Hiking to Moon Gate with Friends
Written by Nicholas Chan on February 6, 2010 – 1:06 am -The initial plan was Chien Chern come to my house to fetch me go to Penang Hill Tram Station to fetch Arron, Chen Yuen, Yiphing and Sher Reen to Botanical Garden, then hike up to Penang Hill and eat some ice kacang, then take the tram down and sit Arron’s car back to Botanical Garden for Chien Chern’s car. But FAILED because the tram service was down for repair work. So sad man.
While at the tram station, while waiting for Arron them to come, Chien Chern and I got no place to go and simply drove around the area and found a temple. So we went in to take a look and I prayed.
The temple was pretty cool and it’s quiet in the morning. I saw monks at there.
In the end, all two car drove to Youth Park and hike up to Moon Gate and come back down. It’s still exercise afterall but we were quite late at that time, it’s almost mid-morning already.
Moon Gate is a stop at the hill for resting. The trail up to the place where I always go hiking with my mom. It’s pretty fun and sometime can see monkey at there.
I did check how long the trail was before, it’s about 2km and it’s not very tall, around 230m above sea level and took us like half and hour. Wonder how long will it takes for us to climb the Mount. Kinabalu tallest in South East Asia.

Sher Reen, Yiphing.
I have got no food up there and at that kind of time, there’s no water service too, so I drank tap water up there, hopefully it’s clean. =) Feeling a little bit of hungry, Arron gave me a bite of his prepared sandwich. Thank you.
Spent like 30 minutes up there, crapping and shouting after other people went down, so at a moment, it’s only us up there. Very not quiet but a bit creepy. But soon, there’s hiker came up again and we turned our voice down. If you go hiking during the evening, there’s nice kopi-o to drink, music and many people up there, quite happenings.

There’s my respectful Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s photo. Rocks.
We wanted to go Penang Hill still, but no luck connecting it to there. There’s still a route at the back of Moon Gate, but no sure where it leads to. A little bit scary. Haha.

Nice view from some part of the hill.
We then went down under the hot sun. Very surprise and now only I know there’s still people go hiking almost noon. It’s like people go there at anytime of the day, don’t know night got or not.

Walk For Sight Charity Walk at Padang Polo
Written by Nicholas Chan on July 4, 2009 – 12:39 am -Last Sunday, I attended a Lions Club organized event and it’s the Walk For Sight Charity Walk at Padang Polo. It’s said to be co-organized with the Leo Club but most part of it were by the Lions Clubs. Some Leos did went to help early in the morning.
It’s a Sight First project and it’s fun. Basically, one have pay RM15 which was to donated to the St Nicholas Visually Impact Home, then one will find a partner. Then one will be blindfolded and lead by another who is not and have walk on the road to feel how’s a visually impact feels like. According to some sources, there’s around 3000 people joined this event.
I was there to walk and also to help out to take some photos for the event. But I have dedicated most of my time and energy into the walk so I didn’t get a lot of photos there.
Very bad morning that I went to the toilet twice on that day for clearing the stomach. They got a fun morning aerobic session before the aprroximately 2.3km walk by the roadside.
KOKahKOK.
Andy, Tee Jin, Me, Min Xiang, Alvin.
It’s the flag off at I’ve forgotten what time. I was so excited with the walk and I’ve forgotten to look at the time.
Crystal and Jason a.k.a. Cryson and Jasstal.
Min Li and I don’t know who.
I was not blindfolded at first, was leading some friends and taking photographs along the way. Only when I find everyone were lost, I went to find a group and walk together.
Jin Jie and Rong Zhi.
Jin Jie and Me using the blindfold as a mask.
I found Jin Jie, Rong Zhi and Lester. There’s 4 person, lining up as a train, 3 blindfolded and one leading. I was on the last one, blindfolded all the time.
Lester on the left.
Most of the photos were taken by Jin Jie who was leading in front. I was blindfolded so I could not see anything, so I was enjoying being lead by people. I did capture video instead but haven’t take a look at it yet. Wonder what I did I shoot while I couldn’t see. It was really fun as we couldn’t see and were moving left and right to avoid rocks and bushes.
It’s like around 9.30, we reach Padang Polo again after walking from Jalan Sepoy Lines to Jalan Macalister to Jalan Residensi and back to Padang Polo.
Leo Club seniors.
Each of us gets a certificate of participation and some free snacks. There’s a lucky draw session too. Unfortunately I got nothing but I’m happy for my friends who got themselves prizes, there’s G Hotel free accomodation, pearl necklace from Vanessa’s Diamonds, an oven, SPA voucher and more for the lucky winner from my school.
Remember that we got Largest Leo Club Participation Award? We got like around 30 peoples from my club that day. Anyway, I had fun on that morning. Good to join in charity activity.

