Hat Yai Travel: Weekend Roadtrip to Hat Yai from Penang

It’s been a long time I’ve never been to Hat Yai, Thailand already, very very very long time. I hardly have the memory in my mind. I know my parents always bring me to Hat Yai when I was small but my real Hat Yai trip would be this time which happened two weeks ago on the weekend.

Hat Yai located on the southern part of Thailand and it’s just right across the border of the northern part of Malaysia. So they’re connected, and dad drove all the way there, for like 2 hours. It’s shorter than going to Kuala Lumpur from my Penang.

Dad didn’t bring the Touch N Go card so have to go back to the ancient way of paying toll which is queue for ticket and pay by cash. It’s smooth smooth all the way, no traffic jam or anything, passed by a lot of padi field which usually don’t get to see when traveling north and the rest houses are not so pretty. Hehe.

The road trip was good, I slept all the way, it’s so sleepy when sitting in the car for a long time and nothing to do. Didn’t even bother to listen to the music, sleeping is good for pasting time.

We then arrived at place called Changloon, no idea where the place is, but I only know the name and at there, we were already very close to the Thai border.

This is the place where we stopped by for a coffee break, toilet break, money changing and the purchase of insurance for entering the Thai.

    IMG_3742 by nicholaschan.

I didn’t have toilet feel or anything, so I just wait my dad to settle the car insurance thing. It’s like around RM14 per car for entering Thai and a car can stay in Thailand for 14 days, after that need to come out and renew again.

Then back to car and drive for like 10 minutes and we arrived the border where the immigration buildings of the two countries are.

    IMG_3763 by nicholaschan.

After passing the Malaysian custom, we need to park our car and got out to go to chop our passport. I waited so long at the queue for like half an hour, very very very slow Thai officer. I was like OMG and the line was so long already.

Mom told me to place RM1 note or 10Baht inside the passport when passing it to the officer. I didn’t know about this because the place didn’t have any sign for us to pay 10Baht for going into Thai, I think this is tips for them.

After the long long wait at the immigration, finally I got cleared and got into Thailand. Mobile phone still showing Malaysian mobile at that time and after a while it only changed to Thai roaming mobile.

It’s not Hat Yai yet, it’s only I-don’t-know-what-it’s-called after the border. I still have to sit in the car for another 45 minutes to reach the city of Hat Yai.

There’s no high rise building but you will see building almost the same height at like 7-10 floors and there’s the city. After a long hour car ride, we arrived in Hat Yai, the city. We went to lunch first only then to look for the hotel. We didn’t have any hotel booking in advance which made us encountered a little problem when looking for hotel.

Dad dropped grandma at a relative’s house, only we went to look for hotel. We actually wanted to go for New Season Hotel, but then it’s fulled. Then walked down a few blocks to May Flower Hotel, it’s full again, in the end went to Novotel Central Hotel. Mom doesn’t really like that hotel because she said the toilet is not very clean. They like New Season Hotel more.

    IMG_3786 by nicholaschan.

Now we only know that so many Malaysian like to come to Hat Yai on the weekend and we need to book the hotel in advance.

Hat Yai is much alike like other place in Thailand, like Phuket and Bangkok, they all look the same with many cables and not so pretty building and same Thai architecture.

After we parked the car at the hotel carpark, checked in, dropped all our luggage in the hotel room, we went out to walk! Dad went to massage, mom went to shopping, I went to walkaround. Stay tune!

  • Day 1 : Night Bazaar

We arrived at Chiang Mai around 7pm. We were actually plan to visit Doi Suthep Temple on the first day, but too late already. So the tour company’s van drive us to the hotel.

We stayed at Suriwongse Hotel, a hotel that locate in the middle of a tourist spot – the Night Bazaar. We see a lot of people there, tourist especially, ang mo a lot. Great we were staying at that hotel, but the room sucks, never mind, we changed to a better room the next day.

    105_5957

After dinner, we walk down the street for shopping at the Night Bazaar or better known by us Pasar Malam/Night Market. I see those Chiang Mai people, wearing traditionals cloth (some) and carrying their baby on their bags, surprisingly their baby so guai, doesn’t scream and cry for milk, haha. People like my mom pity them sometimes will just buy some stuff from them.

    105_5960

See she look so happy when we bought something from her. My mom bought the silver bracelets for 100baht.

