Pan Mee At Hou Mei Yuen, Bukit Jambul

Pan Mee At Hou Mei Yuen, Bukit Jambul – Pan Mee, although is not one of Penang’s famous food, but then it’s still loved by the Penangite. You can find Pan Mee at every state of Malaysia, every where have their own style. Recently, I went to one at Bukit Jambul to eat Pan Mee, it’s located at one of the shoplot below the low cost flat.

Pan Mee At Hou Mei Yuen, Bukit Jambul

I’ve been hearing about this Pan Mee for some times already and now finally I’ve a chance to try it out. I believe people around this area will know about this Pan Mee place.

Pan Mee At Hou Mei Yuen, Bukit Jambul

There are two choices of Pan Mee for you to choose, it’s either the thick flat pan mee or the small one, then you can choose either it’s dry-based or soup-based. I wanted to order the thick pan mee but it’s finished already. The dry one was good filled with soy sauce, minced meat, ikan bilis and a separate bowl of soup with fish ball and vegetable. I like the dry one.

Pan Mee At Hou Mei Yuen, Bukit Jambul

The soup one is basically the same thing, just with the soup and without the soy sauce. The taste is light and clear, add in some chili to make it taste better in my opinion. After all, I still prefer the dry one.

Additionally, I ordered a bowl of fish ball soup. Yums!

Besides that, they have a few dim sum for you to pick. There’s a guy holding a tray of dim sums going around for you to pick. I took a plate of siu mai as appetizer.

  • Heng Heng Tomyam Mee, Bukit Mertajam

Heng Heng Tomyam Mee, Bukit Mertajam

Heng Heng Tomyam Mee, Bukit Mertajam

Heng Heng Tomyam Mee, Bukit Mertajam – Seberang Perai really has a lot of good food. Raja Uda, Butterworth has good tomyam mee, but at Bukit Mertajam, there too, has a good tomyam mee stall named Heng Heng.

Heng Heng Tomyam Mee, Bukit Mertajam

Heng Heng does not only sells tomyam noodle, but they do sell pork noodle, as well as seafood porridge. But the famous one is the pork noodle and tomyam noodle.

Heng Heng Tomyam Mee, Bukit Mertajam

There’s quite a number of ingredient for you to pick for your serving. The tomyam is very thick, sour and spicy a bit but it’s good. Try it with some minced meat, mantis prawn and perhaps some abalone slices, it will be nice as it’s me and my girlfriend’s favourite. One thing that it’s not so ‘awesome’ is the price. The bowl that I ate was RM10. Pretty expensive right? Anyway, it’s a good one. Do check it out.

  • A Evening Walk Along Gurney Drive On Festive Season

A Evening Walk Along Gurney Drive On Festive Season – It’s Hari Raya, Day 2. Penang has became a very congested little island on this festive season with Malaysian from other states flocking into the UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town. Traffic congestion are everywhere in Penang.

To prevent getting trap and being frustrated in the traffic congestion, one of the activity I did to kill time was strolling along Gurney Drive, a quick walk for a little sweaty exercise with my parents. It was some unusual activity, normally I would just jog, but it was just walking with a faster pace, enjoying the breeze and laughing at those who were stuck in the traffic jam. HAHA.

Gurney Drive has more people than normal day as it’s a public holiday. Unfortunately, it’s low tide and a huge part of it revealed the ugly muddy shore. Seriously, I am quite sad to see this unhappy scene. It’s like the shores are crying. Something need to be done, environment expert, state government, just turn it into a park, expand the walkway, or whatever way to bring back the lovely shore.

The other end of Gurney Drive still looks good. It’s still looks good and kids picking up seashell can be seen at there. It was a dull and cloudy day, a nice day out for walking, but not so nice for photography.

On the way back, detoured to Gurney Paragon for a little desserts and Gurney Drive hawker for some nice soya milk, as well as fresh cockles (si hum) lok-lok. What a nice night.

Happy Hari Raya, day 2 and enjoy the kotai in your area. Happy hungry ghost month too!

One more thing, did I mention I met local artist and TV host – Miau Miau Lin Jing Miao (苗苗 林静苗)? =)

  • Bukit Mertajam Duck Egg Char Koay Teow

Bukit Mertajam Duck Egg Char Koay Teow

Bukit Mertajam Duck Egg Char Koay Teow

(BM) Bukit Mertajam Duck Egg Char Koay Teow – Bukit Mertajam is famous for duck egg char koay teow, yes or no? That’s what my girlfriend told me. George Town also has duck egg char koay teow, just frying with duck egg is top-up request, where as in Bukit Mertajam, you only get a choice of egg and that’s duck egg. Duck egg makes your char koay teow taste better.

