My 2010 New Year Eve in Penang
Written by Nicholas Chan on February 3, 2010 – 8:22 pm -Some friend must be thinking, “isn’t my new year’s eves are always in Penang (my hometown)?” Pretty wrong, last year I spent my New Year’s Eve at a cold and people-not-enjoying-new-years-eve place and that’s Guangzhou.
People at there don’t really interest in New Year or New Year eve, Chinese there are more to Chinese New Year, but so New Year Day is still a national public holiday. Still remember that I spent my day touring Guangzhou and at night counting down in the hotel room, watching Hong Kong’s great fireworks from the idiot box. It’s still fun though, because I was traveling. =D
Same thing as Christmas Eve’s morning, I woke up then went for dim sum at the same dim sum house. I don’t know whose idea it was, it’s just “IT’S DIM SUM AGAIN!”.
They as in Yiphing, Chai Wei, Chien Chern and Chen Yuen went back to their places and would be meet in the afternoon. As for me, I went for college hunting to ask info about studies. Went to The One, Disted and Equator and still I’ve got no decision in my mind. I am going to wait for my result in March already. I think I’ll go to a college whichever needed to pay the less.
Then went to meet Anthony, my tuition teacher at his new place, big renovation was going on because he wanted to remove all the wall in his new house. Seems interesting and just stayed there for a while and listen to his ideas on the interior design.
After college hunting, I actually got no place to go. I was supposed to go meet my friends at her house and I was in the middle of her house and my house, thinking should I go home for a rest or not. After thinking for a little bit, decided to spend the whole day out and only go back home at midnight. Save petrol by not going back and out. Hehe.
Very lame, we were suppose to think what to do and where to go at Yiphing’s house but in the end, we spent the whole afternoon at her house, crapping mostly and eat instant noodle. Thank you Yiphing for the instant noodle. At one time, I don’t know what we were screaming and shouting until the neighbour came complain, it means seriously that the place need better noise insulation. =D
6pm came and in one car, I was the driver, we went to Queensbay Mall to check out the countdown concert. Unfortunately, there’s no Yiphing here, it’s only me, Chien Chern, Chen Yuen and Chai Wei. Mom keep telling me that it would be very jam around the area but what I saw was smooth traffic, just like the Chinese always says One Road Smooth Wind, which means move smoothly all the way.
The concert was starting at 8 and it was like 6.30pm when we arrived. It seems like there’s no crazy fans waiting at the front line, since there’s nothing to see yet, we went into Queensbay Mall and roam around, without sense of direction and shops to go or things to buy.
My favourite thing to do is standing in front of any of the Mac, iMac biggest screen 27″ preferably, turn on Photo Booth program and make fun, then bluetooth all the photo for self-storage. =D Very lame right? It’s a form of my entertainment when I found Apple’s computer at the store. We spent like half an hour at there and took quite many photos. Hopefully no one were laughing at us and the Apple people didn’t even want to bother us.
Accidentally bumped up with Mxdoing Min Xiang and his friend Sammy, they were going for a movie instead.
Very sad that after playing so long at the Photo Booth and walking the whole mall, the concert still not yet started. The MC were just interacting with the people. I don’t have the Rock’s Zone ticket, so I didn’t bother to go in early.
Very lame, we went into the mall again. I went to get my camera batteries because I was scared that my camera will run die if I keep on shooting useless stuff.
It’s dinner time after that. Almost all restaurant in Queensbay Mall are not very low priced, so we went out of Queensbay Mall and found Mommy Wang at the opposite. Not very low priced too, but do serves not-bad Taiwanese food.
After dinner for sure would be the concert time! Since we have got no ticket, we stand pretty far from the stage and only can see from the screen. I didn’t have a zoom lens, so not thinking of photo shooting that time. Just enjoying the crowds and music.
It’s a Chinese concert, organized by local Chinese commercial radio 988, there’s 2 Taiwanese singer (Tank and Power Station) and many local artists and what I was waiting for was the Taiwanese singer only. =D They came out at the very end of the concert for countdown of new year.
Met Alvin there.
Then P1 Wimax were giving out a lot of air banger but it’s lousy, it goes airless after a few bangs.
Cheong Kin were there too!
After Tank came out on stage and sang many many song, I really meant many, maybe he is popular so the whole half and hour was given to him, then we went somewhere near backstage to wait for the fireworks. Power Station took the stage on after that, and they were counting down for it. Found no where to sit, it’s everyone, and since the road was block, we sat on the floor. ^^
5-4-3-2-1. Yoyoyo, happy new year!
Didn’t have a tripod with me so I can’t shoot nice fireworks photo. I took them handheld at a slow speed. The fireworks was not very awesome, it’s like 10 minutes long only.
Amanda the blogger was there too!
And met Lester, Emily and Jameson.
The night had not end yet, the most shitty thing was queuing up to pay parking ticket, the line was half and hour long and after paying, the whole carpark was a massive jam, takes another half and hour to get out. Scary. I was thinking that won’t I have to repay my parking ticket because I exceeded the time limit after paying the parking ticket and not out of the mall, but it’s not a problem already because there’s guard collecting ticket and need not insert into the barrier machine again.
It’s only jam at Queensbay Mall carpark, the road outside was smooth. The night then ended with a supper at Upper Penang Road. Then it’s home everyone. Happy Chinese New Year for now! Haha.

