Sunset: Anjung Indah, Balik Pulau, Penang

Sunset: Anjung Indah, Balik Pulau, Penang – Not a great sunset it was, at Anjung Indah, Balik Pulau. This sunset watching place is easy to find as it’s halfway when you are on the way to Balik Pulau through Paya Terubong. It’s the mid-hill level where it’s very happenings during durian season in mid-year. There’s chair around and you can get a good view of the sun setting in the Straits of Malacca here.

Unfortunately, the haze was the down factor for the sunset. Anyway, it was fun checking this out and I will be back with my longer telephoto lens. The next stop in Balik Pulau, perhaps is Kampung Sungai Burong. =D Don’t really dare to go there now as it’s the Hungry Ghost Month, better get back home early before night falls.

Went To Popular BookFest 2012 @ KL Convention Centre

Went To Popular BookFest 2012 @ KL Convention Centre – The eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, not surprisingly, the road in Petaling Jaya was so smooth today, LDP was so nice to drive on. I didn’t drive in to the city centre despite the smooth traffic, I am just stingy to pay for the parking and fuel. I took the LRT, to save fuel and the environment.

Seems like it’s a holiday for those foreign labour worker, they came out in group and ride the LRT together. I don’t really have good feeling for them. Anyway, cut the crap, I went to Popular BookFest 2012 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today and it’s my first time going there. There’s so many people at there, kids and youngster mostly and also lots of parents! It’s very crowded at there.

I was pretty excited about it, but my excitement turned into disappointment when I saw the big banner of ‘Ticket Counter’, then ‘RM2.50/entry’. I was like ‘What?! Why do we have to pay for books fair?!’. PIKOM PC Fair is free, why couldn’t you? Well, since I was there already, RM2.50 is not really a lot, so I just paid for it and went in. Got a wrist tag as entrance and a guide book filled with advertisement.

It’s an International books fair, but most of them are Chinese books from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. I was hoping to look for some design inspiration book from Taiwan and Hong Kong, unfortunately I couldn’t found any. Instead, bought a self-improvement book – 心理专家的说话技巧. Sounds interesting. There’s design book on sale at very low price, but I didn’t get them because it’s quite old.

I was at the hall for quite a long time, not because there’s too many books, but is because I was finding design books hardly. Checked out the stationery section too, not bad, tech accessories are on sale, bought charger for my phone as I’ve lost mine.

Went to Kinokuniya after that and I can tell you that Kinokuniya is still the best! Don’t think I will return to the BookFest next year.

Hong Kong: Awesome Night View From The Peak

Hong Kong: Awesome Night View From The Peak – Something that I’ve stopped posting for quite some times and that’s my trip to China – Hong Kong last year. Suddenly remembered that I still have quite many thing about my travel to China to share, so I quickly sit in front of my computer and start looking for photos before I forget about it.

One of the nice experience in Hong Kong was heading to The Peak at night to check out the Hong Kong night view. I tell you, queuing up for the tram at night is a disaster, it could take you more than an hour for it as it’s a long queue, everyday! You can take the bus, if you know how to, or like us, we took the haggling cab waiting by the roadside. The cab charges 4 of us for HK$40 which I think pretty reasonable after some negotiation, as it brings us all the way up, and cutting all the long queue.

The temperature up there was superb, chilly, windy, cold. It’s very happenings up there, lots of people were taking photos of the spectacular view of Hong Kong from top. It’s just so awesome. At 8pm every night, there’s the light show, it’s weird that you see the light but you can’t hear any music like you can hear at the Avenue Of Star. Nevertheless, it’s worth to visit The Peak at night. I’ve been there in the morning before.

Sunrise: Teluk Tempoyak @ Batu Maung, Penang

Sunrise: Teluk Tempoyak @ Batu Maung, Penang – Checking out sunrise/sunset is one of my favourite thing to do now. The moment seeing the sun rises from the horizon, sun ray penetrating the dark sky is like greeting you of a coming new day, the feeling is just awesome. However, it’s not easy to wake up early for me. HAHA. Anyway, let’s check out some sunrise that I went watching at Teluk Tempoyak, a fishing village at Batu Maung, Penang few weeks back.

