  • Ipoh: Burps & Giggles – Cafe With Interesting Concept and Feel

Ipoh: Burps & Giggles – Cafe With Interesting Concept and Feel

The old school five foot path, or called Varendah, or in Hokkien – Goh Kha Ki.

Ipoh: Burps & Giggles – Cafe With Interesting Concept and Feel – Let’s go to Ipoh now shall we? It’s getting a trend that old Chinese shophouses in Malaysia are converting into art cafe/restaurant with vintage feeling, or contemporary style. It’s either super modern or go back to the old school way of decoration. Penang has many of them and Ipoh too, has one very cool one – Burps & Giggles located in the old town area.

Let’s go in…. Nice door by the way.
The indoor section, here it’s air conditioned.

It’s actually quite easy to find, located in the old town which is near to those famous Lou Wong, and old school kopitiam. The two tiny shophouses are converted into one not-very-big cafe, in fact it’s kinda cramp in there with many tables and chairs setting up near each other.

The interiors is cool, has a two section where one is semi-open and one is indoor with the kitchen located here. It was a Saturday noon and it’s so crowded when me and lovely Clarice arrived there.

The cafe spanned all the way to the back lane where you still can find some seats outdoor which something I’ve never seen before. Connecting to the back of the building is another cool attraction – Sekeping Kong Heng where there’s kopitiam (coffee house) at the bottom and rusted and modern designed homestay hotel at the above.

The cafe itself is a nice place for photography as it’s vibrant and colourful. It’s not really a good place for long chat as it’s very noisy when it’s full of people; but having a meal at the semi-open area seems more comfortable and got feel than the indoor one.

Open-kitchen, so you might get smelly, or the other way, you can smell the aroma of the food cooking.
Lovely pastry! I want them all please!
    The wall.
Lazy lane, door to the back lane seating.
    The backlane.
    The backlane with seats.
    Well……. to the toilet.
Semi-open area with bar and sofa seating. Lovely isn’t it? There’s tree inside some more!

Let’s talk about food. They offer western food like burger, sandwiches and pastry! Being a very authentic Asian, I am not familiar with western food, I only know about chicken chop and fish and chips. Haha, but of course, I am always ready to try new stuff. =D I think it’d been like a month I’ve visited this place so I’ve forgotten about the food name, so anyway, I’ll let the photo bom your eyes and mind.

Burger, grilled chicken, vegetable, sauce, something something.
Something pastry something with lots of cheese and chicken again.
A cup of earl grey from TWG. Is it true that earl grey taste like your soap?
    Love Clarice and me.

So, yeah. This is it. Some place is meant to be visit once, moreover Ipoh is not my hometown. What I really like is the way, the concept they decorate the place.

Burps & Giggles,95, Jalan Sultan Yussuf, Ipoh, Perak.

    Open 8am-8pm, except Tuesdays.

  • Singapore: Nice Pancake At Hoshino Coffee, Plaza Singapura

Singapore: Nice Pancake At Hoshino Coffee, Plaza Singapura

Singapore: Nice Pancake At Hoshino Coffee, Plaza Singapura – What to do after a tiring walk in the mall? Of course it’s take a break, sit down for a high-tea with some nice beverage and light bites. Mom and I came across of this Hoshino Coffee at new wing of Plaza Singapura and we went to have our feet rest.

The wait was not fancy because it took about 15 minutes for us to get a place. The queue was long and people in the didn’t really seems want to get out of their comfy seat. Anyway, skip the rambling on the queue thingy and let’s get into food.

It’s a Japanese brand cafe serving pancake, some desserts and also pasta too! So wanted to try them all but my stomach was pretty full over the lunch. I ordered their recommended Scuffle Pancake With Chocolate Banana and Softee (another option instead of softee is cream) at S$13.

And then we also ordered a cup of in-house special Hoshino Hot Coffee at S$5.

