Went To Popular BookFest 2012 @ KL Convention Centre

Went To Popular BookFest 2012 @ KL Convention Centre – The eve of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, not surprisingly, the road in Petaling Jaya was so smooth today, LDP was so nice to drive on. I didn’t drive in to the city centre despite the smooth traffic, I am just stingy to pay for the parking and fuel. I took the LRT, to save fuel and the environment.

Seems like it’s a holiday for those foreign labour worker, they came out in group and ride the LRT together. I don’t really have good feeling for them. Anyway, cut the crap, I went to Popular BookFest 2012 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today and it’s my first time going there. There’s so many people at there, kids and youngster mostly and also lots of parents! It’s very crowded at there.

I was pretty excited about it, but my excitement turned into disappointment when I saw the big banner of ‘Ticket Counter’, then ‘RM2.50/entry’. I was like ‘What?! Why do we have to pay for books fair?!’. PIKOM PC Fair is free, why couldn’t you? Well, since I was there already, RM2.50 is not really a lot, so I just paid for it and went in. Got a wrist tag as entrance and a guide book filled with advertisement.

It’s an International books fair, but most of them are Chinese books from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. I was hoping to look for some design inspiration book from Taiwan and Hong Kong, unfortunately I couldn’t found any. Instead, bought a self-improvement book – 心理专家的说话技巧. Sounds interesting. There’s design book on sale at very low price, but I didn’t get them because it’s quite old.

I was at the hall for quite a long time, not because there’s too many books, but is because I was finding design books hardly. Checked out the stationery section too, not bad, tech accessories are on sale, bought charger for my phone as I’ve lost mine.

Went to Kinokuniya after that and I can tell you that Kinokuniya is still the best! Don’t think I will return to the BookFest next year.

  • Back To Big City – Kuala Lumpur

Back To Big City – Kuala Lumpur – 3 weeks of semester break has finally comes to an end. Life in Penang was so awesome with family and friends, as well as good food and good place and I just never felt enough with it. Well, life still has to go on, a new semester will be commencing next week and I have to get my mind back into the “interior design mode”. Lot’s of things are gonna be learned and work too.

Back to my little loft in Kuala Lumpur, to be exact – PJ. Hmm, this little small room is my entertainment, work, sleep place. I spent my whole night with cleaning up my room and watching Matrix Trilogy, and also Internet! So lazy to go out on the first night back here.

Anyway, gonna spend some time updating my blog this few days. =D Stay tuned. Good night everybodehhhh.

  • Wan Tan Mee, Steam Bread & Egg @ Imbi Market (Pasar Bukit Bintang)

Wan Tan Mee, Steam Bread & Egg @ Imbi Market

Wan Tan Mee, Steam Bread & Egg Breakfast @ Imbi MarketKnown to Imbi Market to locals, but officially known as the Pasar Bukit Bintang which is a wet market located stone throw away from Bukit Bintang shopping district. I never know there’s such a nice wet market located in the centre of Kuala Lumpur providing good food and culture. This place gives me a feeling of eating at places like Presgrave Market (5th Road Market) in Penang.

Wan Tan Mee, Steam Bread & Egg @ Imbi Market

Wan Tan Mee, Steam Bread & Egg @ Imbi Market
Original Sisters Crispy Popiah where you can find it almost at any mall in Kuala Lumpur. Previously Taylor’s University has a stall but no idea why it’s closed down now.

I was searching for kaya bread and half-boiled egg for breakfast and found this place on Google. I set up my Waze app GPS from my phone and headed to this place. Upon arriving, I felt good, seeing locals shopping for groceries and many people eating at the food stalls area. This place is fun, this place is so local.

Wan Tan Mee, Steam Bread & Egg @ Imbi Market

Wan Tan Mee, Steam Bread & Egg @ Imbi Market

I was too excited and saw many good food around, having no idea which is the best, I randomly ordered a set of kaya steam bread + half boiled egg, and also a plate of wan tan noodle. I’ve got to say all of them were good too me except the wan tan mee was expensive @ RM5/plate! OMG. Although the noodle is springy and the char siew is sweet and BBQ enough but then it’s kinda expensive. In Penang, you can find similar wan tan mee for RM2.50 at Chowrasta Market!

As for the steam kaya bread, it’s good, but Toh Soon’s Cafe has a better one. Haha. I heard that there’s another stall has good kaya toast (instead of steam) at this market too, I am going to check out next time.

I have a scrumptious breakfast that morning and I will come back again, for other food.

Taiwan Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken @ Pavilion, KL

Taiwan Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken @ Pavilion, KL – Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken is very famous in Taiwan where many people queue for the large fried chicken fillet. Now it has come to Malaysia and there’s two outlet, one at SS15 and another at the basement of Pavilion shopping mall. I always very tempted to try it out, curious that why is it so popular in Taiwan and last week, I bought myself a piece of original large fried chicken.

