Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee Bar On A Sunday Afternoon

Singapore: Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee Bar On A Sunday Afternoon – Also known as CSHH is coffee roaster Papa Palheta’s flagship store in Singapore which in Malaysia, there’s also one cafe – PULP by Papa Palheta in Bangsar that is also part of its family.

As one of the most popular coffee houses in Singapore, Chye Seng Huat Hardware was in the list of my first cafe hopping’s itinerary. Well, I maybe too late into checking out this place, but it’s always late then never.

Singapore has sort of became my second home which I visit very frequently at least once a month. Cafe hopping in Singapore had been one of my to-do activity whenever I am there. Last Sunday’s afternoon was to check out this hardware shop turned cafe. A little bit of Google shows that CSHH was one of the first “integrated concept” cafes consisting a roastery, workshop, coffee tasting room and a store – all under one roof.

Although it’s accessible by MRT, but the hot weather just forced us to take the cab to the place. We were greeted by the original hardware shopfront but the main entrance is on the side. Interior amazed me a lot with a central communal coffee bar/preparation/cashier/seating. The industrial/modern setup is cozy and hipster enough for you to Instagram all day long.

It was a good escape out of the scorching humid weather of Singapore and the Cold Brew did chill and spice up the day!

  • Penang: Lighthouse Coffee, Bishop Street

    Penang: Lighthouse Coffee, Bishop Street

Penang: Lighthouse Coffee – Drinking a cup of aromatic coffee in the core of UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town, Penang, together with a small slice of cake just bring the relaxing experience to a greater level. Coffee shops are popping up here and there in this little city of George Town. The recent one that I have visited was Lighthouse Coffee, located in Logan Heritage by Bishop Street, it’s just off the famous Beach Street which is filled with colonial-styles building.
It is a very small cafe which serve coffee of course, a great variety of coffee and desserts cake. I am not a coffee addict, it’s just something to drink for relaxing and to freshen up the mind. So, I went to check around Foursquare and has got some recommendation which is the Mochaccino and tiramisu.
Well then, Mochaccino and a small slice of Tiramisu was accompanying me and Clarice in the hot sunny afternoon. The Mochaccino was good, the aroma of coffee beans and a little bit taste of chocolate did indeed brings pleasant stream through my taste buds and down my throat.
Tiramisu on the other hand blends well between the alcohol and the sweetness. Somehow, the texture was not spongy enough and I still prefer the one at China House. However, this is up to the level too for a good tiramisu. It’s just that it has a very small portion.
So, if you are craving for a coffee and a good quiet place for your afternoon, do check out Lighthouse Coffee.

  • Penang: The Twelve Cups – Awesome Mille Crepe

Penang: The Twelve Cups – Awesome Mille Crepe

    Entrance from Beach Street.

Penang: The Twelve Cups – Awesome Mille Crepe – Malacca has a very famous attraction which is the Nadeje Mille Crepe Cafe, people who goes to Malacca will surely visit it for a try. So, mille crepe, the ang mo-style of layer cake is now available in Penang, no need to go until Malacca to try, moreover this one is not bad too!

    The GOOD wall.
    The counter.
    The counter again.

Located at Beach Street, in a very cool colonial-style building of WhiteAways Arcade is The Twelve Cups Cafe where you can find brew coffee and of course, the Mille Crepe cake. Actually it’s my friend – Huan Sheng who is the designer of the cafe, that introduced to this cafe, and also, the cafe is own by his friend, and that’s why. Haha. Being an interior design student, I am always checking out new cafes and retail outlet to get more inspiration. Well, the interiors is freshy, clean and contemporary, might say is today’s style of cafe.

Hokkaido Chocolate Crepe, the in-house signature Mille Crepe which I like and rather small.

Cut the crap and let’s check out the one and only mille crepe Clarice and I ordered. Haha. It’s the Hokkaido Chocolate Crepe (RM10.90), with chocolate layering, the strong aroma of milk melted in my tongue, give me a refreshing sense of sweetness and satisfaction. Yes, it’s nice. However, the portion is a little bit small in my opinion and it should be cut bigger. =) Sky juice is free by the way. XD

I will come back again for more!

Malacca: Happenings Night @ Geographer Cafe, Jonker Walk

Malacca: Happenings Night @ Geographer Cafe, Jonker Walk – Every Friday and Saturday night, this street – Jalan Hang Jebat, or widely known as Jonker Walk came alive with big crowds of people walking along the street with stalls selling food, souvenir, clothing as well as pub, cafe decorated with many antiques.

