    Nice Chinese Food At Teksen Restaurant, Penang

    Teksen, Teik Seng or Tek Seng Restaurant at Carnavon Street (Lebuh Carnvaon), I believe they have got good local Chinese food! It’s because that I am the restaurant visitor for the past 10 years. That’s right, I went there to eat since when I was really young where it was on the other outlet. It is now located in a nice shop houses, nicely decorated too!

    To me, instead of calling Teksen Restaurant, I prefer to call it Teochew Lang (People of Teochew) as the boss who is also the chef is a Teochew people.

    During the recently visit, I brought my camera along and so I snapped some shots to share with you a few dishes of our little lunch. It was a Friday afternoon and I was craving for Teochew Lang’s food, then I went there with my parents.

    Looking at the interiors, it’s a semi-open restaurant with a blends of heritage and modern design. The steel tables and chairs bring back the memories to the olden times. It was about 1pm and you can see many people was having their meal there, in fact the restaurant was full with no empty tables.

    I guess we took the last table right outside the restaurant. Although the weather was pretty hot that day, we still sit outside because the food was so tempting.

    We ordered 3 dishes and a soup. Simple dishes yet delicious. The Chinese steam egg with century and salted egg is our all time favourite.

    Here comes the soup which I don’t really know how to call in English, but in the Hokkien dialect, it’s Sok Tei Thng or in Mandarin is Shu Di Tang (熟地汤). It’s Chinese soup cook with pork and Chinese Foxglove. Very healthy and yummy.

    We ordered a kangkung fried balachan too for our vegetable dishes. Pretty good with 3 big prawns in it, not very spicy, just nice and it’s good to eat.

    No idea what is this right? It’s actually fried roasted pork. It’s the best dish to me in here. It’s roasted pork fried with garlic, black soy sauce and some chili and it tasted sweet. I can have two bowl of rice with just dish. Yum yum.

    Penang is so famous for Char Koay Teow and it’s a must eat when you come visit in Penang or if you are a Penangite, you must like it. Haha. There’s too many nice char koay teow in Penang and one of which I know and like is in Pulau Tikus market, at the hawker stall area which sells only at night.

    The stall name is called the Sin Wah Char Koay Teow and I got to tell you that the owner got a little bit cocky. He will always tell you, ” You need to wait 30 minutes, want to wait or not?” Haha. But I don’t mind waiting because it usually served in about 15 minutes.

    There’s 3 big prawns in the koay teow, nicely fried with salted duck egg and lard. The fragrance, the taste and the texture are real good. It may not be the best, I don’t know how to say it’s the best, yet it’s nice. The best part, it’s only RM4.50 which is cheaper than the RM8 at Lorong Selamat.

    The sun was going down on a Saturday evening and my parents brought me to Weld Quay for a dinner. Cruising along the seaside at Weld Quay was nice as it brings us to a friendlier part of Penang with all walks of life. The golden sun was setting and it’s an quiet and yet to be noisy Saturday evening.

    We came to this 乡下鱼头米粉 which translated is Xiang Xia Fish Head Bee Hoon (rice noodle). As stated in their name, the famous dish is the fish head bee hoon, but there’s another famous dish and that is the tomyam noodle which I was craving for and I like.

    I have never been to this place before but I heard many good comment about it and how spicy the tomyam noodle is. I ordered a bowl which is less spicy and no doubt, it’s really delicious, especially eating with fried fish fillet and maggi noodle. Just one thing, the maggi noodle was too little. Anyway, it’s still yummy.

    One of the nice place to have some local hawker food for lunch and tea is the Padang Brown Food Court, which located at Padang Brown, in line with Perak Road. Padang which literally means field, which on the other hand, Padang Brown means Brown’s Field.

    There’s actually 3 food courts on Padang Brown, one houses under the official food court built for hawker, another 2 are not really official. It’s quite easy to spot this food court as it’s inline with Perak Road and also by the junction of Perak Road and Anson Road. There’s a monument in the middle of the food court too.

    This food court only opens in the afternoon and offer a variety of local hawker food for you to try out like Char Koay Teow, Lok Lok, Asam Laksa and more.

