I kept my two toy camera, a Holga and Diana F+ with Fisheye in the cupboard for a long time because I didn’t really have to time to take out to shoot but recently, I brought them out and shoot all the shots I’ve left in the film.

After getting the film to processed, and saw the outcome, my interest came back again. Have been surfing and checking out a lot of toy camera lately and my shopping and wish list increases.

OMG! I am so poor right now. Toy camera is cheap, the build quality is also cheap but I tell you what, it’s not a cheap hobby! Because you will have to spend for films, different type of films, send to shop to process, then scan into digital, it will be expensive.

Well, if you are into it, feeling arts, be sure you save a lot of money, earn a lot of money and never count how much you have spent, it will be a lot.

More shots are coming, don’t wanna post it all once. Not fun. Haha. By the way, the above shot is I did the scan from negative myself. Not bad right?

My another Lomo camera, Holga 120N

Written by Nicholas Chan on February 1, 2009 – 3:23 pm -

Look! I got another Lomography toy camera here and that is the Holga 120N. I bought it nowhere here or there but on the Internet from RUGift.com for $29 (+$20 shipping fee). It took 3 weeks to arrive at my doorstep and it’s cheaper than my Diana F+. Now my Diana F+ works as a fish eye Lomo camera and this work for normal Lomo shots.

The packaging is not as pretty as the Diana F+ that I got from Guangzhou, it’s just a little box with a manual on a piece of paper, the camera itself and the film frame. That’s all, no merchandise or whatsoever like in the Diana F+. Happy lomo-ing. Processing the film is the bad part of playing lomography because the processing fee is high. Oh my god.

Just bought a box of 5 rolls of 120mm Kodak Film for my lomography medium format camera. It cost RM40 for a box and so it’s RM8 per roll. So expensive man, I won’t be taking a lot of photos with the little toy camera, lets say, 1 roll per month or 1 roll per fortnight? Hehe. Don’t get I still have to pay for processing and scanning fee. Expensive, OMG!

First Lomo 120mm roll featuring Chowrasta Market in Penang

Written by Nicholas Chan on January 14, 2009 – 12:24 am -

After few weeks of getting back from Guangzhou and owning a Diana F+ lomo camera, I had finally loaded my first roll into camera, took 12 shots which is the maximum number of photos, processed into negative and scanned into digital.

It’s not like holding a camera because it doesn’t feels like you have snapped a photo when you press on the shutter, only after you have processed the photos, you only can know the outcome.

I got a school teacher that her family opens a photo lab, so my processing is done by her. RM4 for processing of my film into negative film (film that can store for later use for printing or scanning) and RM10 for scanning into digital format. If I have a film scanner (flatbed scanner), I would have save the RM10 but a film scanner is very expensive.

I sent to my teacher yesterday and I’ve already got it today. It’s just a few shots but I am happy with it. I’ll share all here with you, all the 12 photos. Some turned out not so nice and some edited a little bit, hope you don’t mind.

I went to the Chowrasta Market on Sunday with my DSLR and Diana F+ lomo camera hanging around my neck. I believe this does attracted some attention there.

This was my first shot with the camera. Very scared that I did not shoot anything on my first pressing on the shutter.

I twist the film over a little bit so it appeared a little bit out of frame but it’s still nice. I did take photos with my DSLR too but I think I’ll post it up in other time. Now let’s talk about lomography first. The black area around the edges of the photo is called vignettes.

I don’t know is it the scanner or the camera, but still look good to me.

From then on, I switched to fisheye lens. I kept my original one in bag but somehow I can’t find it at home, I’ve forgotten where I misplaced it or I’ve drop it. So sad!

The printing man thought that there’s a problem with the ring but actually I used a fisheye lens, the viewing angle is almost 180 degree.

It was a nice sunny day with blue sky, so taking photos wouldn’t be a problem. I won’t take photos with it during cloudy day because I am not sure what the photos will going to be turned up, it’s the safest to take on a sunny day.

Mom and dad became my model too. Mom hate the fisheye because she said it made her looked like a alien.

My tuition teacher, Anthony helping out at his relative’s store. This photo was actually very dull and I’ve tweak the colour so that you can see something, or else it was very washed out.

The bra stall in the market has a very good business. Perhaps you can think of selling bra too at the market too. Haha.

Diana F+ Lomography camera and 20mm Fisheye lens

Written by Nicholas Chan on January 14, 2009 – 12:05 am -

Recently I am interested into something called the Lomography, it’s a kind of photography and I don’t really know how to explain about it. It’s an art. Basically, from what I’ve known, lomography is a kind of photography produced by toy film camera and resulting in unperfect photo element like over expose, light leaks and more. These photo deficiency will turn into a piece of beautiful artwork and I like the effect.

Guangzhou 2 (2008)

There’s no shop selling Lomo camera in Penang. During my trip to Guangzhou, I have found a Lomography specialty shop on No 87, 豪贤路 Hao Xian Lu. You can take the Guangzhou Metro to 农讲所 Nong Jiang Suo Station and go to the Exit C. I went there and I bought myself a lomography toy camera, the Diana F+ and a fisheye adapter for it. Why I say it’s a toy camera because it feels very toyish with its plastic built body.

It’s one of the cheapest lomography camera I bought it for like 300+ Yuan. The camera itself is cheap but it will be expensive when it comes to processing the photos.

I think the building cost is just a few tens bucks, it won’t be expensive because it’s plastic but the selling price is a little bit high. For the sake of hobby and interest, I have to fork out my money, eat less, save more to fulfill my daily necessity in order to improve on a better happy life. Hehe.

There’s the camera itself in the backage, a manual and a thick cover book about Diana F+ stories and photos taken with the camera but other lomographer.

The fisheye adapter is an extra accessory I bought for it as I love to take photo in a super wide angle at almost 180 degree. A real fisheye lens for my DSLR is over RM2000 and this is only a hundred bucks.

One sad thing is after changing to the fisheye lens, I think I’ve dropped my original Diana F+ lens, now my Diana F+ is a fisheye camera. So sad but I have another same thing coming to me soon, I’ve ordered a Holga 120N a few weeks ago online and it has yet to be arrived.

This is not for newbie, everything of this is operated in manual analogue mode, no battery required and it uses a 120mm format film which means hard to find in today’s market. According to my photography club teacher, 120mm film is mostly used by photography students nowaday. The normal film that you use is a 35mm one, if I want to use the 35mm on my Diana F+ or Holga, I need to buy an adapter for it so the film can fit in the camera.

It’s a little bit hard to operate the camera at first but after something, you will gain some experience and will know more about it.

Another thing is, there’s no such thing as Digital Lomography camera. =)

Little walkaround at Universiti Sains Malaysia

I was bored, I was the first to arrive in USM today for the Young Enterprise Annual Showcase. The campus is big, bigger than the university that my brother is studying in, National University of Singapore. Though, the building is not as pretty as the university in other country etc USA, Canada, Singapore, Australia, only except we got a lot of greens in the campus.

There’s a lot of parking space in the campus. In NUS, what I noticed was you have to pay for parking, minutes based and the parking space there were limited too, not same as our university here.

Shuttle bus commuting you to anywhere of the campus. Sorry I have to say that it’s a ugly bus, but it’s better than there is than there is not.

This is a lecture hall where the lecturers do their remote lecture from far away. Is this effective? I don’t know. We need holographic projector and n.1 surround sound system to make it as if that the lecturer is in the hall. Haha.

Lomography effect! with a little tweaking of the colour and contrast.