This is the best part of Malacca and always very happenings during the weekend’s night. Shopping and street food were not our main activity that night as we had filled our stomach with Satay Celup. So, we chilled out at the Geographer Cafe, together with some live band and beer.

The night was simple yet, fun. It’s just a relaxing night and talking around with friends, fostering relationship and getting to know more about each other. Live band was OK, playing with oldies song that some I’ve heard before.

The whole street turned into a trash street after midnight. At about 1.30am, we went back home. The place was quiet then. By the way, you can find various cocktails and food too at this Geographer Cafe.

  • Ochado Signature Bubble Tea @ Paradigm Mall

Ochado Signature Bubble Tea @ Paradigm Mall – It’s post about Paradigm Mall again, I am not promoting, just can’t help myself from sharing with you guys of what I have tried at the mall. Here’s another F&B outlet I went in Paradigm Mall – Ochado Signature bubble tea cafe. I believe many of you have heard about Ochado. =D

Ochado Signature Bubble Tea @ Paradigm Mall

Last time, I was a Taiwanese bubble fan, but now, I don’t really drink a lot because it’s fattening, but then I still drink occasionally. There’s many bubble tea outlet in Paradigm Mall, like Each A Cup, Chatime, Meet Fresh, and more I think. But then this Ochado Signature is the most appealing to me with a nice, simple and clean cafe design, which is a good place to chit chat with friends.

Ochado Signature Bubble Tea @ Paradigm Mall

Ochado Signature Bubble Tea @ Paradigm Mall

I visited the cafe on the first day went to Paradigm Mall with Arron and Carmen, we wanted a place to sit down and talk and found this. I am not really familiar with Ochado’s beverage, I am more to Chatime and Gongcha. After looking at the menu, I ordered myself a Ochado Pop Egg Milk Tea.

Ochado Signature Bubble Tea @ Paradigm Mall

Ochado Signature Bubble Tea @ Paradigm Mall

Pop Egg is a pearl replacement in the milk tea and it pops once it’s in your mouth, kinda like caviar, but cheap version. It pops out a sweet taste. Well, it’s fun popping in your mouth but then I prefer bubble pearl which allows me to chew. Pop egg is too fast and has no sensation in the mouth. By the way, it costs RM5.90 for the regular cup of Pop Egg Milk Tea.

Cool Cafe – +Wondermilk, Damansara Uptown – +Wondermilk Cafe is a very cool cafe located in Damasara Uptown. The cafe is decorated with many artsy stuff like decal, photoframe, typography, warm lighting and has nice cafe music playing along.

As for the beverage, I ordered a Minty Lime Chiller (RM8.90) which is lime + soda + mint leaves which is very refreshing and quenching. It’s kinda expensive, I can make the same thing at home. Haha.

Poco Homemade – Homemade Desserts & Art Craft Cafe (Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur) – Poco Homemade is a cafe located in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, mainly selling daily western and Japanese-style of homemade desserts like cake. Besides, they do sell simple Japanese dishes like Curry Katsu, and some local-style lunch meal. On top of that, it’s also a art craft store, selling handmade cute collections.

The cafe is very unique and different from a typical kopitiam in Malaysia, or Starbucks. I went there with a few friends to check out the place for a project but later this place was rejected by the lecturer. Nevertheless, we did have a nice afternoon at there.

Poco Homemade - Cozy Homemade Desserts & Art Craft Cafe

Located in the housing area of Bangsar, Poco Homemade looks different from others shop at the area. The blue color entrance looks so-not-like-Malaysia and upon entering, it felt very cozy, very warm and relaxing with nice French cafe music playing on the background.

The interior decor is very simple, with lots of art crafts decorations at every corner of the cafe and filled with retro second hand furniture. In there, I do not feel like I am in Malaysia, it’s like somewhere else, Taiwan, Japan, Northern Europe maybe.

There is a wall showcasing customer’s writeup on “My Ambition”, something that is usually done during primary school time for the first essay writing. The cafe some times used for workshop, and mini music session.

We were happy to chat with the kind owner, she said that she was inspired to open such cafe with her husband after visiting this kind of cafe in Japan.

We ordered some in-house special desserts to try out, price wise is not really cheap because of the small portion Every pax has to order a drink minimum which I don’t really like about this.

Homemade Custard Cake (RM9), this is very soft, not too sweet and I find it very pleasing and nice.