Christmas Charity Concert at Auto City
Written by Nicholas Chan on January 2, 2010 – 1:33 am -2 days before Christmas, I went to Auto City at night to support the Leo Club of Penang Chinese Girls High School on their Christmas Charity Concert. It’s my first time driving to the mainland across the Penang bridge then on highway for 5 minutes to reach Auto City, it’s fun. For all the while, I only drive in the island. From the island to Auto City is very near only actually, it’s approximately 30-35 minutes drive from my place at Gurney Drive.
Jocelyn and Wallace.
This concert is a charity one, admission was free and they were raising fund for an orphanage home in Butterworth. The kids were there to see the concert too. The fund was raised by donation and the selling of some items like keychains, christmas hat, t-shirts and other little stuff. Since I am Leo Club member, I did help out a bit on the sales too.
There’s Santa Claus appearance and some performance like young rock band Past Time and Tragedies who are like only 15 years old, then a very LOL magic show and dance performance. Eunice who dance brought her whole dance team there to do a few dances.
Wan Pei and Corrinne.
Gini.
There’s a lot of Christmas songs that night, I didn’t know what was I doing around, I keep walking around and not sit down to watch the show. Most of the songs were leaded by their in-house young singer, Gini, who was the champion of Penang’s Leo Idol competition.
There’s chair in front of the stage and good to see most of the chairs were filled up. The fun thing about the chair is that it’s not normal chair, it’s beach chair, chairs that normally use on the beach which is nice for lying down. It’s so relaxing for the people down there who got a seat.
In between the concert, I went to roam around the place and did lame stuff like sitting in the kid aeroplane thing. With a 50 cents coin, the thing moved for like 1 minutes with music. =D I wonder does anyone get on it or not, or only us?
Lions (Lions Club) went crazy.
Cool Fujifilm Instax in action.
Look what I’ve found! Writings and drawings!
Organized by Wan Pei, the thing was pretty good with people coming by and venue sponsored by Auto City.
Me with Min Xiang, Kok Sheng and Tee Jin.
Pei Cing, Corrinne and me.
I Love Yng Shn Dot Blogspot Dot Com.
Victor, my senior.
Very cool Lion Ong Lai.
Union girls, TKF, Caster and Boon Yan.
Eunice, Wan Pei, Pei Cing and Cai Qian on the side.
Happy New Year! =)

Penang Wind Orchestra Pre-Jeju Tour Concert
Written by Nicholas Chan on August 10, 2009 – 11:40 pm -The name for this concert is long. Penang Wind Orchestra 9th Anniversary, Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival Pre-tour Concert. =)
Last Friday, I went to this concert at the Dewan Sri Pinang on invitation by two of the member in this Penang Wind Orhestra team, Juan Shong (flute) and Wei Keong (saxaphone), who are also my current classmate. He gave me two tickets but then I found nobody who is interested in this sort of concert to give to, so I actually got an extra ticket for it.
Luckily, it’s not only me was there, a few of my classmate went there too, as a support for two of them. From my friend, the reason of having this concert was to raise more money for the orchestra team for going to perform at overseas, another reason was making it like a rehearsal for them before performing in this Jeju Internation Wind Ensemble Festival in Korea, the two of them will be departing tomorrow to Korea. That’s so fun of them.
Back to Dewan Sri Pinang where the concert was. My friend picked the seats at the middle, not so in front and not so at the back. However, there’s some big sized guy in front of me block my view. I didn’t want to bother about, as long as I can listen to the music from my place.
Wei Keong on the left.
Juan Shong on the right.
It’s a two hour long concert, I don’t really know much about what they were playing. The few pieces that I knew were Sound Of Music, Phantom Of The Opera and Star Wars. It’s always the same thing most of the time. The last time I went to these concert was 5 years ago and I heard this musical pieces before.
There’s something cool which was the drum solo by one ex Chung Ling student, I don’t really know his name, I only knew that the drum solo was really good. There’s a lady soprano came out to sing along with the band, good voice, but not I am not into soprano.
This Juan Shong’s little brother who sat in front of us and was very noisy and kinda annoyed us. My god, but he fell asleep in the end when we didn’t bother him.
It went interesting at first but as time goes on, it felt boring a little bit and maybe because it’s late, we were yawning all along during the last half an hour. Hehe.
When it almost came to an end, the standard thing that is in every band concert came on and that’s the giving of flowers as appreciate and salutation and shouting of “Encore”. Eventually, the conductor will came back on stage and make them play another music again. It’s standard procedure. Haha.
We then went to the backstage to look for Juan Shong and Wei Keong, took photo and I went home. Yay.

