    A Scary Journey From Krakow – Zakopane – Poprad-Tatry

Eastern Europe Trip // A Scary Journey From Krakow – Zakopane – Poprad-Tatry – It was a crazy night, which I would say began with curiosity, later terrifying and ended with relieving. As this part of journey from Zakopane to Poprad was not well-planned beforehand, or it couldn’t be planned because there’s no prebook transport available from Zakopane, a skiing town south of Poland to Poprad, a mountain town north of Slovakia.

We never thought of the difficulty in crossing the border to reach Poprad. I found a clear way on how to get from Zakopane to Poprad, but then it was really late when we arrived at Zakopane, about 7pm. Zakopane was already a dead town at night, only a few avid skier just arrived and heading to their accommodation. As for us, looking for transport to go to the border – Lysa Polana, then from Lysa Polana, walk to the nearest village and catch a public Slovak bus to Poprad. Direct bus is available, only during daytime, taxi charges 500Zloty if were to drive directly to Poprad, there’s no other way to go to Poprad except from Lysa Polana.

To save as much cost as possible, we bargained with a cab driver, and he agreed on taking us to Lysa Polana for 73 Zloty, he wanted 90 at first. There’s still much excitement by that time, only when we reached the border of Poland and Slovakia, and alighted from the cab, the fear came upon us. It was a bridge that connects both country, with no street lamp. The cab left, and it was just 4 of us, in the middle of nobody, nowhere, and pitch dark, the only light was from the reflection of the moon. I think, that night had the brightest moon ever.

It was weird, it was quiet and it was cold at about -7 degree celcius, on the Tatra mountain. The Internet asked us to walk about 15-30 minutes to the nearest village to catch a local bus, so do the cab also told us the same thing. We walked, walked and walked, 15 minutes passed and there’s still no sign of any village. We started to get worried and scared. “Will we survive the freezing cold in the middle of nowhere?” “Can I call 112 Emergency?”, that’s what raises in my mind.

Hungry, and we had freezing McDonald’s that was bought from Krakow while walking. 3 vehicle passed by us, we jumped, we hailed, yet they did not stop for us. Suddenly out of no where, another vehicle was approaching us, we jumped and waved again and it stopped. It was a bus. Without any hesitation, we quickly boarded and asked if the bus could bring us to Poprad. “4.5Euro per person”, the bus driver said. That’s fine, in fact that’s the bus we were looking for! Thank god, and thank you bus. Just the question was, “Where did the bus came from?”. We passed by a village, which I think it could take us another 30 minutes of walk to reach there. The information on the Internet was so wrong.

The bus journey took about 45 minutes to reach Poprad, then we felt so relieved when we found the train station. Waited until 11pm and boarded the night sleeper train. Excitement arises as it was my first time on a night sleeper train. Although there’s no view out there, but I could see a sheet of white snow on the track, lovely.

One more thing, please do not do Zakopane – Lysa Polana – Poprad at night. Only do it in day time.

Warsaw: Heading To City From Modlin Airport

Eastern Europe Trip // Warsaw: Heading To City From Modlin Airport – Being a very careful Asian tourist, and trying to save as much bucks as we can (or just trying to be super selfish), I wandered around the airport for a bit of time, trying to scout for the cheapest way to head to the city.

A bunch of cab driver swarmed to us and offer us a ride to the city for about 40Euro for all of us. It’s pretty obvious it’s very expensive, I cannot say they are scamming us, but they were offering us in Euro instead of Polish Zloty, so I guess it’s quite a rip-off. The information lady was very kind to show us the cheapest way, that is a about 15 Zloty per person by bus then via train to the city (Warsaw Central) and I guess the ticket include the public transport in the city Zone 1 for 60 minutes after validation as well. (But actually right, it can be cheaper! Forget about buying the bus ticket and just buy the train ticket because the bus driver didn’t even check the ticket also. Of course it’s illegal. :P)

The journey took about an hour and a half and we have to listen closely to the station announcement because there’s no English and Polish was like so new to me. The scenery along the was quite boring, it’s just like the other side of the world, definitely out of the ‘typical Europe’s expectation’, but it’s just cool getting away to somewhere different from Britain.

  • Hangzhou: 1-Hour Train To Shanghai Hong Qiao Station

Hangzhou: 1-Hour Train To Shanghai Hong Qiao Station

China Trip – Hangzhou: 1-Hour Train To Shanghai Hong Qiao Station 搭快速火车到上海虹桥 (Day 1) – It’s almost 6pm at Hangzhou, I was tired and not feeling very well. I wanted to go to Shanghai, checked in the hostel and sleep so badly. Brother and I went to take our luggage back, checked that everything was still there and we went to buy the train ticket to Shanghai.

Hangzhou: 1-Hour Train To Shanghai Hong Qiao Station

Very stupid thing is that train ticket counter was about 10 minutes walk from the platform. It’s just far away from the boarding platform. There’s super many counter at the ticketing area, but it’s easy to buy at ticket. We need to show our ID document (passport) to buy the ticket, it costs 78Yuan one-way to Shanghai Hong Qiao station. After buying ticket, we realised we only have less than 15 minutes until the train starts moving.

