My Open House during Tiger Chinese New Year
Written by Nicholas Chan on March 9, 2010 – 11:02 pm -New Year, New Year, I am still talking about new year because there’s nothing much to talk already, my long holiday is coming to an end. That’s sad. I will be going to National Service on 28th March 2010, so please do miss me and don’t stop visiting my blog. ^^
Chinese New Year is always fun and is the best part of the year. It’s about food, money, gambling, friends, talking, traveling, and holidaying. Only dislike thing is, it’s traffic jam everywhere! Especially my place, near to a shopping mall and the sea. That sucks for me.

Met Chen Yuen with Sher Reen. ^^
To make Chinese New Year even more fun, more happenings, friends came visit to my place. Obviously was to get ang bao from my beloved parents, but nevermind, it’s Chinese New Year, everyone’s happy. Hehe.
Ok, the two photos above were not about open house. It’s before open house where I went to Gurney Plaza for a walk, it’s too bored at home, lazy to go onto the Internet also and met some friends.
The first visit by friend wasn’t really open house, it’s just visit, but I’ll considered it as open house, because my house was open for visit and they came. Thanks all, the first visit was by the Leo Club juniors, shit, should not say junior because it makes me sound so old, they are all my Leo Club friends, the younger one. ^^ Check list, there’s Kenny, Kelvin, Amanda and Corrinne.

Corrinne, gambling queen. Look at the card, no point. LOL.
Actually visits during Chinese New Year do simple thing only, gambling and talking.
Only a little attention paid on what’s showing on the television. It’s always, blackjack, blackjack, 7 point, 8 point. Chinese loves to gamble during CNY. I like winning money. XD
The next visit was on the next day. It’s very last minute where I asked my friend whether want to come over to my place or not. Parents had a real open house, with lots of food, drinks, beer and their friend.

These adults gamble very powerful, it’s tens and hundreds whereas us were like, cents and bucks.
The Chinese style of party. I don’t really know how to organize a party, the main reason is because I don’t really know how a party goes on, dance? food? talk? shout? scream? games? I am not that kind of person who think, but in my mind, I love party, I would like to go to and see how it’s like if there’s a chance. You see like in those American teenager film, their party is like so cool, so happenings.
It was Whitney’s birthday that day. Whitney is the daughter of my mom’s friend. They brought cake to our place, unfortunately, there’s no candle.
Alvin, Ker Ying, Sheue Yen, Wei Chung, Yong Chieh and Zheng Feng came over to my place late at night. Thanks people. Played cards again and won some money on the last round. Pretty fun!

Tiger Chinese New Year’s Eve
Written by Nicholas Chan on February 24, 2010 – 11:49 am -I am back everyone. This is really shit, had been hiatus, had been on holiday for so long and I suddenly feel uncomfortable with typing and writing blog. But I guess I must stop myself being a lazy butt slacking everyday during this of my very own Chinese New Year holiday. Although I am already in holiday right now and before CNY, but CNY’s holiday is more lazy than before.
No idea where to start writing and sharing, so gonna share my Chinese New Year’s Eve which is also the reunion day with family of all Chinese in the world.
Most people have their reunion DINNER, as for me, I have it for both LUNCH and DINNER. Shops as usual were open on that day until 6pm only because it’s still not an official holiday. Though on this year, the eve fell on a Saturday, so it’s nice for the schooling. Yay, I am not schooling at the moment.
People like steamboat, because it’s everyone-sit-down-together and share saliva and it’s reunion. Haha, few years back we still had steamboat but now we don’t. Grandma said it’s troublesome, a lot to prepare and IMO, I don’t really like steamboat a lot. Now people either just go to the restaurant, buffet, or just cook some nice dishes and eat-together.