The coffee, the fragrance very nice, the taste very smooth. Not a very coffee guy I am, but I still like it.
    Nicely presented pancake.

Overall, it was a good resting place for us. The pancake was nice, pretty sweet and the warm pancake serve with softee ice cream and chcolate banana and a little bit of honey was just delicious for me. Yums. By the way, it’s my first time eating such pancake. Haha.

  • Singapore: Ippudo Ramen, Mandarin Gallery

    Singapore: Ippudo Ramen, Mandarin Gallery

    Yeah, the shop front.

Singapore: Ippudo Ramen, Mandarin Gallery – This ramen is a bomb! Not the price, but the taste! It’s better than a lot ramen I had in Kuala Lumpur, or Penang. I don’t think Penang has good ramen, maybe Kuala Lumpur. Located at Mandarin Gallery, Orchard Road is this Ippudo Ramen restaurant. Upon arriving, I already see a long queue outside the restaurant waiting to be seated.

    The queue. So hungry wheyyyyyy.
The interiors, not really a big restaurant.

Well, it took us about like 20 minutes to be seated and we ordered right away. Brother did the ordering for me as he went there a few times. The place is not an ideal for chit-chating as it’s quite noisy and has some music playing on which the it’s not those soft and sentimental music.

I am so sorry for forgetting about the food name, but please allow the pictures speak for it. =)

    Appetizer: Cucumber!
Appetizer 2: Curry toufu with dry noodle. This one is very yummy, it’s curry powder sauce.
The ramen, special soup, with tamago, cha shu pork, garlic, and lard. The soup is simply awesome but it seems like there’s a lot MSG which makes me thirst after that.

Do you like ramen? Come share your favourite place for ramen.

  • Soul Kitchen Trattoria, Muntri Street

    Soul Kitchen Trattoria, Muntri Street

    Located in a little shophouse.

Soul Kitchen Trattoria, Muntri Street – Have been wanting to go to this little trattoria on Muntri Street for a long time and finally, I’ve got a chance! It was last weekend that I went there for lunch with my girlfriend. I have been hearing a lot of good comment about this little Italian restaurant too.

    Vintage style and simple interiors.

It’s not restorante, it’s trattoria. To make it simple, in Italian, it means a very casual restaurant, more like a home-cooked style dining, with a few choices in the menu, very casual, very simple. =D

    Here’s my girl. =D

There’s not much choices, it’s either, pasta, or pizza. There’s also special dish of the day, like Italian salad. During the weekdays, you can even get set lunch with soup, drinks and main course, but on the weekend, it’s all a la carte.

I don’t really know much about Italian. Somehow, the owner of the trattoria gave us recommendations and we followed. It’s one thin crust Chorizo pizza with two sides of topping (peach slices and bacon) and one … ,,, ,,, I’ve forgotten about the name. Err, there’s a bit of bacon again, garlic, thyme which tasted good.

Ok, this is me. How can she has a photo here and not me?

=) Well, suddenly I felt that I was so new to Italian. And all the while, those in the menu of Pizza Hut seems so oriental. Guess I need to learn more about the authentic Italian cuisine. The pasta tasted tasteless for the first feel bite, but after some dig into the bottom, it tasted deliciou. Pizza wise, I like the side with peace slices and cheese, bacon side was a bit sourish on my tastebuds.

Total damage of the day: RM54, with no service charge and government tax. Probably, I will come back again for some other food. The owner is friendly too.

  • Good Pork Noodle 猪肉粉 At SS3 Restoran Kean Fatt

Good Pork Noodle 猪肉粉 At SS3 Restoran Kean Fatt

Good Pork Noodle 猪肉粉 At SS3 Restoran Kean Fatt – My friend CC introduced me to this pork noodle stall located at SS3 Taman Bahagia and I went to try it out this afternoon! Located just at the back of the Taman Bahagia LRT Station, it’s not hard to locate this little kopitiam of Restoran Kean Fatt.

