Away to PLKN (Day 30): PCGHS Food Fair
Written by Nicholas Chan on April 26, 2010 – 2:08 pm -On 14 March 2010, I went to Penang Chinese Girls’ High School to check out their food fair. It had been quite some time I didn’t visit school organized food fair. In 2006, my school organized a food fair, but I was not there because I went outstation, that’s sad because Chung Ling High School don’t always organise food fair.
When I was Form 4, I attended Convent Datuk Keramat Secondary School food fair, could be said as my first time going to a school’s food fair. Then this PCGHS Food Fair could be my second time already.
Food fair are always fun with game stalls but not the food. I actually go there to check up stalls by Leo Club of Penang Chinese Girls’ High School, to see what they did and support support them. I don’t really know a lot of friends from that school except the Leo Club.

DSLR gang, Kelvin and Teik Hua.
I went there at around 10am. It’s all traffic jam already at Jalan Gottlieb, the road outside PCGHS, all because of the food fair. Luckily I found a good parking spot. Went in alone and look for Leo Club’s booth. Later then Arron, Tee Jin, Chien Chern and Yiphing came and I went to join them
The Leo Club was a game booth. Their game was fishing, each player pays RM2 for a game and do like the Japanese style of fishing with a piece of paper instead of net. You can take home the fish you got. So it’s like buying fish at there. Haha.
Very hot day and keep sweating all the way. I met many Chung Ling juniors, friends, bloggers and Plurkers. Many people, very crowded, very happening, and I like, just I really hate the weather.

Plurkers.
I was hungry and I ate my breakfast at there. Unfortunately, the food I ate sucks, it’s a Japanese Fried Rice. But gonna thank Arron for the sponsor of coupon so it was a free breakfast for that morning.
There’s many food, many things, many game stall. There’s also haunted house but we didn’t get a chance to go in because it’s closed when we were there. Sucks man. We thought that the Q would be shorter when we go in at the last minute, but they said the ghosts were tired already, so early closure. Oops.

Edmond, Hanna, Hui Mei and Liang Sun.

Lion Ong Lai was there too! My Regional District Chairperson for Leo Club and also Kok Sheng, vice president for Leo Cabinet.
That morning was pretty fun also, but very hot.

Day 4 of SPM
Written by Nicholas Chan on November 24, 2009 – 12:24 am -Day 4 has gone and I still have to say, so far so good. Today’s Mathematics paper was relatively easy. What’s challenging will still be the Additional Mathematics paper.
But then I got to say I love today’s paper so much because it’s easy and enjoy doing it fast. Don’t know why I felt so sleepy, after finishing the question, I took a short rest on top of the table. I thought of rechecking my answer after a few minutes of rest, but I fell asleep, seeing that the time left was only 5 minutes, so didn’t get to check everything but still, feeling good with my answer, confidence and my sleep.
The school holiday has began today, everyone is sleeping at home and I am having exam, that’s the standard thing. This also means that the canteen auntie and uncle take their days off, going for a hiatus for two month, meaning too, I don’t get to eat canteen food anymore.
Luckily there’s still one stall opens, trying to earn extra cash during the holiday and they sell fried rice and char siew rice, not very tasty but out of choice and hungry, still have to eat.
Tomorrow will me Moral Ed paper, you heard it right, we have Moral Education as one of our paper in such a big exam, a lot of memorizing to do and good luck for it, hope my mind don’t forget everything. I will be back after before noon because this paper ends at 10.30am.

Temple Visits Before SPM Examination
Written by Nicholas Chan on November 10, 2009 – 12:20 am -Now I can’t deny that we, a bunch of high school students are not superstitious. No offence to other religions, we are buddhist and we went to as many as 7 temples lately for prayers and blessing for the coming big, massive SPM exam which is O Level equivalent.
Organized by I don’t know who, but it’s all my classmate and skipped school together on a Wednesday and went for the temples trip around Penang. Since I was free and it’s something must-do to me, so I went to join them. There’s like, 11 of us.
First stop was Mahindarama Temple or more likely to known as Guleng Hood. It’s a famous place and everyone loves going there before exam for blessing. I had actually went there the week before this and so this was my second visit for this year. There’s no restriction on how many time you can pray.
They actually had a blessing ceremony for SPM students last Sunday but I find no reason why want to join the crowds and wake up early. I prefer going on some other time where there’s little people.
Go to Guleng Hood must bring a couple of milk and your exam time table. That’s the standard procedure, then look for the sifu monk in the house for blessing.
Spent like an hour at Guleng Hood and we were off to another place and that is the Penang Buddhist Association. This place is quite happenings during Wesak Day. It became so quiet on normal days.
Don’t want to talk so much about what happened there. Basically, it’s just prayers for good health, good result and good everything.
Next was the Siamese temple, Wat Buppharam on Perak Road. Tried the 50cents electronic fortune teller, but it didn’t work for me. Too bad. We actually visited another one, Malaysia Buddhist Association on Burma Rd, it’s just a very short visit.
Then off to Burma Lane (Lorong Burma) to visit the two temple. A Siamese temple (Wat Chaiyamangkalaram) and a Dhammikarama Burmese temple. Living in Penang for 17 years, this was my first time and we were just like tourist at there. Everyday past by the place, thinking that it’s just another temple and small, but everything I thought weren’t true.
The compound, the garden, the statue are big. Inside is very pretty and clean. It just doesn’t feel “Penang” to me, it’s more like being in Thailand.
There’s a rotating thing inside the Burmese temple where you can aim and throw coins into it. Each different bowl representing different thing which you pray/wish for, etc. Health, Prosperity, Education, Marriage, Good Lucks.

The Siamese Temple lies the reclining Buddha.
Last week was the Loy Krathong, a Thai festival where people release boat with candles and written wishes into the sea. We bought a boat and wrote our wishes on it and they were release into the sea at Gurney Drive.
After so many temples, finally we had came to our last stop. The Penang’s Kuan Yin Temple at Pitt Street. It’s not first or 15th of the Lunar calendar, so it’s not that crowded. Usually it’s full of devotees during those days.
Parents bring their children who are sitting for exam here too. Mom did bring me here 2 years ago when I was sitting for PMR and now, it’s friend who brought me there instead of my mom. To pray for good studies and education, we looked for the Confucious and Wen Chang Gong. =)
So, after that many prayers and temple visit, doesn’t mean that we need not to study already, it’s just a kind of believing. Good luck everyone!

Chung Ling Moral Club lunch at KFC
Written by Nicholas Chan on October 22, 2009 – 12:15 am -Last Monday, I went to the biggest KFC house on Larut Road on invitation by many of my school’s Moral Club member. They were having their Moral Club farewell lunch and there’s extra seat and I am a friend of many of their high committee, so I was invited to join them for lunch.
On the other hand, I need to help them on the camera for their group shot. Shooting is my hobby so it’s not a problem at all.
Their group shot and the teacher advisor is Wong Chu Ming.
I went home after the lunch. It’s raining and I got no place to go, so home. Thank you Moral Club. Haha.