Dacquoise (Matcha flavour) (RM12), a kind of dessert cake from France made with layers of almond mergue and buttercream. Well it’s crunchy, and the mid part is creamy like ice cream. It’s not so crunchy like a biscuit, yet it’s just feel like another kind of biscuit to me. Very special, very nice, but not cheap for just only two pieces. Haha.

Poco Homemade - Cozy Homemade Desserts & Art Craft Cafe
Soya Green Tea (RM6), nice combination of green tea and soya milk. I taste soya milk more, but there’s taste of green tea too. Good!

Well, the place is very enjoying and calm. It felt very peaceful and seems as if away from the busy city of Kuala Lumpur. You need not to travel to Northern Europe or Japan to experience this kind of cafe. =D

  • Kopi C @ China House – Cafe & Gallery In Heritage Shophouse

Kopi C @ China House – Cafe & Gallery In Heritage Shophouse

Kopi C @ China House – Cafe & Gallery In Heritage Shophouse – Penang has many colonial-style shophouses which are very beautiful and retro located in the heart of UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town. Nowadays, many of these shophouses are refurbished and converted into heritage hotel, inn, cafe, gallery and gift shop.

China House is a good use of colonial-style shophouses converted into a shophouse with gallery, cafe, restaurants, retail and a place to chill and relax with your friends. In China House, there’s many different section, one section is the Kopi C (known as Kopi Cine) which serves nice coffee and freshly baked cakes and desserts.

Initially, I was thinking of having a nice afternoon tea at Kopi Cine, Muntri Street, later only found out that it has moved into China House. So I went to search for the China House. It’s located on Beach Street, before the old fire station. The China House is linked together with the shophouse at the back, which reveal a long and narrow interior.

The interior of Kopi C is very retro, blended old Penang’s  decorations with Chinese & Western-style. I ordered their in-house special cake – Tiramisu (RM12/slice) and a slice of Mushroom Quiche (RM8/slice) which is a pie filled with mushroom and onion.

With some soft music, Kopi C is indeed a nice hangout spot in the afternoon, for good cakes, good chat and good environment. Hueisean loves the place a lot, and the Tiramisu too! Besides housing the Kopi C, China House also houses a gallery at the 2nd level, an open space for event, a Chinese restaurant, a courtyard, a reading zone and also a bar with live music at night.

  • Bubble Milk Oolong Tea – LOHAS Tea Shop, Bukit Mertajam

Bubble Milk Oolong Tea – LOHAS Tea Shop, Bukit Mertajam

Bubble Milk Oolong Tea - LOHAS Tea Shop, Bukit Mertajam
    #1.

Bubble Milk Oolong Tea – LOHAS Tea Shop, Bukit Mertajam – Chinese loves bubble tea very much, so do I! I am a super bubble tea fan, it’s so much better than Starbucks Coffee although they are two different category of beverage. With the rise of famous international brand like Chatime, Gong Cha, Share Tea and more, local bubble tea shops are trying very hard to compete with them as people tend to go for a more famous brand.

Despite the many brand of bubble tea in town, e.g. Chatime, Gong Cha, Each A Cup, Fresh (Penang), LOHAS (Penang), Cool Blog, I realised that people are still trying to create another bubble tea brand.

    #2: Clean and simple interior.

Recently, my dearest Hueisean introduced me a less known to the Penang-island people bubble tea brand – LOHAS Tea Shop, which is located in Bukit Mertajam. LOHAS is quite well-known at Bukit Mertajam before the arriving of Chatime and has been a hangout spot for the young for some times.

    #3: The menu in Chinese.

The cafe has a simple decoration, yet it brings out a minimalist and warm sense with the illuminating panel. I like the brand name too – LOHAS, which actually means Lifestyle Of Health And Sustainable in general term. Looking at the menu, it offers bubble tea just like any other typical bubble tea shop, but at a lower price and they do serve little snack food too. This is what makes it stand out from others.

#4: Wifi is available in the cafe.

    #5: Simple packaging.

I ordered a cup of regular size Bubble Milk Oolong Tea with Pearl (RM4.00 + RM0.50 for pearl). I quite like the price for the cup of bubble tea as normally, I have to pay RM5.90 – RM6.90 for a similar cup of bubble tea at the well-known brand.

    #6: The bubble tea.

The bubble is quite chewy in my opinion, and the oolong tea taste is there, however it would be better if the essence, the taste of the tea can be stronger. Overall, it’s OK-good, I like it because of the price, as well of the not-bad-ness.

If you ever to be in Bukit Mertajam, do pay a visit if you are a bubble tea fans.