Many friends told me that Teluk Tempoyak has the best sunrise in Penang, with the view of second Penang Bridge at the background and with clear blue sky, it’s even prettier. It was far from my place, took about 30 minutes to reach there. The fishing village was quiet in the morning. I was afraid that no sunrise can be seen because of the strong haze present on that morning. I waited anxiously with my girlfriend Hueisean for the sunrise.

The haze looks like fog in picture and it makes me feels like Hangzhou, China. =D

The place is a mix of peaceful nature and a bit of messiness. One side, you can see green hill and hear the sound of the wave hitting the shore, another side you can see the construction of Second Penang Bridge. It was just two of us at the shore waiting for sunrise, we waited not long, about 7.25am, we saw the little round sun up in the air. Although there’s no clear blue sky, the sighting was cool with a red round sun blending with the view of Second Penang Bridge. Awesome.

Just sad that it’s not a clear blue sky morning. If I’ve got omph next time, I’ll come back again, it’s pretty far to me. Haha. After the sunrise, we went for breakfast at Church Street.

Malacca: Walking Around Chinatown

Malacca: Walking Around Chinatown – It was a sunny afternoon after eating some Cendol and Laksa at the always-crowded Jonker88 Cafe. We strolled around the Chinatown area, which also known as the area around Jonker Walk (Jalan Hang Jebat). This place is very similar to Penang, the old-school electic straits shophouses and the street are almost the same. It’s just that the street in Malacca is narrower and the number of these shophouses are less than in Penang.

One thing I like about Malacca is that they truly develop this heritage part of the city into a living museum and tourist area. It’s so tourist concentrated with souvenir shops, cafe, restaurant and guesthouse all around this place. I like walking around the heritage area, it’s like bring me back in time.

Jalan Tukang Emas and Jalan Tukang Besi are full of guesthouses.

Inside Cheng Ho Tea House & Museum. Ground level is free of charge and one have to pay RM10 to visit the upper level.

The No. 8 Heeren Street is a museum located on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, also known as Heeren Street is currently number 1 to-do in Malacca according to TripAdvisor. Unfortunately, it was closed when we were there. I’ve no idea what is it about but curious.

Malacca: Nadeje Cafe Mille Crepe Cake
Malacca: Nadeje Cafe Crepe Cake – There’s one thing that is very famous in Malacca, not the Chicken Rice Ball, not the Cendul, not a typical local food but it’s a kind of desserts, it’s layered mille crepe cake (thousand layer cake 千层蛋糕). Malacca must be familiar with this name – Nadeje, a famous cafe that makes good crepe cake and has a variety of flavours of them.

Every one was talking about it previously on Facebook, on Twitter and so here I am to check it out the place and of course, the crepe cake. There’s 3 outlets in Malacca, one in Melaka Raya, one in Dataran Pahlawan and the latest is at Jaya 99. We went to the most original outlet and that’s at Melaka Raya. It was 5.30pm and not surprise, people were waiting outside to be seated. It’s full house! We waited for like 20 minutes only then we got place to sit.

The interior decoration of the cafe is pretty cool and in a sense of contemporary design.

Looking at the menu, there’s many food for you to eat like pasta, chicken chops and more, but our main purpose of the visit was the crepe cakes! We ordered the crepe cake first at the counter upon entering and it costs RM9.50/slice. There’s many choices for you to pick and we picked 4 to try out. They are:
- Mango Crepe Cake
- Tiramisu Crepe Cake
- Chocolate Crepe Cake
- Original Crepe Cake
They all looked very pretty. The first few taste of them were good, they were sweet, but not overly sweet, and a strong essence of milk can be felt on our taste bud. It was nice, but eating more of them started to make me feel bored of it, it’s just too much of milk. Maybe, maybe it’s not really my favourite thing, or maybe it’s just too much, but I just felt enough of it after eating half. Some says it’s over-rated, some says it’s good,well, I’ll say, it’s good, BUT, it’s my first time eating crepe cake, so I can’t judge whether it’s the best or not. What do you think?

