Chinese New Year Open House (Main Street)

Written by Nicholas Chan on February 22, 2008 – 12:18 am -

I will be spliting this event into a few post as I got too many photos to post. So please check back when you are free. =) Subscribe to my RSS feed for instant update.

Last weekend, Saturday, I went to the Chinese New Year Open House in downtown Penang. Near to all the Chinese kongsi kongsi, clan house there. It started from 4pm till late night. I read about this event in the paper so I decided to go there with some friends to take photographs. Lower Pitt Street, Armenian Street and few street around that area were close for people to walk.

The Open House Event showcased all the Chinese tradition festival etc. Chinese New Year, Hungry Ghost Festival, Winter Solstice Festival, Chinese Valentine’s Day and more more more.

It’s something like a fun fair. With foods, games, shows and performance. All were related to Chinese.

I noticed most of the people there has a camera in hand. Big one, small one. Almost everyone. I went there is the same purpose as other people, take photographs! Hehe. Saw a bunch of people gathering around a bunch of girls, so I might as well join the fun. Jump in and start shooting.

Funny was the Dragon Boat festival featured Penang’s dragon boat teams rowing the boat on land on the dragon boats that mount on tracks. My school’s dragon boat teams were there too. Competing which team can reach the finish line faster with a stick pushing the ground.

Entertainment and things to do there were, take photograph, play traditional games, eat, watch performance and show. My favourite part is take photograph, eat and play games. =D

There’s food selling there too. So you got no worry that you find nothing to eat when your stomach starts shouting at you.

I stayed there till night. Too many things to explore and I eventually didn’t explore every corner when I went home.

Though, I didn’t had my dinner there. It’s really really too crowded till need to queue for long to buy food. Just ate some snacks there. We walked to Prangin Mall for dinner after all.

Paper said this event wanted to attract 100,000 visitors, but overall, approximately 60,000 peoples were there according to the paper. Pretty cool huh?

Took a lot of photograph that day. Almost used up the whole card, 500+ photos and so stay tune for more. Posting next will be the inside story of Cheah Kongsi and Khoo Kongsi.

Chinese New Year Visits to Relau Charis Home

Written by Nicholas Chan on February 19, 2008 – 11:25 pm -

Now is still in the Chinese New Year period. Chinese New Year celebration is long, 15 days of celebration, but many people’s Chinese New Year mood has been dropped till 0 percent because everyone has went back to work and school.

My Leo Club do make a visit to old folks home or orphanage every year during the Chinese New Year. I went with them last weekend.

It’s pretty far from my house or school. Relau is like on the far end of the island. We chartered a bus to take us there.

Took about 20 minutes to arrive there. I had never been there before, only been to 1 old folks home that is the Little Sisters of Poor which is located behind my school. This is the 2nd one went to.

That’s small? No way. According to the man of this home, the in front house is for those old peoples that are sick. Easier for caring and “emergency”.

The healthy one stay in the container like room. From what I know, 3 people share a room. Pity them only.

Since it’s Chinese New Year, we were giving donation to the home. I did not pack any ang bao, I’m bad, no. My club teacher advisor did pack a lot for us to give to the oldies. Walking there just to look around is not fun, so I might as well join the ang bao distributing team. Hehe.

Uncle was happy when seeing me holding the red envelope in hand. People that no one cares about is real happy when seeing people visits them.

Jin Jie gave one to auntie straight away when auntie come out from bath. Haha.

We helped out the aunties and uncles to do some work for a while. Then we chat around with them. They were talking history.

Chating

I realised that most of them is not their children don’t want them, most of them are not married and don’t have child. That’s sad. After listening to some stories, they said living there is like in jail. Can’t go out, the inmate do argue and fight each other some times. No entertainment, sit there, work or see sky whole day. Pity pity.

Group Photo

3 hours at the old folks home and we went home. Of course, we took a group photo before going back as an evidence we went there. LOL. Thanks Allan for holding the camera.

Outing after Meeting at New World Park

Written by Nicholas Chan on February 19, 2008 – 12:35 pm -

Talking about last Friday, I got a special school off on that day. It’s only apply to a few Chinese school in Penang. It’s mainly because that the night before was the Jade’s Emperor God’s Birthday and people went to Pai Ti Kong 拜天公 until pretty late at night. Majority of people do Pai Ti Kong, but no me, so since it’s majority, for sure it will be hard to wake up the next day so school might as well get a day off.

=)

A pretty busy day ahead for me. Got up early and ready to go for a project meeting at New World Park. I suggest not to have a meeting in school because school is far, school is bored, school is hot and school got no chicks to see.

Went there early. We got 2 option, Starbucks Coffee or Old Town Kopitiam. We went for Old Town Kopitiam for cheaper food and beverage. Hehe. I got my laptop, it was really heavy carrying around it and a camera. Did not record any meeting detail but somehow surfed the net with Starbucks free wifi. Haha.

