  • Char Koay Teow For Breakfast At Perak Road Market

Char Koay Teow For Breakfast At Perak Road Market

Char Koay Teow For Breakfast At Perak Road Market

Char Koay Teow For Breakfast At Perak Road Market – After eating the famous Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee at Perak Road (Jalan Perak Pasar) Market, I realised there’s still space in the stomach, not feeling very full, and so I ordered a plate of Char Koay Teow to share with my friends.

It does looks pretty with a 3 shrimps in it, nicely fried with chilli sauce, and a few slices of Chinese sausage as well as beansprout. The experience with it was not the best, it’s not dry enough in my opinion as the “wok hei” 锅气, the heat / power of the frying wok was not strong enough.

After all, it does fill up my stomach well, not a bad char koay teow, just a SO-SO typical char koay teow to me, I want something drier, hotter, a little bit more spicy, more beansprout and it will be perfect.

Desserts At Snowman Tang Bo Fu, Pulau Tikus – When you think of stressed, try reverse the alphabet and you will get D-E-S-S-E-R-T-S, yes, it’s desserts! Everyone does has a sweet tooth which has a strong interest towards desserts and sweet thing. It basically just put a smile on someone’s face.

Snowman Tang Bo Fu is a desserts house that serve Hong Kong desserts and was originally from Raja Uda, Butterworth. Now, they have expanded their outlet to Penang Island, located on the busy neighbourhood of Rat Island – Pulau Tikus.

    #2

I went there on a fine afternoon with my brother and his friend to enjoy some icy cold desserts as a getaway from the hot and humid weather of Penang. The interior of the place is quite similar with the on in Raja Uda, it’s smaller, yet still able to house a mini band stage and also a sofa for better chill out experience.

    #3. Wifi is available too!

Tang Bo Fu (mandarin) or Tong Pak Fu (cantonese) was a Chinese scholar, painter, calligrapher and poet of the Ming Dynasty, who basically is a famous Chinese from the ancient time. Now the name is used as the restaurant name which the word Tang, is changed into another Chinese word which means sweet.

    #4.

I ordered myself one of the top 10, icy Honeydew Sago (RM5.80). The blended ice does really contain the taste of the honeydew and it’s accompany by healthy and cold honeydew fruit cutlet as well as the sago filling. It’s a simple desserts, yet, it’s sweetened the mouth and mind.

    #5.

Next up is a Soya Milk With Sesame Paste Sea Coconut (RM7.80). A mixture of the sesame paste into the blended ice and soya milk turns a special combination into something delightful. The presence of sea coconut keeps the mouth busy with crunching the healthy fruit.

    #6.

This is Mango Toufa with New Zealand Natural Ice Cream plus Mango cutlet (RM12.80). The toufa is very smooth and it taste like pudding but it’s more fragile then pudding. It break and explode once you place in the mouth. Somehow, the greentea ice cream felt weird in the desserts bowl.

    #8.

We also ordered a finger food to accompany our desserts afternoon. The fried wantan was mouth watering and the skin was also very crunchy. The meat filling tasted a bit salty though.

Overall, the pricing at Tang Bo Fu is rather above average Penang’s desserts price. The desserts are nice, just doesn’t really satisfied with the pricing. Kuala Lumpur’s KTZ has a better pricing food and more choices.

  • 猪肠粥 Pork Intestine Porridge At Lebuh Cintra

猪肠粥 Pork Intestine Porridge At Lebuh Cintra

猪肠粥 Pork Intestine Porridge At Lebuh Cintra – Are you fan of Pork Intestine Porridge? I am not. Haha, but I do eat it sometimes, when I feel bored about the food I have been eating. Well, my recent Pork Intestine Porridge was at a old-school coffee shop located in George Town, on Lebuh Cintra. This is quite well-known to the older generation of the Chinese community in Penang as it’d been there for several decades. The dish is prepared on a classic cart/stall.

A look into the interior brings you back to the olden days of Penang where people sip Chinese coffee and read newspaper in here. It brings out a sense of old school with the usage of kopitiam-style furniture. In the day, the Pork Intestine Porridge stall operates, but at night, another porridge stall takes over the place, it sells chicken and fish porridge at night.

