    The New Chowrasta Market Is Very Cool

    The newly upgraded and opened Chowrasta Market is very cool! Had a quick pass through this century old market today while having my car parked in its new multi-storeys carpark, it’s delighted to see a beautiful addition into this gorgeous George Town.

    Unfortunately, elevator is not working, yet.

    Unfortunately, most of the vendors are still having their stalls by the road instead of moving in, but I am pretty sure the government will work out a plan to filled up the empty stalls in the wet market.

    A harmonious blend of old and new, with a touch of unique culture.

    If you are in Penang during this Chinese New Year season, you have to visit the Chowrasta Market and the surroundings to experience the happenings festive shoppings. It’s the most crowded time of all years and you will be amazed by the items sold and cheering atmosphere.

    Chowrasta Market can be easily reached by Penang Central Area Transit (CAT) free bus.

    Nice Hokkien Prawn Mee At Tanjung Bungah Market Food Court – I love Hokkien Prawn Mee, it’s one of the must-eat food in Penang, the prawn taste food is so yummylicious. You can eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea time or supper.

    Recently, I found a nice Hokkien Prawn Mee (introduced by Hueisean =D) at the Tanjung Bungah Market Food Court. It’s only RM3.00 per bowl Hokkien Prawn Mee and you will get a lot of ingredient like shrimps, meat, and egg. You can add another 30 cents for an extra egg. What’s so best about this Hokkien Prawn Mee is the soup, filled with strong prawn taste, sweet, and spicy, it’s good.

    Compare to the one at Perak Road, I guess both of them has their delicious point, it’s just that you do not have to wait for a long time for this. I had it for breakfast few days ago.

    Hatyai Trip: One-Day Road Trip To Hatyai, Thailand – I went on a one-day trip to Hat Yai, southern Thailand last Sunday. Hat Yai, the southern most part of Thailand is about 2.5 hours from Penang. From Penang to border of Thailand at Bukit Kayu Hitam take about 1.5 hours + and from the custom border to the city of Hat Yai, it takes about an hour.

    Now, almost every year that my family will go to Hat Yai, Thailand because we want to pay a visit to a relative who lives at there. Mom asked me to join them for the road trip, since it’s only a day trip and Thai food is pretty good, why not?

    Hat Yai is a small city that is famous to Malaysian and crowded with Malaysian tourist. It is located at the southern part of Thailand. I don’t really fancy about Hat Yai because it’s not attractive to me. I prefer Bangkok, Phuket, or other Thai’s island. Hat Yai, in my mind is not very authentically Thai, because people at there can actually speaks Mandarin and Hokkien. This is because of the big number of Malaysian Chinese visiting the city and the Thai learned up the language so that they can communicate in business, and food.

    Nevertheless, Hat Yai still have a sense of Thai with its architecture, people and food. However, you can’t really see tall building in the city. There’s not much attractions for you to visit, it’s only eat, shop and pray. Shop at Central departmental store, Lee Garden Plaza, or at the big market for some cheap bargain. Pray at Chinese Buddhist temple, or Thai’s Buddhist temple. As for eat, it’s Thai food, some travel to Songkhla seaside area for seafood, it’s about 40 minutes away from Hat Yai city.

    Checking out the famous shopping market where you can find clothing, bags, accessories, food and more. It’s a girl’s shopping heaven here. Most of the vendor can speaks Mandarin and Hokkien.

    Well, what I did there was visit my relatives, window shopping with mom, brought some Thai’s snack, pray at the Chinese temple, and eat Thai food. In this one-day trip, eat was the most interesting to me. I went to two cool restaurant – Saban-Nga Restaurant and Log Terrace Restaurant. Both serve good Thai food.


    Tuk-tuk is how you get around Hat Yai area with fare as cheap as 20Baht/person.

    Bangkok Trip: Huai Khwang Night Market (Day 3) – Oops, I missed out a place after eating my dinner at Somboon Seafood Restaurant on the third day of my Bangkok Trip last week. Right after our dinner, we went to tour around the area of Huai Khwang. Walking along Ratchadaphisek, and turned left into Pracharat Bamphen Road when reaches a junction leaded us to a row of night market and stalls located along the road.

    It’s the Huai Khwang night market and wet market area. Unlike night market in town, this one is more cater to the locals around that area, selling clothing, accessories, shoes, and also raw food and vegetables at the wet market. Besides, there’s many exotic sexy clothing because of the presence of night club workers at this area. We toured around this place for an hour before heading back to the hotel. The wet market is where we stopped as it’s boring and smelly. Now I know that they shop for meat and vegetables at night, something different.

    Bangkok Trip: Chatuchak Weekend Market / JJ Market / Jatujak

    Bangkok: Chatuchak Weekend Market / JJ Market / Jatujak (Day 2) – I am sure many people have hear about the Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok. If you haven’t, HOW CAN YOUU??