Taiwan Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken @ Pavilion, KL

Taiwan Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken @ Pavilion, KL

This kinda of large fried chicken is a street snack origin from Taiwan. You can normally find them in pasar malam in Malaysia and it’s not healthy because of the deep fried cooking method. Haha.

Taiwan Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken @ Pavilion, KL

Taiwan Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken @ Pavilion, KL

It costs RM7.90 for a piece of Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken, RM1 – RM2 more than those typical large fried chicken at pasar malam. You can also ask for the level of spiciness. I ordered a mid-spicy level one. What’s so special about it is it’s really very huge, they guarantee the fried chicken fillet is 30cm long and seriously, it’s that big. First few bites is pretty good, but after that I felt I have enough of it, it’s too big and I felt full after eating half of it. Hahaha. One thing, it takes a while for your fried chicken to be ready as they fried upon your order. You get a drinks with the set @ RM9.65 (only ice lemon tea available).

If there’s a chance, I’m gonna try the original one in Taiwan Shihlin. Anyway, I prefer KFC more than this one. How about you?

    My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih

My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih – BERSIH 3.0 is over and I was there. Some people wonder what is this all about that caused chaos in the city? Very simple, clean and fair election. I don’t believe that it’s clean and fair even though Pakatan Rakyat had won 5 states in the past election, there’s still many doubt behind the electoral system in Malaysia. The main one which I concern is why does not allow independent observer on the election system during General Election? Where’s the transparency? So I joined the BERSIH rally, together with the other 200,000 Malaysian on last Saturday.

    My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih

    My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih

Kuala Lumpur was in lockdown. The only and fastest way to get into the city was to use the public transport – LRT. I fetched my friend, parked my car at Kelana Jaya station and we took the LRT. It was very crowded at the LRT, many people were in yellow t-shirt. I was pretty afraid of being arrested, but I think and think, there’s nothing wrong wearing yellow.  I too, was in yellow, but not the BERSIH t-shirt.

    My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih

The train were so packed with BERSIH protestors, we alight at Pasar Seni station instead of Masjid Jamek station because it would be even crowded at Masjid Jamek as it’s nearer to Dataran Merdeka. Jalan Sultan, near to Pasar Seni is one of the meeting point. BERSIH protestors were to gather at there, only then everyone walked towards Dataran Merdeka during noon.

    My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih

    My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih

The city was quiet without car, but it’s filled with yellow people, roaming the street, shouting “BERSIH” occasionally. I see Malays, Indian, and all races, I felt so happy that I am not Chinese, but a Malaysian supporting the rally. Everyone was in high spirit, smiling to each other and singing “BERSIH” in the ‘ole-ole’ theme.

As expected, most of the shops are closed at there, but some open their stalls to earn some extra bucks which they had a good business on that day. Went to 7 Eleven for breakfast at about 11am. Then we waited on Jalan Sultan at 12pm. The whole stretch of street was full of people. Police were there, to ensure nothing goes wrong. Police was still friendly at that time.

Since it’s early, the leader of the meeting point asked everyone to sit down first to wait for the walk. Huge yellow colour beach ball were throw around for fun play. It’s really a peaceful rally at that time. Everyone was cheering, chatting, and smiling to each other as if a one big family. It’s like a carnival, a carnival for clean and fair election.

At about 12.30pm. The walk, started. From Jalan Sultan to Dataran Merdeka is very near only, about 10-15 minute walk. Dataran Merdeka were sealed off by the police with barricade, wire barbed and police. I wonder why the city hall does not allow Malaysian to use the venue for a peaceful assembly. If they were to allow, nothing violent would be happened at the end. Come on, it’s a public space for everyone.

The walk stopped right in front of the bridge entering Dataran Merdeka. At there, this is where the sit-in happened. People sit down, and shouted “BERSIH”, as well as “Buka Pagar (Open the gate)” and sing the national anthem Negaraku too. You can also see people from all ages, young to old. This clearly shows that many people supported the event and believes that the government is not clean!

It’s super hot at that time, about 2pm already. Luckily I brought an umbrella. Despite the hot weather, everyone was still energetically shouting for electoral reform and ‘BERSIH’. It’s really sad that the police didn’t allow the protestor to go in to Dataran Merdeka. As agreed with the decision, people just gather outside the Dataran Merdeka.

    My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih

I sat for like 20 minutes, then I decided to move to else where to check out what’s going on at the other side – Masjid Jamek station. It’s even more crowded at there. My friend who was constantly checking on Facebook told me that the BERSIH rally has officially ended at 2.40pm, so it’s when we’ve decided to go home at that time.

    My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih

Well, it’s about 3.20pm, we went to the nearest LRT station, planning to leave since it’s officially ended. No idea why there’s still many people on the street, but many were leaving like us too. Most of the gate at Masjid Jamek Station were shut down, only one or two were open. We went in to queue for tickets, and it’s so packed and crowded in there. Many were going back home too.

