    Chatime Bubble Tea & 102 Chinese Cuisine At Bellisa Row – Chatime is now one of the famous Taiwanese bubble tea brand in Penang and drinking out at Chatime’s is now a trend. More and more people is hanging out at Chatime instead of Starbucks, Coffee Bean.

    In Penang, there’s a new Chatime just open recently at Bellisa Row, Pulau Tikus which now Penang has a total of 4 Chatime outlets – Gurney Plaza, Queensbay Mall, 1st Avenue as well as Bellisa Row.

    Located on Bellisa Row shoplots, the Chatime outlet was actually a Chinese restaurant – Dragon 9ine Restaurant which has closed down and change to offer Chatime bubble tea and 102 Taiwanese Cuisine.

    It might be one of the coolest Chatime outlet in Penang as you can not only drink Chatime bubble tea beverage, but you can eat Taiwanese cuisine at the same time. The outlet is divided into two F&B outlet, but then they are link together in between, but different unit.  One more thing, free wifi is available too!

    The 102 Restaurant offers Chinese food as well as Taiwanese cuisine in their menu, snacks and finger food. It’s a good combination and add-on for Chatime bubble tea.

    I didn’t really had my dinner meal there, instead I ordered the Taiwanese sausage as a snack to eat and at the same time enjoy Chatime bubble tea.

    BlackBall Taiwanese Desserts At Pulau Tikus, Penang

    BlackBall Taiwanese Desserts At Pulau Tikus, Penang – Taiwanese desserts and bubble tea have became a trend in Malaysia with the rise of bubble tea shop like Chatime, Gongcha and desserts shop like Snowflakes in Kuala Lumpur. Another franchise brand of Taiwanese desserts is here and that’s Blackball Taiwanese Desserts which located on Jalan Burma of Pulau Tikus.

    BlackBall origins from Taiwan and there’s a few outlets in the Klang Valley (SS15, Damansara Uptown, Sri Petaling, & Johor Bahru), this one is the first outlet in Penang and it began to introduce Taiwanese desserts to Penangite. A little bit information about Taiwanese desserts is that they are bowl of grass jelly with topping like taro ball, red bean, pearls, coconut jelly and more. Besides serving Taiwanese desserts at BlackBall, you can also find my favourite beverage – bubble tea at there too.

    It’s opened about a month ago at Pulau Tikus. Parking is a little bit difficult as the car park area in front of the shop can only allow 4 cars to be parked at the same time. Hmm. Luckily there’s a place for us to park our vehicle. I went there after lunch with my brother and his girlfriend.

    Looking at the menu, it offers Taiwanese desserts almost the same like Snowflakes in Klang Valley, however with additional of different bubble teas in their menu. Since it’s our first time visiting the cafe, we ordered two BlackBall Signatures, hot and cold.

    They gave us the UFO thingy which will beep and vibrate once our order is ready. Then we went to collect our order at the counter.

    A bowl of these cost RM6.50. What’s different with hot and cold is hot is more liquid/water-ish, where cold includes a layer of blended ice in it. The BlackBall signature includes healthy grass jelly, taro ball, taro Q, pearl and red bean. Both of this come with a small cup of milk which adds more flavour into it.

    Well, the texture of the grass jelly and jelly are pretty good especially the grass jelly where it’s very soft and splash upon entering the mouth. The taro ball is chewy enough. However, the whole thing is not tasteful enough where the taste is pretty light, not enough taste of grass jelly, not sweet enough.

    What do you think? I think it’s acceptable for Taiwanese desserts, but I want it to be sweeter. =D

    Famous Kimberley Street Douhua (Soybean Pudding) – The night falls and the heart of George Town calms down a bit where working people went back home after a long day of work. Another life of the city wakes up at night – the hawker stalls. Kimberley Street, also known as Shantou Jie (mandarin), Shantou Kai (cantonese), Swatao keh (hokkien) came alive at night where hawker stalls park along the road, offering delicious Penang’s Char Koay Teow and more.

    There is one lorry that has been there for many years and that’s the Kimberley Street Soya Bean & Douhua (Soybean Pudding). It sells soya bean milk, soybean pudding (douhua), soybean jelly, grass jelly drinks, as well as fruit yogurt.

    Besides locating on Kimberley Street, the stall has another branch at the famous Gurney Drive Hawker’s area. A bowl of douhua/toufufa/doufuhua cost about RM2.50 and it serves your after-meal desserts well. The soft and smooth pudding with taste of bean and the mixture of black sugar syrup makes it pleasant to it. It splashes and break upon entering the mouth, sliding down smoothly into the throat. However, it doesn’t feel as smooth as the douhua that I had in Hong Kong.