Watching Opening Ceremony of Winter Olympics Vancouver 2010 and lunch at the same time.
Unfortunately, it’s not everyone on the table. Some were stuck on the jam, some were far away in Australia studying and so, it’s not fully reunited. It’s still good to have many people in the house. For lunch, I go to family of daddy’s side at night would be family of mommy’s side.
Many food and very full. There’s abalone too! Don’t know why during New Year, people cooks abalone. Didn’t stay long at grandma’s place because nothing much to do there. We went elsewhere.
Stay at home also boring, so brother, cousin Wai Leong and I went to Gurney Plaza to walk around and eat ice cream! Ice cream on a hot day was nice. Something’s wrong with the weather, from the eve till now, it’s so hot everyday outside.
There’s still many people in the mall despite it’s an eve, you will be thinking everyone went for reunion meal but not. I believe it’s their last minute shopping! =D I bought a t-shirt on that day too. And everything will be new on the next day, the New Year day.
Still, we were not going home. We went to town for another dessert again, Famous Penang Road Chendul.
It’s just so refreshing and chilling. Although I got a little flu that time, still, this really chill me off. One question, is it that when people is having a flu, he/she can’t take in cold things?
Night time came, and it’s reunion dinner of mommy side’s family! It had been many years that grandma didn’t cook for reunion dinner, have forgotten for how many years already. Every year, we would just book a restaurant which opens on the eve, then eat there. Uncles and aunties all came back from Johor and Sungai Petani, so nice that Penang is the meet-up point and I am there, no traveling far. =D
It’s a few-courses dinner. Forgotten how many course, OOPS, because that the dinner wasn’t that nice. Just simply stuck the food in, I only liked that roasted piglet the most. Meat, I like!
I have think before that New Year must go to the cinema but somehow I didn’t go before, now only I know that movie tickets were all purchased few days before CNY and the cinema is very full during CNY! No chance to watch movie for latecomer like me.
We didn’t want to go home so early, so went to the jazz bar at G Hotel which have an awkward name, G SPOT. There’s live Jazz music playing all night long.
Played with the lights, listened to the Jazz, drank some cocktail, and finally everyone went home. It’s Valentine’s Day the next day man, and also Chinese New Year, but heck I don’t have a Valentine, so chocolate was off and red packet was ON, and still ON! Come give me red packet, it gives you prosper. Hehe.
Gong Hei Fatt Choi. Live Long and Prosper. XD

Farewell for Liang Sun Who Goes To National Service
Written by Nicholas Chan on January 5, 2010 – 12:33 am -Liang Sun, a friend, a classmate of mine has went to the National Service for 3 months, he departed today to the camp at Sungai Bakap in Bukit Mertajam. He will be gone for 3 months and they had farewell dinner for him at Queensbay the night before.
To tell you guys a secret, I have been chosen for National Service too, but then I am not allocated in the first batch and I don’t know is there will be any circumstances preventing me to go for the National Service or not. I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know.
I had my dinner before I went to Queensbay Mall because I know all the restaurant in Queensbay Malll are not budget restaurant and I am on tight budget recently because of jobless and less allowance and no schooling.
So basically it’s just everyone come out together, they eat, we talk and I take photos. =) Nothing much, just to say bye bye. I can’t imagine if I leave my friends and family, it will be very very very the sad I guess.
National Service need to have a bald head, so Liang Sun was prepared for it. Some people prefer to have their hair cut at the camp.
See you Liang Sun in 3 months time, perhaps during homecoming when Chinese New Year!
Ok, good night for now.

