CNY 2013: 年初二 – 吧王庙 Ba Wong Temple @ Klian Intan
CNY 2013: 年初二 – 吧王庙 Ba Wong Temple @ Klian Intan – A visit to an old temple at Klian Intan for prayers during my reunion at Pengkalan Hulu. This small little village of Klian Intan used to has thousand of tenth population during my grandma’s era but it has not become a tiny village of 1000+ populations. What’s still standing is this Ba Wong Temple at the entrance of the Klian Intan village. It’d been some times that we visited this place and it’s the time again to do some prayers. -

Putrajaya: Cloudy Evening
Putrajaya: Cloudy Evening – Went there few weeks back while on the way back to KL from Muar with Clarice and guess what, it’s her first time there! Yes, she has not been there before so I thought of drove her there and show her around. I like Putrajaya because it’s the nicest city in Malaysia with very awesome architecture of government’s building. Sadly, it’s like a ghost town at night or weekend, there’s nothing much to do and the development at there seems halted. Blah…Ah, shit, Monday blues, Monday blues, Monday blues. =D -

Seremban: Empayar Seremban Siew Bao City 芙蓉烧包城

Seremban: Empayar Seremban Siew Bao City 芙蓉烧包城 – Every time you drive passed Seremban toll, confirm you will notice a big building writing EMPAYAR SEREMBAN SIEW POW or in Chinese 芙蓉烧包城 which literally means Seremban Siew Bao CITY! You think it’s huge right?I went there while on the way back from Muar to buy a couple of Siew Bao to eat as I’ve never tried before. Moreover, Seremban is super famous for their Siew Bao. Siew Bao is barbecue-pork-filled crispy Chinese biscuit. Surprisingly, upon arriving here, the Siew Bao section is just a small part of the place and the place sells more than just Siew Bao. They have Chinese seafood, and some other local confectionery, it feels very weird to me.
Anyway, bought Chicken Siew Bao and Pork Siew Bao from there and ate it on the spot since it’s still freshly baked and hot. They both tasted very yummy. It’s not so awesome when it’s cold so I recommend that if you can, eat it right away, either way, heat it when you got back home.

Muar: Tanjung Emas, Tanjung Ketapang & Rojak
Muar: Tanjung Emas, Tanjung Ketapang & Rojak – Talking about the attractions in Muar, Johor, there’s nothing much actually, except food, and also this place call Tanjung. When you say about Tanjung, the local will know about it, there’s two Tanjung actually, one is Tanjung Emas, and another is Tanjung Ketapang, both are very close to each other and they are two riverside public park for the local’s recreation.
Namewee’s song did mention about doing Tai Ji @ Tanjung. =D Besides, it’s also famous for Rojak as there’s a food court nearby. The Tanjung Ketapang, however is famous for the monkeys roaming around the seaside area freely! But then I didn’t see much monkeys that day, maybe because of the rainy weather and they all hid up.
After Tanjung, the last destination of Muar, we went back to Kuala Lumpur. Missed the chance to try out famous Assam Fish @ Parit Jawa and this means I will be back again for it. Yeah. By the way, the rojak costs RM3 and I feel it’s OKOK-only. I prefer local Chinese rojak with lots of fruits.

Muar: Thirst Quenching Pear Juice @ Jalan Yahya
Muar: Thirst Quenching Pear Juice @ Jalan Yahya – I bet many of you haven’t heard of Pear Juice before. I knew about pear – the fruit, but then juicing it into a beverage, I’ve never heard it before nor try it. In Muar, there’s one stall that sells pear juice, located on Jalan Yahya right in front of a fruit stall. It’s recommended by one of my Muar friend that it’s a must-try in Muar.So I followed my GPS and went to look for it but FAILED to locate it for the first time, I didn’t want to give up and went to find again, and found it right front of a fruit stall. It’s a very very small stall, that why I missed it at first. At only RM1 per pack for take-away, it’s enough to quench the thirst of me and Clarice after exploring food at Tam Jiak Kheh for whole afternoon under the hot sun. Check it out!