    People usually finds lok-lok at night time but at here you can find it in the afternoon. Lok-lok is actually raw food on stick, which you need to dip them in super hot boiling water and cook your own food. Then you eat it with different sauces. You can get as cheap as RM0.50 per stick.

    I wasn’t that obsessed with char koay teow back then. All of this craving and obsession for char koay teow comes after I went to study at Kuala Lumpur and I had so much char koay teow during this holiday in my hometown, Penang.

    I ordered myself a plate of char koay teow (RM3.00) at the food court and the redness looks spicy and yes it is, somehow it’s still good even it’s spicy. Although, it might not be the best, it’s still so much better than char koay teow in Kuala Lumpur and other places. You can always request for less spicyness. The only thing was it’s not dry enough.

    Despite all the hotness, a glass of coconut juice was chilling at the food court and it’s a must try. =)

    In Penang, there’s a very famous curry mee at Lorong Seratus Tahun, the road name literally means 100 years lane and I have no idea why is it named so. Most Penangite who love to eat sure knows about this place and the curry mee. Located in an old kopitiam on the corner, the kopitiam has a vintage feel as the owner love Chinese oldies.

    The spiciness depends on how much curry paste you put in. Nothing much to review, I have to say, it’s good and nice.

    On a lovely evening, I went dating with my dearest one, Hueisean at the tree house restaurant on Burma Road, the Jemputree Restaurant. It’s a Malay style tree house serving halal western and local Malay cuisine. I was kinda attracted by the tree house concept and it’s kinda cool and cute.

    It was a Tuesday night and there’s not many people at there so we could go up the tree house and for your information, there’s only one tree house seating. It’s actually not a tree house, it’s a elevated platform right under the tree, so it seems to be dining on a “tree house”. Some says that the area need to be made reserve as it’s quite a hot spot.

    Anyway, let’s get into the food of that night. I didn’t feel of having local food that night, so I went for western food ala Asian style. I ordered the local famous Chicken Cordon Blue. Surprisingly, the chicken is kinda small in portion. Taste is O-K but too little. It’s kinda not enough for the small stomach of mine.

    Next up is a pizza, the Hawaiian Chicken pizza. Wanted to order the four season but it’s out of stock and hawaiian chicken it was. Thin crust pizza with cheesy ingredient. Yummy, but the ingredient doesn’t stick to the bread well.

    Overall, the food is OK-GOOD only. It’s just another nice place to chill out with friends of have a romantic time on the tree. =) Beware of mosquitoes.

    I love Hokkien Prawn Noodle, I love Penang Prawn Noodle, I love Hokkien Mee. Err, what’s the difference? Actually it’s all the same, just different names. Haha, Penang people like to call it Hokkien Mee, outstation like to call it Penang Prawn Noodle, I like to call it, Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee Noodle. Just kidding. Just Hokkien Prawn Mee will do.

    So, this Hokkien Prawn Mee is a Penang’s famous food and most people will thought of it’s only sell by the Chinese or perhaps Chinese Hokkien people. Today, I am going to introduce you guys a Hokkien Prawn Mee sell by our lovely Malay friends, Cifu Omar.

    This is a Malay made Hokkien Prawn Mee which is 100 percent halal and delicious. Malay, Chinese, Indian, everyone will like it. Just that you won’t find any pork or lard in the soup, still maintaining a nice Hokkien Prawn Mee’s taste and feel.

    Due to running out of bee hoon that day, the person mixed in koay teow (flat noodle) with the yellow noodle and it’s my first time trying out this version of Hokkien Prawn Mee. Guess what, it’s tasted nice! They replaced pork with chicken, lot’s of mini prawn and crabstick too! The taste just felt Penang to me, a little bit sweet and spicy, still nice.

