Christmas Eve Night at Gurney Drive
Written by Nicholas Chan on January 6, 2010 – 11:30 am -Don’t know why so many people like to gather on the street of Gurney Drive on Christmas Eve night. On 2009’s Christmas Eve, I was there a while before going to the cinema to catch the premiere of Jay Chou’s The Treasure Hunter which is not really a good to watch.
There’s fighting and spraying of police’s vehicles the year before and they ban the selling and using of artificial snow flakes spray. I did not see any people selling it but I still see people having it on hair, only started spraying it when the countdown hits 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 MERRY CHRISTMAS!
The news came back again, there’s some young gangster got up a fight with the police and RELA member. That’s really OMG, I missed the show because I was in cinema and I also don’t want to be involve. Not interested in sprays now.
Many friends tell me that this year’s Christmas Eve at Gurney Plaza and Gurney Drive was boring. Is it? I didn’t really know about it, I found my Christmas Eve quite interesting, even at Gurney Drive was fun because we were joking and talking all the way while waiting for the movie time.
Maybe they don’t get to spray people (a lot), so it’s boring. The stage at the alfresco area of Gurney Plaza was pretty rocking too, I saw many people were like partying at there.
Not bad what. Just I didn’t really like the Tresure Hunter, the movie was pretty lame and I don’t like the story. It’s just for Jay Chou and Lin Zhi Ling’s fans.

Glass stepping show at Gurney Plaza
Written by Nicholas Chan on October 23, 2009 – 1:03 am -Recently, while I was jogging on Gurney Drive, I saw there’s a couple doing street performing at there. It’s the second time that I saw them at Gurney Drive. The guy play on the violin and the girl dance. No idea whether they touring to Penang and do some random street performance here or what. The guy is from Taipei and the girl is from Russia.
One part of their street performance was the Russian girl got her feet on the broken glass. Sounds pain but she’s fine with it.
Although this is cool, but I realize that not many people get close to check it out. I wonder, is it really uninteresting? Or the locals are just too lazy to walk close to see what’s happening?

One FM and 8TV Chinese New Year Roadshow
Written by Nicholas Chan on January 12, 2009 – 10:03 pm -There was a little stage set up in front of the entrance of Gurney Plaza. When I arrived at the mall, there’s nothing, no people, it’s just a stage that errected there. I got nothing to do in the mall and just walked around and at one time, I walked out of the mall then I saw a lot of people gathering at the stage there. Only then I know it’s a Chinese New Year roadshow by 8TV and One FM.
8TV crew were promoting their very own Chinese New Year songs album for RM20 and I didn’t buy any. I just stand there and see the host playing games with the people.
One FM is the newest Chinese radio station in town and from the same company of Fly and Hot FM. It was a surprise to see DJ Jeff from 988 who is now a DJ at One FM, he is one of my favourite DJ. My favourite radio station is 988 because there’s more Cantonese content and now one my favourite DJ is in the new station, it’s a dilemma to choose which station to listen. Let’s wait for 19th January which the first show will start in One FM. At the moment is just playing music around.
What I did was just go around and take photos with the DJ. I think they are trying hard to go everywhere to promote the new radio station. I first knew about it on an article in the newspaper, then I’ve tried tuning into 87.8FM but it didn’t work, I think they are still setting up the station.
Anyway, it’s nice that’s there’s another choice of Chinese radio station in Malaysia.

Jin Jie emo at the Gurney Drive bird roundabout
Written by Nicholas Chan on January 11, 2009 – 12:12 am -There’s a roundabout at Gurney Drive and I call it the bird roundabout because it has a design of birds flying. Last time it was just a normal roundabout with nothing on top until then, they added something on top and it signifies bird flying high, so that’s the bird roundabout. Not the prettiest but at least there’s something good looking.
(Tee Jin, Jin Jie, Rong Zhi)
We actually went to a meeting before this, Royblin dropped us at Gurney Drive and I had to walk home from there and my friend, Tee Jin, Jin Jie and Rong Zhi wanted to go to eat, but before eating, we walked across the road to this bird roundabout for some photos. Haha, we were really sampat.
The stupid part was not the above “smile and snap”. It’s just a little friendly shot with friends and I was so orange. I was wearing the Penang Brige Marathon’s shirt.
Then 2 were trying to be emo, it’s a little omg and silly.
Taking a closer look, Jin Jie was touching on the pipe. =)
Looking at the original coloured photo, it looks funny. So I’ve decided to turned them into black and white to suit the mood. Wee, tried to be emo and failed.

Christmas Eve and “spraying fever” at Gurney Drive and Gurney Plaza
Written by Nicholas Chan on December 28, 2008 – 12:51 am -This year’s Christmas Eve’s has not been anything special, it’s still the same old “5,4,3,2,1, let’s spray!”. People has already created a mess last year by throwing empty party spray can at the police and so it had been banned but still there’s people selling it, there’s people buying it, there’s people spraying around. Not me this year though. I don’t want to waste my money on this, I rather save up for something big or go for a big meal.
I went to karaoke in the afternoon with some friends. Then I went to Prangin Mall to collect my new computer’s hardware, back home for a bath and went to had steamboat with friends again. The last place to go was Gurney Plaza and that’s what the countdown place for me was. I’m still underage for anything at Upper Penang Road where all the clubs, bistro, pubs are and so just went to look around at Gurney Plaza/Gurney Drive, meet up with some school mate, class mate, tuition mate, mate.
There’s a stage set up at the alfresco area of Gurney Plaza, there’s live band and games were played. It’s a better place then what’s outside the road where the people trying to spray each other. All cafes were full, I can’t find a nice place to sit down to drink something nice and talk, so I just went around and say hi to everyone I know, they were like everywhere and we always got lost. Calls could be hardly made because of the weak signal and poor service line.
Some people were in G Hotel because that place is more quiet than outside but afterall, security came and asked all who were not the hotel residence to go out. I was in for a few minutes, out and thinking of going back but here came the security at the main entrance.
I saw a gang of people of the same style, emo and punkish at there too. I think it’s a Christmas gathering for them. I still don’t know what should I call them. Any idea?
Back to Persiaran Gurney or Gurney Drive, the street in front of the mall was very crowded with teenagers, youngster and people. It’s either holding a camera or a can of party snow spray, preparing and get ready to spray on anyone that caught their eyes on.

The people on the street didn’t really countdown like 5,4,3,2,1. It was like “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh…” and I only knew it was Christmas already as I was busy taking photos on the street. Then the people play with the party spray as if it was something holy. I was a victim too. It was banned but don’t know where the police were at that time. I think the crowds weren’t afraid of the police but instead it is the police that were afraid of them, there were like hundreds and hundreds of people on the street.
=) It’s not snowing.
I went for a movie later in the midnight, the premiere of The Spirit. Personally, I’ll say I like it but a lot of my friend says it’s boring. From what I’ve known, there’s some kids were arrested at around 1am for jumping on top of peoples car. They stopped the car, sprayed like crazy, shouted, screamed and in the end on the top of the car. It happens every year by the way.

Good morning Gurney Drive
Written by Nicholas Chan on December 20, 2008 – 5:05 pm -It’s Gurney Drive again. I woke up before my alarm rings because of the bright sun shining through my windows. I did not put down the blinds yesterday and so it woke me up. It’s a nice early morning, seeing the sun was still low to the horizon, rising the the air, I quickly took my camera, went to the balcony to take some shots.
By the way, it’s not good to point the camera at the sun, it will ruin the sensor (if I’m not mistaken). Pretty isn’t it? Took it at around 7.50am.