Muar: Tam Jiak Kheh / Glutton Street / 贪食街 / Jalan Haji Abu
Muar: Tam Jiak Kheh / Glutton Street / 贪食街 / Jalan Haji Abu – I went for a half day trip to Muar after eating a lot at Malacca last weekend. Muar is a little town in the state of Johor and I’ve never been there before. I heard that there’s some nice food at there and moreover, the famous Youtube star Namewee is from Muar who always promotes his hometown, so I detoured to Muar before heading back to KL for a little exploration.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Tam Jiak Kheh, since 1952. Jalan Haji Abu of Muar.
Many food to choose, to eat, you can start out with the stalls in front of Kim San. About 30 minutes from Malacca lies this little town of Muar, the town is not big and pretty easy to navigate around. It’s filled with lots of eclectic style Chinese shophouses in the town which most of them equipped with very tall antenna that is to steal the free-to-play channel from Singapore. XD
There in the town has this street with the local call it Tam Jiak Kheh (hokkien) that means Glutton Street, somewhere on Jalan Haji Abu. When I first read about it, I thought it’s a long street with lots of food, but upon arriving, it’s just a short street, but with food stalls on both side of the street, selling from day to night. Interesting.

Herbal Drinks, Liang Teh stall. Very cheap, RM0.60/glass.
Clarice buying Teochew Kuih which we didn’t really know any of them. Some were good, some were not, try it yourself and tell me good or not.
Chai Tou Gao / Chai Tao Kuih which tasted a bit tasteless. Hmm, I want more chilli sauce and soy sauce. Maybe I am from Penang and the food from Penang has a stronger taste. According to my Muar friend, Wei Kean, he told me that one can find almost all Muar’s food on this little street, so we spent a few hours at this street looking for Muar’s street food, gastronomically eating around. This town somehow gives me a friendly impression where the people are very friendly, some speak Hokkien dialect in Penang.
Parking at the roadside requires coupon. You can find parking coupon at the stalls on this street. Started of the exploration with Kim San Public Cooked-Food Market. You can find a lot of otak-otak which is famous in Muar, chicken rice, Chinese herbal tea, kuih, Char Koay Teow and more! So now let my photos bring you around.

Otak-otak. All selling at RM0.60/stick and freshly made. There’s fish and prawn, some crab. It tasted more spicy compare to Mapley 223’s.
Happy with the otak-otak. There’s too many otak-otak stalls at Tam Jiak Kheh. I can’t say which is the best, but I like this lorry’s outside Kim San Food Centre.
Opening otak-otak at chicken rice ball shop.
Walked further from Tam Jiak Kheh and we found the Muar Chicken Rice Ball. Bigger than Malacca’s but then I am disappointed with the taste. The chicken doesn’t look nice and the rice is just rice pressed into ball. I’ve heard good review but this is not a good one.
Chicken Rice Ball shop front, no feel. 日发鸡饭粒
Banana Fritter’s stall. Pisang Goreng! Looking yummy and good.
Alright, very crunchy, but the banana was not so good, kinda sour. I like Penang Tanjung Bunga’s. =D
They use very big banana, really really really big.
5 Foot Path.
Used to be REX Cinema! REX was famous in Malaysia, maybe back in the 60s. Now turned into an electronic shop.
Lovely old-school architecture.
Pinky wall with nice door!
Indian temple on a Chinese street.
Here’s Clarice. =D
Somewhere at Tam Jiak Kheh.
Pinky wall again.
Very interesting is that at there each street has their own colour, like the whole street is pink, whole street is blue, yellow and so on. Very colourful. Not much we ate around there, we ate Chai Tao Kuih, Teochew Kuih, plenty of Otak-otak, plenty of herbal drinks, Chicken Rice Ball, Banana Fritters and that’s all. Wanted to eat satay as I heard it’s good, but no luck finding any of the stalls open on that day.
One thing, you can buy the street food, then walk in to any of the coffee shop to eat, be sure to clean them up when you are done. =D

Malacca: Wan Tan Mee @ Dung Fong Food Court
Malacca: Wan Tan Mee @ Dung Fong Food Court – I’ve heard before that the Wan Tan Mee (Noodle) at Malacca is different from elsewhere of Malaysia, the Malaccan has their own version of Wan Tan Mee. Thus, I went to Malacca to identify and see how different it is.
I found a stall located near to the Tong Bee Seafood which is also recommended by one of the local there. I went there after my little sihum lala meal and it’s actually quite nearbu to each other but then the GPS somehow took me a big round to reach it, don’t know why.
In a little food court of Dong Feng, many people were waiting for the Wan Tan Mee, it came after 10 minutes of waiting. It’s RM4 per plate and what’s different is there’s sio bak/siu yok roasted pork on it! Normally Wan Tan Mee serves with BBQ pork cha siu, but this one has additional siu yok. The sauce or gravy is a bit more saturated than the normal waterish soy sauce. Indeed, it tasted different because of the gravy that contains a little bit of chilli oil or something like that which tasted a bit of spicyness that I like!
It’s not a big different as I expected, but it has it own style and I kinda like it with siu yok. If the style is mix with Penang’s and KL’s that it will be super awesome as Penang uses lard, Kuala Lumpur has very good BBQ pork and noodle whereas Malacca’s gravy is special.F Do check out this place if you wanna try out Malacca-style Wan Tan Mee.

