    Thaipusam in Penang, 2016 – Haven’t been to Thaipusam for many years, the last time was like 6 years ago that I went to join the rituals of throwing coconut to cleanse the road with coconut water for the devotees.

    It was a great one, visiting the Thaipusam area at Waterfall Road on the 2nd day of Thaipusam holy festival and it was crowded as usual. Getting up to the top of Waterfall Hill Temple (long name ahead!!! – Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple) was tiring yet exciting because the view from the top was so good, not to mentioned the air was cooler up there.

    Not a Hindu, but still did a prayer at the temple for good health and good wealth. Getting back down ended my journey at the Thaipusam festival. Will do a more thorough Thaipusam experience next time!

    Chinese New Year’s Celebration At Newcastle’s Chinatown – Following up the Chinese New Year’s celebration in London, the Chinatown in Newcastle also had its own Chinese New Year celebration on last Sunday. The  Chinatown in Newcastle covers the stretch of Stowell Street that filled up with Chinese restaurant mostly, and a few Chinese retails and hair salons.

    Unlike London’s CNY celebration where you can find a series of performance at a main stage and a small CNY parade, the celebration at Newcastle’s Chinatown was actually just the performances of Lion Dance & Dragon Dance. Local, Geordies and students, all flocked into the street of Chinatown – Stowell Street early on Sunday morning to experience the sound of live firecrackers and ‘dong dong qiang’ of lion & dragon dances. Me and friends went at noon to join the fun and feel the Chinese New Year’s atmosphere as it was the 10th day of Chinese New Year.

    Chinatown in Newcastle has been quiet all the while, and finally, the only day of the year that it’s very happenings. Lion dance went to each restaurants and retails on the street to perform a short dance to bring luck to their business. Funny is that most of the crowds followed the lion dance team all the way from beginning to the end. There’s also a very small fun fair at the end of the street which I think that day was the most crowded day of the year. Well, the celebration was quite interesting, with lion dance, fun fair, some Chinese performance that I’ve missed it and a sea of people. This gave me a different perception of the Chinatown in Newcastle instead of being a quiet street with no Chinatown’s feeling. Anyway, the food price at all restaurants remained the same on that day, which was a very good thing!

    Amazing New Year’s Eve Countdown & Fireworks At London

    Amazing New Year’s Eve Countdown At London – Having the chance to countdown for a new year of 2014 at one of the greatest city of the world was already one awesome excitement. I never know that the experience and awesomeness was more than what I’ve expected. It’s all started at around 5pm; ‘Faster liao, faster liao, we have to go to find a good spot for later’s fireworks!’, we were telling each other when we were having the worst Chicken Curry Katsu ever at Wasabi near Harrods after touring the Natural History Museum. Some friends were already there at Westminster, the Thames’ riverside with a good spot where we were having our own sweet time.

    The tube was freaking packed, more than sardine and yes, a friend of ours didn’t get to board the tube and we have to wait for him to arrive at the arrival station – Westminster. Slowly moving our ass out of the tube station, we started to join the sea of people, slowly flowing into Embankment riverside. Phone signal was full, but totally unusable. The whole network was jam, but we kept on trying as to find the location of another group of friends and meet up. Well, we found at last, but couldn’t get to another group as the crowds filled up the space and I couldn’t get any closer to this group, so we just moved to another spot to book a good view for the fireworks. It was on the middle of Westminster Bridge, where we again, met up with another group of people and it felt so good that we were able to spend the eve together with so many people.

    Well, the wait started from then on at 7pm. I’ve read that this year’s fireworks is very different as it provides a multiple sensory experience where you don’t only see, but taste and smell as well! Sounds cool to you and me, BUT I didn’t get to experience that I didn’t know how it works. I did get a pack of goodies including a pack of sweets (taste) and a booklet of (smell). The paper reported that there’s a special location where about 50k of people could taste the edible bubble and smell the fireworks. Hmm?

    What we did in the 5 hours of wait? It’s like ‘shiok sendiri’, having fun on our own, dancing with the music blasting from the speaker right above us, as if we created our own outdoor party. Others was just standing and waiting. Cold, of course, and wet. Luckily, there’s no rain throughout the wait, only it rained 30 minutes before New Year, but it was a small one! The music was pretty cool, but I just think that there should be DJ to hype up the atmosphere to another level instead of us ‘shiok sendiri’.

    I didn’t see previous year’s fireworks before on Youtube, so it’s very much new and exciting to me and I didn’t expect so much too! 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1, seriously, I was amazed, mouth dropped with the fireworks, syncing with a series of great music, and colourful lights blasting off the London Eye. The show was spectacular, I just couldn’t stop screaming with excitement. ‘Damn, it’s really very good, and I’d no regret waiting for 5-6 hours.’ I should had go earlier and book a better spot, like the place just across the London Eye. (The video on BBC1 will make you go WOW). My favourite parts of the fireworks is the dubstep part and the final where it blast everything off.

