Discovering A Small Part Of France In Big KL

This is a guest post by Edith @ www.applesonsticks.com
As a foreigner, living in KL is not as challenging as eating in KL. My first week after arriving here I was so excited about diving into the culinary world that I forgot how all this new exciting food was really new to my body, and therefore ended up with food poisoning and indigestion on a regular basis. All that was cured with the help of a lifesaver, and even though I love Asian food, I soon found myself missing Western food, or at least the part that I’ve gotten used to in France.
That’s where my French friends came in handy, because they have been living here longer than I have, and knew the best, yet hidden places in KL. So one fine day we went to a place called Levain Boulangerie Patisserie, which is a place located far from the hustle & rustle of the chaotic city. Quietly placed in a renovated bungalow, Levain Boulangerie Patisserie welcomes guests for breakfast, brunch, dessert, tea time, coffee, and any event that requires cake! The first meal I served there was brunch, and it was perfect for that! No need to wake up early on a Saturday, taking all the time you need to get up and to your destination, after which you get most comfortable with your croissant, fresh orange juice, and cappuccino. Although it’s difficult to stop at only 1 serving – once you enter and the fresh bakery smell hits you, with the trey in one hand and the clips in the other, you find yourself overwhelmed with choices of pastries, breads, cookies and cakes. I ended up ordering more than I could take, but luckily you can always get take away!
If you are hungry for a larger meal, you can choose from a variety of hot meals prepared in Levain’s kitchen – pasta, sandwiches, salads, and morning meals such as pancake platters and French toast with fruits. If you are less hungry, and just in for a hearty treat, there is an unlimited assortment of pastries that will make your mouth water. It’s almost impossible to choose from all the goodies laid out before you. Melon buns, cheese tarts, chocolate chip cookies, donuts, brownies, croissants, mini croissants, danishes of all sorts looking delicious for an offer you can’t refuse.
But maybe you’re looking for something special. In that case you must try their offerings of cakes, pralines and macarons! All the cakes look amazing, and you get to choose between Chocolate Truffle, New York Cheesecake, even Chocolate Tiramisu, and many more. Macarons come in all colors and flavorings, and the pralines are really just an endless sea of the most gourmet recipes I’ve seen.
All topped off with a fresh juice of mango, orange or pineapple and a lovely tea or coffee to pair it with. I had one of my best brunches in this place, no doubt, and I think everyone would find their menu just overwhelming. There’s really a treat for every individual in this place, and the location it’s served in is no more below than is the food. Especially if you’re looking for a small part of France to experience the French breads again, you ought to try this place out.
  • Klang Valley: Signature Cake @ Thirty 8, Grand Hyatt Hotel

Klang Valley: Signature Cake @ Thirty 8, Grand Hyatt Hotel

Klang Valley: Signature Cake @ Thirty 8, Grand Hyatt Hotel – KL has so many nice food place to explore! I am starting to miss the time exploring those beautiful cafe & restaurant in KL already. Although they are rather pricey, yet, I try to spend it budget-ly and experience the ambience and food fully.
So Thirty8 @ Grand Hyatt Hotel, located just right beside of Kuala Lumpur Convention, the name seems to be very ‘atas’ high-end and it’s not overly high-end as I expected. Haha. It get a bit confusing at first because I was not welcomed by the hotel lobby once I stepped into Grand Hyatt, instead I have to take the elevator to go to 38th floor, where the real Grand Hyatt Hotel’s lobby is, pretty interesting.
At just a level down the lobby, 37th, it’s where Thirty8 is, the hotel’s lounge. Having a 360 degree view of Kuala Lumpur, the view from here is just magnificent, and you will just in love with it. Pick a good spot, facing the Petronas Twin Towers preferably and enjoy your moment there.
It was an afternoon for my and Clarice. I think it would be even better at night, but afternoon gets to photograph easily with plenty of natural lighting, but then night view would be stunning too.
So, our main purpose was just to try their Thirty8 Signature Cake @ RM25 which literally is chocolate cake, but it’s more like mousse cake which is very soft. The special part of it is the presence of dry ice that create the smoking vapor effect which ‘WOW’ people. Topped with caramel and side with a banana ice cream, this dessert is very sweet! Yes, I mentioned very sweet. So beware if you are not into super-sweet dessert.
Next time, if there’s a chance again, I would like to try their ‘Straight From The Oven Chocolate Cake, Raspberry Sorbet, Vanilla Anglaise’, which is a highly recommended cake too!