A bowl of Pork Intestine Porridge cost RM4.50 for a regular bowl size and RM5 for large bowl size. The price is reasonable given that the bowl of porridge contain many delicious pork delicacies in it. It tasted salty, somehow OK-good in my opinion because I am not a Pork Intestine-Person. If you ask me will I visit it again, I would say, yes I will. =D

  • Weld Quay Famous Penang Asam Laksa And Ai Yu Bing Dessert

Weld Quay Famous Penang Asam Laksa And Ai Yu Bing Dessert

Weld Quay Famous Penang Asam Laksa And Ai Yu Bing DessertLaksa lover are lucky today because I just found out a new delicious yummy Penang Assam Laksa at Weld Quay. Perhaps some of you may knows about it already but nevermind, just sharing it with everyone because I am a fan of Assam Laksa. One question, how do you spell assam laksa actually? Assam or Asam? There’s no standardized one. Haha.

    P1040060

On the corner of the junction of Gat Lebuh Acheh (Acheen Street Ghaut) and Weld Quay and under a tree, this is where the stalls of the yummy assam laksa and also ai yu bing (a kind of jelly) dessert locate at. Some times, there’s also a curry mee stall but it wasn’t open during my visit.

Only RM3.00 per bowl and you get a nice bowl of asam laksa, not spicy, not very sweet like others, enough of sour-ish taste and it’s nice to me. Although taste different with the famous Farlim Shell Station laksa, I still finish the soup until it’s dry. Fish and vegetable were enough and it’s a good food for afternoon tea or eat-for-fun. Another thing is the aunty who is selling the laksa is kinda friendly too.

    P1040059

There’s also a little dessert stalls serving the laksa customer at there, which sells local desserts like chendol, red bean soup, ai yu bing and grass jelly.

I ordered a bowl of ai yu bing, it’s a kind of jelly, different from grass jelly, tasted a little bit sour-ish with lime in it. It’s a good thirst quencher during a hot day.

Remember to spot for a tree as the stalls are under the tree. It’s a good location as there’s a tree providing shade so it wouldn’t feel very hot. The stalls open from late morning till mid-afternoon. Lunch and afternoon tea will be nice. =)

  • Teochew Porridge And Ah Lai Hokkien Prawn Mee At Cecil Street Market

Teochew Porridge And Ah Lai Hokkien Prawn Mee At Cecil Street Market

Teochew Porridge And Ah Lai Hokkien Prawn Mee At Cecil Street Market – I’ve wrote about my weekend at Cecil Street Market And Food Stalls, now I want to share about what I’ve eaten at there two days ago. As you know, Cecil Street Food Stall is one of my favourite eat out place in Penang when I am craving for local yummy Penang food as you can find almost everything here.

Teochew Porridge And Ah Lai Hokkien Prawn Mee At Cecil Street Market

Last Saturday, I went there for lunch and it were Teochew porridge with dishes and a bowl of hokkien prawn noodle. Teochew Porridge is actually plain white porridge with a some little Chinese dishes. The name of Teochew Porridge is called is because Teochew-people in China cooks and eats plain white Teochew style porridge in this way (Cantonese style porridge is usually more smooth and concentrated)

Teochew Porridge And Ah Lai Hokkien Prawn Mee At Cecil Street Market

There’s only two of us that noon, mom and me and we ordered four little dish which consists of siu yok (sio bak / roasted pork), long bean, fried eggs and fried dace with black bean. 4 simple dishes but they were just awesomely pleasing and it costs not more than RM10 at only RM8.60 for all.

    Untitled

The great part is eating with the plain white waterish Teochew rice porridge which is a healthy. The combination of the simple dishes with the porridge makes up the Teochew Porridge which is just great for a lunch.

Because I was on a holiday back in Penang and was craving for Penang food, I couldn’t get myself not ordering a Penang food for lunch. Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee was on my mind at that time. There’s actually 3 stalls in the market, I’ve tried one before which was just OKAY, there’s another one was not open at that day and I went to try the one which is called Ah Lai’s Hokkien Prawn Mee, hidden deep in the sea of food stalls.

Teochew Porridge And Ah Lai Hokkien Prawn Mee At Cecil Street Market

The stalls owner was very kind to show me the prawn shells which are used to make the yummy prawn mee soup. It’s not recommended to eat frequently due to high cholesterol from the prawn shells, but sometimes it’s really hard to resists the deliciousness.

