He Bought a Canon 500D
Written by Nicholas Chan on December 22, 2009 – 1:09 am -Let’s talk about last week, I brought my brother to my favourite camera shop, the place where I bought my Canon EOS 400D.
I have been to a few camera shops to buy accessories, I realised that service is very important, there’s shop on Penang Road made me felt fucked up because the people simply quote me price and was so not honest, I don’t like that kind of service, I know what they are up to. So service is very important, be friendly to customer and they will come back again.
I personally recommends Matthew at Click N Snap if you are looking for camera accessories. Doing free advertising for him, wonder do I get any privilege or commission? Haha.
Brother wanted to look for a DSLR but he don’t want to buy in Singapore because the price here is cheaper. We spent like a few hours in the shop because he couldn’t make up his mind. After a long long consideration, he finally bought the Canon EOS 500D body with a Tamron 18-200 lens for RM3.5k.
I did not come home empty handed too, I bought a Chinese brand tripod, pretty solid, a clone to manfrotto. Tripod is a must need although we as a amateur don’t always use it.
Very random! Haha. Suddenly feel like want to buy new DSLR body. My current favourite body is the Canon EOS 7D which can shoot super nice HD video and pictures.

Lomography is Not Cheap, But I Like
Written by Nicholas Chan on November 28, 2009 – 2:18 am -I kept my two toy camera, a Holga and Diana F+ with Fisheye in the cupboard for a long time because I didn’t really have to time to take out to shoot but recently, I brought them out and shoot all the shots I’ve left in the film.
After getting the film to processed, and saw the outcome, my interest came back again. Have been surfing and checking out a lot of toy camera lately and my shopping and wish list increases.
OMG! I am so poor right now. Toy camera is cheap, the build quality is also cheap but I tell you what, it’s not a cheap hobby! Because you will have to spend for films, different type of films, send to shop to process, then scan into digital, it will be expensive.
Well, if you are into it, feeling arts, be sure you save a lot of money, earn a lot of money and never count how much you have spent, it will be a lot.
More shots are coming, don’t wanna post it all once. Not fun. Haha. By the way, the above shot is I did the scan from negative myself. Not bad right?

4 More Days Left Until SPM Ends
Written by Nicholas Chan on November 27, 2009 – 2:35 am -The SPM is very long, it started from 18th November and will be ending on 14th December which is almost a month, but then the exams are only 9 days and 5 days had past.
Not going to say so far so good now because the last paper I had on Wednesday, Additional Mathematics was pretty challenging, managed to finish all but then I knew I already got a few answers wrong. So hopefully, A it will be.

Tuesday was Moral paper, it was good because I’ve got all the moral values and definition in my head, it still running in there now, I just blah everything out on the paper. That’s the simple part of it, hard part was, a single word different from the definition will result a zero marks, hope I did no mistake.
I had plenty of time after that paper because it ended early in the morning.
Arron.
Wen Quan.
Charles.
Day 6, Additional Mathematics day was like an outing day for me. After paper 1, we had 4 hours in between until the next paper starts. Some went home, to sleep, to read, some stayed in school, some went I-got-no-idea-where and for me, I didn’t want to go home because I didn’t feel like reading, moreover modem spoilt and I couldn’t go online.
Chien Chern, Boon Hooi.
Found friends who were going out and joined them for brunch at Air Itam.
After that, went back to school, finding everyone didn’t want to go elsewhere and nobody wanted to go out with me, so I went to town alone, Prangin Mall, to buy a new modem and to develop my 120mm film. I just got plenty of time at that time, to town, buying, photo shop, and back to school, it just took me an hour.
When back to school, there’s like an hour more till next paper, real bored.
Forgot to mention, that whole day was black and white day, turned on black and white setting and mounted a 50mm lens. Weeeee, and thanks Jing Min for the last shot, skilled.

My 2 Favourite Short Films Made From Canon DSLR
Written by Nicholas Chan on November 16, 2009 – 9:25 pm -I have a new interest lately and that is making video. This interest came to me after I’ve made my very first short film, Don’t Eat My Pringles and have been Googling a lot for the techniques and stuff. I don’t really have a pro cam, but I do wish to own one and that’s why the Canon EOS 7D is in my wishlist now. Canon EOS 5D Mark2 is just way too expensive and it cost almost RM12k while the ONLY option is Canon EOS 7D at around RM6-7k.
That’s a good all in one deal with microphone input, photographic lens, 1080p video shooting. If you buy a HD camcorder roughly says RM3k and a static 35mm adapter to use the photographic lens on the camcorder, it will be total almost RM4-5k. I am sounding geeky here, to make it simple, video DSLR is more worthwhile.
And here I want to share 2 short films that I’ve found in YouTube which made from Canon DSLR.

Relax on Khai Island
Written by Nicholas Chan on September 27, 2009 – 1:31 am -The last stop of my Phi Phi Islands one day tour is “Relax on Khai Island”, that’s what the tour guide told us. We spent like an hour at this little island, called Khai Nok Island in the middle of nowhere. The island is quite small with a little green and big piece of ivory sandy beach. Relaxing chairs and umbrella shades were on the beach.
We got off the boat and there’s cut watermelon prepared and waited for us on the beach. It’s free for us, according to the tour guide but in fact, it’s what we paid for. Haha.
Ate a lot of watermelon, looked for a couple of chairs for dad and mom and to the water I was. The chair here cost us 150baht per chair, it’s the same price on Patong Beach.
Ice cream man will come and sell us ice cream like every 20 minutes. There’s a few of them at the beach and we did not buy any although it’s hot. We got ourselves some cool juice instead.
I went into the crystal clear turquoise water, put on my swimming paddle, trying to swim but it was difficult. The water is pretty but it’s a bad place for swimming or snorkelling. The water is too shallow for over 20 meter stretch out to the sea and after that, it’s too deep for diving too. It’s just not a good place for anything in the water. Only pro goes diving in the deep, I am not and it’s was meant to be snorkelling to me, but there’s nothing to see.
The bottom fills with lots of rocks and it cuts. I went out to the far end but not the deep place because there’s a coral barrier and I did not dare to go over it.
Spent like 20 minutes in the water and I went up to take a walk around the beach for some photo.
There’s nothing much on this small island, it’s really very small. There’s a little hut where drinks are sell and can hear some of the tourist singing karaoke at there. It’s just sunbathing, napping, reading, taking photos like me and waiting the time to pass and get back onto the boat.
It was low tide when we were going off, the boat have already moved out far and we have to walk across the water and my mom was screaming all the way because she don’t like to be wet. Haha, I was afraid too, of my camera, I can’t imagine that if it gets wet.
And, off we go from Khai Island.
Next stop: The end of trip

Random night with 50mm
Written by Nicholas Chan on August 21, 2009 – 12:30 am -I don’t really mount the Canon EF f/1.8 50mm II lens so often right now but I still like the lens a lot, it’s still the sharpest to me at the moment but it’s just the focal length that bothers me. Anyway, it still takes superb photo which I like! I wonder how well will it be on a full frame body. However, getting a full frame body will still be a long long way to me, I think I’ll stick with my 400D for another year or two. It’s still doing good with me and I take it anywhere I go.
Currently using a Tamron f/2.8 17-50mm as my multipurpose walkaround lens. Just 2 days ago, I removed the lens and mounted it with the 50mm and take it out with me to the tuition class. Snapped some shots of course. =)

Suzuki Swift’s dashboard.
Khalil Fang’s new album, Timeless on my iTouch. Have been listening the new album for a while. Like it.