    Brother is a douhua fans, but not me, I just eat it for fun, some times. How about you?

    Weld Quay Famous Penang Asam Laksa And Ai Yu Bing DessertLaksa lover are lucky today because I just found out a new delicious yummy Penang Assam Laksa at Weld Quay. Perhaps some of you may knows about it already but nevermind, just sharing it with everyone because I am a fan of Assam Laksa. One question, how do you spell assam laksa actually? Assam or Asam? There’s no standardized one. Haha.

    On the corner of the junction of Gat Lebuh Acheh (Acheen Street Ghaut) and Weld Quay and under a tree, this is where the stalls of the yummy assam laksa and also ai yu bing (a kind of jelly) dessert locate at. Some times, there’s also a curry mee stall but it wasn’t open during my visit.

    Only RM3.00 per bowl and you get a nice bowl of asam laksa, not spicy, not very sweet like others, enough of sour-ish taste and it’s nice to me. Although taste different with the famous Farlim Shell Station laksa, I still finish the soup until it’s dry. Fish and vegetable were enough and it’s a good food for afternoon tea or eat-for-fun. Another thing is the aunty who is selling the laksa is kinda friendly too.

    There’s also a little dessert stalls serving the laksa customer at there, which sells local desserts like chendol, red bean soup, ai yu bing and grass jelly.

    I ordered a bowl of ai yu bing, it’s a kind of jelly, different from grass jelly, tasted a little bit sour-ish with lime in it. It’s a good thirst quencher during a hot day.

    Remember to spot for a tree as the stalls are under the tree. It’s a good location as there’s a tree providing shade so it wouldn’t feel very hot. The stalls open from late morning till mid-afternoon. Lunch and afternoon tea will be nice. =)

    Little Cottage Cafe is quite well-known among Penangite with two outlets, one on Jalan Burma, and another one in Waterfall Hotel, Jalan Utama. It’s my first time visiting the Little Cottage Cafe on Jalan Burma and I went there to have lunch with my girlfriend. I was busy taking video of the place and I have forgotten to take photos of the interiors, so I will repost a video version. =D

    The interiors is very cozy and warming feel with nice cottage style dining and give you an experience that you are like being in a small county, it’s so not in Penang.

    They have standard set meal lunch which starts from RM9.90 and we both ordered the RM15.90 set. It started with a mushroom soup. The mushroom taste was strong but then one thing I wasn’t that favour about it is that it’s a little bit too waterish. If it’s creamier than it’s great.

    Bread bun and butter is also one of the appetizer that comes with the soup. Love the warm bun with butter in it.

    Here comes the main course which is the Black Pepper Chicken. Well, the black pepper sauce was there and it’s a grilled chicken instead of deep fried chicken. The presentation was good and serves with little vegetable salad and mash potato. The mash potato to me was OK-good and the chick was tender enough. As for the sauce wise, the taste was there, not too over, not too less, just nice. Overall, I couldn’t comment this is the best, but it’s not bad. Somehow, I like the Little Cottage Chicken Chop more which comes next.

    The Little Cottage Chicken Chop is deep fried chicken chop poured with a kind of sweet and BBQ sauce which makes it tasted good. The chicken was crispy and I like the crunchyness when biting on it. Serve with a little bit of onion and I think this is kinda special and tasted nice when eat with the chicken and sauce. As I said, I like this more than the black pepper chicken, this is good. =)

    The last course was the coffee / tea but desserts comes before it. Having a sweet tooth is so nice that I love desserts so much and this little desserts is actually a pudding of milk and pandan which is kinda special with a sense of local style, some how it’s just too small.

    Well, Little Cottage is a nice place to have your meal given with its nice and cozy interiors.

    Magazine Road Famous Tang Yuan – Magazine Road also known as Tao Tiao Lor (头条路) or literally means First Road in Penang Hokkien has a famous Tang Yuan Chinese Dessert stall that have operated for quite many years. It’d been featured on the newspaper and TV before.

    Located in front of Penang’s famous landmark, KOMTAR tower and 1st Avenue Shopping Centre, you can find people hanging there at late night just to eat a couple of Chinese glutinous rice ball in a sweet and spicy ginger soup. The soup is actually a simple mixture of brown sugar, ginger and pandan leaves. Some who doesn’t like ginger can opt for normal brown sugar soup. The fragrance of the ginger is very strong that I can smell it from far.

    It’s the only stall that I know up to date that operate till late night. So if you are craving for a little bit of Chinese dessert, need something to bite, you can visit this stall.

