Last post about Penang Chinese Ox New Year Celebration

Written by Nicholas Chan on March 21, 2009 – 1:44 am -

Sometimes, taking too much of photos is no good because I need to split up an event into several post. I am not a good editor by the way. Hehe. At first, there’s the Penang Chinese New Year Celebration in the afternoon before the sky turn dark, then I went to Khoo Kongsi, I went to Cheah Kongsi and now I go randomly, at night where the sky is dark.

There’s a big crowd gathered around the Penang CM’s car. I was curious and went to take a look and it’s the news reporter was doing an interview with the CM. People around were most probably his supporter and also wanted to go on TV, so do I but I didn’t manage to go to he back of Mr Chief Minister. Nevermind, at least I stand a chance to see the behind the scene of a news scene.

It’s really very hard to move around at night, people seems to come by more and more and it’s a massive human jam on the road.

There’s this puppet show with Teochew talkings near the Teochew temple there. It looks very cute but I was there for a while only, because I was trying to take photos of everything, wrapped up before I go home. It was late.

In the Teochew temple, people can dress themselves into the Chinese traditional wedding clothes and take a shot. I don’t know this two Mister and Misses by the way.

Since it’s cow year or they called it the Ox, there’s a cow outside, decorated with a sunflower at his horn. People went to touch it hoping to get some good luck from it, I wonder will it works? It’s just a normal cow I assumed.

At the other side, I found them, Ex Mr Chief Minister, Mr Koh Tsu Koon and his Gerakan team watching at some show. People still did say hi to them even after Penang has a new government. Great.

I went home with dad and mom at 9.30pm. It was really tiring after so many hours of walking and taking photos there. I’ll shoot less photo next year. =)

Ox Year Pai Ti Kong

Written by Nicholas Chan on February 4, 2009 – 11:06 pm -

This year’s Pai Ti Kong night falls on 2nd February Monday night. It was again a special school holiday on the next day because the school wanted us to rest at home after a long night of Pai Ti Kong. If you don’t know know what Pai Ti Kong is, it’s a festival that the Hokkien pray to the God of Sky and also known as the Hokkien New Year. A very happening night in Penang where you can hear a lot of firecrackers and see fireworks in the sky.

However, to me, the “ohm” of taking photograph was not there, most likely because of my half-broken lens and not fully equiped camera gear. I still like my last year’s photograph of the Chew Jetty Pai Ti Kong celebration. It also can be boring because I go to the Chew Jetty there every year, hopefully a special inspiration will come to me next year or perhaps go to somewhere else.

As usual, road block and cars parked far away from Pai Ti Kong place and one end of Weld Quay. We walked. I went there at around 11.30pm and there were already a lot of people when I was there.

=) I would love to get myself shown in a motion picture. I believe it’s work of some filmmaker but definitely not from the TV station. TV station’s crew wouldn’t be so kind to put up something like this to warn you.

There’s fireworks, lion dance, dragon dance and that’s all.

It always the same thing, the long ritual table with all the food for the God of Sky and candle lighting at the end. There’s a lot of photography enthusiast there to take photo too. A lot of which has a very good gear setup but I love mine. =)

I want to play firecrackers! But then nobody in my house buy it, so no firecrackers for me.

By the way, Mr Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was there too!

Forum on Wireless@Penang Project

While driving along the road, I saw banners hanging on the lamp post saying that there will be a forum held this weekend, Saturday, 8th November 2008 on the project Wireless@Penang.

Forum on Wireless@Penang Project

Date: 8th November 2008

Time: 2.00pm – 5.00pm

Venue: KOMTAR Dome

This is organized by the state government and MCDC to discuss on this project because there’s people concern about this project will affect the health of the locals.

Meanwhile, a new group calling itself the Penang Wireless Campaign Group, concerned about the possible health risks of state-wide wi-fi, has set up a blog. I’ll say this is a nonsense as I am opposing this group.

If it does really bring in a big health problem, London-ers, Paris-ian, New Yorkers, Japanese, Taiwanese, Singaporean are dead now now.

I will be attending this forum to see what they will be discussing. I am standing by on this project. Thumbs up for CM Lim Guan Eng.