  • Klang Valley: Paddington Garden, Sunway Giza

Klang Valley: Paddington Garden, Sunway Giza

Klang Valley: Paddington Garden, Sunway Giza – Paddington Garden is pancake specialized cafe located at Sunway Giza and serving the same menu that they had in Taiwan (yes, it’s from Taiwan). I went to for an afternoon tea to try out their pancake few weeks back, I thought I almost had found a similar nice pancake like the one I had at Hoshino Coffee in Singapore, but then it’s the pancake at Paddington Garden is just the other way around.
I am not a pancake-pro, but I like it to be sweet and something like what I had at Hoshino Cafe. I didn’t now what to order, and randomly ordered a Tiramisu Pancake. Turned out, it’s not what I wanted and it tasted somewhat, bitter with the espresso topping! HAHAHA. Well, I need sweet pancake, any recommendation?

  • Klang Valley: Awesome Tiramisu @ Alexis, Bangsar Shopping Centre

Klang Valley: Awesome Tiramisu @ Alexis, Bangsar Shopping Centre

Klang Valley: Awesome Tiramisu @ Alexis, Bangsar Shopping Centre – I am starting to miss this tiramisu from Alexis. The world is so big that there’s so many better food out there! Before this, I always thought of China House at Penang has the best tiramisu cake, but actually not, Alexis has even better one!
I actually get to know about it by a friend that she claimed that Alexis has a better one. This sparked my curiousity and no doubt, it is. Talking about Alexis, they serve various western cuisine, as well as fusion food too, but my visit was just for the sake of tiramisu. They have a few outlets, one at The Gardens, Mid Valley, another one is outside of Bangsar Village Mall, one is at Bangsar Shopping Centre (the one I went) and another one at Ampang.
It’s kind of ‘atas’ to me with a nicely decorated minimalist interior and if you come at certain nights, they have relaxing jazz music accompany your meal. Pretty cool! Too bad I am already back to Penang, don’t get much chance to visit again. Hmmm!
RM15 per piece. What’s good about the cake that it’s the sweetness is just nice and the cake is overloaded with caramel peacan which resulted the sweetness and the crunchyness of it. Cake itself is not too soft but the thing lack of is the alcohol taste. Some might not like the sweetness of it, but not me and comparing with China House, I’ll take this. Yay.
    Dear Clarice with the cake!

  • Klang Valley: Acme Bar & Coffee, Troika, Kuala Lumpur

Klang Valley: Acme Bar & Coffee, Troika, Kuala Lumpur

Klang Valley: Acme Bar & Coffee, Troika, Kuala Lumpur – Troika is one of my favourite building in Kuala Lumpur, designed by Foster & Partners architect and it’s standing beautifully just right across the KLCC park. It’s actually a high-end city condominium with restaurant at the mid-level sky bridge and also at the ground floor. Of course, it’s a high-end fine dining restaurant at the sky bridge on 24th floor, there’s also a bar as well as another Italian restaurant (unfortunately, only the Cantaloupe fine dining restaurant can get the best view of KLCC).
Coming back to Acme Bar & Coffee, or ABC in short, is another restaurant at Troika, but located on the ground floor. The restaurant, of course serve western cuisine, as well as food with a fusion of localized taste and price starts from RM25. It’s rather pricey, although some accept it because of the location and interior setup of the place. Don’t expect the premise to be big, it’s actually smaller than I expected, but the raw steel and wood design, blend with English-style design actually attracted my senses quite a lot.
Let’s talk about food. When people discusses about ABC, the first thing comes to mind must be their famous Cempadak (Jackfruit) Cake, but that’s desserts and served in the end. Of course, they have a good Smoked Buffalo Wings which we didn’t order, unfortunately. The menu’s variety is quite choice-ful and me and my friends were confused picking out our main course.
    Just Mac & Cheese – RM27.
Angel Hair Pasta with Scallops – RM-forget.  Another interesting dish with lots of pan-fried scallop.
Sambal Hebi Aglio Olio Spaghetti – RM31. Interesting combination of local and western taste with lots of shrimp.
Grilled Jumbo Hot Dog – RM-forget, but I know it’s the lowest price of all and my friend said it’s good! Yes, it indeed looks good.
Marinated Grilled Lamb Shoulder – RM-forget but it’s the priciest of all you see here. The portion is quite big which I promise a full stomach after this.
Cempedak (Jackfruit) Cake – RM15. The famous cake of this restaurant. Truly, the taste of jackfruit is very strong and powerful which will be pleasant for jackfruit lover.  Many complains it’s overrated, but yes I still like it, but not the price.
US! The food gang, the interior designers.