There’s one good one in Bukit Mertajam that used to locate on the roadside of Jalan Kulim has now moved to a new place, also on Jalan Kulim, but to be exact, is at Kampung Baru, in a coffee shop.

Bukit Mertajam Duck Egg Char Koay Teow

I was having hard time looking for it because there’s not much people posted it on the Internet or Facebook. My girlfriend asked around her friends and finally we found the place.

Bukit Mertajam Duck Egg Char Koay Teow

At RM4.50 a plate with a deep fried egg omelete. It’s good in the sense of different with others that I’d in George Town. The koay teow is darker because of different soy sauce used and best of all, lots of lards (not healthy though)! The deep fried egg omelette is compliment to the koay teow and it’s a must add-on when you order a plate of this. If the koay teow can be dryer than it will be best.

Opens only at night, after 8pm.

  • New Breakfast Place At Church Street With Toast & Egg

New Breakfast Place At Church Street With Toast & Egg – Besides Toh Soon Cafe, I have recently found another breakfast place in George Town, Penang and that’s at Eng Loh Coffee Shop, Church Streeet. This little coffee shop located under the classic and still running Eng Loh Hotel. It’s a kopitiam serving a few hawker food like Koay Teow Thng, Wan Tan Mee, fried bee hoon as well as a variety of toast bread.

I always wanted to look for good breakfast but I kinda hard to wake up early in the morning. While I was still in Penang few weeks back, I got up early to check out the sunset with Hueisean dear, then after that we headed to Church Street for this breakfast.

I saw people who was eating the Wan Tan Mee and I was so tempted to order one too, but ended with toast and western breakfast set. Haha. In the in-house coffee shop menu, you will see a variety of toast for you to choose, it’s hard to try them all, the best is get a lot of people then order all of them. =D It’s pretty interesting.

I ordered a normal butter toast with half boiled egg. But with kaya paste, it will be better.

Western breakfast set, not nice in my opinion.

Anyway, I will come back again for other stuff, it’s a good place for morning breakfast in George Town. Price is OK-nice too.

  • 888 Hokkien Mee @ Lebuh Presgrave Dinner

888 Hokkien Mee @ Lebuh Presgrave Dinner

888 Hokkien Mee @ Lebuh Presgrave Dinner – It was the night before London Olympic 2012 Opening Ceremony, a few friends gathered around at Presgrave Street or more likely known as Sar Tiao Lor (3rd Road) for local to eat a hot bowl of Hokkien Prawn Noodle with Roasted Pork (Siu Yok/Sio Bak) and icy ice kacang with ice cream topping.

888 Hokkien Mee @ Lebuh Presgrave Dinner

It’d been a while that I’ve visited this Hokkien Mee stall in Penang. It’s one of my favourite place for Hokkien Prawn Mee, especially for the top up of roasted pork (sio bak/siu yok). The soup has a strong aroma of shrimp essense and I like it with springy instant noodle. Personally, just put a little bit of chili paste will do, too much will ruin the taste of the soup. It costed me RM4.50, reasonable.

888 Hokkien Mee @ Lebuh Presgrave Dinner

An addition bowl of icy ice kacang with vanila ice cream topping complements to the delicious bowl of hokkien mee. I’ve forgotten about the price, roughly RM2+. Very cheap only.

    Arron and Simon Cheong.

After dinner, we went to CC’s house for KTV until midnight, then went to supper and cyber cafe for 2 round of DoTA (very noob and I don’t really play), then went back to CC’s house for Olympic’s Opening Ceremony. Sorry that I’ve got to say, it was not awesome, except for Mr Bean’s part.

  • Famous Super Hokkien Mee Behind Penang Plaza

Famous Super Hokkien Mee Behind Penang Plaza – This Hokkien Prawn Mee is quite famous among Penangite as it’s often known for waiting long to be served and also sold out very early by 9am +++. Super Hokkien Mee is the name of the store, it’s just a gimmick telling you that it’s ‘SUPER’. Haha.

Located behind of Penang Plaza in a coffee shop called One Corner Cafe on Jalan Bawasah, Super Hokkien Mee started selling early in the morning for breakfast. I went there few days ago with my friends to check out how good it was. We ordered at 8.30am and were told that we have to wait until 9am. That’s fine for us.

Famous Super Hokkien Mee Behind Penang Plaza

Pricing was surprisingly higher at RM4.50 per bowl, just like KL-price. You know, you still can find RM2.50/bowl of Hokkien Prawn Noodle at Cecil Street Market. How about the taste? The soup does indeed taste sweeter with a strong aroma of prawn, probably cooked with lots of prawn shell. Tiny prawn slices can be seen in the soup and unfortunately, boiled egg was not present in the soup.

Overall, it tastes good, but somehow might lazy to wait and wake up early for it again. XD Will try another one that sells out early at Pulau Tikus soon.

