Muar: Tam Jiak Kheh / Glutton Street / 贪食街 / Jalan Haji Abu

Muar: Tam Jiak Kheh / Glutton Street / 贪食街 / Jalan Haji Abu – I went for a half day trip to Muar after eating a lot at Malacca last weekend. Muar is a little town in the state of Johor and I’ve never been there before. I heard that there’s some nice food at there and moreover, the famous Youtube star Namewee is from Muar who always promotes his hometown, so I detoured to Muar before heading back to KL for a little exploration.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Tam Jiak Kheh, since 1952. Jalan Haji Abu of Muar.
Many food to choose, to eat, you can start out with the stalls in front of Kim San.

About 30 minutes from Malacca lies this little town of Muar, the town is not big and pretty easy to navigate around. It’s filled with lots of eclectic style Chinese shophouses in the town which most of them equipped with very tall antenna that is to steal the free-to-play channel from Singapore. XD

There in the town has this street with the local call it Tam Jiak Kheh (hokkien) that means Glutton Street, somewhere on Jalan Haji Abu. When I first read about it, I thought it’s a long street with lots of food, but upon arriving, it’s just a short street, but with food stalls on both side of the street, selling from day to night. Interesting.

Herbal Drinks, Liang Teh stall. Very cheap, RM0.60/glass.
Clarice buying Teochew Kuih which we didn’t really know any of them. Some were good, some were not, try it yourself and tell me good or not.
Chai Tou Gao / Chai Tao Kuih which tasted a bit tasteless. Hmm, I want more chilli sauce and soy sauce. Maybe I am from Penang and the food from Penang  has a stronger taste.

According to my Muar friend, Wei Kean, he told me that one can find almost all Muar’s food on this little street, so we spent a few hours at this street looking for Muar’s street food, gastronomically eating around. This town somehow gives me a friendly impression where the people are very friendly, some speak Hokkien dialect in Penang.

Parking at the roadside requires coupon. You can find parking coupon at the stalls on this street. Started of the exploration with Kim San Public Cooked-Food Market. You can find a lot of otak-otak which is famous in Muar, chicken rice, Chinese herbal tea, kuih, Char Koay Teow and more! So now let my photos bring you around.

Otak-otak. All selling at RM0.60/stick and freshly made. There’s fish and prawn, some crab. It tasted more spicy compare to Mapley 223’s.
Happy with the otak-otak. There’s too many otak-otak stalls at Tam Jiak Kheh. I can’t say which is the best, but I like this lorry’s outside Kim San Food Centre.
Opening otak-otak at chicken rice ball shop.
Walked further from Tam Jiak Kheh and we found the Muar Chicken Rice Ball. Bigger than Malacca’s but then I am disappointed with the taste. The chicken doesn’t look nice and the rice is just rice pressed into ball. I’ve heard good review but this is not a good one.
Chicken Rice Ball shop front, no feel. 日发鸡饭粒
Banana Fritter’s stall. Pisang Goreng! Looking yummy and good.
Alright, very crunchy, but the banana was not so good, kinda sour. I like Penang Tanjung Bunga’s. =D
They use very big banana, really really really big.
    5 Foot Path.
Used to be REX Cinema! REX was famous in Malaysia, maybe back in the 60s. Now turned into an electronic shop.
    Lovely old-school architecture.
    Pinky wall with nice door!
Indian temple on a Chinese street.
    Here’s Clarice. =D
    Somewhere at Tam Jiak Kheh.
    Pinky wall again.
Very interesting is that at there each street has their own colour, like the whole street is pink, whole street is blue, yellow and so on. Very colourful.

Not much we ate around there, we ate Chai Tao Kuih, Teochew Kuih, plenty of Otak-otak, plenty of herbal drinks, Chicken Rice Ball, Banana Fritters and that’s all. Wanted to eat satay as I heard it’s good, but no luck finding any of the stalls open on that day.

One thing, you can buy the street food, then walk in to any of the coffee shop to eat, be sure to clean them up when you are done. =D

  • Malacca: Wan Tan Mee @ Dung Fong Food Court

Malacca: Wan Tan Mee @ Dung Fong Food Court

Malacca: Wan Tan Mee @ Dung Fong Food Court – I’ve heard before that the Wan Tan Mee (Noodle) at Malacca is different from elsewhere of Malaysia, the Malaccan has their own version of Wan Tan Mee. Thus, I went to Malacca to identify and see how different it is.

I found a stall located near to the Tong Bee Seafood which is also recommended by one of the local there. I went there after my little sihum lala meal and it’s actually quite nearbu to each other but then the GPS somehow took me a big round to reach it, don’t know why.

In a little food court of Dong Feng, many people were waiting for the Wan Tan Mee, it came after 10 minutes of waiting. It’s RM4 per plate and what’s different is there’s sio bak/siu yok roasted pork on it! Normally Wan Tan Mee serves with BBQ pork cha siu, but this one has additional siu yok. The sauce or gravy is a bit more saturated than the normal waterish soy sauce. Indeed, it tasted different because of the gravy that contains a little bit of chilli oil or something like that which tasted a bit of spicyness that I like!