Astro Golden Melodies Singing Competition Concert at Penang Times Square
Written by Nicholas Chan on May 24, 2009 – 6:30 pm -It was last last last Friday. It’s not a coincidence that we bumped up with this Astro Golden Melodies Singing Competition Concert at Penang Times Square but it was mom who wanted to go and take a look.
So, we went there for dinner at Roti Bakar Kopitiam and later we joined them standing among the small crowds who were there to see the concert. It’s little concert organized by Astro inconjunction with their Chinese Golden Melodies Singing Competition which has just ended last Saturday at Genting Highland.
I didn’t watch the show but my parents did.
There like hundreds of people or perhaps a thousand. That’s the crowds at the little concert, held at the open side area of Penang Times Square.
The whole thing started at 8.30pm till 11pm. We were having dinner at Roti Bakar which can overlook the stage. However, the hearing from there was poor so after billing, we went close to the stage.
It bored me some times because I am not interested in this. I was just standing there, seeing and looking around and everywhere.

Then I met the Malaysia’s fast food chain, Marrybrown’s mascot moving around. We took a photo together.

I walked around again. Then took a few photos of me, brother and his girlfriend.
Here’s me and my brother, Yikhung.
One thing I want to say about Penang Times Square is the multistory carpark is weird, then turning that goes up to the carpark is squared instead like like a spiral. Which makes driving up to the carparks feels uncomfortable.

Rynn Lin Yu Zhong in Gurney Plaza
Written by Nicholas Chan on November 30, 2008 – 1:01 am -Our Malaysia Chinese local artist, Rynn Lin Yu Zhong just came to Gurney Plaza on last Thursday to do a little bit of promo tour for his new album and autograph session for the fans too. Still I used to be one of the crowds in these events, buy the album (for fun) and go get an autograph. But, I rather save up my money now and try to get closer to the star to take a few nice shot of them and share with you guys.
Hello Rynn Lin, the whole mini little concert and meet the star started at 8pm. I went there like 20 minutes earlier to find a good spot for myself so that I can cover the stage with my camera. That’s what I got, I thought that Rynn will walked into the backstage from the left where the new wing is connected because I assumed he stayed in G Hotel, and indeed it was.
There’s around 300 hundreds fans down there and peoples on each floor looking down too. I’ve decided to move down to get closer to Rynn for a better shot of him. It’s a sea of camera phone and digital camera, mostly on video record on his singing. Though, I still went on with still photo because I only have a pair of hand to operate a camera.
Say hi to Rynn. That’s the closest I went to. It’s just right in front of the stage. I can’t be shouting and screaming with the fans because I was just the camera boy, taking photos of him and everyone. Rynn was on stage for 3 songs and a game session.
It’s always the same thing, throwing poster to the crowds and games with the fans.
4 people from the crowds were picked for the game session with Rynn. The game was pretty simple, each of them just need to sing a part of any of the new song in his new album and they could walk away with something.
The only girl that was picked got the loudest cheers of all and she walked away with a special sunglasses which was first worn by Rynn and then to her. That’s a very crazy fan of him. She screamed and she hugged Rynn.
Forgot to mention about the host of the night, Wen Kang from Astro did most of the talking. His hair is cute.
Lastly, the night went off with an autograph session for the fans. He only signed on lyric book and not on poster and no photograph was allow to ensure that everything went on smoothly. Took a few photos back there and I went back home.
Support original, listen original, buy original.