Yes, the food is very over-priced in my opinion, but it seems to be a nice place for hangout with friends actually. Food taste is still up to standard in my tastebuds and service was pleasant. If there’s a chance, I want to go back for a breakfast as they have different menu. After all, the down point is still the price, really pricey. Bahhh.

  • Klang Valley: Western-Style Breakfast At Antipodean, Bangsar

Klang Valley: Western-Style Breakfast At Antipodean, Bangsar

Klang Valley: Western-Style Breakfast At Antipodean, Bangsar – If you are looking for some western-style big breakfast set, or some croissant with scrambled egg, french toast and more, then Antipodean Cafe at Bangsar is the place for you. Some say it’s very good, some has gave me some unfavourable comment and how about me? Let’s check it out down below.
Antipodean Cafe is a well-established cafe in Jakarta and it came to Malaysia 2 years ago. Situating near the Bangsar Village Mall, the cafe gets really crowded during the weekends and it took about 20 minutes for us to get a seat inside during lunch time. The place is small and very cramp. Interestingly, there’s no menu, as in physical menu, it’s all written on the huge blackboard and pick it from there. Service was quite good actually as the staff was like keep updating us about the availability of seat when we were waiting out there.
    Mango Lassi was good!
    Big Breakfast.
So food! Big Breakfast, Croissant Scrambled Egg with Bacon & Vietnamese Fried Beef Noodle were what’s on our table that morning! The food presentation do look really good and the portion is quite big. Mine was the Big Breakfast but then it somehow seems ‘too-western’ for me because the scrambled egg was rather tasteless. The mushroom tasted special, something that I haven’t came across before, and I kinda like it.
Croissant With Scrambled Egg and Sausage.
    Vietnamese Beef Noodle.
Vietnamese Beef Noodle feels like char koay teow, but a sourish version. Quite interesting but not my type! Croissant was just croissant to me, you know, quite standard and the side dish like scrambled egg and sausage are just the same.
Well, I would just have to comment it’s something in between good and bad, might be I have an oriental taste bud, and it might be good for your western taste bud, perhaps?

Klang Valley: Beautiful Mess 5.0 of myBurgerLab

Klang Valley: Beautiful Mess 5.0 of myBurgerLab – A torrent of slaps fell on Friday night. I thought that with that kind of wet and roaring weather, people will tend to stay at home for meal or go somewhere near to grab a quick bite, but then the usual evening queue at myBurgerLab was on!
Indeed, the burger shop is doing very well. Queued for about 20 minutes and the burger of the night was Beautiful Mess 5.0 (RM18) – Charcoal bun stuffed with portobella fries, thick and juicy beef patties, sunny side up, and mozarella cheese.
One more thing, thumbs up for the good service of myBurgerLab’s staff who always put a smile on the face. =D Another thing is that they should seriously a bigger space is needed, it’s hard to get a place to sit.
BEAUTIFUL MESS 5.0! Look at the deep fried portobella!