One more thing, original and chocolate are awesome.

Bukit Mertajam Duck Egg Char Koay Teow

(BM) Bukit Mertajam Duck Egg Char Koay Teow – Bukit Mertajam is famous for duck egg char koay teow, yes or no? That’s what my girlfriend told me. George Town also has duck egg char koay teow, just frying with duck egg is top-up request, where as in Bukit Mertajam, you only get a choice of egg and that’s duck egg. Duck egg makes your char koay teow taste better.

There’s one good one in Bukit Mertajam that used to locate on the roadside of Jalan Kulim has now moved to a new place, also on Jalan Kulim, but to be exact, is at Kampung Baru, in a coffee shop.

I was having hard time looking for it because there’s not much people posted it on the Internet or Facebook. My girlfriend asked around her friends and finally we found the place.

At RM4.50 a plate with a deep fried egg omelete. It’s good in the sense of different with others that I’d in George Town. The koay teow is darker because of different soy sauce used and best of all, lots of lards (not healthy though)! The deep fried egg omelette is compliment to the koay teow and it’s a must add-on when you order a plate of this. If the koay teow can be dryer than it will be best.

Opens only at night, after 8pm.

Malacca: Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle @ Jalan Bachang

Malacca: Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle @ Jalan Bachang – On my recent visit to Malacca, I have found a nice eatery outlet and that is this Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodle shop at Jalan Bachang. It was introduced by a local Malaccan friend and he brought us here to try out. Malacca is always famous for Chicken Rice, Laksa, Cendol but this is something new to me.

Although it’s new to me, it has more than 30 years of history in Malacca and serves Taiwanese style beef noodle, pork rib noodle, and more of Taiwanese-style noodle. It’s something very special. Normally we only get to eat them in Taiwanese restaurant, but this one is located in a local-style kopitiam (coffee shop).

It’s famous for Beef Noodle, you can choose either soup base, or dry base. Since it’s famous, I’ve ordered a dry one and it looks and tastes good! I’ve never been to Taiwan but I’ve been to a lot Taiwanese restaurant, I’ve got to say that this one is better. It’s spicy, the beef is soft and tender, and the thick flat noodle is very springy. Yums. Best of all, it’s only RM4.50, so much cheaper than those in Taiwanese restaurant in the mall.

Ignore the food presentation, it might not looks good, but it’s nice.

Pork rib noodle @ RM4.20. A little soup with a few pieces of grilled pork rib. This one is not a spicy, the soup tasted a bit sweet and salty. Nice too.

Zhajiangmian 炸酱面 @ RM4.20. Fried minced meat sauce noodles, didn’t try this, so I can’t comment on this.

Little Min tagged along with us, she’s my friend, Jia Hui’s cousin. Cute right? Very talkative.

Well, the lunch was simply awesome, but the portion seems to be a little. You can order some side dish like beef soup, pork ribs and more to eat along. If there’s a chance, I wanna come back for it again.

Malacca: Happening Night @ Geographer Cafe, Jonker Walk

Malacca: Happenings Night @ Geographer Cafe, Jonker Walk – Every Friday and Saturday night, this street – Jalan Hang Jebat, or widely known as Jonker Walk came alive with big crowds of people walking along the street with stalls selling food, souvenir, clothing as well as pub, cafe decorated with many antiques.

This is the best part of Malacca and always very happenings during the weekend’s night. Shopping and street food were not our main activity that night as we had filled our stomach with Satay Celup. So, we chilled out at the Geographer Cafe, together with some live band and beer.

Geographer Cafe is one of the most happenings pub / cafe along Jonker Walk, there’s another one located right across the street. Any of these will make you stay until midnight with nice music, and crapping with friends. RM41 for a jug of Carlsberg Draught, what do you think?

The night was simple yet, fun. It’s just a relaxing night and talking around with friends, fostering relationship and getting to know more about each other. Live band was OK, playing with oldies song that some I’ve heard before.

The whole street turned into a trash street after midnight. At about 1.30am, we went back home. The place was quiet then. By the way, you can find various cocktails and food too at this Geographer Cafe.