It seems promising when arrived as there’s quite many people waiting for it. “Oh, it’s gonna be a long wait like the 45 minutes pork noodle at SS15”, I thought. Made my order, as usual with my favourite koay teow noodle (local call it hor fun) and I sat down, chat with Hock Sheng who was the company of the day and wait.

10 minutes passed, 15 minutes then, it’s arrived! It looks good with plenty of pork lards (very unhealthy) and a bowl-ful of ingredient. Saliva drops for just looking at it. RM5.80. Soup is rather salty, but it’s still good! Awesome pork made me un-describable. I finished the soup by the way.

Well, it’s better to wait at here than the 45 minutes at SS15. Haha.

  • Best Penang Asam Laksa In Klang Valley @ Asia Cafe, SS15

Best Penang Asam Laksa In Klang Valley @ Asia Cafe, SS15

Best Penang Asam Laksa In Klang Valley @ Asia Cafe, SS15 – Ladies and gentleman, I have found the best Penang Asam Laksa in Klang Valley and it’s located at the famous Asia Cafe at SS15, Subang Jaya!

I am always in search of good Penang-food in Klang Valley, when I craved from Asam Laksa, I usually will go to the Kedah Asam Laksa at Taman Bahagia open-air food court there. Now, this new one at Asia Cafe will probably replace my visit to Taman Bahagia.

Why it’s so good? Because it’s run by the daughter of the famous Air Itam Asam Laksa in Penang! So it’s very authentic. Price is of course higher than Penang, at RM5.00 per bowl. They sell Curry Mee also, but I am more interested in Asam Laksa and the original stall in Penang does not sell Curry Mee.

Taste wise is very good. I finish the soup, but then one imperfection is there’s very little fish in the soup. Too bad.

I won’t abandon Taman Bahagia’s Kedah Asam Laksa, I will visit both as they have different taste. =)

  • Mid-Autumn Lok-Lok At Steve’s

    Mid-Autumn Lok-Lok At Steve’s

Mid-Autumn Lok-Lok At Steve’s – Mid-Autumn Festival is often known as a reunion day for the Chinese, but it’s not as important as Chinese New Year’s Eve, so I did not reunion with my family.

So how did I celebrate Mid-Autumn this year? I actually so-called celebrated it on the eve, means the day before at my friend – Steve’s place. To be exact, it was his uncle’s place. Very simple only, they hired a truck of Lok-lok (fish ball, sausage, meat skew steamboat) and we went to eat. That’s it.

No lanterns because the kids took them all. So, it’s us the 4 ma-lat-lous – Steve, Arvin, Wesley and me talking crap and eat lok lok, and with a bunch of Hakka uncle and aunty that I do not know. First time being in a Hakka-community that I know nothing about this dialect.

Thanks for the invite. I’m getting interested with the Hakka-dialect, anyone teach me? Let’s start with vulgar word first (most language learner start with vulgar word, don’t you think so?). Haha.

  • Nice Brunch @ The Red Beanbag, Publika

Nice Brunch @ The Red Beanbag, Publika

Nice Breakfast @ The Red Beanbag, Publika – Publika! One of my favourite place in the city. It was one fine Sunday morning, almost noon that my family were in town and wanted to eat some cool and nice brunch as it’s pretty late. Then I thought of taking them to check out Publika, at the same time brunch at The Red Beanbag Restaurant as I’ve read that they serve breakfast set.