Not really a formal meeting for us. We were on our casual wear (but during formal meeting, we are also on our casual wear XD). Ordered some food, eat and discuss at the same time.

Some of the Leo members. Wee~

This is the iTouch gang. It’s all started with me. Muahaha, put in some poison, and really got 2 friend has been poisoned by me to get 1. Another 1 is a iPhone user, a cooler one.

I <3 Starbucks (free wifi). Haha, love the Blended Frapacinno but it’s pretty expensive. RM13 for a cup.

Took a bus to Gurney Plaza later with some Form 3 boys. Others insisted to call a cab. Bus is cheaper though, RM1, and as for the cab, RM3 per person. Watched Jumper in the afternoon and I kinda love the movie. Jumping all around the world, can see many cities in the movie.

I did play a game of pool there. I’m still noob. Just joining the fun with friends. I stayed until pretty late at 9pm only went home on foot.

That night was the night where the Apple’s thinnest laptop in the world - MacBook Air arrived in store. Me, Merritt and Khai Liang stayed after dinner, wanted to have a feel on it.

So Thin MacBook Air

Oh phuck! I looked phat (It’s my shirt!!!)! Censored censored. LOL.

以往年不同的 Valentine’s Day

Written by Nicholas Chan on February 19, 2008 – 11:13 am -

This year’s Valentine’s Day was special to me though I didn’t celebrate it really. Nobody to celebrate with, as I mentioned in my previous Chocolate post, I got no girlfriend, relationship is not a big thing for me now. 顺其自然。

I was pretty nervous that day, last Thursday since I seldom mix with girls, and somewhat wants me to give them a gift on that special day. I purposely move around my tuition class so I get to meet a few girl’s friend on Thursday Physic and Chemistry lesson.

I kept my chocolate candies in my camera bag with few packs of silica gel which absorb the water vapour in the air. The night before, place the bag in my air-conditioned room, keep it cool so that it doesn’t melt and keep harden. Next day, it’s still look good. Then I placed the whole bag into the lowest part of my cupboard where the air is cool.

When I got back from school, the chocolate still looks good! Hell yeah.

Here’s the big part where I distribute the chocolate candies like a Santa, I went to her and “Hey, I got something for you.” Nobody knows how fast my heart was beating that time, but pretending calm, I managed to reach my hand into the bag and took out 2 chocs for her.

Still got many in the bag. I feels weird and paiseh or not cool or will-be-teased when I’m only giving to 1 person, there’s her friend, standing beside, so might as well give them too. Valentine’s day maa. Walked to the other friend, gave another her, and wanted to gave her friend too, but they insisted not to want it. Too bad.

In short, I had a different Valentine’s Day.

虽然我没和谁庆祝,但我过了一个以往年不同的情人节。Yay.

Bought a new cap at Prangin Mall

Written by Nicholas Chan on February 18, 2008 – 12:05 am -

I went Gurney Plaza this afternoon but bought nothing there. It was bored, I got nothing to buy there, doesn’t have much choice of street style fashion thingy there.

I’m liking Prangin Mall now. After a swim at the sports club, I and brother went to Prangin Mall in the evening. He wanted to look for cute gifts for his girlfriend and I wanted to buy a new cap. Looking for Subcrew cap, a street fashion brand from Hong Kong, they got some friends told me that there’s a shop selling imported Hong Kong stuff (I.S.O.S.), went in and see. It’s not cool, all ladies stuff.

Walk around and there’s many shop selling street fashion apparels, I didn’t bring my wallet out, I thought I was going to a swim only but somehow, we went to the mall.

Fakes is everywhere in Prangin Mall. Zoo York, Stussy, Neighbourhood, Clot, Bathing Ape, all are fakes. But who cares when the price is cheap.

Cap

I found myself a Bathing Ape cap for only RM25.90. Pretty cheap and nice right? Liking to wear a cap nowaday, when I lazy to do my hair, I just put a cap on it.

Caps

And now, I got a new cap into my net-typed cap collection. Haha. So little.

Pai Ti Kong is a happening night during Chinese New Year

Written by Nicholas Chan on February 17, 2008 – 6:27 pm -

Every year, during the 15 days Chinese New Year period, on the 8th night, Hokkien people will pray to the Sky God or known as Ti Kong 天公。Well in Penang, Hokkien people staying in downtown, Weld Quay area will gather around and run this ceremony together.

Hokkien people who stay at landed properties will most probably pray in front of their house and while for those staying at the flats and apartment will pray together.

I am not a Hokkien, I am a Cantonese. So it’s not really a big thing for me, though I like this night, where many fireworks and firecrackers can be heard and see. Very happenings, 热闹. I went to Weld Quay there to join the fun and took many shots. You can see more of my photos that I took that night in my flickr photo album.