It’s not a big different as I expected, but it has it own style and I kinda like it with siu yok. If the style is mix with Penang’s and KL’s that it will be super awesome as Penang uses lard, Kuala Lumpur has very good BBQ pork and noodle whereas Malacca’s gravy is special.F Do check out this place if you wanna try out Malacca-style Wan Tan Mee.

  • Malacca: Back Alley Cockles, Lala, Cuttlefish Seafood @ Tong Bee’s Stall

Malacca: Back Alley Cockles, Lala, Cuttlefish Seafood @ Tong Bee’s Stall

Malacca: Back Alley Cockles, Lala, Cuttlefish Seafood @ Tong Bee’s Stall – In August, I went to Malacca with friends, but then I missed out quite some nice food spot in the little historical town and one of them is this little seafood stalls located at the back alley / lorong of Jalan Bunga Raya. Little seafood that I mean are those small stuff like lala, siham (cockles), cuttlefish, tiger prawns and some other non-seafood like BBQ toufu.

It’s a truly local style of food stall because firstly, it’s located on a back alley that you can hardly find it unless you walk into it, then you sit onto a low stool and share a long table with others. Very got feel and culture.

Notice King’s or MY JEANS FASHION. It’s the alley left to it.

It took me and Clarice a little while to search for it while driving on Jalan Bunga Raya and finally found it located beside My Jeans Fashion. You will be welcome and amazed by the little stalls located at the back alley, there’s two stalls and go for the one nearer to the street which is Tong Bee Stall, another one is operated by Capitol Satay Celup.

Famous TV food show host Axian came before too!
    Preparing.
    Sihum Cockles.
    Lala.
    Cuttlefish with Kangkung.

Sit down on the low stool and start ordering. There’s lala (RM1.50), sihum (RM1.50), cuttlefish with vege (RM7 for 2 person), tiger prawns and BBQ toufu. They are all very small plate and come with hot and sour chilli sauce which is good. Not forget to mention, the price is pretty reasonable too!

    Clarice with the lala.
Thumbs up initially, thumbs down for the unfortunate event.
Night comes to life at the quiet alley.

One unfortunate event was that I ate a very stinky sihum which taste like, dirty drain water or something shit, it just gave me a bad experience. Probably because it’s not clean enough from the mud. Ewwwww. It was a good head start, ended with a bad sihum. But overall, this is something interesting, smell your sihum before you put in your mouth. Haha.

Malacca: Masjid Selat Melaka / Malacca Strait’s Mosque (Night)

Malacca: Masjid Selat Melaka / Malacca Strait’s Mosque (Night) – Revisited this cool floating mosque at Malacca for the second time, but this time is during night time. It has become photographer’s favourite place to shoot in Malacca and I being an avid photographer, how can I not check out this place at night and take a few shots? =D

  • Malacca: Short While At Jonker Walk

Malacca: Short While At Jonker Walk

Malacca: Short While At Jonker Walk – The famous Jonker Walk of Malacca, unfortunately, it’s not my cup of tea for this trip. It’s rainy and I only went there to eat Chendul and Nyonya Asam Laksa @ Jonker 88 and also grab a stick of favourite deep fried spiral potato and that’s it.

Nothing much to explore as I’ve been there for several time, I prefer heading out to look for food where I found a very special back lane seafood stall and Malacca’s Wan Tan Mee – check out my blog later. =D

So, yeah Jonker Walk a.k.a. Jalan Hang Jebat, the street beside the hotel I was staying and I was there a short while only.

  • Malacca: Good Morning, Where’s The Sunrise?

Malacca: Good Morning, Where’s The Sunrise?

    Good Morning Malacca!

Malacca: Good Morning, Where’s The Sunrise? – Hello, I just came back from Malacca people, the historical tourist city of Malaysia! I was so lazy this morning and reluctant to go out of my hotel to search for the sunrise spot, so I stayed in my room and keep my eyes out of the window.

The dragon at the entrance of Jonker Walk sprouts out water from the mouth
Looking lovely although no sun, I was facing the wrong direction. LOL

I guess, there’s some problem with my compass on my phone where the East was not really the ‘Sunrise East’ that I was looking out. Anyway, I woke up early, 5 minutes before sunrise time according to Google and waited, but find no sun rise and only a ray of sun glowing at far end. Well, I slept back after that. =D

  • Singapore: My First Time Eating TWG Macarons!

Singapore: My First Time Eating TWG Macarons!

Singapore: My First Time Eating TWG Macarons! – Guess what?! It’s my first time eating macarons, for all my 20 years on earth, with all the trends and people talking about macarons, finally I’ve got myself hands on the macarons. Haha. Funny, and don’t laugh me. I’ve always wanted to eat but I’m just lazy to go get it and I feel macarons are expensive all the time. LOL. In fact, some is cheap. =D

Colourful and they are all tea flavoured.

