Norm Micro Roastery Combines Good Coffee With Minimalist Warehouse Interiors

Cafe scene in Penang is very interesting with new cafe popping up now and then, but the good one stays long and the least interesting one got of the cafe-game soon. One of my favourite – Norm Cafe has a new outlet at Church Street Ghaut.

House in a refurbish warehouse, the bare and crisp minimalist setup does makes a good backdrop for Instagram-hispter and interior-lover like me. Not many seatings are available in this spacious warehouse setting though – which is a plus! However, it was still that busy and crowded on my last visit (just before the COVID-19 lock down in Malaysia).

Unlike the original Norm Cafe, Norm Micro Roastery serves coffee and brunch; as the name explains, they roast their own coffee here.

What makes a good cafe for hopping is the space composition and this cafe does has the recipe for it.

Note: There’s beautiful little green mosses and if you do visit, do be careful and not step on them. It’s the indoor landscape that complement the overall setting.

    Opens daily 9am – 11pm

13, Gat Lebuh Gereja, 10300 George Town, Penang.

Two Buns, A Very Hipster Burger & Booze Restaurant

Update: Our last visit (Nov 19) shows that this awesome burger eatery has closed down. Sad.

Two Buns, a very hispter burger shop on Carnavon Street, blends well with beer, that’s where their tagline comes in – ‘Burger & Booze’.

Hello, I am back again, after hiatus for more than a year and I find it exciting to write a blog post, sharing good food; and no, this is not a sponsored post. Just came across this hipster outlet a few days back while running errand in town. The artsy minimalist decorated eatery caught my attention, and the combination of burger and beers is just tempting.

Invited a few friends along on a Saturday night for a burger night out. Burger starts from RM10, and bottled Tiger, Heineken, Guinness and imported craft beer are available. Settled with a bucket of the mighty Tiger (RM65) and a Don Pablo (RM15) burger for myself.

Don Pablo – Deep Fried Chicken, Bacon & Cheese sandwhich is fragrant sesame bun.

Char Siu Pork Burger, sweet enough but I still like Don Pablo more.

Thai-style Sio Bak (Roasted Pork) with sweet chilli sauce. Crispy enough, but cooled when serve. Got to improve a little on that yo.

I was just happy that they are not another black charcoal burger copy-cat. I am sicked of everyone copying each other. Classic sesame bun is still the best.

One thing that needed to improve – THE LONG WAITING TIME!

Two Buns – Burger & Booze is at No. 177, Lebuh Carnavon, 11000 George Town. See their Facebook page for more detail. Parking is available by the roadside!

  • Penang: Mugshot Cafe, Chulia Street

    Penang: Mugshot Cafe, Chulia Street

Penang: Mugshot Cafe, Chulia Street – Haven’t been home for quite some times and just realised that there’s so many new cafes pop up around town! Mugshot Cafe is a new one (might not new to Penangite but me) at Chulia Street, right opposite the famous Wan Tan Mee or just next to the Rainforest Bakery.

I’m wondering how to describe this kind of cafe. It’s retro-ish, a bit of artsy fartsy and a little bit similar to Burps & Giggles of Ipoh. Heritage artsy style? There’s so many in town right now. I went on a Sunday afternoon and it’s kinda hard to get a seat there. The seating is kinda cute with low table and chair like in the kindergarten.

There’s not much in the menu, you can find coffee and tea, some cakes, homemade yogurt, and bagel muffin. That’s it. Bagels were sold out and it’s only cake and yogurt for me. The carrot cake was good, sweet enough for my sweet tooth and the apple crumble was nice too according to my mom, but then I think I am not an apple crumble person, I don’t like the sourish apple in it. HAHA. Another thing I ordered was the Walnuts & Raisins Yogurt which I find it too sourish too, should have tried Jackfruit & Gula Melaka!
Raisin & Walnut Yogurt. Too sour for me.
    Carrot Cake.
    Apple Crumble Pie.
After all, this seems to be a good place for an afternoon tea and to chill. Will be back to try their bagel muffin.

  • Penang: The Twelve Cups – Awesome Mille Crepe

Penang: The Twelve Cups – Awesome Mille Crepe

    Entrance from Beach Street.

Penang: The Twelve Cups – Awesome Mille Crepe – Malacca has a very famous attraction which is the Nadeje Mille Crepe Cafe, people who goes to Malacca will surely visit it for a try. So, mille crepe, the ang mo-style of layer cake is now available in Penang, no need to go until Malacca to try, moreover this one is not bad too!

    The GOOD wall.
    The counter.
    The counter again.

Located at Beach Street, in a very cool colonial-style building of WhiteAways Arcade is The Twelve Cups Cafe where you can find brew coffee and of course, the Mille Crepe cake. Actually it’s my friend – Huan Sheng who is the designer of the cafe, that introduced to this cafe, and also, the cafe is own by his friend, and that’s why. Haha. Being an interior design student, I am always checking out new cafes and retail outlet to get more inspiration. Well, the interiors is freshy, clean and contemporary, might say is today’s style of cafe.

Hokkaido Chocolate Crepe, the in-house signature Mille Crepe which I like and rather small.

Cut the crap and let’s check out the one and only mille crepe Clarice and I ordered. Haha. It’s the Hokkaido Chocolate Crepe (RM10.90), with chocolate layering, the strong aroma of milk melted in my tongue, give me a refreshing sense of sweetness and satisfaction. Yes, it’s nice. However, the portion is a little bit small in my opinion and it should be cut bigger. =) Sky juice is free by the way. XD

I will come back again for more!
