller was not that rice. I prefer the Malay stall at the end of the hawker stalls area. One plate of this egg fried rice without prawn cost RM4.50. WOW. Now only I know that you can’t order food from other stall at the table we sit because different stall manages different table.

#5: Is me, playing with the phone I guess.

    #6: Yan Chien Chern.

    #7: Arron Lim.

#8: Me (look like a kid), Merritt, Xiang Foong, Yong Fu, Chien Chern.

#9: Chien Chern again, Alvin, me and Arron.

#1o: The bushes which block the view of Penang city.

#11: Clearer view of George Town, awesome!

I feel Penang Hill is quite a relaxing place because when there’s wind blows up there, it feels very chilly and cool and at the same time can enjoy the beautiful view of Penang.

#12: David Brown’s Sky Terrace. Expensive restaurant! Hmm.

We bought the tram ticket at RM4 per student price person and then we went down of Penang Hill. So nice that there’s no long queue like the Hong Kong tram that I went recently and I feel the tram service in Penang is very world class one. Haha.

    #13: The gang.

    #14: Road.

#15: Road in front of Chung Ling High School.

    #16: My high school!

We wanted to take the Rapid Penang public bus back home but then we didn’t see any bus passes Penang Hill area, then we walked directly to the place where more Rapid Penang buses pass by and that’s Shang Wu Primary, pass Chung Ling High School and it’s like 3km away. Very power, because call the way we didn’t see any bus also, I wonder where all the buses gone when we were walking.

    #17: In Rapid Penang bus.

#18: At the bus interchange station, Komtar.

It’s been so long that I did not take the Rapid Penang bus too. Still the same, getting more people in the bus but not as much as in other big city. No upgrade or improvement I can see yet. I wonder when they will implement Touch N’ Go system and introduce double decker buses.  Hmm.

  • Video: Hiking To Moongate

    Video: Hiking To Moongate

I went to hiking again last week with Merritt and Kenny this time. And this time, I brought my Panasonic Lumix LX5 with me so I could shoot some video clip. I like kinda addicted with video lately, high def video rocks but then there’s limitation on a mini digital camera cause I can’t manual focus and have shallow depth of field. I hope that this year I can buy myself a video DSLR like the Canon EOS 7D. =D

Well, cut the crap and check out the short clip that I compiled with the Apple iMovie.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bIE3ZCz4SQ&w=640&h=385]

And this film trailer style clip. I feel it’s kinda cute. Haha.

  • Hiking And Helping Out A Kids Camp

Hiking And Helping Out A Kids Camp

Have not been to hiking for a while already. Recently, Merritt invited me to hiking at Penang Municipal Park, also known as Youth Park for most people, and then I started to go hiking again. Woo. Hiking is fun because can see the green, breath in fresh air and also take a nice view of the city from high.

    Zez Chien

Hock Sheng, the one who sat beside me last year and always slept in class.

    Yiphing, the flat head.

I went to hiking on one Friday with Yiphing and Arron. Luckily I brought along a camera, so I could record down some of our hiking fun in pictures.

So ngam, they wore the same shirt. Arron and Zez Chien.

After some chit chat chit chat with them, we 3 started the hike from the ground to the top which they call it station no 5, Moon Gate. What a lovely name. Haha. There’s actually another hiking trail located in the Botanical Garden which leads up to the top of Penang Hill. I prefer something light and easy though. =)

I can actually see my house from here. LOL.

    This is Station 3.

The hike to Moon Gate or Station No 3 which is the station before Moon Gate, there’s a nice platform where you can take a beautiful view of the city whereby if you take the trail up to Penang Hill, you only get to see Penang city when you are on top.

Hock Sheng and Jing Min, classmates for last year. It’s so nice to see them again. Really very very long time didn’t meet again. I wonder what happened when everyone goes to work few years later. OMG.

There’s actually two way that can lead you up to Moon Gate. One is through the hiking trail in Penang Municipal Park, another one is in front of Botanical Garden, which leads you straight up to Moon Gate without stopping at Station 3. My friends who were with the kids were on the other route.

It had been some times I didn’t come up here already. The really last time was like half year ago. My god, miss the moment so much. If you come hiking in the afternoon or evening, there’s nice free food like fried bee hoon can eat. =) Cooked by some frequent hikers.

At the same time, my high school friends was bringing a bunch of kids from a camp to go hiking too. They were the helper for the camp and I automatically joined them and helped them out.