No idea what’s macaron is, it’s just colourful in my mind, and sweet. Well, to make it simple, it’s a French confectionery snack which is sweet, soft and colourful. Yeah.

    S$2/macaron.

Was at Singapore last weekend and randomly walked into one of the many TWG Tea Store in Marina Bay Sands and bought a box of 6 to try out. Mom said it’s too sweet, well, I have sweet tooth, and I like it. Bang. What do you think?

  • Ipoh: 糖水街 Tong Sui Kai (Desserts Street)

Ipoh: 糖水街 Tong Sui Kai (Desserts Street)

Ipoh: 糖水街 Tong Sui Kai (Desserts Street) – Ipoh oh Ipoh, I spent the day eating at Burps & Giggles, and also some times in Ipoh Parade shopping centre, it’s also the day I went to watch Sinister, oh so scary, shocking and exciting. =D Night, I went to this Tong Sui Kai, which literally means desserts street near old town, somewhere just in front Sam Tet Primary School (SRJK Sam Tet).

So this street has a lot of desserts right? Not really, there’s few stalls only, selling the same Chinese desserts like lin chi kang, ABC and mix-fruit ice and stuff like that. Besides there’s local food stalls like wan tan mee, beef noodle and more! Sounds interesting right?

Once interesting thing in Ipoh is that they are proud about their food, unlike in Kuala Lumpur, hawker stalls tend to write food place name at the their stall like Penang Asam Laksa, Ipoh Hor Fun and blablabla. At there, it’s just Asam Laksa, Wan Tan Mee.

Well, I ordered a plate of wan tan mee (RM3.50) and a bowl of qing bu liang  清补凉 (RM2.50). Cheap and yummeh! Well, consider this as a place for dinner in Ipoh. =)

  • Ipoh // Sekeping Kong Heng

    Ipoh // Sekeping Kong Heng

Lobby, I assumed, A common area too.

Ipoh // Sekeping Kong Heng – NG SEKSAN, one famous landscape and building architect in Malaysia whose concept is based on raw materials. Sekeping Kong Heng is one of his masterpiece located in Ipoh, Old Town, on top of of a old school kopitiam called Kong Heng.

My classmate actually went there before on a class trip but I missed the chance last time. On my visit to Burps & Giggles, I accidentally came across it that this is connected with the cafe. They are just back to back.

Well, talk a little bit about Sekeping, it’s a modern type of hotel, or you might call it homestay, it’s totally different from the typical hotel with a luxurious lobby, nice hotel room with warm light and shiny marble floor bathroom. The Sekeping is a hotel series located throughout Malaysia and which most of them have their different identity or style, but most of them with design based on bare raw material. There’s one Sekeping Victoria in Penang too.

Well, side alley of the building.
Kopitiam Kong Heng in front. It’s totally different thing from the back of the building,
    Corridor to the room.
Green wall shading the area and the room.
I was able to open up the louver window and snap a shot of interior of the room. Weird, cold, cool, open, raw feeling.

Located on the first and second floor of the Kong Heng Kopitiam shophouse building is the Sekeping Kong Heng hotel, there’s like 10 rooms on first floor and and there’s a mini lobby at the ground floor. The second floor is more likely the roof area is a leisure/gathering spot. The whole building is open for visit except the hotel room.

    The sexy stairs.
Attic area where there’s two more bed up here.
Gathering, hangout spot at the roof.
A view of adjacent building. Truly old town of Ipoh.

It’s more likely something new that you haven’t experience before. Living so close to the local, you can hear the laughter of uncles drinking kopi-peng in the morning, chattering in local Cantonese dialect, a connection with the raw material and the original building, it definitely will bring up a lot of feeling and inspiration in you. Well, Sekeping Kong Heng is sexy, I would say. Yums.

  • Singapore: Another Swim At Marina Bay Sands Skypark Swimming Pool

Singapore: Another Swim At Marina Bay Sands Skypark Swimming Pool

Singapore: Another Swim At Marina Bay Sands Skypark Swimming Pool – It’s swimming again! The weather on Saturday was very nice with a little bit of Sunny weather, yet it’s still windy up there and the water was still chilly cold. =D

Lovely sunset from the 57th floors of Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

How can I not swim till the max when it’s one of the best swimming pool in the wold with awesome view at a high altitude and moreover we paid S$300+/night for the hotel room. So yeah, swim to the max. This time, a little bit of blue sky, a little bit of Sun, not too cloudy yet, and I have my super wide angle lens with me – photography time!

The pool was even more crowded on a weekend evening. People were everywhere, sunbathing, swimming, just chit-chatting. Me and brother went for a little dip in the water, it’s cold and crowded so it’s not really swimming. Just fooling around with the camera and jokes. Still, I wish the water has heater to maintain a warm water, how nice it would be?

Well, that’s my last time in the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark Pool and I kinda miss it. Please share with me some other cool swimming pool in the world. For instance, I wanna visit the Therma Vals in Switzerland, it’s a hotel built over a thermal springs. So cold, and so warm!
