Penang: RM2.50 Hokkien Prawn Mee For Breakfast, Jalan Perak – Yes, you read it right, a bowl of Hokkien Prawn Mee in Penang is only RM2.50! (Selected place only, haha). Anyway, this was my breakfast few days back in Penang and it was at Jalan Perak, introduced to me by Yiphing.

My favourite food in Penang.

It’s not the best hokkien mee out there and one thing interesting about Penang food is that most of the local food, doesn’t matter famous or not, they are still OKOK-quite-good. For this kind of price, nothing much you can complain for a morning breakfast. By the way, there’s a very famous and better Hokkien Prawn Mee around that area too, but sold out quite early.

Funny to see the technology MP (Member of Parliament) Jeff Ooi at the back of t-shirt in the kopitiam.

Update: Latest news is that it has increase price to RM2.70, don’t know true or not.

Famous Perak Road Market Hokkien Prawn Mee – When I write “famous” on my title, it means it’s famous and many people knows about it. The Hokkien Prawn Mee at the Perak Road Wet Market is really famous as every morning, many people wait for take away as well as eat at there. The stall owners are always seen as busy taking order and preparing the delicious Penang food, the Hokkien Prawn Mee.

Located in the wet market of Perak Road, which cannot be seen on main road, this Hokkien Mee stall is well-known in the area and it’s also known as Ah Keong Hokkien Mee. Besides selling Hokkien Mee, it also includes Lor Mee in the menu.

I went there for breakfast with my Penang friends, ordered 5 bowls of beehoon and mee combination and then look for a place to sit. It’s not easy to find a open table as it’s always occupied, especially on weekends’ morning. Waited 15 minutes and the famous prawn noodle finally came.

Presentation of the noodle does not look pretty, yet I spotted little shrimp in it and the soup does indeed look tempting. At only RM2.80 per bowl for a medium size (RM2.50 for small and RM3.20 for big), it’s a good portion of breakfast for me. Though, there’s still extra space for food.

Prawn noodle is always about the soup. The soup makes it deliciously good in the mouth with an adequate amount of prawn taste, not too over, yet not too light. The additional chilli paste add an extra spicy sense into the soup which makes it perfect. Somehow, shrimps were too little to make it a perfect bowl of Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee.

Overall, I will come back for it, if I have plenty of time to wait. Take away might be faster than eating there by the way. Try not to complain or re-ask about your order as this will make the owner frustrated and she will be talking this and that back.

Nice Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee At TTDI

I am back to Subang Jaya people and I am again in search for the best Penang food available here. Sounds weird right? Being in Klang Valley looking for a food that’s not origin from here, just because I couldn’t resist the deliciousness of my hometown food and I miss them much just after a few days of living hometown.

Famous food blogger, who is also a Penangite residing in KL, KYSpeaks introduced me a few places to hunt for Penang food. Arron, a friend from Penang and I went to hunt for the Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee (known as prawn mee to the KL peeps) and we came to a place call TTDI (Taman Tun Dr Ismail). It’s somewhere between Tropicana City and Bandar Utama.

Hokkien Prawn Mee is one of the top 3 famously delicious Penang food with Asam Laksa and Char Koay Teow. If you ask me to pick one, I fancy all of them, but I like Asam Laksa even more, the world’s number 7 most delicious as rated by CNN. Nevertheless, I love them all.

In the vicinity of a Cantonese and Malay speaking city, there hides a Hokkien speaking aunty who operate the Hokkien Prawn Mee stalls in a kopitiam named Restaurant Yong Len on Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad 1.

As usual, I ordered a bowl of Hokkien Prawn Mee – Bee Hoon Mee (combination of rice noodle and Chinese yellow noodle) RM4.30. The bowl of Hokkien Prawn Mee came within a few minutes and to my surprise, its outlook cheered my food sight up. The crispy fried shallots, little shrimps pieces, noodle, slices of pork meat, beansprouts and the chilli paste are just so right. Its presentation didn’t failed me and shocked me with huge shrimps. I dislike having huge shrimps swimming in a bowl of hokkien prawn mee as it’s so not authentic. It’s sort of modified by the KL locals.

Chilli paste was spicy enough which does not burn my throat or salten my taste bud. I have came across some hokkien prawn mee in KL that the chilli paste was in fact a red salted paste. Upon flooding my mouth with the soup of prawn, it feels good and like there’s a shrimp swimming down my throat. The crunchy shallots gave the soup a little tweaks to be even better.

Best part of all is that when you reach the bottom of the bowl, a scoop of the soup reveal many small little shrimp which just makes your teeth feel busy and good.

Well, this is currently my favourite Penang Hokkien Prawn Mee stall in Klang Valley, the next would be SS15 Asia Cafe and I will definitely come back to this little place.

Hokkien Mee For Dinner At Pulau Tikus Market

Didn’t feel like eating rice and wanted to eat some hawker food so I went to Pulau Tikus Market hawker stalls to scope for some hawker food. Same again, 6 weeks I never go to hawker stall already but my parents did buy me hawker food during Sunday visit for National Service (PLKN).

At first I was thinking to eat Wan Tan Mee, but somehow this big Hokkien Mee signboard on the stall caught my attention and I was thinking “Hmm. When does a Hokkien Mee stall appear here?” Because there wasn’t a Hokkien Mee stall there and it was far far away at the end of the market. Could this be a new one?

I can’t resist myself to order a bowl to try it. I ordered instant noodle typed, there’s egg, little bit of vegetable, a little bit of meat and very tiny prawn. My verdict is, not good enough. Somehow, I still like the one at Lebuh Presgrave. I’ll show you guys next time. =)