Teochew Porridge And Ah Lai Hokkien Prawn Mee At Cecil Street Market

My bowl of hokkien prawn mee was the maggi mee version. The soup tasted sweet and has a strong sense of prawn taste in it, probably because of the prawn shells used to cook the soup. The mixes of boiled egg, pork meats and shallots perfected the dish. Best of all, it’s only RM2.50! Cheap and tasty, I will come back for this again.

Make a visit to the market and you will be amaze by the variety of food.

To simplify, it’s another religious and happenings festival in Malaysia for the believer of Nine Emperor Gods. I missed the festival last year but I think I will not be missing it again this year as I would like to see how’s the festival is at here in Kuala Lumpur. In Penang, it is a very happenings night on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month where thousands will gather to send the gods in the procession. I have been to the procession in Penang in 2008 and 2009.

Devotees praying for blessing on the Nine Emperor Gods Festival.

In Kuala Lumpur, the procession is located in Ampang and I am planning to visit the temple. In order to visit the procession, I have to eat vegetarian on the day itself.

A plate of vegetarian bee hoon costs RM1.50.

In Penang, you will see lots of yellow flags hanging around which is actually telling you that the festival is going on and don’t be surprise to see many temporary set up stalls by the roadside selling vegetarian food. It’s pretty interesting to eat the vegetarian food, they are cheap in price, and some are quite delicious.

  • Magazine Road Famous Tang Yuan 头条路甜汤圆

Magazine Road Famous Tang Yuan – Magazine Road also known as Tao Tiao Lor (头条路) or literally means First Road in Penang Hokkien has a famous Tang Yuan Chinese Dessert stall that have operated for quite many years. It’d been featured on the newspaper and TV before.

Located in front of Penang’s famous landmark, KOMTAR tower and 1st Avenue Shopping Centre, you can find people hanging there at late night just to eat a couple of Chinese glutinous rice ball in a sweet and spicy ginger soup. The soup is actually a simple mixture of brown sugar, ginger and pandan leaves. Some who doesn’t like ginger can opt for normal brown sugar soup. The fragrance of the ginger is very strong that I can smell it from far.

It’s the only stall that I know up to date that operate till late night. So if you are craving for a little bit of Chinese dessert, need something to bite, you can visit this stall.

I do visit the stall some times when the night is still young that I feel like eating at late night. They only two kinds of filling in the tang yuan, one which is peanut and another is sesame. I like both of them, but if were to choose one, I like the sesame’s more. Tangyuan originally feels chewy and tasteless in mouth, the tangyuan at this stall wouldn’t be hard to chew and the first bite gets you into the fillings if you have sharp teeth which flavours your mouth with the sweet fillings. A drink of the sweet and spicy ginger soup makes the night even more refreshing.

Accompany with the little filling-less tangyuan, it’s makes the night a wonderful night.

  • Penang Asam Laksa And Hokkien Prawn Mee at O&S Kopitiam, Seapark

I am still always in search for the best, “closest-to-Penang’s-taste” hokkien prawn mee and asam laksa but still not finding any, I remembered the prawn mee at SS15’s Asia Cafe was nice but still not the closest yet. I always Google to find for one and recently I found the one in Seapark, many people talked about it and so I went to check it out.

The kopitiam name is called O&S Restaurant, located in Seapark near the Esso petrol station. There’s actually another asam laksa and hokkien prawn mee stall in Seapark.

I ordered the hokkien prawn mee first as my lunch. It looks awesome, there’s egg, there’s beansprout, there’s mini prawn. However what I don’t like is the chilli paste. It’s not spicy at all and doesn’t add spiciness into the soup. It’s like those Cantonese kind of not-spicy prawn sambal. If it’s more spicy then the hokkien mee will be good, it’s a little bit too sweet in my opinion. So this is not “close-to-Penang”.

Then I ordered the asam laksa too, the same stall that sells curry laksa which we normally call it curry mee in Penang. I wonder why they like to sell curry laksa and asam laksa in the same stall. It takes like 15 minutes for the order to arrive and I was thinking it will be great. It came and I saw nice big fish, however it’s a little bit too sourish.