Morning Walk to Patong Beach
Written by Nicholas Chan on June 14, 2009 – 1:10 am -Dad and mom are not really a beach person and they prefer to walk at the stalls selling stuff then to the beach. On the 2nd day of my Phuket trip few months back, I woke up early and went down for a morning walk. If I were to sleep in the hotel, it would have wasted my time, so it’s better to do something useful.
Washed up myself, took my camera, wore a shorts and slippers and out I went. It’s so quiet on the road and most of the stalls were not open at that time. There’s just a little vehicle moving on the road and it’s like only me.
Everything seems so calm and quiet at that time. It’s so unlike the night before where everyone were drinking and shouting at the pubs. The sun was not that hot in the morning, it’s nice walking on the road.
Passed Bangla Road and out to Patong Beach. Some pubs were refilling their beer and alcohol supply in the morning. There’s like so many many beer and demand for it is definitely very high.
While walking passed some pubs, I found some interesting photos pasting on the walls. They are photos of tourists who came to their pubs. It’s pretty cool, don’t you think so. It’s like happy faces everywhere.
Walked across a road and I got to the beach. It’s still quiet.
There’s only a little people walking on the beach and swimming in the sea. The Thais were setting up the umbrella and chairs on the beach. The chairs are to rent for people and it’s 15baht per chair for unlimited time. If you walk away and come back, you have to pay again. It’s so nice to have so many chairs and the beach is pretty clean. It’s so unlike what it is in Batu Feringghi. True. I wonder why Batu Feringghi can’t be like this?
I had my breakfast then at Burger King. =) Yummy!

Chung Ling Annual Hiking Event
Written by Nicholas Chan on April 21, 2009 – 11:58 pm -Still remember I took part in my school’s annual cross country run two months ago? Here we got another outdoor annual thingy and is the annual hiking competition. It’s held annually but this was my first year joining them. Students who get to take part in this event have to be in top 200 during the cross country run, I was not in top 200 nor near any number to it but I still came to this hiking competition.
It’s because this is the last year of me being in high school and I don’t want miss any major event organized by the school. I was there just joining the fun but not in the competition so I could take my time hiking to the top of Penang Hill instead of thinking of competitions.
Hiking is fun but it had been a long time since I last went to hiking. I had been to Penang Hill for like 3-4 times.
Mom dropped me off at Botanical Garden last Saturday as early as 7.30am. I am always be the one who is late, but it doesn’t matter although everyone was there already because it haven’t started when I was there.
With 3 categories (Form 1 and 2, Form 3 and 4, Form 5 and 6) of 200 participants each, there’s approximately 600 plus people going up hill.
The hiking race flagged off at 8am sharp in the morning and Arron, Chien Chern and Me were not in the line because we not in the 200s.
Besides going hiking as an exercise, I was an unofficial photographer for the event too. Although I am in the school’s Photography Club, but I was not working for them that time.
We joined some friends at the back of the line because some of which who didn’t want to join in the competition too. It’s just chit chating and joking while hiking. There’s blue, green, red, yellow, and purple house in my school sport houses and Arron’s gave an idea of wearing the orange Penang Bridge Run T-shirt and we did. Eventually, we had became the only unofficially Orange House team.
This hiking competition was not on a hiking trail but is a tar road connected to the top of Penang Hill. Alternatively, people can choose the hiking trail which located in Botanical Garden.
We stopped at 84 a while. 84 is actually a rest house which located in the middle of the hill, when you reach this place means that you hare at half the height of Penang Hill. Some hikers tend to stop here and then go back down and some choose to go to the top and either take the tram down or go back down again.
We were slow one at the back so it took us 1 hour to reach 84, so it’s another 1 hour for us to reach the top.
On the other hand, 84 is the 15th station of my school rescue standby team which consist of a St John Ambulance, a Scout, a Boys Brigade and a Youth Cadet member. They have 30 stations all together which provided help to the student hikers who needed any aid.
We took photo with them, and guess what, I met the son of former Members of Parliament, Dato Dr Teng Hock Nan’s son, Walter Teng who is a Form 3 Youth Cadet member working out at there.
We arrived at the top of the hill at around 10am. It took us around 2 hours for this hiking trip and we did stop a lot of times. From what I have known, the first place got to top at only a duration of 1 hours and 20 minutes like that. That’s very fast compare to us. I admit that I don’t have that energy and stamina for it, so I was slow. Anyway, that was fun.
I then had my breakfast with friends up there. The food was not bad but looking for a place to sit was bad because imagine 600 students at the top of the hill. This caused a big jam at the tram station going down hill too. So we ate slowly and waited the tram congestion to ease.
We just roamed around the hill until less people at the tram station.
Frankly, I got to say that the tram at Penang Hill is very slow and the capacity is small compare to the tram in Hong Kong. It took us like around 20 minutes waiting at the station and 15 minutes going down hill.
We went down and many went up. The tram station is always that crowded during the weekend except last Saturday which was over crowded.

