    Krakow: Kazimierz Jewish Quarter

Eastern Europe Trip // Krakow: Kazimierz Jewish Quarter – We were supposed to be on a public bus heading to Wieliczka Salt Mine, unfortunately we couldn’t make it, not because we missed the bus or short of time but it’s the receptionist had gave us a wrong bus info! We ended looking for the bus for an hour, asked the helpful local but no luck; sun set, night fell and times out. So the plan b was to tour around Kazimierz Jewish Quarter and only head to the the two main attractions of Krakow – Wieliczka Salt Mine and Auschwitz-Birkenau Death Camp the next day. This plan was quite challenging too because the salt mine and the concentration camp are both located very far away.

Back to Kazimierz, it’s a Jewish quarter in Krakow and this was like my first time coming in contact with Jews, Jewish, or Hebrew, or anything related as Jews are quite rare or none in Asia, and my passport is now allowed to go into Israel. So, it’s a very new thing to me!

With much excitement, I wandered around the Jewish quarter of Kazimierz and found, nothing much, except bunch of jewish restaurants, cool bars, Hebrews and a few Synagogue (Jewish temple). Pretty quiet at night and it took just less than an hour and a half to finish walking the whole Kazimierz. I’ve been to a Chinese temple, a church, a mosque, a Hindu temple, but not a synagogue. Too bad, it was late and it was closed for visit.

Night fell, nothing much to do, hungry, and we bought spaghetti and cooked at the hostel. That’s what a shoestring budget traveller does.

  • Malacca Trip: St. Paul Church Ruin and A Famosa

Malacca Trip: St. Paul Church Ruin and A Famosa

How can a visit to Malacca without visiting the most famous historical site in Malacca, the A Famosa fortress gate and also the St. Paul Church Ruins be? Haha. Both of these are the leftover by the Portugese more than 500 years ago. Dutch are the bad people who destroy the fortress and the church which left only the gate and also the ruins. HAHA. Selfish dutch.

Anyway, don’t want to blame anyone already. But if they did not destroy the fortress, I may have more thing to see today, not only just the little gate.

A Famosa not the water theme park is located somewhere in Malacca Town near to Jonker Walk. Actually I think you are able to walk from Jonker Walk to A Famosa, it takes about 15 minutes I guess but then due to hot weather, we drove there.

All the attractions in Malacca are so closely linked together. The famous Dataran Pahlawan shopping mall is also near here also, so do the Taming Sari Revolving Observation Tower.

The weather was very hot that day. I wish it’s cloudy day.

And dear Hueisean didn’t want to join me up to check out the St. Paul Church Ruin because of the heat as we were already sweating like hell. The bad thing is that the St. Paul Church Ruins is located on a little hill and need to walk up a flight of stairs.

Things get better upon reaching up there because of a little bit of wind breeze. Yet, it’s still hot when there’s no win.

It’s so pretty, I feel it’s even better than the ruins of St Paul’s Church is Macau because there’s four walls intact instead of just one like in Macau. Haha. But the one in Macau is more colorful. Though, both were also left by the Portugese in the past.

Up here, it doesn’t feel like being in Malacca or Malaysia anymore. It’s so western-ish and I kinda like historical thing. The bricks, the tombstones of old-famous Portugese and English are placed up there. There’s people selling art by playing guitar and singing along. What a pretty place.

Didn’t spend really long time up there because there’s nothing much, it’s quite small then I went back down again.

Taming Sari Revolving Observation Tower which I didn’t check it out.

I went down, quickly open up the umbrella-eh-eh and walked back to my vehicle. Hardly stand the heat. Then we went to check out the shopping mall, Dataran Pahlawan and Hatten Square, it’s kinda nice and surprised that Malacca has good mall. Good job on doing a good tourism business, I hope my hometown Penang can be better and even the best! Oh yeah.

  • St Anne’s Church At Bukit Mertajam Is Cool

St Anne’s Church At Bukit Mertajam Is Cool

It’s a 20 minutes drive from Penang Bridge to reach St Anne’s Sanctuary or simply known as the St Anne’s Church. I have been hearing from people saying that this church is nice, this church is cool, this church is huge, this church is old and I only saw it from photos and finally I got a chance to visit it.

Actually I have nothing to do in Penang, no school, no work, and so went visiting church. Haha. But I have a thing for holy places one because they are beautiful!

    IMG_5341 by nicholaschan.

The afternoon was quiet. Probably there’s no service on that day and church is always open for prayers. Apologize first if I write something wrong because I don’t really know about Christian and church. =)

At first glance, the place is huge! The little church standing above is not the main one, there’s even a bigger one at the other side and there’s like a place where we can up, like a little park on foot hill. I have no idea how to describe it. Haha.

When I saw the place, I was like “Wow, there’s actually something like this.” Pretty cool, I never see churches that big before, it’s not like those western one with very awesome design, it’s pretty but not very complicated, but the whole place is huge, with trees and super mini hiking trail which I called.

It gave me a feeling of peacefulness and nature. Rocks.

The church is huge! Next stop, we went to the Nine Emperor God Temple at Raja Uda, we almost lost while going there, so do come back and check it out soon. =) One more thing, they say it’s very happenings during St. Anne’s Annual Novena & Feast Day Celebration, from 23 July 2010 to 01 August 2010, it’s a day before I leave Penang, so maybe I could go check it out? =)

  • We Went to Bukit Mertajam

    We Went to Bukit Mertajam

We went to Province Wellesley on Tuesday’s afternoon. Where’s Province Wellesley? It’s Seberang Perai, the mainland of Penang. =D It’s the English name, but to most Penang island people, I guess they would just call it Butterworth. My days in Penang still left not many days only and I am very free everyday, have nothing to do, it’s either spending time sleeping at home or going out to explore things that haven’t been explored.

    IMG_5327 by nicholaschan.

Was on the phone with Sean last night and she talked about St. Anne’s Church which then gave me an idea where to go. =D I have wanted to go check it out a long time already as people told me it’s a very nice place and feel curious. I also have a thing for holy place, like temples, churches, they have nice architecture. =)

Yiphing. All  was like so busy.

    IMG_5325 by nicholaschan.

It was on a road trip, there’s me, Chien Chern who was the driver, Yiphing and Tee Jin. Four of us only, many friends were in school or already leaved Penang. So sad.

    IMG_5330 by nicholaschan.

We didn’t really know the place and how to go. I only checked it and mark it on Google Maps and the Google Maps brought us there. Sometimes must say hate Google Maps a bit because it will bring us to a rural place just to get away from toll and shortcut. But this trip to St Anne’s Church was safe. I’ll talk about it in another post as we eventually went into same kampung and paddy field while going to Nine Emperor God temple.

    IMG_5335 by nicholaschan.

Alright, Bukit Mertajam is where St Anne’s Church is and I always thought BM is near to Butterworth or Seberang Jaya or anywhere in Province Wellesley but actually they are not, they are far!

    IMG_5336 by nicholaschan.
This building is like so creepy and fugly!

First time coming here, there’s no high rise building, it’s all shop houses, bungalows, or the highest is like 3-4 floors. It’s a suburb and not a big town like us in Penang, and the road are small too.

    IMG_5337 by nicholaschan.

Reached St Anne’s Church safely. Stay tune for next post! =)
