Monday Macallum Street Pasar Malam (Night Market) 五条路夜市

Monday Macallum Street Night Market (Pasar Malam) 五条路夜市 – Macallum Street, also known as 5th Road, or Gor Tiao Lor 五条路 has pasar malam on Monday night at the basketball area. As usual, it’s not a fix night market and the vendors are on mobile, moving from place to place, like Tuesday to Tanjung Bungah, Wednesday to Farlim, Friday to Jelutong and Sunday to Paya Terubong.

It’s no surprise that you can see the same vendors at different night market location on different night. On Monday night, I went to check out the Macallum Street night market, it’s my first time visiting the night market there. Macallum Street is a high-density housing area with lots of low-cost flats in town, and I usually go there to eat tomyam noodle at Ruyi’s.

I parked my car by the roadside and then went to explore the night market with Hueisean. It was not a great night as the weather was like going to rain. Flashing can be seen in the sky, but there’s no rain. Maybe because of this, some vendors decided not to open business that night.

Same as other night market, you can find food, clothing, and some home accessories there. I did see many food, but not many clothing. So far, the night market with the most clothing is Farlim’s, and food wise can check out Jelutong’s. Overall, the best in Penang is still Farlim’s.

Bought some street snacks to bite on like chicken pop corn and deep fried siu mai, they are so delicious, and unhealthy. =D

Bangkok Trip: Night Market Outside Central World (Day 4) – Well, it almost comes to the last post and last day of my Bangkok trip. I still have one more post to share about. So after going to a day of Bangkok sightseeing trip to Wat Pho, Wat Arun and Grand Palace, I went back to hotel to take a rest to recharge my power. Later at night, it’s pretty free and no place of interest to go already.

Mom randomly suggested walking around the Central World shopping mall area as there’s a small night market right in front of the mall. We walked from our hotel and it took us about 20 minutes to reach there. It’s nice to walk at night because the weather get cooler and is away from the sunny sun.

At the night market outside Central World, you can find typical Thai’s night market stuff like clothing, beauty accessories, footwear, lots of street food, gift and more. Didn’t really buy anything there except a bottle of beverage and went to bought a notebook in Central World instead. Hehe, thanks dear Huei for getting me the notebook.

Since there’s nothing much to see at there, we went back to hotel for the last night. And so, my Bangkok trip has put a full-stop here. The last day, day 5 is just another going-to-airport-and-back day.

Wednesday Farlim Pasar Malam (Night Market)

Wednesday Farlim Night Market – It’d been some times I didn’t go to night market in Penang, except to those in Bangkok. Haha. Bangkok’s night market and Penang’s is somehow different as we have got more food here and they have got more clothing at there.

Night market (pasar malam) is fun but then the items and food are repetitive so it gets bored after some times. However, going to the night market once in a blue moon is kinda fun, especially eating the yummy and unhealthy street food.

The plan was actually to search for a cheap RM10 mop for cleaning the floor but it failed because there wasn’t anyone selling at there. I recalled back and it’s actually the night market at Taman Connaught in Kuala Lumpur that sells the cheap mop, but not here in Penang.

At Farlim’s, the stalls are more about clothing, accessories and FOOD! Hueisean and I found no mop and we turned our sight to food instead. Was craving for oily deep fried unhealthy food which is very yummy and we bought ourselves fried dumpling and the unhealthy deep fried chicken skins. OMG.

The after-dinner “desserts” was pretty satisfying. In addition, I brought a packet of sugar cane and grass jelly to balance the oily unhealthy meal. Fried food at the night market rocks! Chicken skin is so awesome, why it must be so unhealthy?! Haha.

Bangkok Trip: Huai Khwang Night Market (Day 3) – Oops, I missed out a place after eating my dinner at Somboon Seafood Restaurant on the third day of my Bangkok Trip last week. Right after our dinner, we went to tour around the area of Huai Khwang. Walking along Ratchadaphisek, and turned left into Pracharat Bamphen Road when reaches a junction leaded us to a row of night market and stalls located along the road.

It’s the Huai Khwang night market and wet market area. Unlike night market in town, this one is more cater to the locals around that area, selling clothing, accessories, shoes, and also raw food and vegetables at the wet market. Besides, there’s many exotic sexy clothing because of the presence of night club workers at this area. We toured around this place for an hour before heading back to the hotel. The wet market is where we stopped as it’s boring and smelly. Now I know that they shop for meat and vegetables at night, something different.

Bangkok Trip: Talad Rot Fai – Retro Train Night Market – I believe many visitor to Bangkok does not aware of this night market that’s called Talad Rot Fai, included me until I found it on CNNGo website. Talad Rot Fai, also known as Talad Dek Naew or in English – the Train Market is a night market that features retro stuff, antiques, second hand clothing and also a hangout place for Thai’s retro hipster.

“Talad” means market and “Rot Fai” means train in Thai which reflects the venue which is actually an abandoned train warehouse and tracks.