It was pretty crowded that Sunday morning as we waited about 15 minutes for a table. After being seated, it’s time to order and eat! I ordered myself a Big Breakfast Set (RM20) which comes with a little portion of baked bean, bacon, beef sausage, bread, hash brown and two cute poached egg. Yummy! Everything was fine, just the portion is small to me. Perhaps it’s breakfast set?
Mom and brother ordered the Egg Atlantic (RM17.90) which is a small French toast, topped with smoked salmon, snappy asparagus, mushrooms and pached eggs with a smooth hollandaise sauce. I tried it and I think I favor this more than my order.
Dad want something that has a bigger portion, something that can filled his stomach well and he has got a Fowl Luck (RM25) which is roasted chicken thigh with herbed potatoes, mushrooms, olives & mushroom gravy. Dad is more of a oriental food eater, so this kind of dish was a bit too light for him.
Afterall, it was a good brunch session and will come back another time in the future. =)

  • Uncle Jang Korean Restaurant 닭갈비

    Uncle Jang Korean Restaurant 닭갈비

Uncle Jang Korean Restaurant – Was feeling Korean food last weekend, searched all over the Internet for a decent and affordable Korean food but the list was just too much. I couldn’t narrowed down my choices, and ended I found this Uncle Jang, affordable and authentic Korean food, serving only Dak-Gal Bi.

Was very curious with the food name. I am not really familiar with Korean, Japanese is OK, but not Korean and I am not a fan of Kpop too. Found out that Dak Gal Bi 닭갈비 is BBQ chicken with spice and vegetable, then eat with lettuces and later add on fried rice, ramyun noodle and more. Sounds interesting!

Off we go to Ampang, the little Korean Town to search for it. There’s a branch at Bandar Puteri, Puchong but I insisted to go to the original one that filled with Koreans. =D

There’s only Dak-Galbi at there. Minimum order is two set, non-spicy (RM19) and spicy (RM22), You can mix it up to become mild. Then you can top-up fried rice or noodle and other (RM6) to eat with it. Else, it’s all chicken and vegetable.

Sit down and wait for the people to cook for you. The taste is OK-spicy to me. Not super spicy, just good and you get only 2 ban chan – some kim chi and onion. After eating about 2/3 of the chicken, you can ask the rice to be served. The person will again fried the rice in front of you with the ingredient left on the hot plate.

Taste? Good, don’t really like wrapping with lettuce, but eating with rice or noodle is awesome! BUT! 2 set for 2 of us is just so so much! I think it can serve about 3-4 people!

Satisfied, good service and no service charge. I will come back again in the future.

  • PIK NIK Food & Gathering With Primary School Friend

PIK NIK Food & Gathering With Primary School Friend

PIK NIK Food & Gathering With Primary School Friend – It’d been a while that I see and meet my primary school’s friend. After studying in Chung Ling High School, it seems like I was lost in contact with most of them. All the while I was like mixing with high school friends, only when Facebook arrives on the web, we started to communicate again. Well, it’s nice to have some nice primary school mate who organises some gathering session.

Well, thanks Joanne for organising that recent gathering session at PIK NIK when I was in Penang few weeks ago. I was pretty excited for that as I haven’t been meeting for a long long time. In fact, I did forget about a few girls in the invitation list, hehehe, but not now. Now I’ve remember all of you! No worry.

It was dinner, it was gathering, it was photo session, it was Zenga session, it was just joking around, it was reunion. Funny that I didn’t know what to talk at first, was shy at the girls, nothing much with the boys as they were high school mate. But crap and bullshits coming out of mouth after some warm up of “Hello” here and there. Laughter started to break the silence. HAHAHA.

How about food? Not low price, but looks good! Should have tried out the smoked salmon waffle. I ordered a new food in the menu – Spicy Kimchi Spaghetti and seriously…. It’s HOT AND SPICY! But with my spicy tongue, it’s still acceptable.

    Spicy Kimchie Spaghetti with sausages.

Chicken Waffle Burger. Looks yummy and very worth with that portion.

Smoked Salmon Waffle – Yums! Very good.

    Bacon Waffle.

Food presentation does indeed looks pretty at there. Forgot to mention, the owner behind this little cafe is a Graphic Designer! That’s why you will see very irregular seatings and fancy graphical artwork around the cafe. Cool place to chill, perhaps in the afternoon. It gets pretty noisy at night. =D

Photos of some Zenga session and group shot with them…