    I do visit the stall some times when the night is still young that I feel like eating at late night. They only two kinds of filling in the tang yuan, one which is peanut and another is sesame. I like both of them, but if were to choose one, I like the sesame’s more. Tangyuan originally feels chewy and tasteless in mouth, the tangyuan at this stall wouldn’t be hard to chew and the first bite gets you into the fillings if you have sharp teeth which flavours your mouth with the sweet fillings. A drink of the sweet and spicy ginger soup makes the night even more refreshing.

    Accompany with the little filling-less tangyuan, it’s makes the night a wonderful night.

    Nice Asam Laksa At Alisan Near Taman Bahagia LRT

    CNN has rated Penang’s Asam Laksa is the world number 7 most delicious food [source] and it’s the pride of Penang and Malaysia. I was surprised and excited with the rating, it’s not just top 100, or top 50, it’s top 10! The smelly and weird taste of the sourish soup and prawn paste makes it the delicious dang for you to enjoy.

    No doubt, it is too my most favourite Penang food of all time as I have grown up alongside with this number 7 title. I am a super asam laksa fans especially for it sourish sweet soup and the thick white noodle, mixed with a bunch ingredient like onion, shredded fish, pineapple slice, cucumber, lettuce, common mint and ginger buds which makes it a perfect dish that could be eaten at anytime of the day. The mouthwatering food makes my hometown, Penang stands out to the world.

    Ever since I come to KL to study, I have been missing the asam laksa quite a lot and there’s actually not really much that can be compare to the authentic one in Penang. Many tried to imitate, but many failed. However, I have a great surprised last night where I had asam laksa for dinner, introduced my KY.

    This asam laksa is located to what the local known as – Alisan, or to be general is somewhere near Taman Bahagia LRT Station. With the help of GPS, we successfully arrived at the place, which is an open air food stalls by road, behind a row of shoplots.

    I felt amaze when I saw a queue of people lining up for the food served at the asam laksa stall. It’s a self-service stall. What’s different is that it’s stated Kedah Asam Laksa, instead of what you normally see – Penang Asam Laksa. Nevertheless, Kedah is just next to Penang and the fragrance of the laksa soup circulate to my nose buds. “Ohh, it must be good”, I told myself. =)

    The queue took about 15 minutes. Despite the queue, my friend, Arron and I waited anxiously for our turn. They do not offers just asam laksa, but a variety of dishes like Mee Jawa, Teochew Mee Teow, Chai Koay (vegetable cake), and few others more, and too beverage. Even though there’s a variety of food to choose, our main pick was still the asam laksa, but we ordered a Mee Jawa and two pieces of Chai Koay to try out too.

    You will be amazed with the serving as it’s served in a plate instead of a bowl but you have nothing to worry. Malay do serve asam laksa in this way too, it’s just that the soup is lesser than a normal bowl of asam laksa. The white noodle is cut into shorter strip to ease eating on a plate and spoon.

    First thing first was trying the soup and with much anticipation, it didn’t failed my taste buds. The sourish and sweetness exploded in my mouth and wash through my throat. “Ahh, this is good”

    Shredded fish, cucumber, onion, white noodle, prawn paste and ginger buds were just serving well along with the yummy asam laksa soup. No doubt it’s recommended by the famous food blogger. Price is RM4.50 per plate. Forget about the place of this laksa’s origin, Kedah or Penang, it’s now the best asam laksa, in Klang Valley. I said the best, as I couldn’t find any better, yet.

    Mee Jawa a.k.a. Mee Rebus is actually an Indonesian noodle, yet this is rather famous among the Chinese community. With much curiousity, we ordered a plate to give our taste buds a try. Unfortunately, there’s no explosion in my mouth and mind. Not really a thing that will make me to order it again. Price is RM4.50.

    At only RM0.70 a piece, we ordered two pieces of Teochew Chai Koay to try. With a dipped in the special made chilli sauce, it actually made my day even better. The crunchy vegetable and the skin makes it good.

    Lastly, my dinner ended with a bowl of ice kacang / ABC (RM2.80) which I like the most is the price firstly and the tower of shredded ice hiding a bunch of yummy ingredient e.g. red beans, grass jelly, jelly bubble and sweet red syrup. It’s indeed a good one provided a good price.

    Well, this has made it into my favourite stall in Klang Valley and will definitely visit it for more asam laksa crave.

    I am a selfish person and I don’t really like to spend money to buy a coffee and enjoy the hotspot internet at a nicely cafe. But my mindset changed lately when I spent my afternoon at the Muntri Mews Cafe on Wednesday with a little bowl of Chinese desserts and using the free hotspot Internet.