    My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih

It’s a long queue at the ticketing machine and suddenly I smelled something weird, it’s like chemical burning and then my nose started feel irritating and sort of like burning in the inside, my eyes started blinking nonstop as it’s hard to open and tears sort of like coming out, it’s the TEAR GAS! At first, I thought of covering my nose with t-shirt will be alright, but later it’s getting even more irritating and uncomfortable. Then the whole LRT station become chaos. The gate that we came in were shut and people outside was banging the door crazily. How can the FRU fire tear gas so near to the LRT station?!

Running away from the station is the main solution now. I quickly poured water onto the towel I was holding and cover my nose and mouth and ran towards another exit, guided by a police, some ran directly to the underground platform of the LRT. Phewww. I felt better when I was outdoor. There’s many people in the station, it’s so chaotic. There’s even kids in there. I experienced the tear gas now, it’s not good. I did not bring salt, friend told me that consuming salt will help with the tear gas sickness.

    My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih

    My Experience At BERSIH 3.0 #bersihstory #bersih3 #bersih

I walked away Masjid Jamek as fast as possible as the place was getting messy. I did not understand why. I thought the rally has ended, why tear gas was fired? I didn’t bother about it anymore as getting myself safe is the most important. We walked to the next LRT station which is Dang Wangi, it’s also very crowded at there. And one stupid thing was only after we bought our tickets, the operator announced that the train heading to Kelana Jaya line were temporary interrupted. We have to take the Gombak-bound train to another station and switch to Kelana Jaya-bound train.

On the train, I keep checking on the news. It’s said that some protestors had broke into Dataran Merdeka only then the FRU fired tear gas and water canon. But then, does that necessary? Why? Where’s all the police who were standing in front of the barracade? How can the police did not see what were the frontline protestors doing? These are the question.

Luckily I went back early, police started arresting, assaulting people in yellow after 4.30pm. It’s very messy, it was supposed to be a peaceful rally. Who to blamed? I don’t think it’s the protestors as everyone was cooperating, perhaps the culprits who fake themselves as BERSIH protestors who created troubles there?

One more thing that I dislike is, why arrest, assault and prevent journalist from taking photos of police??????? Trying to hide something? Trying to act like gangster? Good luck Malaysia in the next General Election.

Anyway, it’s officially opens today, 14th April 2012. It’s located on the 4th floor, near the centre atrium. I’m gonna go visit it soon but not today cause I’m busy with assignments. Still remember I had MUJI’s stationery long ago during high school.

Nyonya Lunch At Precious Old China Cafe, Central Market – Recently, I have an assignment which is to research the design of local brand restaurant in Malaysia which features strong local or South East Asia. It’s pretty hard to find such restaurant with good design in my opinion. I’ve found one which is Precious Old China Cafe which is located in the Central Market.

So I went Central Market with 2 of my group mate, Wesley and Jia Hui via LRT as Central Market is located next to Pasar Seni LRT station only.

It was early when we arrived, it was about 10.30am and the restaurant haven’t open yet, so we sat by the food court until 11am, only then we get to go inside Precious Old Cafe Restaurant to eat, see and experience the space. Haha.

Nyonya Lunch At Precious Old China Cafe, Central Market

Precious Old China Cafe is actually a Nyonya restaurant featuring old-Chinese-interiors design and setting. The menu range from one-dish meal to Chinese-style rice + few dishes.

I ordered myself their in-house special, Nyonya Nasi Lemak (RM10.80) which comes with purple nasi lemak. The dyed is from a kind of purple flower which is similar to the purple rice that I had in Hat Yai’s Saban-Nga Restaurant in Thailand. It’s served with curry chicken, sambal paste, some Nyonya biscuit, boiled egg, nuts, and ikan bilis. The curry chicken and the rice were awesome, but I don’t really like the sambal sauce, it’s a bit sour. After all, this dish is good.

Nyonya Lunch At Precious Old China Cafe, Central Market

My friend ordered himself a Nyonya Balachan Fried Rice (RM10.80). He said the rice is good, as well as the fried chicken, and it’s so much better from Old Town’s.

The food at there actually quite nice, and it’s so crowded during lunch hour, filled with people working around the area. Price wise, is above affordable, but it’s acceptable give it’s food choice, location and settings.

Typo At Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur & Bought iPad Sleeve – Do you know Typo? Typo is a stationery & decor shop by the Australian boutique company Cotton On. I now only know it’s located at 4th floor of Pavilion, beside Snowflakes. Two weeks ago, I was in Singapore and I went to look for Typo at there too, never know that Malaysia has an outlet too.

Typo is now one of my favourite stationery shop because of the hippy, cool stationery like notebooks, pen, planner, accessories and more with cool graphics and typography. I bought an PU iPad sleeve at there too! RM60 only, to protect my iPad from, especially the Smart Cover from getting dirty. =D One thing, I realised some stuff here is kinda expensive compare to Singapore’s.
