Arabic and hindu wording on Lebuh Acheh road name
Written by Nicholas Chan on December 12, 2008 – 12:12 am -Penang is actually planning on having Chinese road names besides the original normal usual road names in Malay language, then there’s some protest and asking where there’s not Arabic or Hindu road names. I’ll say it’s the best to have it all, English, Malay, Chinese and also Hindu. It’s Malaysia, a multi racial country, it’s nothing bad having various language for the road names.
There’s some stories before. Before the DAP taking over the Penang State Government, the DAP set up Chinese road names at roads that used to have Chinese road names long time ago. These were taken down by the previous state government a day later.
When DAP took over the state’s governnment after the 8 of March election, a few months later, the state opposition, the Gerakan which is also the previous state’s government set up the Chinese road name sthemselves. *Sweatness* It is to remind the current government to set up the Chinese road names as mentioned before.
The state government warned them to take it down again. It’s down and after some talking, discussion, the different language road names will be up soon (to my knowledge)
On a little trip to downtown George Town, I saw two different languages road name on Lebuh Acheh (Acheh Street). There’s arabic at first.
When I go further down the street, there’s Hindu. That’s pretty cool but the best is all in one sign.
There’s also Chinese road name on Carnavon Street, that’s what I’ve read from the paper but I haven’t have a chance to take a peep a it yet. Good luck, Penang.