Hangzhou: 1-Hour Train To Shanghai Hong Qiao Station

Hangzhou: 1-Hour Train To Shanghai Hong Qiao Station

I hate that the platform is so far away, and with a 12kg backpack on my bag. We ran. We ran towards the platform as fast as we can, together with the backpack, I was panting away. Phewwwww. What a relief that we still have about 4 minutes before the train started moving. Train in China is very on schedule, they won’t wait for anyone who is late.

The train was pretty cool and was very clean in it. It’s a very long train, with about 15 coaches. We found our seats and rest ourselves. I think I’d a little fever, so I sleep all the way to Shanghai. The train was so smooth and calm as it’s electric train. It’s fast and takes about an hour to reach Shanghai. There’s people selling coffee and food on board too.

We reached Shanghai Hong Qiao Station, which is a train station, and also a domestic airport. I asked brother to take the cab because we did not know how long it takes for MRT to reach our hotel – Blue Mountain Bund Youth Hostel. I couldn’t really feel the outside temperature because we were indoor. The bad thing was, we waited the cab for about 1 hour! It’s a super duper long queue at the cab area. WOW. Cab driver in Shanghai doesn’t really speak English well, it’s better to have the address print in Chinese for him to refer.

Hangzhou: 1-Hour Train To Shanghai Hong Qiao Station
    In Shanghai already, so excited!

Hangzhou: 1-Hour Train To Shanghai Hong Qiao Station

Felt so good after boarding the cab, it takes about half an hour to reach Blue Mountain Bund Youth Hostel on Shaan Xi Nan Lu 陕西南路. Actually, we should have take the Shanghai Metro, it seems faster. We did not do homework about the Metro station and hotel distance so we went for cab which cost us 70RMB.

About the Blue Mountain Bund Youth Hostel, it’s cheap, 130RMB/room but no attached bathroom, it’s troublesome a bit but it’s cold when taking a shit as the bathroom somehow connected to the outdoor balcony! The people at there are very friendly too, most of visitors are young travelers like us, you can mingle around with them and get social. There’s a bar with free Internet usage and free-wifi. Every Wednesday night, there’s a movie night at the bar. Besides, there’s also washing machine and dryer. Room is very small, but I don’t think you will spend many time in room. Opposite the hostel, you will find a convenience store. It’s about 10 minutes walk to famous Nanjing Lu and 15 minutes walk to the nearest Shanghai Metro, Line 2 and Line 3.

Guess what I did after check-in into the hostel? Slept until the next day! I skipped dinner. =D Wasted my first night? Not really, I have plenty of time in Shanghai. I needed to charge up for the coming days.

Bangkok Trip: Talad Rot Fai – Retro Train Night Market – I believe many visitor to Bangkok does not aware of this night market that’s called Talad Rot Fai, included me until I found it on CNNGo website. Talad Rot Fai, also known as Talad Dek Naew or in English – the Train Market is a night market that features retro stuff, antiques, second hand clothing and also a hangout place for Thai’s retro hipster.

“Talad” means market and “Rot Fai” means train in Thai which reflects the venue which is actually an abandoned train warehouse and tracks.

It was kinda hard to communicate with the taxi driver about this place even I showed him a map of the location, many of the taxi drivers are not from Bangkok itself and not really familiar with all of the road in Bangkok. I told him about Kamphaeng Phet MRT Station, somewhere near there then he brought us there. Sucking blood, he charged 250Baht for the trip.

Anyway, forget about the cab driver, he brought us there safe and sound. I was pretty worried it didn’t open or not exist as I couldn’t find much info about it on the Internet. When I saw the light and sound of Thai, I became excited and found many people going in and out of the “Talad Rot Fai” train night market.

Bangkok: Talad Rot Fai - Retro Train Night Market

The Talad Rot Fai is actually located near to Kamphaeng Phet MRT Station, so it’s easier to take the MRT here and then you walk towards west of the station, which is also the way away from Chatuchak Weekend Market.

A little bit history about this train market is that it’s started off 2 years back in 2010. It was just an abandoned warehouse and railway track and Rod’s Antique rented the place to sell antique stuff. Rod’s Antique was actually located near to Chatuchak Weekend Market. Then Rod’s invited many vendors to sell stuff at here for free. When it was free, there’s not much stalls and vendors, but once they started collecting rental, more and more vendors come in. Funny right.

This train market sells a lot of 2nd hand retro stuff, clothing, antique and has many modified Volkswagen van which then turned into a mini vehicle bar playing retro music, offering beer and other beverage. You can find some cool artsy futsy printed tee here as well as some nice retro home decor.

Mom dislike second hand clothing, but those clothing looks as good as new. I find this place quite interesting because it’s a retro theme night market. Many youngster dress up in retro fashion too! What I like the most is the Volkswagen modified van which I feel it’s very cool.

Deep in the warehouse is outlets of different antique shops including Rod’s.

You may also grab a beer and sit at one of the outdoor bistro too. We walked for about 2 hours at there, explored, only then we headed back to the hotel.

Talad Rot Fai / Talak Dek Naew / Train Market is opens on Saturday and Sunday from 5pm. Get there as late as 8pm when all the stalls are out in full force.

To get to the Talad Rot Fai, take the MRT to Kampaeng Phet Station. Get out at exit 3 (Or Tor Gor Market) then cross the road and walk about 450 meters west on Kampaeng Phet Road, away from Chatujak Market. For a map (in Thai) click here.