My Last Chung Ling Cross Country Run
Written by Nicholas Chan on March 9, 2009 – 11:40 pm -Before the run, I have been thinking, this is my last year being in this school’s annual cross country run event, should I do a serious run this time? or should I do a serious walk with camera on the hand, taking good shots? In the end, I picked the second choice.
Form 1 and form 2 were the years that I was serious in this run, and from then on, I prefer staying at the back of the line, walking instead of running with friends and take some shots once in a while. Form 3 and 4 didn’t really take good shots at this run, so I tried harder this year, but turned out, not very good shots too, but I got many shots this year.
It’s on a Friday so which means it’s counted as a normal school day attendance. I woke up a little bit later than my usual school day because the venue of the cross country run, Youth Park is just a 5 minutes drive from my house. It’s a big jam around that area because imagine 2000 students in the park and there would be like hundreds and hundreds of cars, moreover, there’s a high school and a primary school nearby too. Mom dropped me off somewhere outside the park and I walked in.
Many of the students were already there early and I was not late because the race hadn’t flagged off when I was there. Everyone needed to take 2 times attendance from the teacher only consider a full 30 marks for Physical Education and also attendance for school, one before run, one after run.
The run was divided into 3 categories, Form 1 and 2, Form 3 and 4 and Form 5 and 6. I am in the last category this year.
It’s a gang of friends at the back of the lines who were also not serious runner. For your little information, the first 200 arrivals at the finishing line gets to go to the hiking competition which will be happening the week after the school holiday. I am not in the number, if I am free on that day, I’ll go join the fun.
Min Sheng and me
Jin Jie and me.
Chien Chern, Arron at the back with Danile on the right.
Mr Wong Chong Yin did a peace pose for my camera.
Jin Jie and Arron.
Min Xiang with his D60.
Me and Mr Mohd Hafiz.
Chien Chern and I don’t know this teacher’s name. =)
The running route is from Youth park out to Jalan Kebun Bunga then to Botanical Garden, do a big round U turn out of Botanical Garden, run along Jalan Kebun Bunga then to Jalan Utama until a junction, turned into Jesselton residential area, from there a big round out and back to Youth Park again. The whole route is around 6km.
Took us around 1 hour and 20 minutes to arrive back to the starting point. It seems like we were faster than last year a little bit.
After marking the last attendance from the teacher, I stayed for a while at there before going back. It’s just medal giving ceremony that happened on the stage which I did not wait for it to go on. There’s lucky draw for last year but nothing this year. So we went back early for breakfast.
The school’s scout gang.
Me, Khai Liang, Alvin, Min Xiang, Jing Min, Simon, Arron and Tee Jin.
Joel with a big smile.
We went on a foot walk to the coffee shop for breakfast after the run. I then saw a lot of people went to Gurney Plaza but I didn’t, I went for a movie at Prangin Mall instead. I wanted to go for a sing but I found no one to go with and in the end, I went to the cinema.
This was the last time participating in this school’s annual event, I am so gonna miss it. Graduating high school in 8 months time, oh my god, the clock is ticking.