    About 11 minutes of screaming, and ‘Happy New Year’ nonstop, it’s the end of the countdown and 2014 is here, finally. That’s also the worst part of the whole countdown thingy, as getting onto the free tube takes about an hour, and we didn’t bother to queue for it. We just walked, walked and walked under the rain, through the crowds, past a stupid fighting scene, then crossed the bridge, an about an hour, we reached Chinatown at Leicester Square. Chinese restaurants were all open at midnight, and all with an extra special crazy 30% price hike in the menu, yet, we still had our supper. Yeah, some times in the future, I want to come back again. One more thing, after seeing this fireworks, I just don’t know where else has a better fireworks!

    London’s Chinatown During Chinese New Year

    London’s Chinatown During Chinese New Year – London’s Chinatown has one of the biggest Chinese New Year celebration out of Asia, read again, it’s not the ‘the biggest’, but one of the biggest, so there’s still other great CNY celebration places like Sydney, Vancouver, NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco and more.

    Although Newcastle has a Chinatown, it’s rather quiet during normal days and during CNY too. So, I’ve travelled down to London to experience the Chinese festive season and to see how great the celebration was. The celebration venues cover the Trafalgar Square and Chinatown where the square has a main stage for performance and Chinatown is the end point for the parade. Sounds interesting?

    Unfortunately, I woke up late due to a party I had the night before and only got to Chinatown at noon! The sound of Chinese drums ‘dong dong qiang’ can be heard from far where the sign of lion dance could not be seen in any near distance. The most craziest thing was the packed crowds, where you can hardly move a bit and the worst, you can’t even see what’s ahead of the crowds. I’ve no idea where were the crowds heading to. It’s like an open-day for Chinatown, people just visit the place, for fun. Seriously, there’s not much to see in Chinatown at that time, it’s just maybe, a few Lion Dance, and that’s it. Why would people wanted to visit the Chinatown so badly during CNY but not normal days?! It’d made me so difficult to walk and look for food at that time. I wanted to have a good lunch at Chinatown, but the ended abandoning the place and head over to Covent Garden for food.

    So, Chinatown during Chinese New Year was really crowded, but honestly, it’s not as fun as I thought. Yes, there’s  the festive feeling, many people, there’s Lion Dance, and lanterns (that were not light up), but that’s it. Come at night, it would be better when the crowd dispersed, or very early in the morning, but not noon time. Now, I want to try other places’ Chinatown like NYC, SF, Sydney and Vancouver which I’ve read that it’s very happenings during Chinese New Year.

    How I Celebrated Chinese New Year In The UK – ‘There’s no such thing as Chinese New Year here in the UK’, some said to me; but the beautiful festive just went on as usual with good food, gambling & friends, minus the receiving of Ang Bao and the reunion with family & friends back in hometown. The feeling before Chinese New Year was quite depressing, especially a few days before, when you see people posting status about heading back hometown, posting photos of CNY decorations and the preparation for this festive.

    However, the festive feeling turned on when I changed up a set of clothing, and went for a good meal with a bunch of Malaysian-friends who were in the same situation of not getting to celebrate Chinese New Year. The family back in the hometown got to eat a good meal, so do we, far away from home. The most important thing is get-together, since it’s a tradition festive, getting-together for a little bit of time is good, it’s not just just spending the whole day at work and being alone.

    I shut myself from working on assignments, I stopped thinking about budget during the past CNY weekends and had a good time eating some really good meal. There’s the first ‘reunion’ dinner at a Malaysian restaurant then a KTV session on the CNY’s eve. Then I attended a Chinese New Year dinner organised by my university’s Malaysian Society and spend the night with many Malaysian on Chor 1. The celebration shifted from Newcastle to London where I had a good steamboat and drunk night, with again friends from Malaysia, but specifically, Penang. Lastly, a visit to the super-crowded Chinatown in London on Chor 3 had gave me a strong feel of the Chinese New Year atmosphere in a foreign land. A great weekend I had, and it’s time to get back to work. Happy Chinese New Year to all!

    These Chinese New Year Songs Will Make You Feel Festive! – First time of my life, I am living so far away from home, centred at the middle of the Earth – UK, cold and missing home, I don’t get to reunion and celebrate the fun Chinese New Year with my family back in Malaysia.

    Despite there’s still quite a numbers of Chinese (from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia & beyond) are residing here, yet the feeling and atmosphere is totally different. Chinatown is where the only place I can be at to feel the reunion of – overseas Chinese. That’s why I am heading to London’s Chinatown during CNY!

    I definitely don’t like the feeling of being away during Chinese New Year, it’s the only time of the year where everyone will be back. Even some times it’s just HELLO and BYE BYE, that’s still better than not seeing each other. Go home if you can, call home and if you can’t, let’s just listen to some Malaysian-made Chinese New Year songs that will ease the homesickness and I am very sure-ahhhh, these Malaysian Chinese New Year songs are so much better than the original-China’s version.