  • Klang Valley: Three Little Pigs & The Big Bad Wolf

Klang Valley: Three Little Pigs & The Big Bad Wolf

Klang Valley: Three Little Pigs & The Big Bad Wolf – The pork crave still haven’t ends in me yet since the last pork meal at S.Wine, it’s not the craving for siu yok or cha siu, it’s Western version of pork dish and I want more! Last weekend, I went to this pork shop – Three Little Pigs & The Big Bad Wolf at Bangsar Village Mall (what a long name?!). Very easy to spot as it’s located just by the car park.
I was there for a late birthday lunch with Clarice, it’s almost 3pm already, but the restaurant was really packed with people, mostly ladies! I wonder where are the guys? Almost tea time and the people just never stop walking in from the front door.
Since it’s just two of us, we got a table pretty quickly. Without much hesitation, my order went to the two famous dishes The Wolf’s Favourite (RM27+) and also the Mighty Pork Burger (RM24+). Serving was pretty fast, surprisingly for that much people in the restaurant.
The Wolf’s Favourite is their signature pasta which basically is carbonara enhanced with smoky pork and mushrooms, further topped up with a beautiful poached egg. It’s fragrance is good, the pork feels like bak gua to me and the combination of poached egg creates a unique carbonara experience, without the cream. It’s a little bit salty on my taste buds, but undeniably, still OK-good.
If were to choose between the two dishes, my choice went to the Mighty Pork Burger which has a thick juicy pork patty which I still can imagine biting a mouth of it right now. Egg was just a compliment to the burger which I find it like McBreakfast egg, but still, I like the tender pork patty. Will come back again for some other pork dish!

  • Klang Valley: Banana Leaf Rice @ Sri Nirvana Maju, Bangsar

Klang Valley: Banana Leaf Rice @ Sri Nirvana Maju, Bangsar

Klang Valley: Banana Leaf Rice @ Sri Nirvana Maju, Bangsar – Wanted to try this for quite some times, and finally I’ve got a chance. I’ve heard quite some good reviews and seeing it always packed during lunch and dinner, the Sri Nirvana Maju Indian cuisine must be good I assumed.
Located right opposite of Bangsar Village Mall, this little Indian restaurant serves rice on banana leaf as well as other Indian dish with a blend of local taste. I’ve read that people complained about the price went up in just a year and two, however looking at the crowds, the price increased did not shoo people away.
Banana leaf rice was the dinner for me and my girlfriend. Each set costs RM7 and comes with rice, papadum and 3 vegetables – deep fried bittergourd, cucumbers and cabbage, as well as deep fried chillies. You can opt for 3 types of gravy to add a bit of spiciness and aroma to the rice – dalcha, chicken curry, fish curry. That’s the vegetarian meal of banana leaf rice. I find it too vegetarian and added 2 side dishes – sambal boiled egg and chicken masala.
Everything was fine, spiciness was at a good level and the portion was just too big! Ended with a satisfaction and Clarice couldn’t finish her rice. It was indeed pricey at RM27 for 2 person, but nevertheless, it’s a good meal.
Sit back, wait, see and enjoy your meal.

  • Klang Valley: S.Wine Cafe @ Publika, Solaris Dutamas

Klang Valley: S.Wine Cafe @ Publika, Solaris Dutamas

Klang Valley: S.Wine Cafe @ Publika, Solaris Dutamas – Oh pork, recently I am addicted to pork and found this nice pork restaurant at Publika, Solaris Dutamas. To be exact, it’s located in the grocery – Ben’s Independent Grocers (B.I.G.). I actually went there once but failed to eat because we were late and ended up with Namoo On The Park. Lesson learned, and I was there earlier than before!
When you go to grocery shopping in Malaysia, normally the pork section is separated from the rest because it’s Non-Halal. Well, the S.Wine Cafe is located at the Non-Halal section and also right beside the alcohol section of B.I.G. Pretty interesting.
Pork is the main thing there and so all the dishes were all about pork. We’ve got pork chop, pork meatball, and pork sausage wrapped with bacon. Yummeh. Food presentation and the interiors are quite nice. Taste on the other hand is heavier than Betty’s Kitchen (I prefer the gravy at Betty’s though) and what I like about is the texture of the pork, it felt nice comparing to local Chinese pork dish. Wonder what pigs do they use? Haha. Well, the price was on the high side, but given a good atmosphere and food, it justifies. S.Wine, I’m pretty much I will come back again, perhaps bring my parents for a try.
Good food and good people. Good people of the night – Siyi, Connie, Jason, me, Henry, Hooipheng and Quenna.
    Caesar sald.
    Tomato soup.
    Mini pork sausage with bacon.
    The pork chop!
Look at the oily part of the pork, I just can’t put that into my body! Sinful!