    Hokkien Prawn Mee’s fans or lovers can give this a try because I felt that it’s good. Located at Tanjung Tokong beside Petronas petrol station, it only opens for breakfast and lunch. Be quick because if late bit during noon time, it would have been sold out already. In addition, they do sell Koay Teow Th’ng (Koay Teow Soup) ala Malay style too, but I didn’t try before. =)

    Recently, I just found out that Raja Uda of Butterworth has many hidden gems. There’s lots of nice cafe, and food lying around Raja Uda, Butterworth area. Luckily, Penang island and butterworth is only just a little sea across or to be specific, half an hour away. I should go there hunt for food more. =)

    So one fine tuesday, I went over to Raja Uda for dinner. At first, I wanted to go for the famous tomyam noodle but then it didn’t open that day. Weird. Then I just went around Raja Uda area to look for restaurant randomly and I found this nice looking restaurant + cafe, Who’s Bryan, located on Jalan Ong Yi How, somewhere near Jalan Raja Uda.

    It was kinda late already and feeling hungry, so I didn’t care about looking for other already, so dearest and I just went in and sit down.

    It’s a nice looking restaurant. The interior is quite nice, with live band playing nice Chinese music at there, the atmosphere seems good for youngster to hangout and chit chat.

    Well, looking at the menu, they serve mainly western food with some local dishes like fried rice.

    There’s also combo or also known as set meal for some where you top up some money and get extras like soup, salad and beverage.

    Let’s go into the food. I ordered my main course with the combo D, so it comes with a mushroom soup, with a little garlic bread cube in it. Tasted a little bit salty but kinda nice. I like this.

    Then the next thing that come with the combo is the salad. It’s just vegetable, plain salad with very little sauce and it’s not so nice because of that little sauce.

    Here comes the main course. It’s the spaghetti bolognese, chicken. To be honest, it’s so-so only. It seems like asian style to me instead of western-ish feel with creamy bolognese sauce. I should try other food next time.

    So, the food is so-so only but this is a nice place to hang out and chit chat with friends at night because of the atmosphere, live band and some snacks to order, there’s beer too! If got chance will go back and try other food. =)

    On a wet Monday morning, which was also the first Monday of the new year, I went to the old part of the town to have my lunch. At first of thinking eating the Ah Wan’s Curry Mee by the market near Campbell Street and Carnavon Street, but accidentally found a Hokkien Mee stall on a trishaw at there. So mom and dad ordered curry mee and I went to order a bowl of authentic Penang hokkien prawn noodle.

    Dad told me that this little stall existed like many many years ago, as old as like 15 to 20 years old. Last time, the ah pek (local slang for uncle or old people) sells at the backlane of the shophouses on Buckingham Street and now he is out of the backlane, stationed outside the old market. To be exact, the street is almost the end of Carnavon Street, near to the crossing of Campbell Street. I’ll put a map below.

    Different from modernized hokkien prawn mee, there’s not many pork lard or extra added ingredient like siu yok/sio bak (roasted pork), ribs and big prawn. It’s authentic Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee with lots of little little super little shrimps, prawn soup, noodles, some meat and that’s all. Yummy.

    A week ago, I went to dinner with my dearest Hueisean to celebrate our five months together. Ok stop here for the story. Haha. I have been hearing a lot about Ferringhi Garden and finally I got a chance to go check it out. It’s really a nicely decorated restaurant with a lot of greens and lights. It’s really like dining out in the garden but because of hating the mosquito, I picked to dine indoor. The indoor’s atmosphere is still awesome.

    The restaurant is very easy to be seen, they have a huge signboard at Batu Ferringhi after Park Royal Hotel. The pricing are quite expensive, starts from RM25++.

    First up, they served garlic bread as appertizer and it’s just a normal garlic bread to me.

    I ordered an oriental style chicken chop. The sauce is kinda sweet and nice. As for the chicken, it’s just battered and deep fried. Not a bad one.

    My friend ordered a fish and chip. Deep fried again but somehow, I feel this is better than the chicken chop. =)

    Lastly, I ordered a dessert. It’s a chesse cake with a scoop of strawberry ice cream. Well, this dessert is the best part of the night. The cheese cake has chocolate biscuit at the bottom and the strawberry ice cream is delicious. =D

    To conclude about the restaurant, it’s a romantic place to go with your loves one, but the price is the point that is repelling me. However, if there’s birthday or other occassion, I may go back again.