Yong Chieh, basically most of them were my classmate during Form 5 last year. I miss my high school life, serious, all the shouting and not doing homework and talking about girls. Ah.

Jin Sheng, always call him Da Ge which means big brother.

We were up there early so we sit down and chit chat again while waiting for the little children to come up. My friend, Jing Min had a pack of food, he left it on the table and came to talk with us, a minute later, it’s gone and it’s seen snatched by a naughty monkey up there. So be careful with you food, keep it hidden else they will come snatching for you. They become notorious when there’s little people at there.

    A
h Geog. Geoffrey who now has a girlfriend already. What’s-her-name-again? Sorry. =(

Wei Huai with one of the girl’s barbie doll. There’s one funny kid who brought a dog up, and in fact it’s a toy dog and he said want to bring the dog up and look around. Haha.

Morning stretching and exercise. =) Good for health. Don’t sit so much in front of the computer or else you will have big ass like me. Haha.

    Yiphing with the barbie now.

Just join the fun with them, chit chat, talk jokes with the little kids and I helped them to take group photographs. It was fun because the kids were so cute, but some very playful. Haha. Most of the kids were banana, so they don’t really speak Mandarin. Ahhhh, I strongly recommend you send your children to learn Mandarin, dear parents. No why, it’s just a must. =)

    Ernie in the middle.

Jia Ying here, my primary school friend.

    Andy, the kapster in school.

Okok, you are funny, a bit. HAHA, and you successfully caught my attention.

    Yong Chieh.

    Zhao Qin.

Big big group photo. Although I am not really an official helper, but I still get to take a group photo with them. Haha. Spot for me.

You are suppose to see Joanne, my primary school mate in the photo but she was busy making a stubborn boy look at the camera, and still failed in the end. Really stubborn. Then you see that Hock Sheng again. =)

Due to time problem, I didn’t join my friend to go down the hill together, instead, I went down with Yiphing and Arron again and we went for brunch. And the afternoon was a sleeping afternoon for me because the midnight of the day was the RM1 karaoke with the guy. Haha.

    Woo. Fun.

  • Hiking to Moon Gate with Friends

Hiking to Moon Gate with Friends

The initial plan was Chien Chern come to my house to fetch me go to Penang Hill Tram Station to fetch Arron, Chen Yuen, Yiphing and Sher Reen to Botanical Garden, then hike up to Penang Hill and eat some ice kacang, then take the tram down and sit Arron’s car back to Botanical Garden for Chien Chern’s car. But FAILED because the tram service was down for repair work. So sad man.

    IMG_4612 by nicholaschan.

While at the tram station, while waiting for Arron them to come, Chien Chern and I got no place to go and simply drove around the area and found a temple. So we went in to take a look and I prayed.

    IMG_4614 by nicholaschan.

The temple was pretty cool and it’s quiet in the morning. I saw monks at there.

    IMG_4617 by nicholaschan.

In the end, all two car drove to Youth Park and hike up to Moon Gate and come back down. It’s still exercise afterall but we were quite late at that time, it’s almost mid-morning already.

Moon Gate is a stop at the hill for resting. The trail up to the place where I always go hiking with my mom. It’s pretty fun and sometime can see monkey at there.

    IMG_4635 by nicholaschan.

I did check how long the trail was before, it’s about 2km and it’s not very tall, around 230m above sea level and took us like half and hour. Wonder how long will it takes for us to climb the Mount. Kinabalu tallest in South East Asia.

    IMG_4640 by nicholaschan.
    Sher Reen, Yiphing.

I have got no food up there and at that kind of time, there’s no water service too, so I drank tap water up there, hopefully it’s clean. =) Feeling a little bit of hungry, Arron gave me a bite of his prepared sandwich. Thank you.

    IMG_4644 by nicholaschan.
    Chien Chern.

Spent like 30 minutes up there, crapping and shouting after other people went down, so at a moment, it’s only us up there. Very not quiet but a bit creepy. But soon, there’s hiker came up again and we turned our voice down. If you go hiking during the evening, there’s nice kopi-o to drink, music and many people up there, quite happenings.

We wanted to go Penang Hill still, but no luck connecting it to there. There’s still a route at the back of Moon Gate, but no sure where it leads to. A little bit scary. Haha.

We then went down under the hot sun. Very surprise and now only I know there’s still people go hiking almost noon. It’s like peopl
e go there at anytime of the day, don’t know night got or not.