    Nevermind, if you are first timer, Chatuchak Weekend Market, also known as JJ or Jatujak is a famous weekend market in Bangkok and it’s a MUST-VISIT if you happened to be around Bangkok during the weekend as it’s fully open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

    But what if you are on there on weekdays? Actually there’s still stalls open on weekdays but then it’s not 100% perfect wonderful like on the weekend.

    On my 2nd day of Bangkok trip, a Sunday, I went to the Chatuchak Weekend Market in the morning (I went here before, this is my third time), about 10am Bangkok time. Took a cab to there and it costs us 150Baht withou meter! On our way back was only 98Baht with meter. OMG. If you are near to BTS, you can stop at Mo Chit Station, if you are near to MRT, you can stop at Kamphaengphet Station or Suan Chatuchak (Chatuchak Park). Very convenient to reach there.

    Since we were not near to any MRT or BTS station, we took the cab instead. It was still early at that time, many stalls were only started to open their stalls. I thought Chatuchak opens as early as those wet market in Penang. =D

    As we started touring and shopping, more and more people, tourists, shoppers, locals flocked into the market. Do you know Chatuchak Market is very very very super duper big? There’s many sections, and parts in the market and you can hardly explore every part of the market in one day.


    In case you want to split up with your friends, remember the section number and gather back at there.


    You can find a lot of orange juice in this kind of packaging like this. 20Baht only!

    Although the market is organized into different parts which sells different thing, but then we explored the market randomly without checking out at the map at first, which was so wrong as mom couldn’t find the stuff she wanted. Hahaha.

    Well, in Chatuchak Market, you can find stuff like, furniture, home decor, super cheap clothing, lots of Thai street food, paintings, households, kitchen utensils, stationery, Thai gift, and even pet! There’s a pet section where you can find many pet stalls. Though, I couldn’t find that section, it’s just toooo BIGGGGG.


    Not enough hand to carry your stuff home? You can find many delivery service at there too! I don’t know the price is affordable or not, any of you know the market rate?


    Try the coconut ice cream, it’s nice! You get various topping and cheap too!

    A little tips for you is that wear light at Chatuchak, shorts, singlets, slippers would be best. Don’t bring heavy stuff, travel with a light camera, get yourself a mini fan, handkerchief & FACE TOWEL (Haha, packs of tissue paper will do too). Yes, I think face towel is a good bring as Chatuchak is really very very hot! Perspiration will break out non-stop as you explore around Chatuchak.

    Pork! Siu yok! Sio bak! Shao rou! Didn’t dare to try. Haha.

    Chatuchak Weekend Market is very fun but then dad was not feeling well so we stopped our exploring and shopping in the afternoon. I was so sweaty and sticky at that time and wanted a bath so badly. Though, if there’s chance, I would love to explore the WHOLE Chatuchak Market, it’s just so big! I think I’ve just visited a small part of it. Anyway, I will visit it again, next time, yeah! Want sponsor me? =D

    How to go Chatuchak Weekend Market?

    Chatuchak market is adjacent to the Kamphaengphet station of the MRT Bangkok Metro Blue Line, or about a 5-minute walk from the Mo Chit station of the BTS Skytrain Sukhumvit Line and another MRT station, Suan Chatuchak (Chatuchak Park).

    Driving Through Jalan Pasar, Pulau Tikus – Jalan Pasar is where the Pulau Tikus Wet Market is and it’s get crowded and happenings in the morning. This post showcase a few photos taken a few days back when driving pass this road.


    #2: Fruit seller by  the roadside working on his fruits. An apple a day, keeps the doctors away.

    #3: Roadside car park fee collector from the local municipal council. I think they should implement some sort of electronic payment system because at some times, you will not be able to find the fee collector to pay for your parking and that’s where you get trouble.

    A Morning Walk At Pulau Tikus Market – Pulau Tikus Market is one of the market that’s close to my place and mom is a frequent visitor of that market. On a fine Saturday morning two weeks back, I went there with mom for breakfast and accompany her to buy some stuff. I never know that there’s a hidden hawker stalls located at the back of the market and has a variety of local Penang food.

    It’s not a big one but then, it’s enough to cater daily market visitor and I had Hokkien And Lor Mixed Noodle for breakfast. Simply delicious and good. Then it’s started to rain, which makes eating breakfast chilling and nice. Mom said it’s pretty hot on normal day at there.

    After breakfast, mom wanted to buy some stuff and so I followed along, turned on my camera and put my finger on the shutter button, and started snapping away. It was late morning and there’s stall started to pack up for the day and go home to get some rest after a long morning of work. On the other hand, there’s still people coming in to do some last minute buying of vegetable and meat before lunch time arrives.

