    Tropfest Penang 2012

    Tropfest Penang 2012 – Went to Tropfest – The World’s Largest Short Film Festival which was also the last event of the month-long George Town Festival 2012. It’s my first time checking out a ‘film festival’ and also watching film at the outdoor, so close the nature. It was held at the Quarry Park of Penang’s Botanical Garden. Seating were on the nature grass floor.

    It’s a good experience, together with few hundreds people watching the professional short film from around the world. I thought it’s a projector screen but instead it was a very huge LED screen.

  • A Day Out With Yashica 635 Twin Lens Reflex Camera

    A Day Out With Yashica 635 Twin Lens Reflex Camera

    Do you know what is Twin Lens Reflex camera, the TLR? It’s an old vintage camera which has two lens and your viewfinder is on top of the camera and people look down into the camera to take a shot.

    My uncle borrowed me an very old camera, the Yashica 635 dual format TLR camera to play out. He kept it for super many years, it still looking good and in a very good condition for taking photograph. The dual format means that it can support both 120mm film and the 35mm film that we normally use.

    120mm is not really my favourite as it’s not easy to find and the processing and developing of it is costly. Luckily there’s an adapter which allow the camera to use 35mm format film, though this turn the camera into portrait mode.

    With much excitement about this ancient camera, brother and I went to buy a Fujifilm Superia 35mm film for RM12 to try it out. Spent about half an hour to figure out how to put in the film as there’s no manual for it and finally we’ve successfully have the film fixed in the camera.

    Everything is in manual, focusing, shutter speed and aperture. It has a wide aperture of f3.5 and fastest shutter speed of 1/500. We have to wind every exposure film ourselves manually as there’s no battery and automated part.

    After fixing the film, we quickly go to Straits Quay to try out the camera since the day was still bright. As you know, film camera without a flash and slow ISO film is always not advisable to shoot during low light situation.

    Focusing is easy with a magnifying glass on the viewfinder. However, setting up the best setting for shooting is not easy and we have to refer to the setting of DSLR like shutter speed and aperture. Haha. We are not pro to estimate it yet, I really salute the user of this camera back then. There must be a standard for it but I don’t know yet.

    We wanted to shoot all 36 exposure of the film but failed because the winding problem of the camera and we wind all till the end and we shot about 16 shots.

    Thought of going to the camera shop to developed the film right after it but couldn’t find any photo shop that is still open on a Sunday evening. Haha. And not much of them are developing and printing film, that’s a sad thing. Then we went to develop the next day, scanned into digital format and turn out to be good and love the bokeh and the photos taken by me. Haha, so proud of myself. XD Some shots were taken by my brother too.

    Seems like film camera is kinda fun, especially old old one. =D

    One more thing, it’s not easy to frame the photo as it’s inverted in the viewfinder and superhard to take landscape.

  • First Day To Watch 3D At W Cinemax At Island Plaza

    First Day To Watch 3D At W Cinemax At Island Plaza

    Hohoho, Penang island now have a new cineplex at Island Plaza, which add into the family of Golden Screen Cinema at Gurney Plaza and Queensbay Mall, Cathay Cineplex at Prangin Mall and soon to open Tanjung Golden Village at First Avenue.

    Last time, there’s actually a Mega Pavilion cineplex at Island Plaza but closed down after few years and few years later, the cinema business at there is back and I have a new place to go.

    What’s so special about this W Cinemax is that it shows 3D movie mostly and only one or two normal film.

    So I came back last Thursday, it’s officially opened on Thursday 4/11/2010 and you know I like new stuff and just nice that I was back home, I went there with my girlfriend to catch up a old 3D film, The Child Eye.

    There are only 3 cinema hall and very cute thing is they named it as X, Y, Z instead of the 1, 2, 3, 4. Since it’s promotion, the ticket is only RM10 and it’s very cheap for a 3D film when compare to GSC or TGV. I have no idea what’s the original ticket rate though, hopefully it’s cheap.

    Hueisean. =)

    W, X, Y, Z! =D Have you been there already?

  • What I Think About 82nd Oscars

    I woke up pretty early today, not very early, at 9am exactly, washed up, then lay my lazy ass on the comfy couch and turned the satellite TV to the channel broadcasting 82nd Annual Academy Awards, a.k.a. Oscars. This is my first time watching a LIVE telecast of Oscars and I am a fan of movie and film. I didn’t watch all the 10 nominated Best Motion Pictures, but have watched Avatar, District 9, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Up and Up In The Air.

    The event was so grand and I imagine myself, one day being at the event, as an invited guest or perhaps a behind-the-scene filmmaker? I’m dreaming definitely. Haha.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhQdJTlo5NI&w=500&h=307]

    Well, the result is out. The Hurt Locker by top director, James Cameron’s ex wife Kathryn Bigelow had it big, won the Best Motion Pictures. IMO, I don’t like it, perhaps Oscars winning pictures are always like that? The film does has its special and arts, the blast and booms were nice, the story is special, the acting, but just it’s not an enjoyable one. Maybe because it’s about the US Army, it’s talking about patriotism? I don’t know.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1_JBMrrYw8&w=500&h=307]

    Everyone was talking about Avatar, I don’t find it very interesting though, but I find it very AMAZING, it amazed me with the 3D, the music, the way of making and the animation. It does feel hollywood to me.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUV-bTqm5ss&w=500&h=307]

    I like Inglourious Basterds, nice film, nice acting, hilarious and historical with lame fictional fact. This is also the film that made me know that who is Quentin Tarantino.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7k6FwXJhNk&w=500&h=307]

    Up in the Air was boring to me, maybe I don’t know the way of enjoying it, but it’s nice being nominated.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z57b_-aD0Zc&w=500&h=307]

    District 9 was un-hollywood too. A documentary style film, could be a new style of making film and I find no reason disliking it.

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7kW0mUzIDI&w=500&h=307]

    Up, the animation was an art. I do feel the art, and the story was inspiring. I understand why it did not get the best film. =D

    I didn’t watch the rest like An Education, A Serious Man, Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, and The Blind Side. Gonna check it out soon when HD releases.

    Another thing I would like to say, the most enjoyable film but was not nominated in 2009 is Star Trek.^^

    Do you like The Hurt Locker?