  • Lunch @ Midland Kitchen, Campbell Street

Lunch @ Midland Kitchen, Campbell Street

Lunch @ Midland Kitchen, Campbell Street – Life back in Penang Island is really awesome, food exploration is never ending and eating is the main culture here. Penang is truely a food heaven. I just love spending time at my hometown, air is fresher, life is more relaxing and healthier here.

Recently, I went to check out a new Chinese restaurant in the core of George Town @ Campbell Street – Midland Kitchen. If you know about the Midland Restaurant at Midland Park, then you might get some idea of the food serves. It’s opened by the same person who operated Midland Restaurant.

Lunch @ Midland Kitchen, Campbell Street

Located in one of the eclectic styles colonial-style shophouse on Campbell Street, it blends a fusion design in the interiors. The setting is more towards a modern contemporary design, providing a new dining experience in town. What’s special is that this shophouse has 3 levels.

Each floor provide different dining style, the first floor is more towards intimacy dining and there’s a mini bar and the 2nd floor is a private group dining area. It’s pretty cool. Decoration is a bit simple, but the use of furniture makes it cool.

Lunch @ Midland Kitchen, Campbell Street

Now food time! Well, I don’t really know how to describe food but I’ll just make a it short and sweet about the dishes that we have orderd for lunch. First up, Minced Meat Toufu – mild-salty, soft and smooth toufu, taste good.

Lunch @ Midland Kitchen, Campbell Street

Fuyong Omelet was just nice only, not too good compare the one I had before in KL.

Lunch @ Midland Kitchen, Campbell Street

Lor Han Vegetarian Dish – not my type dish. My said it was good.

Lunch @ Midland Kitchen, Campbell Street

The last dish was not really a good one – Steamed Chicken With Chinese Wine, it’s not good because the chicken was too hard, not tender enough.

Anyway, will try some other dishes next time on my next visit. It’s not really awesome, but I’ll give it another opportunity. =D. As for Chinese restaurant, I prefer Tek Sen Restaurant, that’s really suit my taste bud.

  • Nice Hokkien Prawn Mee At Tanjung Bungah Market Food Court

Nice Hokkien Prawn Mee At Tanjung Bungah Market Food Court

Nice Hokkien Prawn Mee At Tanjung Bungah Market Food Court – I love Hokkien Prawn Mee, it’s one of the must-eat food in Penang, the prawn taste food is so yummylicious. You can eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea time or supper.

Nice Hokkien Prawn Mee At Tanjung Bungah Market Food Court
Recently, I found a nice Hokkien Prawn Mee (introduced by Hueisean =D) at the Tanjung Bungah Market Food Court. It’s only RM3.00 per bowl Hokkien Prawn Mee and you will get a lot of ingredient like shrimps, meat, and egg. You can add another 30 cents for an extra egg. What’s so best about this Hokkien Prawn Mee is the soup, filled with strong prawn taste, sweet, and spicy, it’s good.

Nice Hokkien Prawn Mee At Tanjung Bungah Market Food Court

Compare to the one at Perak Road, I guess both of them has their delicious point, it’s just that you do not have to wait for a long time for this. I had it for breakfast few days ago.

  • Kopi C @ China House – Cafe & Gallery In Heritage Shophouse

Kopi C @ China House – Cafe & Gallery In Heritage Shophouse

Kopi C @ China House – Cafe & Gallery In Heritage Shophouse – Penang has many colonial-style shophouses which are very beautiful and retro located in the heart of UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town. Nowadays, many of these shophouses are refurbished and converted into heritage hotel, inn, cafe, gallery and gift shop.

China House is a good use of colonial-style shophouses converted into a shophouse with gallery, cafe, restaurants, retail and a place to chill and relax with your friends. In China House, there’s many different section, one section is the Kopi C (known as Kopi Cine) which serves nice coffee and freshly baked cakes and desserts.

Initially, I was thinking of having a nice afternoon tea at Kopi Cine, Muntri Street, later only found out that it has moved into China House. So I went to search for the China House. It’s located on Beach Street, before the old fire station. The China House is linked together with the shophouse at the back, which reveal a long and narrow interior.

The interior of Kopi C is very retro, blended old Penang’s  decorations with Chinese & Western-style. I ordered their in-house special cake – Tiramisu (RM12/slice) and a slice of Mushroom Quiche (RM8/slice) which is a pie filled with mushroom and onion.

With some soft music, Kopi C is indeed a nice hangout spot in the afternoon, for good cakes, good chat and good environment. Hueisean loves the place a lot, and the Tiramisu too! Besides housing the Kopi C, China House also houses a gallery at the 2nd level, an open space for event, a Chinese restaurant, a courtyard, a reading zone and also a bar with live music at night.