Malacca: Back Alley Cockles, Lala, Cuttlefish Seafood @ Tong Bee’s Stall
Malacca: Back Alley Cockles, Lala, Cuttlefish Seafood @ Tong Bee’s Stall – In August, I went to Malacca with friends, but then I missed out quite some nice food spot in the little historical town and one of them is this little seafood stalls located at the back alley / lorong of Jalan Bunga Raya. Little seafood that I mean are those small stuff like lala, siham (cockles), cuttlefish, tiger prawns and some other non-seafood like BBQ toufu.
It’s a truly local style of food stall because firstly, it’s located on a back alley that you can hardly find it unless you walk into it, then you sit onto a low stool and share a long table with others. Very got feel and culture.

Notice King’s or MY JEANS FASHION. It’s the alley left to it. It took me and Clarice a little while to search for it while driving on Jalan Bunga Raya and finally found it located beside My Jeans Fashion. You will be welcome and amazed by the little stalls located at the back alley, there’s two stalls and go for the one nearer to the street which is Tong Bee Stall, another one is operated by Capitol Satay Celup.

Famous TV food show host Axian came before too!
Preparing.
Sihum Cockles.
Lala.
Cuttlefish with Kangkung. Sit down on the low stool and start ordering. There’s lala (RM1.50), sihum (RM1.50), cuttlefish with vege (RM7 for 2 person), tiger prawns and BBQ toufu. They are all very small plate and come with hot and sour chilli sauce which is good. Not forget to mention, the price is pretty reasonable too!

Clarice with the lala.
Thumbs up initially, thumbs down for the unfortunate event.
Night comes to life at the quiet alley. One unfortunate event was that I ate a very stinky sihum which taste like, dirty drain water or something shit, it just gave me a bad experience. Probably because it’s not clean enough from the mud. Ewwwww. It was a good head start, ended with a bad sihum. But overall, this is something interesting, smell your sihum before you put in your mouth. Haha.

Malacca: Masjid Selat Melaka / Malacca Strait’s Mosque (Night)
Malacca: Masjid Selat Melaka / Malacca Strait’s Mosque (Night) – Revisited this cool floating mosque at Malacca for the second time, but this time is during night time. It has become photographer’s favourite place to shoot in Malacca and I being an avid photographer, how can I not check out this place at night and take a few shots? =D

Malacca: Hangout@Jonker Hotel

Hangout @ Jonker Malacca: Hangout@Jonker Hotel – Cheap & Clean – OK, it might not as cheap as those backpackers lodge/hostel/beds, but at least, it’s almost a hotel, minus those fancy facilities, but with a clean and minimalist design room, a breakfast bar, friendly staff and a very good location. It’s a no frill hotel like Tune Hotel but has a better looking interiors. =D

The front facade, it’s a 4 storey shophouse.
Breakfast/chill area with free Internet access and pantry. So this was the place for my night at Malacca last weekend. I’ve tried a backpacker’s lodge before, and now this time, an upgrade from previous one and costed me RM80/night. It’s a promotional rate actually that I’ve got via their Facebook. Hangout occasionally runs promotional deal via their Facebook, so you might have to check out for the best rate. Else, it’s RM147 (Internet) / RM228 (Walk-In).

View from the roof top. Lovely Malacca river.
This is the twin hotel room. Simple and clean. Overall, the stay was good, it’s just right beside of the famous Jonker Walk of Malacca. No parking available and I parked my car at the Red Christ Church there and walk over to the hotel. Free breakfast provided too with light meal like bread and coffee and one more, there’s a open roof top for chilling and viewing the Malacca river. If it’s always that cheap then good, otherwise, the rate is pretty expensive for budget Malaysian traveler like me. Haha, if you are from the Singapore then it’s pretty good price for you. Cheer!Jalan Hang Lekiu,75200 Malacca.Telephone: +606-282-8318