    It’d been raining quite a lot in Penang for the past few weeks and it’s still raining much now. Though, in Klang Valley here is quite humid and hot lately.

    If were to compare this to other more famous market like the Chowrasta Market and the Cecil Street Market, the Pulau Tikus Market is indeed smaller in size, but somehow, it’s still serves the local around the area that with you can find almost everything you need at there.

    #1: You will know the place by seeing the name Pusat Penjaja Lebuh Cecil which means Cecil Street’s Food Court.

    Cecil Street Market And Hawker Stalls (Qit Tiao Lor Ban San / 七条路巴刹) － Cecil Street, also known as Qit Tiao Lor in Hokkien or literally means 7th Road is famous for its market and hawker stalls. Many locals love to flock into the market and hawker stall to eat out and hunt for good food as there have a variety of local Penang hawker food to choose from.


    #2: A Hokkien Prawn Noodle stalls which haven’t open yet.

    Cecil Street Markat & Hawker Stalls is one of my favourite place to eat in Penang given that the place is more local-ish to me with 99.9% people eating out are locals and for its great variety of local food. I dislike hawker food stalls like at tourist centric Gurney Drive area and New Lane.

    #5: At the kuih stalls, the owner lady trying to tell the girl how much it is for the kuih.

    Yesterday, I went there with my mom to have lunch, and also to buy some stuff from the market to cook at home. It was about noon time and you can hear many people chattering around with coffee boy shouting here and there loudly to order a drinks for the customers.


    #6: Another hidden and good hokkien prawn noodle stalls. The name is Ah Lai’s Hokkien Prawn Noodle.


    #7: Disabled person trying to earn some living by selling his voices – singing karaoke, which turns out to has a good voice.


    #8: An old lady waiting for … someone, or food.


    #9: Picking dishes which to be eat with porridge.

    Aroma of local food can be inhaled at there. Hokkien dialect is the main language of the hawker food stalls area which can be heard almost everywhere. Everyone was busy chomping their food and talking. I was then busy taking photos around, capturing the image of the locals to share with you guys.

    I’ll show you in other post that what I have eaten yesterday. Porridge with a few dishes, and a bowl of Penang hokkien prawn noodle was my lunch yesterday, which is deliciously good.

  • A Short While At Thursday SS2 Chow Yang Pasar Malam

    I am always in search of pasar malam or simply known as night market in Klang Valley. I have found one on Monday at SS2 around bank area, one on Wednesday which the most famous one at Taman Connaught and recently found another one at SS2, but at Chow Yang restaurant there which is on Thursday night.

    Very easy to find, just search for Jalan SS2/6 on GPS or Google Maps and you can find it.

    I didn’t really plan for this trip as I incidentally found it while driving back home after a movie and I was craving for bubble tea so I went to search for it. I didn’t want to go far for bubble tea as I know the nearest bubble tea to me at that wee hour was the pasar malam.

    The SS2 Chow Yang pasar malam has a variety of stuff for you to shop like street food, fashion clothing, wet market vegetable and meat, and the very bad pirated DVDs and CDs.

    As you know I am a pasar malam fan because I found it quite interesting and happenings. It’s not luxurious stuff which I couldn’t afford, I need not to pick a good attire for it, I can just wear my pajamas to there too. Simple, nice and fun.

    Besides that, pasar malam is always a nice place as I can see people from all walks of life, happy friends and family walking around the happenings night market.

     

    After getting my bubble tea, I went to walk around the pasar malam before heading back. Any nice pasar malam to intro in Klang Valley? =)

     

  • Tuesday Tanjung Bungah Market Pasar Malam (Night Market)

    Tuesday Tanjung Bungah Market Pasar Malam (Night Market) – Pasar malam, also known as night market is my favourite as there have a variety of delicious street snacks to eat and cheap stuff to shop for like clothing, mini electric appliances, accessories and more but the most important, is the food. Unlike in China, night market doesn’t station at a place every night. Every night is at different places around Penang.

    On Tuesday night, there’s a wet market and food court which turns into a crowded and happenings night market when sun set. Cars started parking by the road side and people of all walk of life flows into the night market to bring a happening atmosphere.

    I do go there occasionally for some light snacks, like crepe cake, hot dog, bubble tea, and local delicious hawker food.

    Frankly, it’s not the best night market in Penang yet as Jelutong Taman Kheng Thean Night Market (Friday) and Farlim Night Market (Wednesday) have even more street food for you to choose. Nevertheless, a night market in the middle of the high end condominium residential area of this Tanjung Bungah bring a sense of local-ness to the high class living. You can see foreign residents enjoying night market too.

    After a day of tiring work, a little walk at the night market with some icy drinks on hand is very relaxing. It get you out of the busy-ness of the city and traffic jam and slow your mind down.