It was kinda hard to communicate with the taxi driver about this place even I showed him a map of the location, many of the taxi drivers are not from Bangkok itself and not really familiar with all of the road in Bangkok. I told him about Kamphaeng Phet MRT Station, somewhere near there then he brought us there. Sucking blood, he charged 250Baht for the trip.

Anyway, forget about the cab driver, he brought us there safe and sound. I was pretty worried it didn’t open or not exist as I couldn’t find much info about it on the Internet. When I saw the light and sound of Thai, I became excited and found many people going in and out of the “Talad Rot Fai” train night market.

The Talad Rot Fai is actually located near to Kamphaeng Phet MRT Station, so it’s easier to take the MRT here and then you walk towards west of the station, which is also the way away from Chatuchak Weekend Market.

A little bit history about this train market is that it’s started off 2 years back in 2010. It was just an abandoned warehouse and railway track and Rod’s Antique rented the place to sell antique stuff. Rod’s Antique was actually located near to Chatuchak Weekend Market. Then Rod’s invited many vendors to sell stuff at here for free. When it was free, there’s not much stalls and vendors, but once they started collecting rental, more and more vendors come in. Funny right.

This train market sells a lot of 2nd hand retro stuff, clothing, antique and has many modified Volkswagen van which then turned into a mini vehicle bar playing retro music, offering beer and other beverage. You can find some cool artsy futsy printed tee here as well as some nice retro home decor.

Mom dislike second hand clothing, but those clothing looks as good as new. I find this place quite interesting because it’s a retro theme night market. Many youngster dress up in retro fashion too! What I like the most is the Volkswagen modified van which I feel it’s very cool.

Deep in the warehouse is outlets of different antique shops including Rod’s.

You may also grab a beer and sit at one of the outdoor bistro too. We walked for about 2 hours at there, explored, only then we headed back to the hotel.

Talad Rot Fai / Talak Dek Naew / Train Market is opens on Saturday and Sunday from 5pm. Get there as late as 8pm when all the stalls are out in full force.

To get to the Talad Rot Fai, take the MRT to Kampaeng Phet Station. Get out at exit 3 (Or Tor Gor Market) then cross the road and walk about 450 meters west on Kampaeng Phet Road, away from Chatujak Market. For a map (in Thai) click here.

Bangkok Trip: Night Street Market Near Baiyoke Hotel & Petchburi (Day 1) – After checked-in to our hotel at Pratunam’s Petchburi area, we went for dinner just right out our hotel, which is Thai food (Tom Yum Restaurant) and it’s pretty good.

After dinner, it’s time to start our night hunt for some street night market at this area. We didn’t really know where has got night market, but instinct tells me that there’s one near the famous Baiyoke Sky Hotel. Baiyoke Sky Hotel is also the tallest building in Bangkok and located about 1.5km from our hotel.

Along the way to Baiyoke Sky Hotel, there’s many street food vendors along the road which serve food like Pad Thai, BBQ, fruits, and more. Since I’ve had my dinner, those food didn’t seem attractive to me by then.

After about 15 minutes of walk, crossed a big road with pedestrian bridge and we arrived the Baiyoke Sky Hotel area, happily, we found the typical Thailand night street market. Hueisean and my mom became excited when they saw a row of clothing stalls. I was then busy snapping around. Nothing seems amaze to me though. You can find the standard Thai’s singlet with Singha beer logo, fake Ralph Lauren, cheap pyjamas, t-shirts and more.

It’s quite interesting to see the night market and you can find some good bargain too. Though, I didn’t buy anything but Hueisean bought a few pairs of cheap ear rings at 20baht/pair.

After an hour of shopping and exploring, we went back to the hotel with tuk-tuk at 80Baht as we were lazy to walk back already. Be careful when sitting on tuk-tuks as they can be fast and be sure to bargain with them first as they always offer high price.

We actually went to foot massage later then at 200Baht/hour, which I think is pretty expensive. You can get cheaper one at 150Baht/hour.

Visit Tow Boo Kong Before Chinese New Year

Visit Tow Boo Kong Before Chinese New Year – Tow Boo Kong, the very famous temple in Raja Uda which also known as Nine Emperor Gods Temple is now decorated with Chinese New Year lighting and become very beautiful and magnificent at night. Besides that, the whole open compound of the temple is converted into a night market site that runs until Chinese New Year where people can shop, pray, see and eat.

It becomes very happenings at night. I was lucky to be around Raja Uda, Butterworth area last night so I went there to check out as I heard it’s very beautiful at night. Indeed it look very grand. The temple only lights up during festival like Chinese New Year and Nine Emperor Gods festival so you must not miss out right now.

Tuesday Tanjung Bungah Market Pasar Malam (Night Market) – Pasar malam, also known as night market is my favourite as there have a variety of delicious street snacks to eat and cheap stuff to shop for like clothing, mini electric appliances, accessories and more but the most important, is the food. Unlike in China, night market doesn’t station at a place every night. Every night is at different places around Penang.