So in my opinion, I think the other stall in Seapark has a better one that this place. What do you think? And if to choose which food is better here, I go for hokkien prawn mee. =)

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicholas-chan/6166755990/in/photostream/

Dinner At Jogoya Japanese Buffet, Starhill – Jogoya Japanese Buffet restaurant is as the name stated, a Japanese buffet centric restaurant based in the premium shopping mall, Starhill Gallery in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. Besides this outet at Starhill, there’s another one outlet in Taipei’s tallest building – Taipei 101.

I have been wanting to go try out this place and finally I had a chance to visit and dine out at there. The price is RM88++ per person which is more likely an international buffet rather than a standalone Japanese food buffet. Japanese food is of course the main food that you can find in there, but there’s still other choice like Chinese food, Thai food and Western Food.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicholas-chan/6166755990/in/photostream/

First thing first was of course getting must stomach half filled with delicious Japanese sashimi and fresh raw oyster which I don’t really eat in normal days. They are my all-time favourite. After trying out the Japanese section with sushi, sashimi, teppanyaki, Japanese steamboat and other Japanese food, only then I move on to try some other Asian dishes like Chinese food, Thai food. And lastly, went back to a little bit of Japanese food.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicholas-chan/6166755990/in/photostream/

The only section that I didn’t try out was Western corner which I was not really interested in it.

RM88++ is indeed worthwhile but somehow, I bet you couldn’t try all the dishes in there with over 200 dishes to choose from.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicholas-chan/6166755990/in/photostream/

Well, in taste wise, it may not be the super delicious, but somehow reach the standard of good-to-eat. Eating buffet is not really a comfortable thing to me because stomach get full and bloated after eat, shouting for how full it is after that. Somehow, it’s a good experience for me.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicholas-chan/6166755990/in/photostream/

It’s a PORK FREE restaurant means it’s a halal restaurant, however there’s alcohol like red and white wine. There’s some section which you drop a small clip with your table number for the food you want and they will cook it and send to your table.

Besides, there’s various of desserts for you to choose from with many variety of pudding, cake, Haagen Dazs and New Zealand Natural Ice Cream, ice kacang and more. They do have promotion from time to time. Sometimes is buy-1-get-1-free for lunch section, now they have a promotion of 2nd customer get 50% off, but then it’s only available for lunch.

Check out the website for more and now it’s time to enjoy the photos that I have taken after my meal. =D

  • Nice Durian Pancake By Sumptuous Desserts

It’s autumn, it’s September already and the super awesome durian seaon has finally over. However, it doesn’t mean that you cannot eat durian right now, there’s still durian out there, it’s just that not many and the price is pretty expensive now, and you need to go around to find, it’s not as easy to find during durian season like there are stalls everywhere.

Nice Durian Pancake By Sumptuous Desserts

Recently, I came across with something call the durian pancake. I have heard about durian cake before but this is my first time encounter with durian pancake. I was invited by the co-founder of Sumptuous Desserts to try out their durian pancake at Sunway Pyramid. It’s located right behind the McDonald’s ice cream kiosk and I wonder why I didn’t notice about it every time I passed by last time.

Let’s check out the menu first and see the price and what interested you. =)

As you can see, they have quite a variety of pancake, mainly durian and cempedak, there’s also mango too, as well as special made cream puff which had been localized.

    Untitled

So, durian pancake is basically is a thin layer, very thin layer of pancake skin, wrapping the delicious yummy real durian cream with a bit of white cream. Sounds interesting right? But how it taste like and how is the texture and experience?

I want to share with you guys a very cool thing is that the texture, the feeling, the experience is just almost the same, 95% same like eating the real king of fruit – durian, just without the big seed. It tasted the same, with the sweet, strong odor yellow durian cream inside, a little bit mixture of white cream makes the durian pancake a fruitful experience for durian lover like me.

The durian pancake is best to serve right out of the fridge when it’s icy cold because it makes eating durian fun and chilling in a hot and tropical country of Malaysia.

A little cool information is that the durian cream is extrated from high quality D24 durian. In term of the content level, the pancake consist of 34g of real durian cream and 28g of white cream. Sounds yum yum right?

I did try cempadak pancake too, the cempadak taste was there but somehow I am more into the durian pancake.

    Have you tried before?