    105_5970

We walk down the street, a lot of stores there selling imitation shirts, shoes, shorts, believe to be handmade products, souvenirs, pirated cd/dvds and many many more things.

    105_5961

There sell a lot of this lamps. I also don’t know why, maybe the material there is cheap. Some looks nice.

    105_5975

Hmm, there is like our Batu Ferringhi where you can find a lot of cheap DVDs and CDs. No point for me to get it there as I can always get it here. Good for ang mos.

    105_5974

This is kinda cute, there is actually teddy bear in it. As decoration purpose, will look nice if put in a girl’s room. No girl in my family. So no buy. Mom also don’t want. Hehe.

    105_5978

This is one of the stalls set up by the roadside. The tour guide told us that the pasar malam/night market will be on every night, not like Chatuchak at Bangkok which only have on weekends. Shop till you drops.

    105_5962

This is a place where the seller set up stores, like a market like that. Got a lot of ladies’ shirt, handmade flower soap, massage and more. I and mom went to shopping while my dad went to Foot Massage, only 60baht/half hour. Cheap hor?

    105_5981

I came to this place, also call night bazaar, but the things there not interesting. You can find some scary things there for sale, like this :

    105_5986

I wonder who will ever buy this doll.

    105_5984

But they do have pro artist that draw very nice drawings, just almost same as the photos, background, everything. Look almost the same 90% same as the original photo. Envy, respect.

    105_5982

    See?

Stay tune for Day 2 of my Chiang Mai trip.

  • Day 1 : Suvarnabhumi Bangkok Airport

I am going to spread my 3 days travel experience into several post for more easy reading pleasure and faster loading time. Back to school, and busy sharing my travel things with classmates and friends.

I took budget airline Air Asia to Chiang Mai, but it was not a direct flight. Dad bought tickets online for Penang to Bangkok, then another tickets from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.

    105_5859

Now I am getting a little phobia on taking flight, I do enjoy it journey but National Geographic Channel’s Air Crash Investigation causes the flight phobia on me. Haha. My favorite part on a plane is when the plane take off. Scariest part is when it lands.

    105_5864

It was raining when we landed at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. It did not bother us as we stay in the airport until the next flight.

    105_5869

So, most probably is because that we took the budget airline, so we don’t get to go to the arriving terminal on those bridges that stick to the plane. Instead, we have to walk down the stairs from the plane and take a short bus ride to the arriving terminal.

    105_5919

It was about 5 hours free time until our next flight and we can’t check in so early also. Have lunch there at the airport and my dad drink a couple of beer, he said beer in Thailand is cheap. I walk around and look for Wifi access for Twittering, but no luck, all need to pay.

    105_5910

Dad drink beer, I eat ice cream. I loves the ice cream (100baht) from Cafe Nero by Black Canyon Coffee (Claim to be largest coffee chain store in Thailand).

    105_5917

I found a lot of little machine at the airport, actually they are for International phone calls and Internet access. I paid 50baht and wrote something for my blog.

    105_5914

Air Asia check in counter is always at row E, last time I went to Bangkok also at row E. So I went to Row E.

    105_5926

Queue up for bags check in and getting our boarding pass. We just need to show our passports and they will give us the boarding pass. So, the paper that I’ve printed out about the AirAsia one was useless.

    105_5933

It’s time for some camwhoring. Getting myself to the waiting hall.

    105_5936

The airport is so big and we have to take these moving walkways a few time until we reach the terminal. It’s time to fly to Chiang Mai with Air Asia, again.

  • Back From Chiang Mai

    105_6410 copy

  • Hard to Find Free WiFi at Chiang Mai

Stupid Starbucks Coffee here, because they don’t offer free Wifi, instead you have to pay 90baht/rm9 for 1 hour usage. So that sucks. It’s not exactly no free wifi here, I do found one just now on the Internet, near my hotel, later go check it out.

Currently blogging from Central Airport Plaza, paid 10baht/rm1 for 15 minutes usage, which is better than at the airport there. Will be back home tomorrow, took LOTS of photos lo. My 1GB SD Card now can take 50 more photos then full already, took about 600 photos, incude some video clips. =)

Lalala, got to go, stay tune to my blog for photos from Chiang Mai.

  • At Bangkok Airpoort