    I think that it’s only in Malaysia-lah, that TV stations, radio stations are all ‘competing’ to release their own Chinese New Year song. I don’t really see that in Hong Kong, or Singapore, or Taiwan! Awesome right?

    Super Crowded At KLCC Park During Hari Raya

    Super Crowded At KLCC Park During Hari Raya – I know Raya has passed for a few weeks already, but then I am very free right now, enjoying my lovely holiday and so there’s plenty of time for me to throwback some interesting moment and stuff.
    Sharing back about Hari Raya, I believe many people balik kampung to either celebrate the holy festival with their family, and the people who were not celebrating, too went back to hometown for a holiday. Somehow, I’ve decided to stay in Kuala Lumpur during that time as I know hometown Penang would be packed with tourists and people, traffic congestion would be everywhere too.
    Very interestingly, Kuala Lumpur was deserted, with so little car on all the major roads. No surprise because many who resides in Kuala Lumpur are actually came from other part of Malaysia. However, if you take a trip down to KLCC, you would be shocked by the number of people at there! It’s the most crowded time of the year, with foreign labour all packed at the KLCC Park, making some uncomfortable moment for me. Moreover, there’s the Popular Book Fair happened at the convention centre, no doubt, everyone cramped in this iconic place of Kuala Lumpur.
    Well, I actually recommend people to head to Kuala Lumpur during Hari Raya because during that time, you can be king of the road with no ‘pek-chek’ moment in the traffic jam and enjoy your shopping, but just beware of the crowds at KLCC.

    CNY 2013: 年初五 Valentine’s Day – Don’t know since when, Valentine’s Day falls in the Chinese New Year period. Few years back was on the first day, where people seemed to celebrate Chinese New Year more than Valentine’s Day. This year is on the fifth day, no bai nian, no gathering, no gamble, no pray, no ang kong, no shoot, so I got a day out with my lovely Valentine, Clarice. =D

    It’s pretty interesting for this year, it’s much more Chinese New Year day than Valentine’s day. The day was simple, it’s desserts, Japanese food dinner, shopping and ended the fun at the Snake Temple with crowds of devotees, snakes, and Chinese god and lots of love. Awesome.

    CNY 2013: 年初2 PSY Gangnam Style x2 Penang

    CNY 2013: 年初2 PSY Gangnam Style x2 Penang – BN said it’s just a cultural Chinese New Year open house for the Penangite, no political agenda behind it, but how do you explain the thousands of blue Barisan National & 1Malaysia flags in Penang which are dangerous to the motorist and unsightful to the beautiful Penang. If you are in Penang, it’s just madness.
    Monday morning, 2nd day of Chinese New Year was extraordinary hot yet I was very excited to see PSY’s Gangnam Style at the Barisan National Chinese New Year Open House Celebration at Han Chiang’s High School. Surprisingly, there’s not much of traffic jam on the road, instead it’s human jam at the venue. I was there to see PSY, not Prime Minister, nor other government officials.

    It’s really very hot, I regretted did not bring an umbrella with me and a big bottle of ice cold water. The scorching heat of the sun could anytime dehydrate me and caused me to faint. I was seeking for shade, squatting down among the sea of human to get some shade from the 35 degree cel direct solar heat.
    The venue was filled with everyone, Malaysians, it’s not just Malaysian Chinese, but Malay, Indian too. Many were there to see PSY, many were there to get free food too. I wonder how many were there to actually see the PM?
    Manage to hear the nice voice of Shila Hamza, later then the speech of Teng Chang Yeow (Penang BN Leader) & Najib Razak (Prime Minister) caused some laughter among the crowds as they were not what the crowds wanted to see most. Feel bad for them as crowd was booing for Teng Chang Yeow, saying NO when Najib shouted ‘Are you ready for BN?’, Rosmah singing Chinese New Year song and Najib failed to invite PSY for lou sang. Hahaha. Too bad.
    After 1.5 hours being under the hot sun, PSY appeared, after the long winded speech by Teng, Najib and singing of Rosmah! Oh gosh! The excitement increased more than 100%! Took a few photos of him in a rush and get myself into the tune and rhythm of Gangnam Style! Oppa! Very sad to see that the front crowds was busy taking video and photo of him, come on, you see him all the time on the Internet and it’s time to join the Gangnam dance. Luckily, happily, PSY did the Gangnam Style the second time! And this time, he managed to get the crowds dancing along! SHIOKNESS!
    After PSY, time to go, took about half an hour to get out of this place. Very bad crowd control and went to look for fluid to re-hydrate  Very hot. Well, very happy to see PSY and enjoyed my 10 minutes with Gangnam Style. BEST CNY! Thanks BN for bringing PSY, but you still are not my favourite political party in Malaysia.