Red Box Karaoke Right After Last Paper of SPM 2009
Written by Nicholas Chan on January 4, 2010 – 11:12 pm -Yes yes, it’s again, we went to Red Box karaoke after the last paper of SPM examination of 2009. That’s what I usually do after finishing a school examination. This is a very standard stuff and why Red Box? Because in Penang, there’s only Red Box karaoke and I just get to know that Neway Karaoke will be opening soon at Queensbay Mall soon.
Jing Min playing with the Red Box people.
Our Chinese paper finished at 12.45pm that day, I went home to bath and got ready, then to Red Box with everyone. We were not the first SPM finisher, because fifth former who didn’t take Chinese paper had finished their SPM earlier.
Chai Wei, Vivian, Shan and Sheue Yen.
We have got the biggest room in Red Box which can have up to 20-25 people in the room and we have only got like 13 people.
Lek Jian, Me, Theresa, Hui Mei, Liang Sun.
It’s not only us that went to Red Box, many people went there too on that day and I believe most of them are same like me, just finished their SPM, taking a break.
Priscilla.
It’s not too many people in the room, it’s too many people came to Red Box on that day, people came in and our, “hi and bye”, very hard to communicate and interact with everyone.
Lek Jian, Valen, Jia Wei, Yi Jun and me.
Most important are still did I sing or not? Yes I did and enjoyed the singing, a lot. The Penang’s Plurkers had a room there too, I went there to say hi, sang a few songs and went back to my place. Hard to be at multiplace. I wish I can divide my body. Haha.
Simon, Arron with the his crazy pose and Edmund.
Zez and Vivian.
Shan Shan.
Chai Wei and Ammerlynn.
Janice.
Wei Chung and Sheue Yen.
Karaoke finished, I went home. Marked the end of SPM, the end of Form 5 life. That’s fast.

Temple Visits Before SPM Examination
Written by Nicholas Chan on November 10, 2009 – 12:20 am -Now I can’t deny that we, a bunch of high school students are not superstitious. No offence to other religions, we are buddhist and we went to as many as 7 temples lately for prayers and blessing for the coming big, massive SPM exam which is O Level equivalent.
Organized by I don’t know who, but it’s all my classmate and skipped school together on a Wednesday and went for the temples trip around Penang. Since I was free and it’s something must-do to me, so I went to join them. There’s like, 11 of us.
First stop was Mahindarama Temple or more likely to known as Guleng Hood. It’s a famous place and everyone loves going there before exam for blessing. I had actually went there the week before this and so this was my second visit for this year. There’s no restriction on how many time you can pray.
They actually had a blessing ceremony for SPM students last Sunday but I find no reason why want to join the crowds and wake up early. I prefer going on some other time where there’s little people.
Go to Guleng Hood must bring a couple of milk and your exam time table. That’s the standard procedure, then look for the sifu monk in the house for blessing.
Spent like an hour at Guleng Hood and we were off to another place and that is the Penang Buddhist Association. This place is quite happenings during Wesak Day. It became so quiet on normal days.
Don’t want to talk so much about what happened there. Basically, it’s just prayers for good health, good result and good everything.
Next was the Siamese temple, Wat Buppharam on Perak Road. Tried the 50cents electronic fortune teller, but it didn’t work for me. Too bad. We actually visited another one, Malaysia Buddhist Association on Burma Rd, it’s just a very short visit.
Then off to Burma Lane (Lorong Burma) to visit the two temple. A Siamese temple (Wat Chaiyamangkalaram) and a Dhammikarama Burmese temple. Living in Penang for 17 years, this was my first time and we were just like tourist at there. Everyday past by the place, thinking that it’s just another temple and small, but everything I thought weren’t true.
The compound, the garden, the statue are big. Inside is very pretty and clean. It just doesn’t feel “Penang” to me, it’s more like being in Thailand.
There’s a rotating thing inside the Burmese temple where you can aim and throw coins into it. Each different bowl representing different thing which you pray/wish for, etc. Health, Prosperity, Education, Marriage, Good Lucks.

The Siamese Temple lies the reclining Buddha.
Last week was the Loy Krathong, a Thai festival where people release boat with candles and written wishes into the sea. We bought a boat and wrote our wishes on it and they were release into the sea at Gurney Drive.
After so many temples, finally we had came to our last stop. The Penang’s Kuan Yin Temple at Pitt Street. It’s not first or 15th of the Lunar calendar, so it’s not that crowded. Usually it’s full of devotees during those days.
Parents bring their children who are sitting for exam here too. Mom did bring me here 2 years ago when I was sitting for PMR and now, it’s friend who brought me there instead of my mom. To pray for good studies and education, we looked for the Confucious and Wen Chang Gong. =)
So, after that many prayers and temple visit, doesn’t mean that we need not to study already, it’s just a kind of believing. Good luck everyone!