    It’s fun to spend time at home when there’s air con and no need to spend any money but I feel that after some times, we will started to slack and rot at home, then life gets boring and dull. It’s actually pretty good that you bring your computer out and spend your usual online activity, online business out there at a nice and cozy cafe, with some light meal for bites.

    I was thinking of going to Jing Si Books & Cafe but I couldn’t find any parking around the busy financial district area of Penang. Then I Googled and found about MoonTree 47 but it was closed and I ended up at a cafe of a flashpacker hotel, Muntre Mews. Quite a cozy place for some hideout. Still in search for some nice heritage cafes with nice coffee to chill out during the afternoon of my holidays. Any recommendation?

    By the way, I ordered myself a bowl of Cheng Th’ng (RM6.00+), which in fact is similar to the local’s Si Koe Th’ng and I have no idea why they named it that way. A bowl of desserts and Internet was just perfect for an afternoon chill. The Cheng Th’ng consist of longan (dragon eyes), coconut jelly and little small sea coconut bath in a sweet desserts soup and topped with a few cubes of ice. It might not worth the price as you can get similar thing with more ingredient at a roadside store, but given a nice environment and music, it’s a good eat and there’s no bad about it.

    Strawberry Cheese Cake At Delicious Cafe – The opening of Delicious Cafe (and restaurant) at Straits Quay, Penang have been creating a trend for the young and old to talk about it and dine out at that place. The reason is probably the variety of food, desserts and of course a nice and cozy pink-purplish interiors.

    Delicious Cafe origins from 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Damansara Utama, Klang Valley and the opening in Straits Quay is the first outlet in Penang and outside Klang Valley. I have not really dine out at there, just have been hearing many friends talk about the place, despite it’s a mid-end pricing restaurant.

    On one night, I visited the place to eat some desert. It was crowded with people at about 9.30pm and it’s a little bit noisy. I didn’t want to sit outdoor as it was hot and humid. No choice that I have to bare the noisyness and eat my dessert.

    The unfortunate event was my girlfriend ordered the Classic Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream at the counter but the waitress told us it’s not available after 5 minutes because it’s all been booked. That’s fine, and we changed to Strawberry Cheese Cake (RM15), and we waited 10 minutes for that. The cake was not that awesome when compare to Secret Recipe, some like it, but it’s not being friendly with my sweet tooth. It looks very pretty though.

    We spent some times chatting and surfing the net with the free wifi then we went back. While going out of the door, we took a glance at the desserts cake counter, and shockingly found out that there’s still so many Classic Chocolate Cake. Damn. The waitress told us that they refilled it, they didn’t tell us that they would refill the thing at first this made me have a first bad impression about the service.

    What do you think? I might give a second visit to see how it goes. =)

    Who doesn’t love desserts and sweets? Dessert is the nicest food to eat at all time as some is interesting, some is healthy and the best is most of them are yummy. Chinese’ dessert is not about cakes and pastry, but more about tang yuan (glutinous rice ball), fruits, paste and soup.

    When I was in Hong Kong and Singapore, I always eat desserts at there after and before meal because there’s too many desserts cafe already but then in Penang, there’s not much. Just recently, the number of this desserts cafe and restaurants are increasing.

    I went to one dessert house lately on Lorong Susu (near to Macalister Road, behind Town Steamboat House) as they are quite famous for tangyuan. The name is All About Sugar & Gift 团团圆圆团圆汤圆甜品屋. They have a variety of tangyuan with different fillings like sesame, peanuts, lianyong, and some special one like chocolate, cheese, tiramisu and more.

    My girlfriend ordered a bowl of tangyuan which called the Quan Jia Fu (Whole Family) RM6.90 which allows you to pick 5 big tang yuan with different filling. She picked Tiramisu, White Coffee, Chocolate and Cheese tangyuan. Well, according to her, she said it’s nice because of the special filling rather than normal filling, but the soup wasn’t good as it’s milk with ginger and it tasted a little bit spicy because of the ginger.

    I tried and I like the original one like sesame and nuts filling more though. If were to compare to the one in Hong Kong that I had before, Hong Kong’s better. Haha.

    I ordered myself something different, it’s a Mixed Fruit Sago (RM6.90) and it’s one of the chef recommended. It comes with different fruits cutlet, sago and also some colourful little plain tangyuan. I like this as it’s chilling, sweet and nice.

    For your little information, they do serve food too like rice and noodle instead just tang yuan and desserts. It may not be the best dessert house in town but it’s still a good place to hang out with your friends and eat some dessert, chill and relax.
