  • Pai Ti Gong / Hokkien New Year At Chew Jetty 拜天公

Pai Ti Gong / Hokkien New Year At Chew Jetty 拜天公

Pai Ti Gong / Hokkien New Year At Chew Jetty 拜天公 – Pai Ti Kong literally means “pray sky god” is a very happenings festival during Chinese New Year in Malaysia, especially in Penang. It is also known as the Hokkien’s Chinese New Year where this day is celebrated by most Hokkien Chinese. It falls on the 8th day of Chinese New Year during the night throughout the midnight, where you can hear the sound of firecrackers and fireworks all over Penang, and place where people celebrate it.

On this night, Hokkien Chinese set up a table full of food which are to serve to the “Sky God”. Although fireworks and firecrackers are prohibited in Malaysia, but then people still playing with them because it’s one of the Chinese culture.

Penang is has the most people celebrated this day and it’s the most happenings place for Pai Ti Kong in Malaysia, especially at Chew Jetty.

I am a Cantonese Chinese, so I don’t really celebrate the day, but then I do go to Chew Jetty every year to see people celebrating it and also to pray too. Last year, I didn’t get a chance but this year I have it. Chew Jetty was even more crowded this year. About 1km stretch of road were close for the Pai Ti Kong festival. As usual, a long table is set up on the road where people put food on the table which to be served to the god. Rich people will buy roasted pig to be dedicated to the god, of course, they will take back the roasted pig and eat with their family and friends after the praying ceremony at midnight.

Chew Jetty was so happenings and crowded. Something different then last time is there’s a stage set up with performance and some performers hail all the way from China. Mini stalls selling gift and collectible product are set up in Chew Jetty too.

The number of people that went into Chew Jetty was really a lot, a lot until that RELA had to restrict the number of people to go in as afraid that too many people will make the place collapse. Luckily, everything went nice, as they arrange people to go in batch by batch. Well, this is another must see in Penang, it’s something very different, very special, during Chinese New Year.

Besides that, the whole open compound of the temple is converted into a night market site that runs until Chinese New Year where people can shop, pray, see and eat.

Indeed it look very grand. The temple only lights up during festival like Chinese New Year and Nine Emperor Gods festival so you must not miss out right now.

光明新春庙会 Guang Ming Daily’s Miao Hui 2012 – The press centre of Guang Ming Daily on Macalister Road turns into a happenings carnival on last Sunday night where thousands flocked into the compound of Guang Ming Daily and Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Centre. It’s the annual ‘temple fair’ by Guang Ming Daily which is a mini carnival that stages performance, dragon dance, lion dance, and a mini art-craft market in conjunction with the celebration of Chinese New Year.

This ‘temple fair’ or known as Miao Hui to the Chinese is a smaller scale of Chinese New Year carnival celebration by the Penang State Goverment.

It happened on the Saturday night that I was free and have got nothing to do, curiously, I went to check out the Guang Ming Miao Hui on Macalister Road, armed with my photography gear. My friend Min Xiang, Kok Sheng, Sammy and Stanley were there too, I went there to meet them up.

    #4: Kaka Art Market.

The whole carnival occupied two addresses on Macalister Road, the Guang Ming Daily & Sinchew Daily Press Centre and the Sun Yat-Sen Museum. There’s a mini art market (Kaka Art Market) at there which sells plenty of cute and cool handicraft. All the handmade were pretty impressive and nice. I bought something at there too.

  • Chinese New Year Lighting

    Chinese New Year Lighting

Chinese New Year Lighting – Those who celebrate Christmas, they will get a Christmas tree and decorate it nicely with bells, candies, gift boxes as well as LED lighting. My family is not really a Christmas person when it comes to Christmas, our house doesn’t has a Christmas tree.

However, when it comes to Chinese New Year, we will hunt for Chinese lanterns as well as those LED lighting. Different types of lighting can be seen at almost every electrical and lighting shops in Penang. It sort of light up some part of the city too. Now you see that Chinese has their love on lighting too.

Do you decorate your home of garden with these kind of lighting?

Chinese New Year Thematic Lantern Exhibtion At Victoria Harbour

Haha, this is so freaking old post where Chinese New Year was but I still find it interesting to share it up with you guys, hope you guys like it. I actually went to travel to my favourite Asian city, Hong Kong during the last few days of the Chinese New Year.

We thought of it would be very happenings in Hong Kong during Chinese New Year but unfortunately not during the last few days of Chinese New Year. Luckily, there’s still some mini Lantern Exhibition at Victoria Harbour for people to check it out and take photos.

On our visit to Victoria Harbour, we spend a little time to check out the lanterns and also the famous light show.

I got to tell you seriously that their lantern exhibition was real cool and neat. All were high quality and exhibited nicely and neatly which I think it’s not possible to happen in Malaysia. Hmm hmm.

There’s also some Chinese opera going on at the performing stage and I think they were pretty cool. Enjoying opera and lantern show in a very cool 13 degree celcius weather were fun.

    Yikhung!

    Foggy Hong Kong.

What a nice place and night at Victoria Harbour.

    There’s cute rabbit too!

  • Hueisean and Friends at Kek Lok Si Temple

Hueisean and Friends at Kek Lok Si Temple

Last year, I went to photoshoot at Kek Lok Si temple twice, one with the Leo gang another time with Alvin because there’s not much time on the first visit so we planned a second visit to do some serious photoshooting of the famous Kek Lok Si pagoda and temple in Penang.

The reason of us shooting the Kek Lok Si temple during Chinese New Year is because that the whole thing light up nicely with decorations during that period.

This year, I didn’t have the feeling to do same thing because I did that last year already. I have already shoot most of the thing at Kek Lok Si temple, except a whole Kek Lok Si view which have to be taken far away from the temple.

Although have already did photoshoot last year, but I still visit to the temple this year because of the beatifulness and awesomeness.

What’s different here this year is I went up with Hueisean and her friends. Who is Hueisean? She’s my girlfriend. Oh yeah. Haha. So in the series of photos below, you will see a lot of gorgeous photos of her. =D She has become my subject of photography lately, a free model. =D

Why not? She’s cute, she’s pretty, has a youthful, cheerful look.

I went there like 3 days before the end of Chinese New Year and still the road up Kek Lok Si as usual jam during that time. Kek Lok Si temple has the most visitor during Chinese New Year of all of others time of the year. Everyone come to Penang goes there, Everyone who is from Penang goes there. It’s a must visit spot during Chinese New Year.

    Yonye on the camera.

People pray but I see most people were up there just to join the fun, and also take photograph.

This year had some special case happened at the temple as one kid like 18/19 years old hit an old lady while reversing his car. Without apologizing or checking out how’s that old lady was, he scolded and shouted at the family of the old lady. Someone took the video of the happenings and posted on Youtube and Chinese newspaper reported about it. Damn, why youth today so no manners one.

I think it’s fun with many people around, fireworks and friends, but I don’t like to take photo of the same thing again. Very boring and I feel stress as I’ve no idea what to shoot. I always try my best to shoot the best thing, the best shot to share with you guys and here are they.
