When there’s a major examination is coming, our local UPSR, PMR, SPM, PMR or O Level, A Level and whatever, local students or parents of student will go to the Guleng Hood Temple to pray and get some blessing hoping to score and do well in the exam.
Guleng Hood is more to be known by the Penangites, it’s actually means Milk Buddha. Guleng is milk, and Hood is Buddha in the local Hokkien dialect. The real name of the temple is called Mahindarama Temple and is runs by some Indian monks.
My uncle brought me there last year because of the PMR examination, this year I went there again to return the vow. Today, I got a chance to go there again because my brother want to go there to pray and as he got a pretty good result in A Level. I was thinking to go to the Tua Pek Kong Temple in downtown, but then mom was in a rush, so we went to the Guleng Hood temple which was nearer to us at that time.
Joss sticks are free there, just put in some donation of your choice in the box if you wish to after getting 9 joss sticks.
Saying that am I a free thinker? I think it’s just partially, Buddhism is still guide of life.
When I said students come here to pray for hoping to get good result in exams, they write letters and notes for Buddha. This is the box where they drop in the paper, then I wonder who will go through all the papers, the monk?
As usual, prayed for good health, good wealth, happy life and good study. =)