On Tuesday night, there’s a wet market and food court which turns into a crowded and happenings night market when sun set. Cars started parking by the road side and people of all walk of life flows into the night market to bring a happening atmosphere.

I do go there occasionally for some light snacks, like crepe cake, hot dog, bubble tea, and local delicious hawker food.

Frankly, it’s not the best night market in Penang yet as Jelutong Taman Kheng Thean Night Market (Friday) and Farlim Night Market (Wednesday) have even more street food for you to choose. Nevertheless, a night market in the middle of the high end condominium residential area of this Tanjung Bungah bring a sense of local-ness to the high class living. You can see foreign residents enjoying night market too.

After a day of tiring work, a little walk at the night market with some icy drinks on hand is very relaxing. It get you out of the busy-ness of the city and traffic jam and slow your mind down.

Malacca Trip: The Famous Night Market, Jonker Walk a.k.a. Jalan Hang Jebat

When people talk about Malacca, people talk about Jonker Walk. Jonker Walk is one of the icon of Malacca. So basically what is Jonker Walk? It’s a street which has various name, Jalan Hang Jebat, Jonker Street, Jonker Walk, but commonly known as Jonker Walk that sells souvinirs, antique and food, and also turns into crowded night market on the weekend.

The building on this street are old and have heritage feel and look. I like old building and places, they are real beautiful when compare to today’s architecture because olden’s day art were more complicated, more hard work which is different from today lazy minimaism art.

Jonker Street is quiet in the afternoon but when it comes to night on the weekend, the place turns into a crowded and most happenings place in Malacca. It’s a night market, selling street food, souvinirs, toys, clothing and lots more.

I actually came here before like when I was 13-14 years old but I can’t really recall that much about the place until I revisited a few weeks back. I was amaze by the crowds and how the people run this place. It isn’t like any places in Penang. It’s cool, it’s happening, it’s fun and there’s lots of food.

Local, other states people, tourist, Singaporean, all came to this place in the weekend. One thing that I wish is that it could be as long as the Taman Connaught’s night market, but nevertheless, it’s awesome and I feel it’s better because of the heritage feeling of the place.

Besides night market and stalls, you can locate quite a number of heritage-style restaurant along the Jonker Walk, catering western dishes and local dishes. Yum yum.

I am more into street food and local food so I didn’t really check out the restaurants at there. Street food are cool enough like taiwan sausaages, potato roll, bubble tea and more are damn awesome!

Sucks, DON’T EAT THIS. IT’S FREAKING RM10 AND NOT DELICIOUS AT ALL.

I am not defaming the sotong bakar, but it’s really very expensive with a small pack and it’s nothing special at all. It’s freaking RM10!

Jonker88. A nice restaurant service some good Malacca food, but crowded all the time and not very clean cause we saw a rat ran over. Haha.

The street is about half kilometre and we spent 3 hours at there, I am wondering how we spent so long at there. Haha. There’s some sort of high school student cultural performance at there, after walking tiringly, we sat down to check out what’s happening on the stage. When I see them perform, I misses my high school life, awhhh.

Well, this is a nice place and must-visit place in Malacca during the weekend, remember it’s only available on the weekend. Wear lightly as it’s pretty warm at night and perspiration may break out of your pore. Indulge yourself with the yummy street food and some shopping. =)

Penang, please make some place like this. It’s cool.

Chew Chew Chow Tofu (Stinky Tofu) At Taman Connaught Pasar Malam

I went to the famous and longest night market in Kuala Lumpur last Wednesday night and that’s the Taman Connaught Pasar Malam. After visiting the night market here, I felt that Penang’s night market is not that happenings and have less food. Nevertheless, they still rocks as I am a night market fan.

I realized that they do sell the stinky tofu (fermented tofu) here at the night market, which is pretty cool because all the while, I thought these stinky tofu is only available in Hong Kong and China, Kuala Lumpur have them too! At Taman Connaught night market, there’s one famous one which is the Chew Chew Chow Tofu which always has people queuing up for their stinky tofu.

It really smells bad but seeing so many people were in the line, I and my friend joined in too, to find out how stinky they are.

They are tiny fried tofu but with a strong odor. There’s small little pieces and also big pieces of tofus.

Well, just to try out, we bought 4 little pieces. It’s not tofu itself only, but with some sweet sauce and a little bit picked vegetable on top.

So how’s the taste? Just a little crispy thingy, tasted good, but super not healthy cause it’s deep fried and the oil reuse and reuse again. The odor didn’t get that strong after that, perhaps inhaling too much of them. Somehow, I felt that’s it’s not so same as the one I had in Hong Kong few years back, the odor were stronger. Anyway, I am going to Hong Kong in a few weeks time, and I am going to check it out again. =D

My friends Arron and Carmen have a try on it too, and they told me that it’s nothing special, but still tasted not bad or ok-good.
